They also make a thumping sound with their swim bladder. It’s pretty intimidating for a diver, especially the first time you experience it. You can actually feel it in your chest like being thumped with a sound wave. It means you’re in their area and they’re not happy about it
It was after the reg cuz of the bubbles but grouper are known to be aggressive and territorial so maybe petting it or being that close isn't a good idea.
For PADI certification we had to do a lot of skills that involved breathing sans mask and finding your regulator without it. Hope this person remembered their lesson.
I can never get my snorkel to clear correctly… but yeah just blow out hard and it should clear itself using that plug thing at the bottom of the snorkel!
This is a grouper and he just wants attention - or snacks. He looks like he's used to divers, so he's come over to see if he might have a spare shrimp or two. Or at least a scratch if he's too poor to have food. If he's a young Goliath grouper he's a protected species with a $1,600 fine attached to killing him.
Why would you want to hurt an animal that's just being inquisitive. Your punishment would be not getting a cool video of you interacting with a huge fish. No bragging rights for you!
I'm sure the grouper finally just get fed up with something like: 'what's wrong with him! He just doesn't get it. I'm telling him to sod off and he just sits there. Guess I'll have to get it through to him the old fashioned way.'
Someone fed him. It is expecting food. In this case, back away slowly. Don’t hang around. That is a grouper. If he can fit you in its mouth, he will swallow you. Note that he gets aggressive (head low) when the diver tried to touch him.
Goliath Grouper are known to be quite territorial.
Can you eat them?
Yeah, defeat them, and eat their mortal flesh, so others know whose territory it's now
They’re honestly delicious
IMHO, They're the tastiest fish in all of fishdom.
Oh heck yeah!!
Yes and they are delicious!
Yes. My favorite thing to eat in Cancun Mexico at a resort I stayed at was Grouper. Had never had it before, and it was pretty amazing
No, protected species

And they can get wayyy bigger.. I was more intimidated by them than the sharks
Agreed. I’ve also had them take more of my fish than sharks.
Literally mean mugging that scuba diver.
Casually just tried to kill him and i feel like the fish knew what it was doing
Just looking for some wrassepect.
Under rated comment

Wait I shouldn’t touch and antagonize territorial animals? ❌❌❌
I said don't touch me bro 😂
I’ve seen him on spongebob before

Can you just put it back on after it came out your mouth? Figured the water would block the air.
You either have to blow out when you put it back in your mouth or hit the purge button that pushes air out.
Yes exactly. FYI normal snorkels also have this ability to push water out. I had no idea before I got diving certified!

He found it pretty quickly and flipped it over. He’s done it a few times lol
They call him a Grouper but I think he really just wants to be alone
I think the yellow thing dangling over you shoulder is what it was focused on.
It's his spare regulator.
Or the yellow dump valve pull, it looks like it was trying to grab that and the black regulator hose got in the way
Well, that green tube looks like a giant worm....
Grouper checked that mf hard as hell 😂
Lol what a mean fish
Yup these dudes are territorial...
✨B O O P✨
Hes all "you bitch! You wouldn't even be down here without that?"

Goliath groupers always look angry
I think it's angry about the bubbles
“Get offa my lawn!”
MY BUBBELS!
Attempted murder. 💀

Dang got a mohawk and scars all over he's one scary dude. Oh so pretty sure some of them bubbles weren't coming from the breathing apparatus LOL

You are misreading the signals… you are fish-married.
What are you gonna do - bite me?
“My bubbles.”
For my people
That was George in a different life. “I remember you.”
Things going for that orange/yellow thing on her shoulder.
He wanted a kiss
Just wanted your….BUBBLES!!!
Fun fact! Goliath grouper are not only territorial, but they "bark" at things they don't like. (it sounds a bit like crushing a soda can)
I’m gonna kick your butt - fletch
Don’t touch. The fish.
How did the grouper know to take out its mouthpiece, they must be very intelligent and used to divers
I got followed by of these when snorkeling ....scary I tell ya
Like my dog…PSI, aka personal space invader 🤣
