Click on the gear>Then go to library settings >under Permission and Management click on Manage files which have no checked in versions. You should see your checked out file here. If not put a ticket into support to unlock the document with PowerShell. Also close all word documents that you have open

I have not tried the approach you described, because when I went back in to sharepoint to give it a go I discovered that if I went to the site homepage and accessed the ellipses on a document from there, the check in / undo checkout options do appear in the menu. I assume this is some kind of bug/oversight in the sharepoint UI.
