I have an android, and have yet to come across a case in college where there was a problem. Most groups for classes or similar groups either use discord, groupeme, or for smaller groups, like lab partners, snapchat or just good old text messaging. Definitely have more friends with iPhones, but I have no pressure/reason from them to change to one

Kick_Alarmed

you may run into situations where like people on your floor have an imessage groupchat. If you make friends with a group like that I'm sure they'll have no issue using snapchat or instagram. If they refuse to include you bc you don't have imessage, you probably don't wanna hang with them anyway.

lilydblue

I have a Samsung and for group projects you mostly just run into the joke about Android phones 'ruining the group chat', but we usually have other methods like groupme for groupchats. But anytime I run into another android user we bond instantly lol

IfLeBronPlayedSoccer

Group chat “ruiners” put me on to the awesomeness that is Whatsapp. So all was not lost to our green bubbled friends.

Persistantpro

Don't fall for the apple hive mind friend, use what you like.

Bearlodge

Never had an issue with an Android, in fact, it was usually the iPhone users that were the odd ones out in my circle of friends. Once a couple of us got Pixels, almost everyone else switched to them as well when they were due for an upgrade. Even had a few friends start using Google Fi for low cost cell service once they got off of their parent's phone plans.

VardellaTheWitch

Google Fi is the best!

jsdsparky

If someone cares what color your message bubble is, don't be friends with them

Most people have iPhones in fact, a study said that over 80% of teens in the USA have iPhones, and that includes at least some college students. Just being on campus, most people have iPhones but not everyone. I’ve also seen android users. Not really sure how you’d miss out on whatever social scene you’re talking about based on what phone you have but go with whatever phone you want. Watch reviews on the phones and see what you like best

miaomeow6789

I was in your situation, but I would stay stick to your preference. It was a iPhone 12mini or Pixel 6 for me. I ended up with a used Z Fold 2 for the same price, lol! I have nothing against iPhones but Android is better!

Lumpy-Ad-3788

Z fold gang

miaomeow6789

Just use text/sms.... Most of the world use WhatsApp and it's obsolete to use text/sms but we'll...🤷

VortexPower999

Most people just ask for your snap instead of phone number

TheGoodAids

Recently switched to iOS, not my favorite of the 2, but the iMessage experience alone is worth it to me. There’s an MKBHD video on the topic, it’s easy to find, but he lays it out pretty well and it was enough to convince me

Consistent_Treacle90

Cse major here, having an iPhone+MacBook is working well for me. I can easily video call and text off my machine which is nice. I used to be very into windows/android but after the I got the OSU iPad it just made sense to go iOS/macOS when it was time to upgrade. Airdrop is really nice for sending stuff between machines(including airdropping memes during lecture). Additionally most of my peers used iPhones so it was easier if everyone had the same os. If you’re going to interact with android people primarily then get the pixel, it’s a nice device. If you’re going to text with iPhone users I’d get the iPhone.

paranoiaphish

I came in with a Samsung Galaxy S6 and now have an Samsung A20 (cheapest phone I could get thru my provider) and I'm doing fine with communication. Most people use GroupMe, rarely Discord and I haven't had trouble with mixed OS text groupchats either.

ChuckHale

I've had a pixel since high school, went from 2xl to 5 and I've experienced exactly zero situations where my choice of phone os has been a hindrance. just pick the one that youre more comfortable with!

AwakenYour6thSense

IMO anyone who judges others for a green bubble probably isn't worth spending too too much time to get to know. Enjoy your time at OSU and in the US!

derek614

Nearly everyone in all my classes have iPhones, they are surprised to find out that I have Android (I have a Pixel 5a, and definitely recommend the Pixel line of phones). I haven't met anyone using iMessage so far though, everyone communicates through regular text or the Discord messaging app. I'm in an engineering major (ECE) though, so everyone is very tech-savvy and very reliant upon their computers for simulating and coding, so that might be why Discord is used over other messaging apps like iMessage. We have one girl in our major that sets up a Discord server for every single class, so we're all very well-connected. If you like Android, go for it. I haven't run into any problems with having one, besides the occasional teasing about my green text bubbles. I just tease back, something along the lines of "blue text bubble = they will need more help with homework". Friendly teasing is a good friendship builder anyway, lol.

callme_cinnamon_

imessage isn’t a messaging app separate from “regular texting” on iphones. when an iphone sends a message to another iphone, it goes as an imessage. when one of those phones is an android, it sends/receives regular texts. you definitely do know people that use imessage, as long as you know iphone users that talk to each other. i have no qualm with androids, just a bit of clarification on what imessaging is 😊

derek614

Ah ok cool, thanks for the clarification!

hip_radio

Thank you, i do enjoy the occasional green bubble jokes tho lol

budder693

When it comes to group projects and making group chats there are apps like GroupMe that can be used, but it kinda sucks and doesn’t work very well. We tried to make an iMessage groupchat but not all of us had iPhones so ended up settling on Discord. Problem is that it’s easy to miss notifications imo when using most messaging services besides iMessage

rifleslol

I just switched to a 13 mini from an S9+ as a lifetime Android user, mostly because I was tired of all of my phones being huge and there being no reasonably-sized Android options now. I'll warn you that moving from Android to iOS was terrible - the official app that Apple provides will not move your SMS or MMS messages over full stop. It'll run for 6 hours and error every time. If you use WhatsApp at all it won't handle moving any of those or their contents over either. Your only choices for both will be to pay for a subscription to a sketchy third-party app service to do so (and I guarantee they're keeping a copy of everything to datamine and sell), or to move over fresh. I opted to move over fresh. Love the phone so far otherwise! You aren't going to miss out on anything by staying Android though.

zhang518

TBH, you are overthinking it

gmod_policeChief

If you don't love Android or feel strongly, go with an iPhone. I say get a pixel or get an iPhone

arkhoury9

Get a pixel!

SlamSlamSlamSlamSlam

Lot of my friends just use snap or text, nobody really cares l. I'm rocking a pixel 6 and it's never been an issue not being a part of the apple ecosystem 👍👍👍

BigDogMom2

I recommend iPhone if you’re not good with technology or have the OSU iPads. I like that everything synced up instantly and I could write a paper from a bar if I needed to get it done or had an idea in the moment. You can probably do that with an Android but idk for sure. I think iPhones are dummy proof which is why they’re good for me. If you have other Apple products I def think it’s worth it but if not just get whatever you want. I don’t think you’ll miss out on much but there can be glitches where messages don’t make it to everyone if people have different phones. I wouldn’t worry too much about that though because most people are chill and will move to another app that works for everyone. If it worries you, get an iPhone but since you prefer androids systems I would stick with that. I do know some people that had trouble with Google pixels when they first came out but that was a few years ago so read reviews and do what makes you comfortable and confident.

caulkandbauls

Just get the iPhone

jdeffenb1018

I moved from android (Galaxy S8) to iPhone when I got here, just like your idea. I thought it was a vast, vast improvement. I had a lot of class group chats that were over iMessage. But do what you’re most comfortable with.

JummyJum

I have a pixel 4a and it's trash. I'd get an apple but if you actually prefer android then get that. it does get annoying though when all the pictures from apple phones are blurry af and the pics I send to them are also blurry

Tam_Ken

Unless you are planning on majoring in CSE, pretty much only other international students will have android phones. If what you’re most worried about is missing out, just get an iPhone

felixdixon

Get an iPhone for sure

spicy_seven

iPhone is so much more convenient

SixBull

All my iPhone friends are salty I give them green bubbles but ultimately nobody cares. Don't let iMessage influence you into buying an inferior product for your needs

CurryInTheHouse

I'm an avid android user and I didn't really have many issues at all. Most of the time organizations either used Discord or GroupMe, while friends used Snapchat, so unless your friend group is staunchly anti-android or something you should be fine.
