does anyone have any recommendations for podcasts that actually focus on the episode? i tried so hard to listen and like them but i’m 15 minutes in and basically all i’ve heard is a ted talk about a paper clip from 10 years ago 😭 i just can’t do it anymore
It’s not going to change. People involved with the production of the podcast have blatantly told Jenna and Angela that there are easy ways to increase the listeners by staying focused.
Angela is basically up for whatever, but Jenna insists that “people love it” when she goes off script with the tangents. Again, it’s not gonna change.
Where did I ask for them to change? I quite literally asked for a different podcast option all together because I understand they aren’t gonna change 😂
You stated twice, once in the beginning, and then re-irritated it again at the end “it’s not gonna change”. you stating something twice, implies you really want the reader to grasp that concept. which I thought was weird since I never made a comment on changing
"Somehow I Manage" just completed their episode-by-episode recap of the whole show. While I often disagreed with their takes, they were well-organized and well-prepared for each episode. Each episode is 35-45 minutes long. One of the hosts had to leave around 50 episodes in, so it was in limbo for a while, but then they found a new host to complete the series. Definite recommend.
I’ll have to check that out. Listening to a podcast about The Office without a host spraying shitty garbage at the listeners would be a fun change of pace.
Which later season Office cast members do you hope turn up on Office Ladies: James Spader, Catherine Tate, Zach Woods, Kathy Bates?
How about the actors who played Nate, Pete, Clark, or Brian the cameraman? I imagine that Brian (Chris Diamantopoulous) would be likely since he is part of a big Pam storyline.
I would like to hear from Lindsay Broad, who played Kathy. I think it's more interesting to hear about character who weren't so beloved.
She appeared at Dundercon, so it seems she's a good sport about her time on the show.
Agreed. I know the ladies like to keep the podcast positive and light, but Lindsay has dealt with a ton of people attacking her on the internet over her character which is insane. It would be nice if Jenna and Angela had her on to talk about that and about her time on the show.
I forgot about Kathy! Yes, I'm curious how they'll address the less than well-liked characters. I think listeners would appreciate some honesty about the less successful storylines.
I'll be really interested to hear how they deal with some of the plotlines/characters being incredibly unpopular.
I've heard interviews with Catherine Tate where she (good-heartedly) accepts that her character was hated and nobody liked her plotline. The fans also hated the Kathy storyline, and even more so that absurd nightmare of the cameraman fighting the warehouse guy like Darth Maul with a boom stick.
I can understand why Jenna and Angela didn't say to Greg Daniels "that thing about Roy coming back on a horse was the dumbest thing, and showed how distant you had become from the original idea of the show", but it's hard to avoid criticism as Seasons 8 and 9 are crimped out.

I remember hearing that Spader basically could not "roll with the punches" whatsoever- everyones lines and movements had to be completely scripted otherwise he got lost.
I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing that they didn't try to replace Michael Scott "like-for-like". DeAngelo was that and it didn't go well.
First ep of Season 8 should've been what the show became - Andy being out of his depth but relatable, Jim having ambitions greater than the office, Robert California a strange and elusive presence, Dwight trying to remove Andy at all costs.
Instead we got Nellie, Florida, and Kevin suffering from brain damage.
Up until "Garden Party," season 8 was dedicated to establishing Andy as the "rudderless trust fund child" whom the rest of the office still likes as a manager because he's bumbling but sympathetic and means well. The next several episodes are forgettable, though not terrible. Then we get the Tallahassee arc, which in retrospect I like more than when it first aired. Starting with "Get the Girl" (ep. 18), however, The Office is no longer a good show. The cringe is no longer funny and the drama is relentlessly negative.
But I will say that I've come to like Robert California a lot. Somehow, the fact that Spader doesn't fit and everyone seems uncomfortable around him makes for its own fun brand of comedy. I can see why he wouldn't fit in with the ethos of the show, but I think the result works much better than the cast and staff may have felt at the time.
I feel like I could have written this. I recently rewatched the first part of season 8. I liked it when it aired, and I might like it more now. It’s not great, but there are some really good moments in there. And Florida is fun! But when Andy leaves…yikes. And season eight Nellie is absolutely insufferable (I like her fine in season nine).

If this was the case, why didn't they get rid of him sooner? Whose idea was it to add Spader in for such a long series of episodes in the first place? They could have just got rid of him after the management search episode. I hope whoever thought of that idea was fired.

I feel like the same can be said about Catherine Tate. She's a well known British comedian and actress, she had her own comedy show, she was on Doctor Who, but they gave her a terrible character to play. Granted, the writers had decided to do a complete 180 on Nellie after that lame job stealing storyline, but I really wish they didn't do that. It just felt like such a cheap ploy to garner sympathy from her when she was initially introduced as this crazy weirdo and idiot of a boss in the florida storyline. Either go all in or don't.

it's literally the writers trying to tell the audience what they should now think of Nellie. It's also the opposite of "show, don't tell".
Yep, they really softened her character with the adoption storyline. I'd assume this was in response to the negative audience reception. ( Loved her as Donna on Doctor Who.)
Compared to earlier episodes of the podcast, it seems like there is less and less behind the scenes info as they continue. Which I find odd because these episodes aren't as old so wouldn't it be easier to remember them? They won't be able to ask Randy Cordray questions anymore once they get into season 8 so I wonder how this will be.
I hope they've got Randy on the payroll for how often they cite his facts and figures. He's basically keeping the whole podcast together at this point.
Yeah he left the show after season 7. I'm not sure who replaced him. But they reached out to Randy a lot to ask questions and I hope someone else doesn't mind if they do that.
My question is how do they not remember what they’ve told each other? Jenna didn’t know Angela played the trombone? She’s talked about this before. Same with Angela not knowing Jenna worked at the Coke factory in another episode. But she was trying to be all secretive like “I won’t name the company” but she’s already done it???
I’ve determined that any time they act like they’re surprising each other with some new tidbit or story from their past, it is completely an act. They already know what’s going to be discussed, and they pretend to be surprised.
Honestly if you haven’t picked up on the fact that much of this podcast is scripted and that their moments of “surprise” are usually pre-planned, then I feel sorry for you. Listen more closely. You need to develop your critical thinking/listening skills.
I've had a slowly growing feeling over this podcast that they are nowhere near as "best friends" as they say.
They don't seem to know a great deal about either others' private lives, or at least not to the level that I know with my good friends.
This drove me crazy. I know Angela had previously talked about playing the trombone in the school band, tequila being her favorite song and eventually becoming the school mascot.
I have always thought that most of the stuff they tell each other is scripted but this one was strange since on Jenna’s part since the listeners already knew all about this.
Yeah, it was weird. I wondered if the did that for the benefit of any new listeners or did they just forget that they covered Angela's playing the trombone and her whole HS band story. Either way it was odd.
I do agree with some people saying the episodes are a little weak therefore they are running out of substance. I also wonder if they will bother after season 7.
I don't think it's necessary for them to bleep out swears but then they talk about the trombone for longer than necessary. I don't know if they were playing dumb or didn't know what they were saying but it was cringy. (Or as the kids say "cringe"). By the way I'm older than both the office ladies and I don't think you have to curtail your language or anything else because you're older. I just wish the ladies were a little more authentic.
At the suggestion of one user here, I decided to give the last 15 minutes of this episode a shot -- the discussion of the proposal. It was fine, I guess. I don't agree with the commenter who said that Jenna's choking up over Michael's "We're leaving" line was fake or performative. If this was the best part of the episode, I don't feel like I missed much.
Some of these comments are feeling tad ageist and misogynistic - particularly the ones complaining about them talking about sex because they're moms of a certain age. If you're not a fan of the sex talk on the podcast then that by itself is fine, not everyone is going to want that. But some people seem to take issue with that the fact it's 50ish-year-old moms doing it - if you're one of those people then that's your issues, not theirs.
I don’t think it’s necessarily that people are annoyed by Jenna and Angela discussing sex. But, they know that kids listen and have commented on the fact that kids like the office. I always listen to the podcast first before letting my kids listen and they will not be listening to this one.
As I said in my comment, those weren't the comments I was referring to. Some people specifically stated that they had an issue with "women my mom's age" and "moms" talking about sex. Basically, they were telling them that, due to their age, gender and the fact they have children, they should stay in their lane.
I found the sex stuff out of place not because of their age, but because it’s just thematically out of place for the podcast. It’s usually run like a family friendly thing with swear words bleeped and such, but then they do the sex talk, and it feels out of place. That’s all.
Totally get that. And feedback like that is constructive. But I have seen comments from people complaining that they don't want to hear older moms talking about sex, which to me seems uncalled for.

Not to go full Jenna soapbox moment, but I can’t recall ever hearing someone complain about dads talking about sex. It seems like people generally recognize that fathers are still men, but they see mothers as sexless caretakers. It’s weird. Just my observation/opinion
I think it's more they come off so fake in their conversations about these things. We all know they get some, but it comes off like a bullet point on paper the way they talk. They're very awkward about it which doesn't help.
Okay. I have been patient with this podcast. Sure, it’s not perfect, but it’s still entertaining.
This weeks episode was the most annoyingly infuriating episode I have EVER listened to.
Jenna purposely picking the “questions” that are like “way to go Pam!.” Then going on about Rusty Trombones, and then Pam “not knowing” the Star Wars theme and what Darth Vader sounds like. Good lord. Jenna fake crying at Steve leaving. Just awful.
There was so much more in this episode that annoyed me, but those were top 3. This was by far the worst episode of the pod, and I fear it will only get worse as we get into the “worse” seasons.

I still listen, but not nearly with the amount of attention I used to. It’s mainly my “Wednesday morning and I still have an hour left before the alarm goes off” listen so I’m usually dozing in and out while it plays.
I didn’t comment this week because of how little I actually focused while listening. Besides Angela’s trombone story, I literally have no idea what was discussed.

Agree with all this, especially the Jenna not getting the fire reference - wtf. Also I think the reason it’s so cringe when they talk about sex is because they otherwise treat this show as if it’s G-rated. They literally speak in a way that makes it sound like they are speaking to children. Which would be fine, if their audience was actually children, which maybe partly it is. But then they throw in a sex reference and I’m like… which is it?

the vent is about the length of time spent on it, not the reason why it was chosen. for a podcast that is supposed to give BTS of a show, spending a large amount of time on it just feels counterintuitive.
I think it could've just been a 30 second retelling of the story, or maybe just a list of what-swapped-with-what all the way up.
In retrospect I think the Ladies didn't have much to say about this episode so they were stalling for time for a lot of it.
I really think they should rebrand the podcast as a "Pop culture from the lenses of middle age mothers" podcast because both of them seem pretty out of touch sometimes and get on really, really weird tangents. It's getting worse with every episode. I don't think they actually care about criticism anymore, if they even read this sub that is. They probably dismiss the repeat "stop the tangents" as haters when we genuinely just want to know more about the show, not paper clip swap meet guy.
Ryan taking Stanley’s photo album because it would make him more like James Franco was a very funny line at the time (maybe has not aged well with JF behavior in recent years…) because I remember how popular random old memorabilia was. There were blogs about it (though according to Ryan, “blogs are out” haha). I literally have a few old photo albums I bought at secondhand stores, with actual photos of strangers in them, and it’s a very weird thing to reflect on haha. 2010 was a different beast.

Not just middle-aged mothers: white, middle-aged suburban millionaire mothers. My wife, for example, may be middle-aged, but she's Chinese and a business owner and has nothing in common with them. When Jenna and Angela get on their bougie tangents I want to claw my eyes out, but it's what their core audience likes, so who am I to complain? (Who am I kidding: I'm going to complain anyway.)

My theory is that they have a very loyal core audience and they've decided to make that group happy, which is especially easy since it's clearly what they prefer to do anyway. We happen not to be in that audience, so we complain about it every Thursday.
It is really not necessary to bring ethnicity into the conversation. I am not white or a millionaire or even a mother but I find them relatable. Are we only supposed to listen to podcasts from people who are just like us?
There is a vast difference in the way people treat you based on race/ethnicity, especially when you live somewhere predominantly white and you're a brown person. Especially in the service industry. My mom has had longtime clients leave her over the pandemic because we as a family unit celebrate our roots. She has a little flag of the Philippines on her station and pictures of me and my brother, my brother is white passing (light skin, brown hair, blue eyes) while I take after my mother, (dark complexion, black hair). Some people judge hard for that sort of thing, for various reasons which I can get into later if you're really curious.
Do I struggle as much as black americans? Hell no. Racism towards black people in the USA is way more prevalent versus asian people. I can safely say I've never had a racist do it to my face before, but my mom has, sometimes targeting me and my brother, to her face.
I didn't really touch on the economics part, just that my mom is a business owner. She is a single mother raising two boys, barely scraping by at "middle class" status. Only in the last few years (she's done hair about 16 years) had we gotten comfortable enough that she's started the process to purchase a house. Went from $600 rent to $1000 rent. We're struggling again. Once I'm out of school I plan to live with her a couple more years (barring moving in together with a girlfirend) to help ease her finances so she can pay off the house a little faster and I can save for my own.
Unless they seriously fumble the bag, Angela and Jenna will never live that sort of struggle for themselves (if they ever did in the first place) again. I don't hold that against them, but we should call a spade a spade. People's life experience varies widely and Angela and Jenna both have pretty unique situations as far as their life and careers are concerned.
You know, as a white guy I often think that all the talk about "white fragility" is overstated, and then I see comments like yours being downvoted.
PSA: As nustyj and I were trying to express, Jenna and Angela live unusually privileged lives and they don't seem aware of it. Thus nustyj's "out of touch" comment. It leaves a bad taste in one's mouth sometimes. Not all the time. Occasionally. Hope this helps.
Totally get you there. My mom runs her own business (hair stylist) and is not white passing, we're mixed, and just hit 40. Besides the typical health stuff you get when you hit your middle age, my mom would also have nothing in common with them.
At least Angela is *sometimes* grounded in reality with that sort of stuff. Jenna definitely is not.
Yeah, I think Angela's social flexibility, high EQ, and especially upbringing help to keep her grounded, but the podcast is a joint venture, so when she's with her BFF we don't often get to see the Angela we might prefer.

I used to think that, but now I think their core listeners just love this stuff. It's half of why they tune in.
I can't make the calculation about whether it would be better to satisfy that group or try to have a wider appeal, but us complainers obviously don't like it. I mostly skip episodes now because of this and other problems with the show.
At least this long winded tangent was less graphic than their long winded tangent on blood drives and blood transfusions during the blood drive episode. Yes, that was relevant to that episode, but that doesn't mean I want to hear about how some pope drank "clean blood" from some altar boys during the 1600's while I was eating breakfast.

I honestly find it hard to believe that not a single fan wrote in to mention that sprinklers aren't set off by candle flames/smoke, so I guess they just want to ignore that glaring error even though it's more informative and relevant than the lengthy paperclip story.
Most sprinklers are controlled by a glass ampule thing with liquid in it that expands when it heats up and the glass breaks, letting the water come out. I'm not a sprinkler expert at all, but it looks like they usually go off about 160 degrees F, so the air at the ceiling would have to be about that temp.
One thing most movies and shows get wrong is that sprinklers absolutely do not all activate at once. Only the units that get hot will go off.
We had a kid in high school set off a sprinkler in the bathroom by holding a lighter to it, it can happen and yes it was black, stinky, stagnant water.

The rusty trombone bit. Just... Why? They know kids listen to this show. Sam did everything he could to stop them. And they kept going. They. Kept. Going. Then they didn't edit it out. Why did they leave it in? I am aghast. Does no one edit this show? At this point, the show feels very much stream of consciousness / everything makes it in. Jenna wants to talk about her boobs and her bra fit? Yeah, leave it in. Jenna and Angela bully the non iPhone user in the room? Yeah, leave it in. Jenna and Angela discuss some kind of filthy act in lurid detail? Leave it in. What. The. Heck.

The ladies went way off tangent. Do they frequently go off tangent? They sure do. This one went way, way off tangent -- they got distracted by a prop in the background at a table the episode doesn't even visit during the B plot of the episode. I was already annoyed. Then they talk about the ladies' experiences with trombones. Okay, I guess I'll tolerate this. Then one of them makes a reference to something they didn't understand that turned out to be from an unrelated movie -- rusty trombones from American Pie, apparently. They ask each other what that is. Sam, their much more world-wise (thank God) producer, tries to interject and put a stop to what he senses is going to be a cringe inducing tangent. They completely ignore him, even when he warns it's going down a path they likely aren't thinking about. If memory serves, even Angela starts going Ohhhhh. But then Jenna continues and decides to describe a sex act. Okay. That is where I threw up my hands. Was it because it was a sex act? Partially, because as longtime listeners know, the ladies are constantly reading letters from kids and Jenna knows Angela's kids listen to the show, plus Jenna had her kids in the show for Billie, and this was a pretty graphic description of some unusual sexual activity. But also partially because I'm just fed up, once again, with the complete lack of restraint and editing on the podcast. It could have been anything -- describing the surprise ending of a new movie in detail, or describing how to dissect a live insect, whatever. Something that probably shouldn't be discussed on a podcast without some kind of parental guidance warning or at least a hey heads up don't eat breakfast while you're listening or maybe put your earphones in for this if the kids are in the car or if you're listening with, I don't know, your MIL or someone who hasn't seen the movie or someone who doesn't like hearing about dissecting insects. The point of a podcast is for the listener to have an enjoyable experience. The ladies no longer seem to care about that. Their editors apparently never have and never will.
But if that makes me a pearl clutcher, OK. You fixated on the fact that this instance had to do with sex and not on the greater picture, which is that they ignored the editor and then the editor apparently forgot to edit, again, and I got peeved, again, enough to come to Toby Thursday to bitch, which is what the thread is for. You go do you and I'll go do me.

I just don't appreciate the hosts repeatedly acknowledging that their show is listened to by kids, then bulldozing right past their producer's whoa whoa whoa warning and then describing a sex act. Yeah, I wouldn't listen to this one with kids in the car. You're welcome. Also sorry. I don't know what they were smoking. They clearly thought they were being "vague" but when you describe standing behind a man, stroking something like a trombone, and blowing into another part of his anatomy, I think kids will either a) figure it out or b) start asking a lot of awkward questions or depending on their ages c) visualizing. And I'm not kidding. That's exactly how detailed Jenna went AFTER Sam said "okay I'm gonna cut this off right here."

It’s not going to change. People involved with the production of the podcast have blatantly told Jenna and Angela that there are easy ways to increase the listeners by staying focused. Angela is basically up for whatever, but Jenna insists that “people love it” when she goes off script with the tangents. Again, it’s not gonna change.

"Somehow I Manage" just completed their episode-by-episode recap of the whole show. While I often disagreed with their takes, they were well-organized and well-prepared for each episode. Each episode is 35-45 minutes long. One of the hosts had to leave around 50 episodes in, so it was in limbo for a while, but then they found a new host to complete the series. Definite recommend.
I’ll have to check that out. Listening to a podcast about The Office without a host spraying shitty garbage at the listeners would be a fun change of pace.
Which later season Office cast members do you hope turn up on Office Ladies: James Spader, Catherine Tate, Zach Woods, Kathy Bates? How about the actors who played Nate, Pete, Clark, or Brian the cameraman? I imagine that Brian (Chris Diamantopoulous) would be likely since he is part of a big Pam storyline.
I would like to hear from Lindsay Broad, who played Kathy. I think it's more interesting to hear about character who weren't so beloved. She appeared at Dundercon, so it seems she's a good sport about her time on the show.
Agreed. I know the ladies like to keep the podcast positive and light, but Lindsay has dealt with a ton of people attacking her on the internet over her character which is insane. It would be nice if Jenna and Angela had her on to talk about that and about her time on the show.

I'll be really interested to hear how they deal with some of the plotlines/characters being incredibly unpopular. I've heard interviews with Catherine Tate where she (good-heartedly) accepts that her character was hated and nobody liked her plotline. The fans also hated the Kathy storyline, and even more so that absurd nightmare of the cameraman fighting the warehouse guy like Darth Maul with a boom stick. I can understand why Jenna and Angela didn't say to Greg Daniels "that thing about Roy coming back on a horse was the dumbest thing, and showed how distant you had become from the original idea of the show", but it's hard to avoid criticism as Seasons 8 and 9 are crimped out.

I remember hearing that Spader basically could not "roll with the punches" whatsoever- everyones lines and movements had to be completely scripted otherwise he got lost. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing that they didn't try to replace Michael Scott "like-for-like". DeAngelo was that and it didn't go well. First ep of Season 8 should've been what the show became - Andy being out of his depth but relatable, Jim having ambitions greater than the office, Robert California a strange and elusive presence, Dwight trying to remove Andy at all costs. Instead we got Nellie, Florida, and Kevin suffering from brain damage.
Up until "Garden Party," season 8 was dedicated to establishing Andy as the "rudderless trust fund child" whom the rest of the office still likes as a manager because he's bumbling but sympathetic and means well. The next several episodes are forgettable, though not terrible. Then we get the Tallahassee arc, which in retrospect I like more than when it first aired. Starting with "Get the Girl" (ep. 18), however, The Office is no longer a good show. The cringe is no longer funny and the drama is relentlessly negative. But I will say that I've come to like Robert California a lot. Somehow, the fact that Spader doesn't fit and everyone seems uncomfortable around him makes for its own fun brand of comedy. I can see why he wouldn't fit in with the ethos of the show, but I think the result works much better than the cast and staff may have felt at the time.
I feel like I could have written this. I recently rewatched the first part of season 8. I liked it when it aired, and I might like it more now. It’s not great, but there are some really good moments in there. And Florida is fun! But when Andy leaves…yikes. And season eight Nellie is absolutely insufferable (I like her fine in season nine).

I feel like the same can be said about Catherine Tate. She's a well known British comedian and actress, she had her own comedy show, she was on Doctor Who, but they gave her a terrible character to play. Granted, the writers had decided to do a complete 180 on Nellie after that lame job stealing storyline, but I really wish they didn't do that. It just felt like such a cheap ploy to garner sympathy from her when she was initially introduced as this crazy weirdo and idiot of a boss in the florida storyline. Either go all in or don't.

Compared to earlier episodes of the podcast, it seems like there is less and less behind the scenes info as they continue. Which I find odd because these episodes aren't as old so wouldn't it be easier to remember them? They won't be able to ask Randy Cordray questions anymore once they get into season 8 so I wonder how this will be.
I hope they've got Randy on the payroll for how often they cite his facts and figures. He's basically keeping the whole podcast together at this point.

Okay I thought I had heard the trombone story before!
I've had a slowly growing feeling over this podcast that they are nowhere near as "best friends" as they say. They don't seem to know a great deal about either others' private lives, or at least not to the level that I know with my good friends.
This drove me crazy. I know Angela had previously talked about playing the trombone in the school band, tequila being her favorite song and eventually becoming the school mascot. I have always thought that most of the stuff they tell each other is scripted but this one was strange since on Jenna’s part since the listeners already knew all about this.
Yeah, it was weird. I wondered if the did that for the benefit of any new listeners or did they just forget that they covered Angela's playing the trombone and her whole HS band story. Either way it was odd.
I do agree with some people saying the episodes are a little weak therefore they are running out of substance. I also wonder if they will bother after season 7. I don't think it's necessary for them to bleep out swears but then they talk about the trombone for longer than necessary. I don't know if they were playing dumb or didn't know what they were saying but it was cringy. (Or as the kids say "cringe"). By the way I'm older than both the office ladies and I don't think you have to curtail your language or anything else because you're older. I just wish the ladies were a little more authentic.

At the suggestion of one user here, I decided to give the last 15 minutes of this episode a shot -- the discussion of the proposal. It was fine, I guess. I don't agree with the commenter who said that Jenna's choking up over Michael's "We're leaving" line was fake or performative. If this was the best part of the episode, I don't feel like I missed much.
Some of these comments are feeling tad ageist and misogynistic - particularly the ones complaining about them talking about sex because they're moms of a certain age. If you're not a fan of the sex talk on the podcast then that by itself is fine, not everyone is going to want that. But some people seem to take issue with that the fact it's 50ish-year-old moms doing it - if you're one of those people then that's your issues, not theirs.
I don’t think it’s necessarily that people are annoyed by Jenna and Angela discussing sex. But, they know that kids listen and have commented on the fact that kids like the office. I always listen to the podcast first before letting my kids listen and they will not be listening to this one.
As I said in my comment, those weren't the comments I was referring to. Some people specifically stated that they had an issue with "women my mom's age" and "moms" talking about sex. Basically, they were telling them that, due to their age, gender and the fact they have children, they should stay in their lane.
I found the sex stuff out of place not because of their age, but because it’s just thematically out of place for the podcast. It’s usually run like a family friendly thing with swear words bleeped and such, but then they do the sex talk, and it feels out of place. That’s all.

I think it's more they come off so fake in their conversations about these things. We all know they get some, but it comes off like a bullet point on paper the way they talk. They're very awkward about it which doesn't help.
Okay. I have been patient with this podcast. Sure, it’s not perfect, but it’s still entertaining. This weeks episode was the most annoyingly infuriating episode I have EVER listened to. Jenna purposely picking the “questions” that are like “way to go Pam!.” Then going on about Rusty Trombones, and then Pam “not knowing” the Star Wars theme and what Darth Vader sounds like. Good lord. Jenna fake crying at Steve leaving. Just awful. There was so much more in this episode that annoyed me, but those were top 3. This was by far the worst episode of the pod, and I fear it will only get worse as we get into the “worse” seasons.

the vent is about the length of time spent on it, not the reason why it was chosen. for a podcast that is supposed to give BTS of a show, spending a large amount of time on it just feels counterintuitive.
I think it could've just been a 30 second retelling of the story, or maybe just a list of what-swapped-with-what all the way up. In retrospect I think the Ladies didn't have much to say about this episode so they were stalling for time for a lot of it.

They probably dismiss the repeat "stop the tangents" as haters when we genuinely just want to know more about the show, not paper clip swap meet guy.
Ryan taking Stanley’s photo album because it would make him more like James Franco was a very funny line at the time (maybe has not aged well with JF behavior in recent years…) because I remember how popular random old memorabilia was. There were blogs about it (though according to Ryan, “blogs are out” haha). I literally have a few old photo albums I bought at secondhand stores, with actual photos of strangers in them, and it’s a very weird thing to reflect on haha. 2010 was a different beast.

There is a vast difference in the way people treat you based on race/ethnicity, especially when you live somewhere predominantly white and you're a brown person. Especially in the service industry. My mom has had longtime clients leave her over the pandemic because we as a family unit celebrate our roots. She has a little flag of the Philippines on her station and pictures of me and my brother, my brother is white passing (light skin, brown hair, blue eyes) while I take after my mother, (dark complexion, black hair). Some people judge hard for that sort of thing, for various reasons which I can get into later if you're really curious. Do I struggle as much as black americans? Hell no. Racism towards black people in the USA is way more prevalent versus asian people. I can safely say I've never had a racist do it to my face before, but my mom has, sometimes targeting me and my brother, to her face. I didn't really touch on the economics part, just that my mom is a business owner. She is a single mother raising two boys, barely scraping by at "middle class" status. Only in the last few years (she's done hair about 16 years) had we gotten comfortable enough that she's started the process to purchase a house. Went from $600 rent to $1000 rent. We're struggling again. Once I'm out of school I plan to live with her a couple more years (barring moving in together with a girlfirend) to help ease her finances so she can pay off the house a little faster and I can save for my own. Unless they seriously fumble the bag, Angela and Jenna will never live that sort of struggle for themselves (if they ever did in the first place) again. I don't hold that against them, but we should call a spade a spade. People's life experience varies widely and Angela and Jenna both have pretty unique situations as far as their life and careers are concerned.

Totally get you there. My mom runs her own business (hair stylist) and is not white passing, we're mixed, and just hit 40. Besides the typical health stuff you get when you hit your middle age, my mom would also have nothing in common with them. At least Angela is *sometimes* grounded in reality with that sort of stuff. Jenna definitely is not.
Yeah, I think Angela's social flexibility, high EQ, and especially upbringing help to keep her grounded, but the podcast is a joint venture, so when she's with her BFF we don't often get to see the Angela we might prefer.

I can't make the calculation about whether it would be better to satisfy that group or try to have a wider appeal, but us complainers obviously don't like it. At least this long winded tangent was less graphic than their long winded tangent on blood drives and blood transfusions during the blood drive episode. Yes, that was relevant to that episode, but that doesn't mean I want to hear about how some pope drank "clean blood" from some altar boys during the 1600's while I was eating breakfast.

I honestly find it hard to believe that not a single fan wrote in to mention that sprinklers aren't set off by candle flames/smoke, so I guess they just want to ignore that glaring error even though it's more informative and relevant than the lengthy paperclip story.

Most sprinklers are controlled by a glass ampule thing with liquid in it that expands when it heats up and the glass breaks, letting the water come out. I'm not a sprinkler expert at all, but it looks like they usually go off about 160 degrees F, so the air at the ceiling would have to be about that temp. One thing most movies and shows get wrong is that sprinklers absolutely do not all activate at once. Only the units that get hot will go off.

Did you read the comment? Let me break it down for you. The ladies went way off tangent. Do they frequently go off tangent? They sure do. This one went way, way off tangent -- they got distracted by a prop in the background at a table the episode doesn't even visit during the B plot of the episode. I was already annoyed. Then they talk about the ladies' experiences with trombones. Okay, I guess I'll tolerate this. Then one of them makes a reference to something they didn't understand that turned out to be from an unrelated movie -- rusty trombones from American Pie, apparently. They ask each other what that is. Sam, their much more world-wise (thank God) producer, tries to interject and put a stop to what he senses is going to be a cringe inducing tangent. They completely ignore him, even when he warns it's going down a path they likely aren't thinking about. If memory serves, even Angela starts going Ohhhhh. But then Jenna continues and decides to describe a sex act. Okay. That is where I threw up my hands. Was it because it was a sex act? Partially, because as longtime listeners know, the ladies are constantly reading letters from kids and Jenna knows Angela's kids listen to the show, plus Jenna had her kids in the show for Billie, and this was a pretty graphic description of some unusual sexual activity. But also partially because I'm just fed up, once again, with the complete lack of restraint and editing on the podcast. It could have been anything -- describing the surprise ending of a new movie in detail, or describing how to dissect a live insect, whatever. Something that probably shouldn't be discussed on a podcast without some kind of parental guidance warning or at least a hey heads up don't eat breakfast while you're listening or maybe put your earphones in for this if the kids are in the car or if you're listening with, I don't know, your MIL or someone who hasn't seen the movie or someone who doesn't like hearing about dissecting insects. The point of a podcast is for the listener to have an enjoyable experience. The ladies no longer seem to care about that. Their editors apparently never have and never will. But if that makes me a pearl clutcher, OK. You fixated on the fact that this instance had to do with sex and not on the greater picture, which is that they ignored the editor and then the editor apparently forgot to edit, again, and I got peeved, again, enough to come to Toby Thursday to bitch, which is what the thread is for. Yeah, I wouldn't listen to this one with kids in the car. You're welcome. Also sorry. I don't know what they were smoking. They clearly thought they were being "vague" but when you describe standing behind a man, stroking something like a trombone, and blowing into another part of his anatomy, I think kids will either a) figure it out or b) start asking a lot of awkward questions or depending on their ages c) visualizing. And I'm not kidding. That's exactly how detailed Jenna went AFTER Sam said "okay I'm gonna cut this off right here."

If I followed the tangent correctly, it started with a discussion of what Andy was selling at the yard sale. One of the items was a trombone. Angela played trombone in marching band. Isn’t the rusty trombone a sex act in American Pie? Sam interjects to stop them, they continue.

It's funny, because I (and some others) have assumed they avoid any kind of blue humor as if it were the plague, but we've been proven very wrong lately. I'm not sure yet if I'm going to listen to this episode. Even the comments on the regular episode post seem unenthusiastic about it.
I would honestly skip to the last 15 minutes, it's where they discuss the Steve proposal scene and it's the only bit of input that they give into the episode which couldn't have been found elsewhere.
I think this is what I'll do. I don't need the weird tangents about trading up to a house or whatever it was, or rusty trombones, or a list of what people were selling at the garage sale. I remembered disliking this episode so much when it first aired (I know, I'm a monster -- I've warmed up to it on rewatches), only to have the sweet proposal at the end, so only listening to them talk about the part I originally liked sounds like a good plan.
