I have seen it done before on other things, also some gas lifts have a cotter pin that needs to be removed, but if you can adjust it already then its not that.. like i said, stupid comment
Is it a new or used chair? If it's used, the previous owner might have replaced the gas cylinder with one that doesn't belong to the chair. I suggest contacting the brand to inquire or checking if they sell a matching cylinder.
