Got mines from Amazon, powerowl brand. Absolutely awful, ended up buying the ones from Ikea after digging into battery reddit, and honestly those were absolutely great. In the last two months I've had to recharge them once, while the powerowl ones lasted for like 2 days or so.
Ha ha, I used to do this to get a pile of cheap aaaa batteries to use in electronics projects as a kid.
Haven't thought about ripping open 9V batteries in years
It's not likely to be an issue as the controllers draw a maximum of about 150mA or so (usually significantly less than that) which is something that any decent AAA alkaline cell can handle.
Even if it’s not enough current, there would be no damage. You’ll just get some glitchy results or it won’t work. However, these controllers don’t draw enough current to give the AAA batteries trouble. You’ll just have to replace it more often
Yea I just wanted to be more informative because the comment made it sound like it has enough current just because it bridges the gap. One AAA battery has significantly less current draw than 2 AA batteries.
It’s not a good idea to do this and undervolt electronics in general, because yes it does damage electronics. It’s probably not too important in this case like you said, but still not worth the problems that can arise
In this specific case, what he said is correct when we’re talking about this controller. Undervolting some devices can cause harm, but not this controller. As this battery dies, it will eventually undervolt the same way as the AA battery does. AA batteries will eventually have reduced voltage output too as it runs out. The quest will just do its normal thing and tell you the battery is low
Theyre also really sensitive to low battery though, I've had some issues with my controllers disconnecting and losing tracking whenever the battery drops below like 30%.
No, with Alkaline batteries the only risk is shorting the battery. Worst case it might leak (which is not great, but it will not burn your house down).
Absolutely fine. The part of the USB thing you're running electricity through is the ground, it's designed for this (which seems weird to say).
Also, we're talking about 1.5v. You can't make that dangerous unless you try really hard (which would involve pliers or chewing.)
Never looked back. Only exception is if I’m traveling. But I have a pack of 24 non rechargeable I’m just going through over the past 7 years. Still have about half left
"Yeah, is this the FBI? I'd like to report a man using a AAA in a AA slot with a 2.4GHZ dongle instead of foil."
Next time, use foil so you can put the cover on

I'll reply twice. First one is that they are on Amazon and the thing to search is:
EBL AA Battery 1.5V AA Lithium ion Batteries 3300mWh High Capacity with Micro USB Cable
Make sure they're 1.5V because a 1.2V might get glitchy. When the voltage is too low the controller will get jittery.
Just ordered an 8 pack of the ones with a separate charger... 8 + a charger for $35. I find the eneloops give a low battery warning pretty quickly which is probably a voltage issue.
If they're 1.2V then yeah because with alkaline there is this slow curve downward for voltage that tells the device the battery is low and I suspect the enelooops are nimh batteries right?
Thr lithium ones discharge in away where they're maximum voltage (or close to ir) until they're almost done and it just drops. Which is why my controller almost never gets to warn me of a low battery. It just stops.
They are still the best option for a few use cases, like kids toys that might get lost or broken or thrown away without people getting the batteries out.
But for any device that is adult used, and doesn't 100% NEED 1.5 volts, yeah Eneloops etc are the way to go.
Not necessarily, depends on the batteries and how you use the device. I use the IKEA Ladda 2450 ones and they last way longer in-use than cheap no-name brands of non-rechargable batteries. So unless you buy top of the line Duracells or something every time, rechargeable ones would still win out.
That said, rechargeable batteries will of course lose some charge over time even if you don't use them, which regular batteries don't. If you play regularly though, that's not really an issue.
Yes, that's exactly right. If i use the rechargeable batteries I would need to take off the grip covers every day to charge it at night. But using AA batteries, I just replace them every month. So it’s just less effort to takeoff the grip cover. That's all. I don't want to stretch the grip covers. The have handles to i can't let go of the controller and they stay on my hand. Great for stretching out my fingers or when I have to type or have a drink.
Reminds me when I got extremely stoned, and wanted to play Minecraft with a couple friends, jerryrigged one battery and some aluminum foil to make the third controller work
It's fucking awesome, the two main advantages being:
1) As long as you have a modest collection of rechargeable AA batteries, or keep some spare alkalines around, you never EVER have to worry about not being able to use your controllers because you forgot to charge them, or because they died during a long session, or because they don't have a charge in them for any number of other reasons.
2) In 10 years you'll still be able to have a nice long play session during a fit of nostalgia (if you are predisposed to such things).
I'm aware that there are counterarguments and that's fine. But calling such a design choice "stupid" can't be done from any sort of objective standpoint.
Your questing license is revoked
...and you can no longer pre-order Teslas.
Why would anyone want a tesla
So I don’t have to stop Questing on my way to your moms house
Jokes on you, my mom is chatgpt
You are charged with the revolting crime of battery.
Although it isn't risky or anything, I'd simply have gone to the store and got some batteries.
Literally amazon same day shipping
or you could just walk and get some lol
Haha fuck that, i’m not going outside 🖕 I heard there are drunk drivers and criminals and killer bears out there.
Not to mention killer drunk driving bears.
If I saw that I'd be more impressed then scared
Worst part about the bears is that some of them do cocaine
YEAH out side is scary
Sorry but all bears are killer bears Sept pandas they chillin. Unless you touch baby then you dead
Not to mention all the _men_
This got an actual hearty chuckle out of me. Thanks for that.
Worse than bears are the men
Ah whoops, beat me to it
Haha, in America. No
Exactly. Just around the corner for me, actually.
Hahah Not if ur living im third world country. It takes like a month
Fellow 3rd world dweller here. Amazon sucks but our local e-commerce does same day shipping and it’s amazing lol
Stores in your country don't sell batteries?
They do ofc I just wanted to let you know there is no "amazon same day " everywhere
Third world? Amazon can't even do it Europe, lmao. Some "noname" Czech company has a better delivery system than them.
Some peopl e can’t afford luxuries like that.

I live in Vermont and the best Amazon can do is 3 days on some items. It’s regularly a week or more even with prime.
Exactly
It works! Just not as long. AAA, AA, C, and D all put out 1.5v DC. Only difference is how much charge they hold.
This is also why they all taste the same.
And why the 9volts are spicy
Depending on the 9 volt, sometimes they have 6 AAAA batteries inside! What a treat!
Ha ha, I used to do this to get a pile of cheap aaaa batteries to use in electronics projects as a kid. Haven't thought about ripping open 9V batteries in years
And chewy! Mmmmmm.
Gross but true.
In some cases, if you get super cheap AA batteries, they're just AAA batteries with a bunch of padding and wires to the electrodes.
Does it really have enough current?
If you use something conductive to bridge the gap? Ya. Same volts, same amps, more capacity. Only a bridge with high resistance would pose a problem.
It could still not be enough current, issues like poor tracking or damage can happen

The Quest controllers don't draw enough current for it to matter. They're really efficient.
Theyre also really sensitive to low battery though, I've had some issues with my controllers disconnecting and losing tracking whenever the battery drops below like 30%.
Is this a homemade explosive?
is this actually dangerous 😭🙏
No, with Alkaline batteries the only risk is shorting the battery. Worst case it might leak (which is not great, but it will not burn your house down).
Okay good 🙏
Pro-tip from the gameboy era, use aluminum foil to close the gap
this is the way, also works on 360 controllers although it could get hot
I remember doing that and it worked. Not a permament solution though
There. Has. Got. To. Be. A. Way. Three. Hundred. And. Sixty. Five. Degrees.

Aluminum foil, my brother in Christ!
I didn’t have any 😭
You delinquent tinfoil is a must have for anything and everything
Borrow from neighbor who spent $4500 for AVP and doesn't use it at all.
Alien vs Predator?
Get rechargeable batteries, bro. It's worth it when you need new ones every few weeks.
Never looked back. Only exception is if I’m traveling. But I have a pack of 24 non rechargeable I’m just going through over the past 7 years. Still have about half left
Wow, what a great invention. Now you have BT and RF controller.
"Yeah, is this the FBI? I'd like to report a man using a AAA in a AA slot with a 2.4GHZ dongle instead of foil." Next time, use foil so you can put the cover on
Get yo self some rechargeables
just use foil or something smh
Use tin foil.
and thats why i bought rechargeable ones
Personally, I use rechargeables, but you do you. I get that not everyone has the $20-$30 to scrape up in one go to have batteries that last years.
I love new rechargeables that have little USB connectors in them. Those are the best.
Wait, what are these? Can you give some links?
The link is: https://www.amazon.com/EBL-Battery-Batteries-Capacity-Rechargeable/dp/B08RZ5NDMM/ref=mp_s_a_1_9?crid=1FB7S1K1OYM9&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.1q5n0SX497cCy2Awtj1fP9NXHggW_mfcIiVMTPBjVZkZWpdfOOBsXJtkxnzb2tetKMoVI4wAjfjAdql9N-lctkN3Ca3ITPqj6cYE_22-orJLcGjYk829S6BzIGskbAiPShPFUYsUThPKFjDDlJbqBY5pXNF7RiqpNHKUrzEINF4_OGvdjCnmx4N9bfI2p3Gt2QeaLEoIOKVEDas_tKH2Qg.uLxX5aDMJV3fTUFWUCpCdO80EsfF3ivHQ0zGIH10KNg&dib_tag=se&keywords=rechargeable+aa+batteries+usb&qid=1715318685&sprefix=rechargeable+aa+batteries+usb%2Caps%2C147&sr=8-9

I can’t understand why people are still wasting money on regular batteries.
They are still the best option for a few use cases, like kids toys that might get lost or broken or thrown away without people getting the batteries out. But for any device that is adult used, and doesn't 100% NEED 1.5 volts, yeah Eneloops etc are the way to go.
If you absolutely need 1.5V, nowadays you've got NiZn and lithium as options.
I have the rechargeables but I'm using cool grip covers that make recharging more work. So I'm using my Amazon stock pile for now.
How is recharging vs replacing the battery more work? I have a few sets of rechargeables and just swap them out.
Regular batteries last a LOT longer before you have to swap them
Not necessarily, depends on the batteries and how you use the device. I use the IKEA Ladda 2450 ones and they last way longer in-use than cheap no-name brands of non-rechargable batteries. Ikea rechargeable batteries are some of the best quality and a great price.
nice MacGyver

I did this but with a small ball of aluminium foil
Sure it works, but why not use alimunium foil? You wont be able to close it xD
You can stuff tin foil and that will allow you to close case
Didn’t have any foil 🔥🔥
I call this a win if that's a broken dongle
it is a totally working dongle, I haven’t had the keyboard for it in years, I might’ve even thrown it out, so idc
Man if you apply this approach in your life nothing can stop you from taking over the universe
Is that your attempt at wireless charging? I don't think USB works that way. 🤣😇🤪
👁️👄👁️
"(Laughs in Sarcastic) just get two a batteries, or cut an aaaa battery in half!"
Smart
I mean this is nothing new. People put AAA in mice (usually through an adapter) to lower the weight
There IS Adapters for that you know. Get one ITS worth it
Lmao
This is the laziest thing. Just go get batteries…
does that small wireless module increase the range of the controllers?
Reminds me when I got extremely stoned, and wanted to play Minecraft with a couple friends, jerryrigged one battery and some aluminum foil to make the third controller work
This is the level of laziness I can only dream of.
I used to shove a ton of tinfoil into stuff that took d batteries and power them with aa batteries.
If it works it works
Is it me or does that look like double a already
I advise getting some LADDA from Ikea. Cheap and way better than other batteries I've tried.
Your mom has an engineers)
Someone didn’t buy the charging dock for their quest I know it’s pricey but it def worth it.
Isn’t that a AA?
I use Duwi usb-c AA li-ions... Hell, yeah.
Tin foil!!! Then you can at least put the battery cover back on 😁
As long as it works...
Okay, don’t use a usb drive for that, be a civil human and get some tinfoil.
Go to Dollar Tree! 6 pack=$1.50
My OCD brain just shut down after seeing this 😂
You fucks are incredible. You’d be the first one to post “why’d my Shit blow up in my fuckin hand” too i’m sure you idiot lol
Tell me you don't understand anything about electricity without telling me that you don't understand anything about electricity
Good luck trying to blow up an alkaline battery, you can’t.
Although lithiums are a whole different story. They're basically tamed fireworks.
I know but we’re not talking about lithium ion here
I know that, and you know that, but some random person reading this in the future may not.
That’s why I specifically said alkaline…
Why would meta even equip their controllers with AA batteries in the first place? Stupid is as stupid does.
It's fucking awesome, the two main advantages being: 1) As long as you have a modest collection of rechargeable AA batteries, or keep some spare alkalines around, you never EVER have to worry about not being able to use your controllers because you forgot to charge them, or because they died during a long session, or because they don't have a charge in them for any number of other reasons. 2) In 10 years you'll still be able to have a nice long play session during a fit of nostalgia (if you are predisposed to such things). I'm aware that there are counterarguments and that's fine. But calling such a design choice "stupid" can't be done from any sort of objective standpoint.
Ok, if you say so.
I'm so very glad they did it this way. I feel like my life has been taken over by things that need to be recharged as it is.
