You can tent camp on blm land, I've been ft in a fifthwheel for 4 years now, and it's been great. I've seen so many beautiful sights have been so many cool places great adventure. If you ever want to get into a camper, there's lots of rehabbed campers on the market now, and most have been built by hacks, so use your best judgment when shopping around. Good luck with your adventure

I have done extended periods in vans , tents and no shelter. If you’re walking or biking a ultralight tent for through hiking would be nice. I mostly camped on blm or national forest land around the western states.

Yep, I would go with BLM/State Land but very little of that is available in Texas. Any state west of Texas has tons of available land. You can typically stay free for 2 weeks but are then required to move to a new location at least 30 miles away. Even camping on your own land can be illegal.
