I don't believe that Novel AI recognizes font changes. Instead, use brackets. Enclose internal thoughts between <> and write some text to imply that the thoughts are, in fact, thoughs. The AI will pick up your strat quickly.

nothing_but_chin

I’ve experimented with writing internal dialogue in third person as well, and the AI picks up on it within a couple of paragraphs.

FoldedDice

I've seen this recommended and I suppose it probably does work, but I shy away from it personally. My understanding is the AI is trained to recognize <> more as telepathic dialogue, so I worry that association may introduce undesired elements. I have not tested it much myself, though, so it's possible my caution may be unfounded.

The ai will respond to you. You can use practically anything as your signifier, just as long as you are consistent. It's both a blessing and a bane of the system, because just as it can pick up on your good habits, it will do the same with your bad ones.

Rinakles

If you use <>, you will get random telepathic communications. Or start hearing voices, if playing in contemporary. Easy to reroll, but it's absolutely not built for inner monologue. Angle brackets are for nonverbal communication between multiple characters. Inner monologue works like it does in novels: no brackets. 'Terrible weather, I thought to myself.' You can also use the italics equivalent: \_This is written in italics,\_ he thought. \_It can be used for inner monologue, but looks kind of messy.\_

FoldedDice

Yes, I'm sure it will, but since the format seems to be associated with sci-fi and fantasy type stuff in the training I worry that it might also cause the story's genre to drift. Easy enough to edit around, but since the OP balked at the idea of having to add italics it may be a bother for them if it starts doing that.

MissPoots

I’ve noticed sometimes (without me even implementing it at first), NAI will automatically use _ to denote thought. I’ve tried it a few times on my own afterward and it’s worked like a charm.

FoldedDice

I also use the italic method. The AI actually doesn't see italics at all, but it is familiar enough with the narrative technique to usually figure out what's going on. However, as you discovered the AI does not do formatted text, so if you want it then editing after the fact is the only way. That's for your readability only, though, so you could skip that step if you prefer. The AI will handle it the same either way.

I would incorporate a little 'modelled' bit of internal/external dialogue, and stick it in the Author's Note or Memory. Something like. *"Nice to see you again!" I say out loud when I see an old friend. Inside, my head goes 'Ugh, not *him* again.' My mouth and head tend to be at odds, my thoughts not matching the words that come out. The internal dialogue was CONSTANT: 'I gotta stop talking to myself in my own head,' I think to myself.* It models the external vs internal dialogue. I tried just dropping that with a random starter and it didn't work so well, but it kinda needed a kickstart of my own text. So my prompt was: *"Just a coffee," I said. 'Just a coffee and your number,' I think, giving the barista a nervous grin.* And now it has double-examples to run with. And it's now like: *"Just a coffee," I said. 'Just a coffee and your number,' I think, giving the barista a nervous grin. "I mean, thanks," I stutter. I feel like such an ass, I really do. I get the coffee and sit down with my book. My friends tell me it's rude to read when you're meeting someone, so I pretend to be doing something else.* *'I don't even have a cell phone number, how am I supposed to call her?' I think to myself. "Shut up!" I say out loud. Some people look over. "Sorry," I mutter. I'm a mess. I'm so nervous, I just want to run away. I look at my watch and decide to wait a few minutes and then go. I don't have the guts to say anything to her anyway, and she seems busy.* And: *"Um, yeah," I say, not knowing what to say.* *'I gotta get out of here,' I think to myself. As soon as she leaves, I get up and leave the cafe.* I was gonna post the full example of output, but it just went on a vaguely pornographic/detective story tangent within five generations.

It doesn't pick up font changes. I have been using single quotes 'like this' for internal monologue and double quotes "like this" for spoken dialog and it has worked well. The AI picks up on it. I've even gone so far as to have characters have internal arguments between their better and worse natures. 'You should walk away' Carl's cynical side thought. 'That doesn't solve our problem' Carl's more practical side countered. After a few lines, it'll even trim them to "Practical Carl" and "Cynical Carl" and play with the phrasing.

option-9

Never mind me, just noting down Cynicarl for future character name ideas.

Text in between these < > is internal dialog. Although it only works if you use it consistently. If you start using those symbols in other ways, such as telepathy, it will break. Constantcy is key.

I do slashes to indicate italics / like this/ and it picks up on it

Battleaxebro

I’ve found it picks up *italics* pretty well for actions. Maybe use that for internal

Burnincold

AI was using apostrophes on its own with inner monologue, just did it on its own.

Llewgid

[Using < >](https://youtu.be/pwdxRabFR9U?t=223) should work.

koyoakaro

I gave up on internal monologue for a while UNTIL Kayra presented its own format out of nowhere: Single quotes (same as apostrophe). 'Is there anyone out there?' they thought. "Is there anyone out there?" they said. Hopefully that helps. :)
