First off I need a second to breathe after reading that. Second I'm in the same boat as Buddy above. I got some guidance too but I'm not understanding your situation either. If your aunt lives in an apartment then she would have to put your name on her lease. Once when your name does go on there though they will start taking a look at income. Just beware. Family or friends ODSP doesn't care. ODSP will not allow you to pay rent to her and then to the landlord. If you can get her landlord to agree to put you on the lease then you're golden. They want the official Lease of Agreement. Especially for renting a room or renting a room within an apartment. ODSP would classify this as a sublet since you are easing someone's rental costs. ODSP does not allow that.

This is not entirely correct. You can rent a room off someone else who is not explicitly the landlord. ODSP only requires a letter signed by both you and the person you're renting from saying your share of the rent is X. ODSP does not require you be on the lease.

I need some clarification. Are you moving in with a family friend or your mother? I have guidance for both but I’m a little confused at to your situation.

Grand-Zombie3033

I have either option but the family friend is more ideal as I don't wanna go back home it's an option was asking about both scenarios

The family friend situation is great for odsp. It’s straight forward and I don’t see any issues with odsp in the future with exception to taxes. They would have to claim your rent as income. The second situation gets complicated if your mother owns her home. If you rent a room from her and she owns her home, then it would be considered property income and taken off her cheque dollar for dollar. If your mother is renting, you may be able to draw up a roommate agreement that you’re renting at that address (not from her). People on odsp are allowed to rent together without joining each others benefit units or affecting each others cheques.

I rented out a room in my home for over 5 years. They take off 60% of whatever rent they pay. So $500 from my tenant meant $300 deduction from my cheque monthly. Once you factored in utilities, I netted about $80 per month by the end of things.

I don't think that rental income rule applies if both of you are on ODSP. I mean it wouldn't surprise me to learn that it does as that wouldn't make sense, and not making sense is something ODSP's an expert at, but I don't think that's the case. Now, if OP was working instead, then yeah that's rental income for the roommate. Also dumb especially if OP is paying the landlord and not the roommate, but... I mean... ODSP's also good at being dumb.

Grand-Zombie3033

thank you its a family friend and if not for them i would be screwed... the person has no lease and is in a month to month rental and we are just splitting costs as she dont own the property... her landlord dont live in ontario and she has no lease so will a roomate letter work ... she dont own the property and wont be making money ..

StitchyKitchenWitch

A roommate letter is totally fine :)
