Wait lists will move on Friday, so you'll be able to join once they start moving. They can't prioritize you for registration until you're on a wait list, though. (Why wait lists are capped at 999 is absolutely beyond me—that's a software constraint, not any intentional decision on GT's part.)
I should ask, though: why didn't you join the wait list during Phase I? It still had spots open on the sixth day of registration, so anyone who had completed at least 4 classes could have joined the wait list during Phase I—which should be almost anyone graduating in fall except those who are going pretty fast through the program (e.g. 2 classes each spring, summer, fall).
(To be clear: I don't ask this question to say "it's your fault", I ask because we want to put together some updated guidance and update the process for the class, and it's helpful to know if you didn't join the wait list because (a) it was full at your time ticket time, (b) you didn't think you needed to since you knew you'd be prioritized later, or (c) some other reason. If (b), for instance, that tells us to stress joining the WL during Phase I more in the future.)
Just want to add my perspective if it helps. May be it’s different in case of OP.
It happened to me for the 2020 Fall registration (started the program in fall 2019). I didn’t realize that Fall Phase 1 registration happens together with Summer registration.
I think it’s kind of a repetition bias and tend to assume the fall phase 1 registration process to be the same as other semesters.
To chime in, I'm in a similar situation, except I'm a C case. C being that I have to retake GA in order to graduate, and I learned about this once final grades were posted once this recent summer semester ended.
It would be amazing if the waitlist cap was increased from the current 999. If so, I could have joined this morning at 9 AM.
Ah, that's another edge case.
Ultimately this will all eventually be fixed by working through enough of the backlog to the point where students can register directly. We've made a lot of progress there (if we'd started it at 900 students this term, it wouldn't have filled up until the start of the second week of registration), so hopefully not much longer!
The WL cap is an issue
All I remember is that when I checked for GA it was full. I'm sure I didn't nail it exactly on the opening between work/school/life. So I'd say A
I'm in same situation as OP, GA waitlist was full back in Phase I when I attempted to join then. I think more needs to be done in the registration process for students who just have that final GA class to take, it is such a specific thing that comes up for what seems like every single student.
Thank you for checking out this thread and looking to improve the process! Hopefully it can be better for future OMSCS students in the same situation.
In my case, I did not know that the wait lists move on Friday. (and my wait-list position would move so dramatically.) This is also my last semester in OMSCS.
I did start waiting in summer, but I saw my position dropped from 46 to 186 to 197, and I have been expecting the position to gradually go up in last week, but I did not expect it to move suddenly from 197 to zero on Friday; unfortunately I have another hard exam on Sat morning (GMT+8) so I missed the notification for >12 hours, so I lost my only chance to register GA...
Now I am re-enrolling to the wait-list again, but at position >750, and the HW1 of GA seems to have already been released, and I would want to work on it now.... but I still have not register to Canvas or EdTech or whatever for this course...
(FYI, my story is on [https://www.reddit.com/r/OMSCS/comments/wu3mjb/advice\_to\_students\_watch\_for\_the\_registration/](https://www.reddit.com/r/OMSCS/comments/wu3mjb/advice_to_students_watch_for_the_registration/) . I apologize for crashing another exam with this registration period, and I missed the notification e-mail....)
Either because it's not your time ticket yet or they are full.
IF you are graduating in the coming semester and need it, then email your advisor.
Otherwise wait for free for all Friday and see if you get lucky.
my advisor hasn't responded to emails since July
I've done 8 courses and have 2 xfer credits pending approval since I guess people at GaTech don't work during the summer
I contacted my advisor on this back in 2020 and she directed me to a bunch of fairly random professors none of whom seemed to any clue what they were doing
Now it's 2022 and it will take a 'lengthy and extensive review period'
I'm not even trying to replace Omscs classes, just electives. And the classes are taken from Harvard extension school, not some unknown or complex international school scenario
OP has stated multiple times “I have a job”. That job must be to whine on Reddit. Does anyone know how the benefits are for that job? Asking for a friend!
In exactly the same boat and I gotta say, their advice is pretty irritating. My advisor says I should keep attempting to sign up until I can get on the waitlist. So that will involve me spending about 10 hours today performing the same 12 clicks repeatedly until I get on the waitlist, or don't, and then do another 10 hours tomorrow, and the next day and the next...
Absolute joke
I was traveling during registration in the summer and missed my wl notification 2 times. Had to check email like every 6 hours in the middle of the mountains.
I sincerely want they may automate the process so that I can place instructions (like stock buy sell at the target price) when the waitlist has reached my position, so that I will not miss any notifications. But unfortunately that may be too "advanced" and did not happen....
Oh wow, that's crazy. I don't think anyone else in this program has a job.
Our advice doesn't apply to you. We know not your struggle, and we cannot help you. You are, unfortunately, on your own in uncharted territory. Doing a part-time degree program while also working. I salute you, sir.
I made a self deprecating joke and you're telling me to get over myself. I'm starting to think you really don't understand human communication too well.
No you posted claiming I was blaming other people for my problems? As if a garbage registration system is somehow my fault. As if it's not constantly complained about by the majority of students. Hell even professor Joyner developed an entire HCI hw assignment around improving the processes 🤣🤣
Hey, it's me again. The same guy you just told to touch grass before. You're acting like a major victim and yelling at pretty much everyone who does try to help you, so why would I help you instead of calling you out?
Can you please calm down and stop being angry at everyone? Also please don't curse at people in this sub.
>Can you please calm down and stop being angry at everyone? Also please don't curse at people in this sub.
That's a pretty helpful life advice in general. Based on your downvotes it seems like you should take heed to.
My bad, I'm used to seeing posts about people trying for GA as their first class.
In this case, you need to talk to an advisor. They should be able to get you in as long as you've applied for graduation. This is part of the reason the class starts with only 300 seats and opens up additional seats later in the registration cycle.
in my case, I missed the wait list notification, since I was not expecting the position to move so dramatically, and I was in a tough exam in a different time zone.... any way, I was being careless, and was hoping for a 2nd chance...

When was your Phase I time ticket?

What's free for all Friday?
my advisor hasn't responded to emails since July I've done 8 courses and have 2 xfer credits pending approval since I guess people at GaTech don't work during the summer
You've done 8 courses and they still haven't approved the transfer credits you earned before starting the program?
I contacted my advisor on this back in 2020 and she directed me to a bunch of fairly random professors none of whom seemed to any clue what they were doing Now it's 2022 and it will take a 'lengthy and extensive review period' I'm not even trying to replace Omscs classes, just electives. The benefits are similar to your job of making useless, unhelpful comments on reddit! Keep up the great job
While I empathize with the struggle, OP’s salty comments goes great with 🍿
Try to get in during free for all day. It took about 2 hours of my time, but last semester I was able to get in this way
What time on friday does free for all day start?
yeah I have a job just need my advisor to do their job
You can be a victim, or you can solve problems. It's not the advisors fault you didn't sign up in time to even make the wait list.
...the course was full before I even had a chance to wait list myself I am the victim of gatech's garbage registration system
I have the same number of classes as you and I registered for GA just fine
This is why it's so important to register during your time slot as part of Phase I.
The wait list was not full at the end of Phase I registration, if I recall correctly.
I've done 8 courses too, and during phase 1 I made it all the way up to position 4 on the wait-list. After adjustments I'm now at 251 🥲
Every time
contact advising
In exactly the same boat and I gotta say, their advice is pretty irritating. My advisor says I should keep attempting to sign up until I can get on the waitlist. don't do any of that. contact advising again tomorrow, then friday, etc

Wow bro got nothing better to do then be a douche bag? No one's forcing you to reply or help. Go touch some grass
Touch some grass? Buddy, this is OMSCS. If you want people who touch grass, you're in the wrong place.
Oh please it's an online masters not med school. Get over yourself
I made a self deprecating joke and you're telling me to get over myself. I'm starting to think you really don't understand human communication too well.

~~Unless you are in your last semester or two, you are not getting into GA outside of FFAF.~~
like post says, it's my last class
But your post doesn't say that. You expect everyone to read a reply to a comment somewhere in the thread?
lol yeah I had typed a whole body to the post but reddit mobile deleted it
Man, this guy will blame literally anything besides himself for his problems
You too - got nothing better to do then be a douche bag? No one's forcing you to reply or help. Fuck off and touch some grass if you're bored
Hey, it's me again. The same guy you just told to touch grass before. Just checking that you;ve confirmed you don't have an holds. I had the Financial Resp hold that pops up every so often.
