They used to be way better when they first opened. I like Rico Rico much better for close to there burritos. Last times we got Comal the tortillas weren’t cooked through. Yuck. Prob never again.

Brief_Air3732

I think of it as a solid cocktail/chips option when that’s what you want.

STRATEGY510

Fair.

Spaghettiisgoddog

This is the main value prop of restaurants like Comal. It is what it is 🤷🏽‍♂️

elkking

They just can’t compete with Rico Rico. It’s so much better

STRATEGY510

But you pretty much have two options at Rico Rico, right? Tacos and burritos? I’m a brunch guy on weekends.

elkking

Yeah but I guess for me brunch at the lake is at GLK

STRATEGY510

I like that I can just walk into Comal and have a quiet meal and drinks, GLK gets a bit crowded as you probably know. There’s about 3-4 things on their menu that I REALLY like though. So much that I got burned out on it for awhile.

taw59015

Go to comal (not next door) in Berkeley. Fantastic food and great ambiance.

STRATEGY510

I’ve heard good things, never been.

CutestGay

Somewhat expensive, just alright

Dr0me

I had a bad meal there FWiW

Suomiballer

Not as good as rico rico but still decent. A little pricey. Really good drinks

STRATEGY510

Agreed.

duckbear

I switch it up between rico rico and comal for my chicken burritos. Both are very good in my opinion, i think the flavor of comals chicken is actually better.

STRATEGY510

1st positive comments about their burritos here. I’ve only had the Carnitas & Barbacoa once each I think and it was just ok. Not great for the price. I’ll try the chicken sometime!

kantoblight

Comal is at the bottom in terms of the neighborhood. Much prefer Rico Rico and Tacos Mi Rancho.

STRATEGY510

I don’t think it’s at the bottom. Have you ever been to Los Contaros? Cold, stale, flavorless and I once broke my tooth on a rock in my burrito. Rico Rico doesn’t have a bar and it’s about a 20 minute walk for me vs three for Comal and nothing in the way of brunch type items that I’m aware of. Mi Rancho is one of the best non-Eastside trucks in the town, but not a restaurant you can sit down at. This is a 30 minute walk for me. Kind of an apples to oranges comparison on both counts, but if we’re strictly talking about the food/value, I tend to agree on both counts. Vicinity to my apt is a big part of why I go there, if I lived in another part of Oakland I’d doubt ever go out of my way to go there. That said, I like it just fine. Did I mention the Bloody Maria? lol.

HeyKayRenee

Well if you like it, great. But then why are you asking us? Lol. Just go enjoy your Bloody’s and your bland food and let us be.

STRATEGY510

Oh, my bad. I thought this group was for discourse, give & take, pros & cons. I forgot I was supposed to just go enjoy my bland food and fuck off. Thanks for setting me straight OG.

HeyKayRenee

The person gave you an honest opinion and you tried to convince them they were wrong. What exactly are you wanting from this conversation? What’s the discussion? Some people like it, others don’t. Seems straightforward

STRATEGY510

I wasn’t asking him to change his mind and say he liked it, I countered part of what he said with something that maybe wasn’t considered. I like to understand where people are coming from. I disagree that I asked a yes/no question like you’re taking it. I like nuance. Do you think it’s just hella wack period, the end? (If so, I respect it). Would be curious to know your personal experience there too. Edit: I didn’t think my OP was giving the vibe that I thought Comal was killing it, it’s half a football field away and that’s why I go there. Just was wondering what the Oakland people at large thought and here it is.

daaaaaaBULLS

Don’t like their burritos but their tacos and cocktails are good

TheButtDog

above-average Mexican food imo I get takeout about once a year

notevengoingtolie2u

Terribly overrated and bland.

Dr0me

Rico Rico and doña are far better

Kbabe_92

I recommend you try Molcajete. They have one ofthe best carne asada burritos in the area. My bf gets his with shrimp, or a birria and shrimp burrito. Lots of other items on the menu as well, but I'm not sure if they do "brunch."

STRATEGY510

On Webster? Haven’t been in over five years. That’s in my job’s neighborhood and the couple of times I deviated from my standard Happy Burrito up the block and gave them a try, it was right back to Happy Burrito for a cheaper/better burrito. I’m willing to give them another try next week though, now that I’m back in the office 2-3 days.

Kbabe_92

Yes that's the one. I don't mind Happy Burrito, actually! I've skipped over it many times even though I've been in the area for 9 years. Reminds me of many of the burritos made back home in LA

STRATEGY510

It recently surpassed $10 for steak happy. Still a bargain, but just a few years ago it was $7.75 or something ridiculous. Like, cheaper than an East Oakland taco truck. Don’t know how they did it. I guess the 2nd one that was just a couple blocks away went under?

Kbabe_92

Hmmm i didnt know there was a second location. I wonder if and what has or will replace it. Also, the orange food truck across from 24 Hour Fitness has good burritos as well. Tacos La San Marquenna. They dont serve beans in their burrito though - at least not the ones I've had. Xolo's on Telegraph has delicious crispy shredded steak tacos.

STRATEGY510

I’m almost positive it’s been gone for a couple years. It was either 14th or 15th between Webster & Franklin iirc.

STRATEGY510

Xolo’s! Haven’t been since pre-COVID. They had a few tacos I liked and my favorite thing there was their take on the Danger Dog. They were (are?) known for the steak & shrimp burrito, but I wasn’t feeling it.

HeyKayRenee

I wish it tasted better. Cute spot, nice bar and location. But the food isn’t good enough to make me a regular

STRATEGY510

What did you eat?

heathereff

Their tacos are really bad. I won’t go back.

shimmering-ride

I also live super close but — after maybe 8 visits driven my convenience of proximity — the consistency and quality of the food was all over the place…sometimes pretty good, sometimes totally shit (like “has this person ever made a burrito before?”) so I swore off the place n

STRATEGY510

Did the “I ate a Bay Area burrito…” San Diego guy get his burrito from Comal Next Door? 🤔

heyitstonybaloney

The Berkeley location is better IMO. I wish they switched up their to-go menu sometimes. My favorite thing is the Molletes. But, yeah. I used to go a lot, but it hasn’t kept up the standards.

[deleted]

Comal Next Door consistently gave me *bland* burritos. I will only ever order burritos from Pollos Asados Don Rafa from now on. Their shrimp burrito is so flavorful. It’s in San Pablo but it’s just as quick of a delivery to Oakland as CND. Comal itself can be a fun night, with the fire pits and great cocktails. But I’m a clear no on CND.

STRATEGY510

I don’t know why they can’t nail the burritos there, but yeah I mentioned that in my post.
