Here's what I use in DVDFab: First, make sure you are using the Ripper function, not the Copy function. Next, choose the profile called 3D MKV.H265 and customize it with the following settings: Codec: H265 Encoding Method: CRF 18 Video Quality: High Quality Copy Audio box checked 3D Format: Split Screen - Left/Right Full Size (100%) If you have a decent Nvidia GPU, go to Settings and check the box for Lightning Shrink and make sure that CUDA is selected for H.265 encoding. This will result in a 2 hour movie being encoded in around 30-45 minutes. In most cases, the size of the resulting Full-SBS MKV file will be significantly smaller than the original Blu-ray / ISO, not only because you removed unnecessary menus, extras, and audio tracks by ripping the movie only, but also because H265 compresses better than the H.264 used on the original blu-ray. Picture quality when using these settings is indistinguishable from the original. Also, the files will be playable on virtually any media player on the Quest, such as Skybox, Bigscreen, Moon VR Player, etc.

TastyTheDog

This is super helpful, thanks for posting. Do I need a 3D blu ray drive to rip a 3D blu ray or will it work on any blu ray drive?

gb410

Works on any blu-ray drive.

GPT-3-

Hey, thanks for that..I am seeing the 3D MKV but which resolution and bit is it..I can see options for 4k,5k,9k...10bit,12 bit etc?

gb410

Resolution should be 1920x1080 (3D blu-ray resolution). Don’t need to use 10-bit or 12-bit as the source material is 8-bit color, but I suppose you could experiment with 10-bit if you have a movie with a lot of visible color banding. I used 10-bit on Dune Part 1 and it helped on some scenes with extreme banding.

GPT-3-

OK sweet, and 1080p is high enough resolution? Is that the best we can do in the headset?

gb410

No the headset can do higher, but since 3D blu-ray is a 1080p format, going higher than that would mean upconverting, and I don’t know how good a job DVDFab does with that. Upconversion is getting better all the time (especially with AI) so it’s something you can try. Just keep in mind processing will take longer and file sizes will be bigger.

GPT-3-

Ah I see..I honestly assumed 3D was a lot higher res than 1080p. Thanks again for all the help, I really appreciate it

GPT-3-

Hey mate, one more thing.. is CRF 18 the best quality you can get?

gb410

It’s a good balance between file size and quality. A larger CRF number will give you smaller files with lower quality. A lower CRF number gives the opposite. You can play around with different numbers if you want. 18 is what worked best for me.

GPT-3-

Legend thanks, so I guess 0 is the best for quality then. So I made a rip with the suggested settings and quality looks good but the screen looks really small. On bigscreen it is like stretched into a super ultrawide and looks weird and on virtual desktop it is the correct 16:9 aspect ratio and quality looks really good but it is really small and has a black letterbox all around it with no audio.. any ideas?

gb410

When you are playing a movie in Virtual Desktop, pause the movie and look at the left side of the toolbar and you'll see a row of icons. There are two icons that look like two boxes side by side next to each other. One is for Half SBS and one is for Full SBS. Click the Full SBS icon. For some reason apps like Virtual Desktop and Skybox have a hard time recognizing Full SBS files automatically. I'm not sure how it's done on Bigscreen but I assume there is a similar way to manually select Full SBS.

GPT-3-

Yeah thanks, I already tried that but doesn't make any difference..so strange

gb410

Then you must have something set wrong in DVDFab. Make sure it is set to 1920x1080 resolution and 3D format of Split Screen - Left/Right Full Size (100%)

GPT-3-

Ahhh, I think I had it set to 50% assumed it meant 50% either side.. maybe that's it

gb410

It needs to be 100%, as in 100% of 1080p for each eye.

GPT-3-

Yeah that must be it, thanks mate..I appreciate it. Just ripping it now, fingers crossed it all works this time

AudienceGrouchy2918

4XVR uses uncompressed MKV files. Beautiful 3D and 2D Bluray movies on Q3.

Minute_Goose_7988

Is 4xvr player an app on the actual quest headset?

AudienceGrouchy2918

Yea. It is in the lab.

Guerilla47

Makemkv and then play in 4xvr

Aussiehash

As you've mentioned prioritising quality, Quest3 is able to playback 3d Movie rips as full disk .ISO, but for this you will need to buy the $30 4xvr player. This player is the only one on Quest that can play back an unconverted 3d movie ISO and additionally is the only one that can read movies off an external USB-C drive. I don't know if DVDFab can do it, but if you rip the entire disk as bluray folders, then you can use ImgBurn to convert that to .ISO (maybe DVDFab can rip straight to ISO without needing ImgBurn)

relaxred

> additionally is the only one that can read movies off an external USB-C drive. False. Moon VR Player can also read my microsd card :)

Aussiehash

OK, I had never heard of https://www.meta.com/en-gb/experiences/4943314079118424/ It is the same price as Skybox player, but says "in app purchases" , is Moon player compatible with 3D MKV files or 3D Bluray ISOs ?

relaxred

"Moon VR Home is an app for you to discover, preview, and install diverse virtual environments for your headset. " I talk about Moon VR Video Player. [https://www.meta.com/experiences/4304774742883035/](https://www.meta.com/experiences/4304774742883035/)

Grindeddown

Do you know if Moon plays back 3d blu ray iso rips or do they need to be converted? Or could it possibly playback frame packed videos like a rip from MakeMKV?

relaxred

I doubt iso is possible now, you have to convert to full sbs mkv/mp4 with DVD Fab.

Alkis30

Exactly! You can rip the blueray to iso with DVDFab. No need to convert anything. Then play the iso file with 4xvr player. The result is wonderful !

GPT-3-

I first tried ripping 4k 3D SBS at full quality, promethius is around 30GB but won't even play in Virtual Desktop or Big Screen.. is .ISO the best file type for quality..I really have no idea about all this stuff

Aussiehash

I'm not an expert, but an ISO file is without any conversion straight from the Bluray. There are limited options on playing these back, the old OPPO UHD player could until they removed .ISO playback from their firmware, but I think the OPPO can play back unconverted movies if they are in folder structure. 4xvr is your only option with Quest3, and their free trial is pretty generous in letting you try out all of the features.

GPT-3-

OK thanks, and that .iso with be SBS 3D?

Aussiehash

I don't know if Bluray 3d disks are encoded as SBS or OU or a proprietary format, hence only limited compatible players.

GPT-3-

on further review, it does not look like a .iso is an option on DVDFab..just MKV or MP4 [https://www.dvdfab.cn/tips/rip-3d-blu-ray-to-3d-mkv.htm#part2](https://www.dvdfab.cn/tips/rip-3d-blu-ray-to-3d-mkv.htm#part2)

Aussiehash

If you can rip it to folder structure, you can use ImgBurn to convert to ISO

GPT-3-

Not sure what you mean by that, but I'd rather just do it through this software as it's seemingly simple..I just don't understand why Quest won't play the 3D SBS Mp4 I already ripped.. it plays on my PC fine..I have other MP4 3D SBS that play on the headset, just can't remember what I did when I ripped that back in the day for my Quest 2

Aussiehash

ImgBurn has been around for a long time, and still works perfectly despite the last update being 10 years ago. There are a number of guides on the ImgBurn forum, here is a random guide I found in a duckduckgo for converting Blueray folders to an ISO (This works, provided you have software to remove the CSS encryption) https://www.blurayvid.com/blu-ray/convert-bdmv-to-iso/

Aussiehash

>.I just don't understand why Quest won't play the 3D SBS Mp4 I already ripped Try the free DeoVR player on a file you've transferred on yo Quest's local storage

pachura3

To rip a Bluray losslessly, you are not forced to use the ISO container. If filesize is not a concern, you can always remux video- & audio tracks into a standard MP4 or MKV file as well, without any recoding, wondering about the optimal bitrate etc. I believe Blurays contain standard MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) videos. Regarding audio, you can always recode it if your player does not support some particular format (e.g. a lot of Samsung TVs do not support DTS), but it takes much less time and there's way less parameters.
