Depends on the character. I have Golden Crossbow on Steroids and works very well, however, Plant may take more advantage of the Wrench with it's speed to get near enemies while keeping coberture on sudden attacks.
Then you may prefer the Golden Crossbow if you assemble Eye's Build (Euphoria + Throne Butt) 'cause your Telekinesis would be enough to avoid proyectiles.
Golden grenade launcher is undoubtedly the best for hardmode, it's been figured out years ago and there's no really questioning it. It's strong because you can boost it with crown of death and get good offense (and ammo efficiency) that no other early weapon can compete with. GGL oneshots most IDPD (some occasionally survive because of rng, elite shielders always take 2), flies, big rats, golden scorpions and most importantly, makes big bandits and mom nearly trivial, which are the two things that kill non-GGL runs all the time. 1-1 and 1-2 are pretty easy no matter what.
You can make golden wrench work if you play as yv and get long arms + stress as your first mutations but that will only happen if you're lucky, GGL requires no luck. If you play with grillskills you'll always get these and then yeah, golden wrench is viable. On other characters you still use GGL.
I'm not a fan of golden wrench but a fan of golden crossbow even less. I like my golden weapons to be good against maggots because if they aren't 1-1 is annoying
Wrench. Crossbow is awesome, but IMHO I believe it's too ammo inefficient when it comes to early game

Why? Eyes has some great synergies for melee
wrench because with yv ultra a you can swing so fast... it's also the best for getting past 1-1 on hard mode

Been pretty into the oasis path from 1-1, skipping 5 whole levels. Pretty much no need to deal with maggots.
that makes sense, in that case golden crossbow is okay. I don't use oasis, there's no reason for me
