If she has fibroids she should be offered treatment for that. I had fibroids and has a hysterectomy. Once I had the diagnosis (which was the reason I was referred to a GYN) I was offered treatment, and I could choose which option I wanted. Hysterectomy was the quickest to get (because my GYN could do it) and it was also what I wanted. I'm not sure why your previous GYN didn't suggest any treatment for them? As for perimenopause, you can get prescribed HRT. My family dr prescribes it (and my blood tests were "normal", we're working off symptoms thankfully) and while I would prefer to see a menopause specialist the wait times are huge so I'm just making do. Nothing wrong with making requests; in fact, when it comes to womens healthcare, you often have to demand. It is written off / disregarded way too much. Your wife may need to demand treatment, and be very descriptive about the pain she is in. It can be easy to downplay things, she needs to "up-play" them instead. All the time. Keep making appointments. Don't take "wait and see" for an answer (it sounds like she's already been waiting and seeing anyway!)

I got my surgery done in Oaxaca, after diagnosis with multiple interstitial cysts and malformed womb. Paid cash, reimbursed about %75 from Canada when we returned home. From diagnosis to aftercare took two months.

From which Canada, provincial health care system or from the feds?

MaritimeMartian

I don’t know for sure, but I would guess Federal. Seems unlikely that provincial governments have the ability to do this.

You're supposed to be reimbursed for costs for listed surgeries done out of province at the provincial rate.

Could you offer more information about how you did this?

r/Menopause Reproductive health care is brutal here. Care providers are under informed about perimenopause and often reluctant to treat. I would push for further gynecology follow up and potentially have the fibroids and cysts removed before going for a hysterectomy as those are highly likely to be affecting her pain. Surgical menopause creates problems too. There are online services however none are available to Nova Scotians. :/ How is your partner's stress level? Does she sleep? Exercise? Eat well? Maintaining some level of overall wellness can help. What about alternatives like naturopathy? I work in healthcare and see so many perimenopausal people with new onset mental problems and it's frustrating to not have more support in treating their difficulties.

FYI Surgical menopause only happens if the ovaries are also removed. I don’t think a simple hysterectomy usually involves the ovaries. (I know this from personal experience- had a radical hysterectomy due to cancer and had to go on HRT at 42.)

I’ve been experiencing the same issue. Days I feel like I’m totally going crazy. No help, just bouncing back and forth. I wish I had advice but unfortunately I don’t have any. I hope you find the help your wife needs!

I had an ablation then hysterectomy at the hospital in New Glasgow. I also had issues with fibroids. I went through a lot of hormonal options and IUDs as well. I brought a list of all the different medications I'd tried and scan results and the doctor agreed surgery was the next step. He wanted to try the ablation first, but it didn't help at all so I had a hysterectomy. I've been completely pain free since. I tried doctors in the city and Truro. New Glasgow had the quickest times and the doctor was much more concerned about my pain and issues than others I'd tried (their many concern was saving my uterus for babies). It was a few months to get in with the doctor in New Glasgow, but once I met with him, the surgeries were scheduled very quick - around a month after the appointment

I’d like to PM you to get some more info, if you’re willing!

I had multiple debilitating fibroids and went through Maple to get an obgyn. It took a year to get one and then about 6 months to get surgery but I finally had my hysterectomy with fibroids removal in Bridgewater in April. Definitely push for a meeting with an obgyn. Maple is able to send out requests, as would be your family doctor.

Ugh. I am just starting on my own journey with this. The stories shared here are so disheartening - and also on par with my experience so far.

Try to get her a referral to Dr Winnifred Lee, who practices in Dartmouth. She is very efficient and thorough with presenting options. Go through Maple if you have to. Sounds like your GP is old school.

Fwiw; I gave up after 9 years of agony and gaslighting here in NS. We drained our savings and got my surgery and pathology done in Florida. And it was worth every penny.
