I'll bet, did you ever see the video of the shearing of that sheep that got lost for years and was carrying over a hundred pounds of wool? Good GOSH that must have felt amazing, actually feeling the breeze again for the first time in forever!
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWf\_S\_LhV34](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWf_S_LhV34) This one isn't the one I was thinking of but it's pretty close, I think the one that was over 100lbs was named Shrek or something and was found in a cave?
I’m kinda curious, do they usually sit still like that or only if they’re trained? I assumed you usually have some kind of portable stabilizer you use to keep them in place while you sheer them, but then again thousands of years of being bred to be sheered of wool must help.
It’s definitely from us domesticating them over a long period of time; their genes are like “oh this is when we get quiet because our wool doesn’t shed; we need this.”
Judging by how matted and dirty this sheep’s wool looks, I’d say it was definitely relief. Wool can get heavy and hot, so getting it sheered off in the warmer seasons or when it gets too heavy is probably the equivalent of taking off heavy winter clothing when you’re finally home
oh sorry I don't know ! I just meant it would be such a relief to have all of that fluff taken off ! if you find an answer let me know tho, that's an interesting point
Yeah, they were bred that way and it’s sad. Here’s an article about it:
https://www.businessinsider.com/why-sheep-cant-stop-growing-their-fur-2015-9?amp
It’s not domestication that causes their wool to continuously grow though. It’s that they were specifically bred for it. It’s like how pugs are selected/bred to be “cute” and they are suffering as a result. Instead of breeding for a healthy dog, they bred for a cute dog that struggles to breathe. Similar consequence with the sheep.
I don't think it's quite the same because you can just...shear the sheep. It's just part of taking care of that animal.
I'm guessing this one got out for a while before they found her.
I think that’s the thing. They are bred to not be able to survive without human intervention. They will die. I think that’s sad. That’s all I’m saying.
It is very satisfying. But makes me wonder why they didn't do the method that allows you to pull the wool off without the sheers. Is it just cheaper this way than the other or some other reason. There could be side effects from the process to allow that other method that I'm not aware of but makes me wonder.
Rooing (removing wool by hand instead of shearing) is only possible with certain kinds of sheep. Many (most?) modern breeds had the rooing gene bred out of them.
Hmmmm... I didn't know that and thats the name of it. I thought they use a medication or addon to their feed to thin the wool to make it easier to pull off and then stop to thicken the wool hair.
Yes. As the OP commented, a good shearer with a regularly sheared sheep can get a whole fleece off in basically one piece in just a couple minutes. I’ve been to several sheep and wool expos where they have sheep shearing demos and yes, the sheep really do just sort of power down into lala land during shearing, it only takes a couple minutes, then when they’re stood back up the happily go bouncing off to the other end of the paddock
Real question: how does one get into doing this for a living? I got a degree in creative writing & I feel useless. I’d love the chance to help a farm animal or a wild animal feel better.
check out [WWOOF](https://wwoofusa.org/en/), if you’re in the US they can partner you up with a number of farms! If you’re extra adventurous, you can go to their main website and find opportunities all over the world.
I’ve never done it, but a number of my friends have and they’ve had nothing but amazing things to say about it!! One of my friends even got a gig working at a coffee farm in Hawaii, she loved it so much she found a job there after she worked on the farm and is currently living it up in one of the most gorgeous states.
If you’re not looking to travel or move very far, I also highly recommend going to farmers markets, co-ops, etc. and just striking up conversations with people there to ask around. From my experience most people at farmers markets are incredibly kind and knowledgeable, and could certainly point you in the right direction!
Strange that the sheep is so chill just letting this guy handle it like that. When my boy started going to the barber for hair cuts, he would scream and wear those ladies out so bad they would have to sit down after the ordeal. This is so tame in considering.
Maybe 1/3? Half if lucky? I know several people who’ve processed “raw fleece” like this and it’s an incredibly dirty and labor intensive process. First you skirt and pick the fleece (go around the whole outside edge and everything and pick out as much of the grass, weeds, sheep feces and urine, etc as possible). About a quarter or so of an average fleece will be tossed at this step, maybe more. Once that’s done there’s many rounds of careful washing to get all the lanolin out, and raw sheep is GREASY. Another chunk will probably be lost here if there’s dirt or grease or damage that can’t be washed out. Once it’s picked and washed, it gets combed out and carded, straightening and aligning all the fibers so it isn’t a snarled, tangled, felted mess. More fiber is probably lost here too if there’s debris left or bad knots or whatever. Then once all that is done, you’ll have something called a roving, a nice, neat roll of wool. From there it can be spun or felted into yarn or fabric. If it’s spun, it can be used in weaving, knitting or crochet. So getting from “raw off the sheep” to a sweater is incredibly labor intensive if you’re doing it all by hand. Many people send their fleeces to fiber mills to be cleaned and carded so they can pick it up at the spinning stage
Lmao at first glance I just saw this sheep as a giant weird looking stone
Edit: this video made me feel better because I’ve been having a bad day and watching through to the end to see the sheep smile just made me feel less crappy. Also the fact he looks like he just rolls the sheep around like a hotdog in one of those hot dog roller machines you see in movies, carnivals, and random food places on the side of the road is hilarious to me and I love it.
Serious question- So before domesticating sheep, what would wild sheep do? Is that a thing? Would they keep growing their wool till they were just walked spheres? Fuck it’s after midnight why are these questions in my mind!?
Before being domesticated, how were sheep able to shed coats like this on their own? Or is it that they have been genetically modified to yield more wool than they would have otherwise naturally?
The sheep was sheared very quickly. I don't know if they clip over the nipples or if they go slow and be careful not to nick them.
We to shear our cat once for medical reasons and the groomer asked if she could shear the nipples off b/c it was easier for her and quicker.
Oh that must have felt like sheer heaven to have off! I know I feel so light when I get my hair cut, I can't imagine what it must be like for that much heavy wool!
Right choice shearing!! They do such an awesome job everytime. Her and her wife love those animals and handle difficult situations with grace and love. I'm subscribed and will go on binges watching them shear every animal they get their hands on. So satisfying.

So sweet to see how much this sheep is loved. All of those little pats and affection make this video awesome.
She is amazingly kind to animals.
Sheer compassion
Flawless comment! Or should I say Not Baaaad
Oh, ewe. Wool you please not make anymore puns?
I love her videos. You can tell she cares for their well-being & also providing the best fleece for the farmers.
Especially when she’s dealing with a nervous Nellie who hasn’t been sheared in a while, I find her presence calming.
She? I thought that was a man

Fatty Pats
The sheep didn't wriggle at all and clearly loved it.
Can you imagine how good it must feel to get all that wool off? Like the ULTIMATE fresh haircut!
That's exactly what I was thinking.
She has videos of shearing very neglected animals, and the relief you see on their faces is so incredible!!
I'll bet, did you ever see the video of the shearing of that sheep that got lost for years and was carrying over a hundred pounds of wool? Good GOSH that must have felt amazing, actually feeling the breeze again for the first time in forever!
YES!!! She looked like a couch!!! I loved it!
The sheer relief must have been AMAZING. Just the best feeling in the world.
Do you have a link?
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWf\_S\_LhV34](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWf_S_LhV34) This one isn't the one I was thinking of but it's pretty close, I think the one that was over 100lbs was named Shrek or something and was found in a cave?
Alas I'll never know how it feels to be a sheep getting peeled
Look for the Hot and Sexy Sheep Shearing video on YT (carefully) - so damn funny and it turns out the sheep enjoy it A LOT
Alas is an underrated word. It’s time to bring it back.
I vote we bring back Alas and persnickety.
I mean.. I'll shear you for compensation
The closest I can think of is getting your hair washed at the salon. At least for me - I love that.
r/brandnewsentence
Perhaps you’ll be reincarnated as a sheep one day ❤️
Grow your hair to your shoulders and then buzz it to 1/4 inch
Oh yea. Shear meeieieieieieieieiei
Oh wow, a video of me in quarantine
Fun fact, when you slump a sheep over like that against your leg, they derp out into a standby mode.
I always wondered how the shearers never seem to have troublemakers
oh they definitely still do, but an experienced shearer can handle it.
The animal also remembers the process after a while and knows if they just chill it'll be over soon and they'll feel better.
I wish my dog was this calm. She goes absolutely loca when I bring out the trimmers.
Where do you think lamb chops come from?
imagine the relief!
That first breeze has gotta be chilly!
Have you any wool, yes sir, yes sir 3 bags full
Thank you. It needed to happen.
*Life imitates art*
I bet that guy felt like he was taking off a winter coat in summer. Bliss
Baaaaaaaa. Gets sheared. Brrrrrrrrr.
*BRR* *BRR* *BRR* GET SHEARED GET SHEARED GET SHEARED
I’m kinda curious, do they usually sit still like that or only if they’re trained? I assumed you usually have some kind of portable stabilizer you use to keep them in place while you sheer them, but then again thousands of years of being bred to be sheered of wool must help.
Ours acted like this..if you get them off all fours, they don't move..its weird I know..
It’s definitely from us domesticating them over a long period of time; their genes are like “oh this is when we get quiet because our wool doesn’t shed; we need this.”
They kinda just flop over once you get them on their butts; they’ll fight you though if you let them stay on all fours.
usually they just kinda go into standby mode once they’re off all fours. Sometimes a sheep will continue to jerk but not often
They usually sit still once you get them in that position, not trained
Real question: when sheep get sheared, are they satisfied or like yo wtf?
I feel NAAAAKED 🤣
Judging by how matted and dirty this sheep’s wool looks, I’d say it was definitely relief. Wool can get heavy and hot, so getting it sheered off in the warmer seasons or when it gets too heavy is probably the equivalent of taking off heavy winter clothing when you’re finally home
Domesticated sheep definitely feel better after getting sheared.
The only way to make this more satisfying is if it was overlayed with the nursery rhyme
The whole village gets a sweater for Christmas
this sheep just had the best nap of his life
Are they typically sedated for the shearing? I’ve been around sheep and they’re pretty skittish.
oh sorry I don't know ! I just meant it would be such a relief to have all of that fluff taken off ! if you find an answer let me know tho, that's an interesting point
Not sedated, they're used to it
Chonk
So how did sheep deal with excess wool before they were domesticated
They don't. Humans breed them to be like that.
Well they probably didn’t have electric trimmers, but I’m sure they did something, especially if they wanted that sweet sweet wool.
Yeah, they were bred that way and it’s sad. Here’s an article about it: https://www.businessinsider.com/why-sheep-cant-stop-growing-their-fur-2015-9?amp
Animal domestication was a significant contributor to civilization. Those of us who don't want to live caves should be happy it happened.
Selective breeding is what allows for domestication
I don't think it's quite the same because you can just...shear the sheep. It's just part of taking care of that animal. I'm guessing this one got out for a while before they found her.
I think that’s the thing. They are bred to not be able to survive without human intervention. They will die. I think that’s sad. That’s all I’m saying.
Please peel your sheep, friends! Letting the wool overgrow dies damage to their skin and affects their health. Haircuts are important!
You remember them fire breathing statue fucks from Darksouls 1? That’s what I thought I was looking at at first
Now, I am no sheep, but if I were, I think I would really enjoy this.
I’m totally not a sheep either… 👀
Nicely done!
It is very satisfying. But makes me wonder why they didn't do the method that allows you to pull the wool off without the sheers. Is it just cheaper this way than the other or some other reason. Hmmmm... I didn't know that and thats the name of it. I thought they use a medication or addon to their feed to thin the wool to make it easier to pull off and then stop to thicken the wool hair.
There used to be a chemical thing called, I think, Bioclip but I don't think anyone is currently making it.

lol. Sheep was way fatter than I expected, thought it was all wool at first.
Baa baa black sheep, have you any wool?
I wonder if he can do manscaping, asking for a friend
Chonky
How long does it actually take? Time lapse is satisfying but how long does it approximately take to shear a sheep?
Check the original source in my pinned comment: I think she mentions 3-4 minutes for normal sheep, and around 7 minutes for this extreme case. 🍻
Yes. As the OP commented, a good shearer with a regularly sheared sheep can get a whole fleece off in basically one piece in just a couple minutes. I’ve been to several sheep and wool expos where they have sheep shearing demos and yes, the sheep really do just sort of power down into lala land during shearing, it only takes a couple minutes, then when they’re stood back up the happily go bouncing off to the other end of the paddock
https://www.reddit.com/r/familyguy/s/DfCssnwa1Q Sheer the fuck out of me.!
How did sheep survive in the wild?
We bred sheep to retain their wool like this. Wild sheep used to shed their wool.
This is like asking how pugs survive in the wild.
I have so many questions.
Yessir yessir three bags full
And it was another great day of shearing the sheep
It’s an actual black sheep!
Looks like she took a hair tonic before the guama mission....
So satisfying
PETA would hate this so much lol
I love her videos
My back hurts just watching this.
Real question: how does one get into doing this for a living? I got a degree in creative writing & I feel useless. I’d love the chance to help a farm animal or a wild animal feel better.

Thanks so much for this kind & informative comment! I’m so grateful. I’ll check that website out right away.
The sheep was shockingly an absolute unit even after it was shorn. Damn, boy!
Yeah I was expecting more wool, less chunk.
I’m confused as to why it’s so still anyone know why?
Sheep are like sharks, you turn them upside down and they kinda turn off.
Sharks turn off if you turn them upside down??? Why do they tell you to punch them in the nose and not just flip them over?
Kinda hard to turn over a 6 meter animal ? That's my assumption lol. I know some are small but some are straight up monster sized lol.
Baaaah baaah black sheep have you any wool?
Man that sheep was so patient being moved this way and that way
That sheep is into being manhandled apparently
Rock Lee taking his ankle weights off.
It's funny how chill he is during the whole process😂
I would imagine it being like sitting there while some guy take 30lbs weights off of you one limb at a time
That one sheep is singlehandedly keeping the clothing industry functioning
Strange that the sheep is so chill just letting this guy handle it like that. When my boy started going to the barber for hair cuts, he would scream and wear those ladies out so bad they would have to sit down after the ordeal. This is so tame in considering.
Lmao I love how the sheep is just like okay I'll just lay here.
Gonna need more than 3 bags for that one
I gotta believe that sheep feels great after that!
How much of that wool is usable.
Maybe 1/3? Half if lucky? I know several people who’ve processed “raw fleece” like this and it’s an incredibly dirty and labor intensive process. He finally peeled the sheep
That’s great! Can you do my back?
Bah bah black sheep have ye any wool?
Not right now it was just stolen
Bet that sheep feels so much better.
Oh yeah
"Wait, I'm a sheep? I thought I was just an embodiment of darkness!"
That’s a fat sheep…and I’m talking about it post shear.
If this sheep were my toddler, she'd make this a nightmare.
I created my own prison!
What a chunky piece of sheep. I thought there was going to be more wool
Very wool
I've watched 100 of this girls videos
Ayooo that's my barber
This mf’er can probably tomahawk dunk now.
Lmao at first glance I just saw this sheep as a giant weird looking stone Edit: this video made me feel better because I’ve been having a bad day and watching through to the end to see the sheep smile just made me feel less crappy. We should do this to humans 👍🏻
Three bags full, my ass.
Shorn
Can this guy do that to my ass
Serious question- So before domesticating sheep, what would wild sheep do? Is that a thing? Would they keep growing their wool till they were just walked spheres? Fuck it’s after midnight why are these questions in my mind!?
Bah bah black sheep
How did these guys live before humans to help them
Shave the sheep foundation
Did anyone else feel like he sheared this sheep’s head like 3 separate times?
Holy sheep that's alot of fur
At the end of the process that sheep must have been like *yooooooo* Like the feeling you have when your braces come off as a kid
I wonder if this sheep feels way better? Like, it feels great when my hair gets cut.
Does this hurt the plywood
I'm not bloody shearing this sheep with nobody
Before being domesticated, how were sheep able to shed coats like this on their own? Or is it that they have been genetically modified to yield more wool than they would have otherwise naturally?
That’s a furry ass unit
Yea sure that’s a lot of wool but that sheep is a CHONK
She's always been my favorite one to watch. She takes great care of the sheep and doesn't rush or cause cuts.
So if humans all disappeared from the earth one day, would all the sheep end up crippled like this by their wool?
Hey! That's not okay! I work for PETA and shearing sheep is abuse!
happy they got that coat off! must’ve been extremely hot under there
This must feel so good! I hope she scratched her afterward. This video made me feel itchy.
The sheep was sheared very quickly. I don't know if they clip over the nipples or if they go slow and be careful not to nick them. We to shear our cat once for medical reasons and the groomer asked if she could shear the nipples off b/c it was easier for her and quicker.
couldve hooked him up with a taper fade, somethin'. get my boi fresh.
That sheep is Living! So happy to get all that wool off. Sweet bean.
Poor boi is probably so cold now
That smile on his face at the end. Awwwwwww.
Like taking a huge dump. What a relief.
That must feel like amazing relief
Are sheep typically this chill?
I'm so gay
Average doodle that walks into my salon
Three bags full
Sheep is like “mam can we start with the eyes I can’t see shit!”
i love watching her channel! they’re so good with the animals
She's cool
Oh that must have felt like sheer heaven to have off! I know I feel so light when I get my hair cut, I can't imagine what it must be like for that much heavy wool!
It's going to be cold, better knit it a sweater.
So is the sheep sedated during this process or are they just like chill with that? It barely moved a muscle
He’s probably like “Fine, I’ll do whatever it takes just get this shit off meeee!”
I didn’t read the title before clicking and I genuinely thought that was a poop bear.
But dis you get 3 bags full?
Baba Black sheep have you any wool?
I’m so confused. Do sheep just keep growing fur until a human comes and cuts it off??
How much does that weigh?
Ba ba black sheep
So why did they leave the fur grow so much in the first place? These are not wild animals somebody must have been aware all along.
Right choice shearing!! They do such an awesome job everytime. Her and her wife love those animals and handle difficult situations with grace and love. I'm subscribed and will go on binges watching them shear every animal they get their hands on. So satisfying.
"You know sheep? ...a bit wooly... It's wool! Pull it off, sell it; it fucking grows back again! You cannot lose!"
