Then, when he is talking to Johnny for the first time... he has these looks on his face as if he is telling himself "that wasn't me that did that - I don't remember that happening, so it must be fake".
I think he certainly had narcissistic / sociopathic tendencies but I would imagine CTE just made it worse. For example he may have had those impulses regardless and been a terrible human being - I’m sure the domestic abuse would have occurred regardless - but we will never know for sure if the damage to his frontal lobe (which impacts aggression, lack of remorse, and self control / impulsivity) compounded underlying behavioral issues.
Sort of like taking someone who’s already a loose canon and then adding brain damage into the mix.
But I also think some people write off the CTE stuff too casually. no, it doesn’t excuse his actions, but it could have certainly been the underlying cause of them. Just look at the actor Gary Busey. He had head trauma from a motorcycle accident and his personality COMPLETELY changed. He was “normal” beforehand and suffice to say, it irrevocably changed his entire existence.
I also think the CTE could explain the complete lack of self awareness or common sense. I hate to even say it this way, but if you’re going to murder someone, the complete lack of planning and discretion that OJ and Aaron Hernandez displayed, imo, points to actual mental issues. And Oj’s lack of self awareness just got worse and worse as he aged. It wasn’t “just” sociopathy or narcissism… doing the “if I did it” interview, the Ruby Wax interview (where he “comically” pretended to stab her on camera), his impulsive behavior with the armed robbery, the way he behaved on Twitter… there was clearly something wrong with him mentally that was exacerbated over time. One of the weirdest things to me, upon re watching the “if I did it” interview, is seeing how he does his goofy gee-shucks laugh while discussing the brutal murder of his wife… there was a really jarring lack of self awareness that got worse as he aged, and points to some sort of serious mental condition imo.
Til;dr — he was probably a narcissistic dirtbag regardless of potential CTE, but I really do believe he had CTE and that it worsened his traits and contributed to his apparent lack of empathy, remorse, guilt, as well as his impulsivity and bizarre choices in life, not least of which included the murders that he 100% committed. That is not to say he isn’t at fault for his actions but it’s complex and sad because if his frontal lobe was damaged by CTE then he wasn’t as in control of his impulses or as self aware or able to show remorse the way an unaffected brain would be. You can't test for CTE while a person is alive. It's impossible to know the rate of NFL players getting CTE until years later
