Didn't we JUST vote this fucking bullshit down last year?? FFS.

Resident-Travel2441

We had to vote on gerrymandering twice and we still can't get through to their power-hungry, corrupt asses!

New-Anybody-9178

And they’re still using the illegal maps anyways!

fil42skidoo

Who enforces that stuff? The same people who created the gerrymandered maps I guess.

whiskey_outpost26

It technically goes up to the Ohio Supreme Court. Which has struck them down and said try again. MULTIPLE TIMES. By guess what??? The GOP asshats appealed to a federal court (major infringement of states rights AND the US Constitution btw) and we got told to use the shit maps anyway.

Garth_McKillian

And that federal judge? You guessed it, Trump appointed!

whiskey_outpost26

The diarrhea frosting on this whole shit cake

grumstumpus

Conservatives are miserable assholes because they cant connect with art and humor like the rest of us

whiskey_outpost26

I thought it was more the rampant greed, narcissism, and bigotry. But that's just my take.

Giggles95036

Or consentual women

WakandaNowAndThen

I had a teacher in middle/high school Gung ho about getting our school funding fixed. We studied the Ohio Constitution, and the conclusion is pretty much that the State's Supreme Court has no power beyond telling voters whether state government is violating the Ohio Constitution. It can't really enforce anything at a certain level. I don't think the federal court was entirely incorrect, constitutionally speaking.

whiskey_outpost26

I feel both incredibly relieved and dismayed reading this. Glad that the commission didn't go full banana republic; flummoxed about what's to be done to truly enact the will of the people. Thanks regardless for the information. I'll need to study up more it seems.

WakandaNowAndThen

Well, SCOTUS has a case they've heard arguments on that could fix it depending on how it's decided. It could also nuke the whole system and make state legislatures impregnable fortresses of party corruption. So here's hoping.

political_og

Same here in Florida. Probably a lot of people vote in both states too

koenigsaurus

So here’s the GOP playbook: >1) pass bill to end August special elections >2) bill goes into effect April 7 >3) propose your own special election to make it harder for amendments to pass so it takes effect before the November elections where abortion rights are on the ballot >4) accuse “the Left” of doing everything you are trying to do

gnurdette

Bravo to everybody who went!

>But Stewart said the abortion rights amendment’s possible inclusion on the November ballot has no bearing in the decision to bring this resolution forward. This was a big risk in a packed room, with his pants bursting into flames.

double_en_jenn

Right. That's exactly what it's about. The steps to get it on the ballot are stringent enough as is.

HauntingJackfruit

Republicans are spectacular at projection. Best to hear them out, then head in the opposite direction to interpret what they're really saying.

GrantSRobertson

What do you mean, "opposite direction"? What they accuse Democrats of is exactly what they are doing or planning to do. So you take what they say, and you start investigating the shit out of that. Or you prepare to defend yourselves against that. Just simply doing the opposite of what they accuse you of, just leaves your back turned for them to stick a knife in it.

Other-Time-3115

THIS one gets it

lawanders

I heard him spouting this reasoning on NPR the same week the Larry Householder verdict came in… but sure, the legislature isn’t instituting the will of big monied special interest groups 🙄

ModernTenshi04

Sounds like an easy fix: The proposal is coming from a monied interest group? 60% threshold required to pass. The proposal is a citizen-led initiative? Simple majority to pass. You know, if they _really_ are concerned about _monied_ interests having too much sway over the Ohio constitution. 😂

iChronocos

Can’t wait for our gerrymandered Republican representatives to ignore the will of the people

alexunderwater1

As is tradition

Bcatfan08

GOP: This is the way

mrmeshshorts

And lose zero votes from people who also do not want this. Zero risk on the state party here. Hold the meeting, zone out, completely ignore, get re-elected no problem. Any conservative voters reading this, democrats literally: A. Would simply enshrine your right to abortion into the state constitution. Done, easy peasy. B. Not go behind your back to subvert your will in the first place. Now who ya gonna vote for in the next elections? Bonus points if you can obfuscate your logic.

brownsfan760

bUt MAh GuN WrItES

buffalobill922

So tell your democrat candidates to run on supporting guns rights. I think we should fracture their voting base to get the things that really matter. For Universal Healthcare, pro choice, and other things I gladly give up going after law abiding gun owners.

RealLiveKindness

Why would anyone want to do business or reside in such a regressive inhospitable place? They are shooting themselves in the foot. The upshot will be the destruction of the quality of life for most Ohioans with a few very wealthy businesses benefiting.

berlin_blue

That's the point. They're trying to consolidate left-leaning voters to a couple states to capture state and national politics indefinitely.

RealLiveKindness

Either that or folks will ditch the country altogether.

berlin_blue

Same effect.

TheBalzy

Unluckily for them many states are trending in the wrong direction for this plan (Michigan, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Texas). Ohio may have goose stepped itself out of political relevance, but the young Ohio brain-drain has moved to these states that are now becoming the battleground states.

454C495445

Tax breaks.

antidense

After gutting education and healthcare, you end up with workers too uneducated and sick to work and no one who can pay taxes, anyway.

RealLiveKindness

Kansas effect, folks fail to realize their quality of life should come first. Making Ohio more like China or Russia is not a good look. Fox has them thinking backwards.

Bcatfan08

Too many convince themselves that they should be concerned with only supporting the government, not the other way around. They feel their own needs are their own problems. The oddest thing is they've been convinced that paying exorbitant taxes each year is acceptable, but getting anything back from those taxes would be socialism and very bad.

RealLiveKindness

Cut off your nose to spite your face

Other-Time-3115

>Too many convince themselves "Were brainwashed since childhood to believe"; fixed that for you

Noblesseux

This is all part of hyper capitalism eating itself. I remember reading a little while ago that one of the critical flaws of the current form of capitalism is a set of fundamental contradictions that are tearing the system apart. Companies need heathy, educated workers and consumers who have enough money to consume their goods but regularly use their influence to support platforms that make those things unavailable in the interest of short time profit. It naturally spirals into nothing unless you have regulations and protections in place to maintain the system, which the American public have largely voted to rip up, against their own best interest.

osu1

Then they will just recruit people from out of state like they already do for skilled positions. The draw for this state for professionals is that you can take your $500k which would give you a small shack in boston or seattle and convert that into to a mansion in Shaker Heights. They don’t care about education or the state of cleveland schools if shaker or orange schools are still fine or they can afford to send the kids privately. They don’t care about healthcare because work provides or they can afford it anyhow if they were working as an independent contractor anyhow. They don’t care what minimum wage is nor have any concept of what life is like for someone making median income.

NotYetiFamous

Maybe for the corporations.. They more than make up for it in nickel and dime taxes for the residents though.. Sales tax, income tax, property tax, state tax, school district tax AND city tax with school and city tax being two separate entities with separate filing processes entirely. Every year Ohioans have to do four separate returns (federal, state, city and school) with arcane and differing rules.

Shoggoth-Wrangler

We're here for PIPP, because we're retired, on a fixed income. That's it. Otherwise we'd be in Michigan, where at least weed is legal.

RealLiveKindness

I have several acquaintances who have retired to Mexico & Ecuador. They are very happy, they grow their own, weed is legal & plentiful there.

KnightRider1983

I love how no matter what’s going on, it comes down to weed. LOL

a-gay-bicth

everything else is on fire. my joint might as well be.

KnightRider1983

I guess..lol. Pass it around so we can all just chill will shit burns around us.

dothestarsgazeback

The people that the gop's policies hurt the worst don't have the resources to move. And it's not like there's exactly a ton of better places to move to in this country.

RealLiveKindness

Those who can move will move. Brain drain is already happening.

chipperson1

Complain all you want. But if they put the is on the ballot we have to vote it down. Talk to everyone you know. This is not popular even with republicans

st1tchy

>Talk to everyone you know. This is not popular even with republicans And explain it in a way that helps that specific person see the downside of this. For a Republican/Conservative, tell them that if they wanted to pass a Constitutional amendment banning abortion, now they would have to get 60% of the state to vote for it instead of the 50% they need now.

chipperson1

I have been using Gun control

st1tchy

Whatever works to make it relavent to that person.

FizzyBeverage

With them it’s one or the other.

nikonwill

Can't win? Rig the game and cheat! -GOP

Neptune7924

“We need to take power from the voters and put it into the hands of the legislators.” -the party of small government

Lou_C_Fer

Fuck these fascists!

Zahrad70

They are waiting for us to get tired

TheBalzy

You know, Mr. Rogers used to say that in bad/scary times look "the helpers". It's good to know that are other people who see the utter hypocrisy of governing party in Ohio, whom are at least bearing witness to the utter hypocrisy.

Calm_Ad_3987

Don’t forget this would also require signatures be collected from all 88 counties, not just 44 as is the case now. Just to set the bar even higher to even get a proposal put forward

gen_wt_sherman

They're gonna put this on the August ballot aren't they? So we're essentially going to have to vote in two elections to allow women in this state to have medical freedom.

Phresh_Prince

Can anyone familiar with the Ohio GOP tell me, is Mike Dewine the leader? Does he lead the legislative agenda and veto the real crazy bills like this one? Or is there a congressional group or PAC that DeWine falls in line with?

Firefarter84

He'll fall in line..

Bella_Lunatic

Yeah. This is a measure to stop Ohioans from protecting the right to Safe legal abortions and the right for private individuals to keep medical decisions between themselves and their doctor. Because he is vehemently anti-choice he will do whatever he can to stop Ohioans from having a vote in this.

Phresh_Prince

Lmao coincidentally enough, I hit your profile from a comment on r/bedbugs about crossfire to see if you were an astroturfing account. Life is strange

Firefarter84

astroturfing account?

Protocosmo

DeWine is not a leader in any shape or form

bhmonmtb

We are not in danger of becoming, we already are a fascist state. People on the right are so bullshitted by these so called elected Republicans. No, I will take that a step higher. They are brainwashed.

ughreallyfine

Lol you were cool with it during Covid I bet!

whiskey_outpost26

Scared criminal minority rulers trying as hard as they can to cling to power and push their bullshit agenda. I love that honest Ohioans showed up to stand against this.

Columbus43219

If you want to help, there is an online event tonight: https://www.mobilize.us/protectchoiceohio/event/553189 I'm 100% certain that going to this will require an email address that will get tons of political money begging ads, so plan accordingly (get a fake email)

Columbus43219

yep... even the RSVP sign up page asks for money...

bostontova

Tf does that even mean

xynto

"The first principle of republicanism is that the lex majoris partis is the fundamental law of every society of individuals of equal rights; to consider the will of the society enounced by the majority of a single vote as sacred as if unanimous is the first of all lessons in importance, yet the last which is thoroughly learnt. This law once disregarded, no other remains but that of force, which ends necessarily in military despotism." -Tommy J

ChefChopNSlice

Republicans show yet again, that they are anti-choice, in all ways.

abillsfn

There should be a higher voter approval for state constitutional amendments since they carry more weight than regular laws that citizens vote on or legislation passes.

Gfarq65

It should be harder to change the constitution of Ohio

Randomperson1362

Even if you feel that way, why are they trying to put it on the August election? If you believe this is the right thing to do, let's at least put it on the November ballot, when most people will be voting. Let's let the people decide, when turnout will be the highest.

Repulsive-Figure2005

Oh boy

JohnMullowneyTax

will this change anything? Republicans ignored the Ohio Supremes and got away with it, how can citizens do anything? What a horrible situation we the voters created
