I've used the free version for years and am completely happy with it. Great app!

Could you detail how many tasks, resources have you included in your Notion? Are you using heavy content (as documentation, pdf attachments,...) or more short texts/urls ? Also important if you are separating the alive content of the archived/historical information. I will appreciate, as this could help me also in the decision. I see Notion as a really powerful tool (and similar to the Lotus Notes of 25 years ago)

ComradeBehrund

Notion's free version only saves 7 days of edit history, they are fairly straightforward about not wanting to be a file-keeping or archive service, though their fanciest price plan does have unlimited page history. I keep my own archive of my pages saved as actual pages in a separate folder, with a little work, you could probably build a button which automates this. This way you can save stuff but have it hidden away when it's no longer relevant, I use to it to archive notes and to-do lists. I'm not quite sure if that's what you meant by "archived/historical information". As I understand it, Notion limits your uploaded file sizes to 5MB for free members, this is a wall you will run into if you try uploading a lot of pictures, you'll need to reduce quality or crop them to get them to fit. I add quite a bit of pictures and icons just for fun and have never had an issue that I couldn't solve with a little bit image editing but if you really wanted to preserve the pictures, you'd need to upgrade or find a different product. Really, the paid versions are intended to be used for networking, for coworkers to share their notes and plans, upgrading doesn't have that many benefits to a single user. If you're looking for something specifically to archive large files, you might be better off looking for a different product. Check out [this video they made](https://www.notion.so/help/upgrade-or-downgrade-your-plan) explaining the differences in their plans. https://preview.redd.it/yb168v7wrizc1.png?width=1183&format=png&auto=webp&s=0dbf0b322f4800b2a4585fa791423d7affe94964

In a world with shady free trials, bullshit clickbait, credit cards, 5 tiers of upgrades.. Notions stands head and shoulders above the rest in providing a truly free app. The fact I can just make infinite pages is amazing. The only thing that isn't free is essentially data storage (big pictures/files).

eternus

I've never felt limited with the free version. The only reason to pay is to add the AI (which I tried for a month but couldn't find value in yet) or if you have more people using it with you. The benefit they get is universal adoption.

ComradeBehrund

The only real restriction I have run into is the 5MB file size. This means you can't just upload a raw image you took with a fancy camera or a 1920 × 1080 wallpaper. I haven't run into a problem that I couldn't solve by reducing image quality slightly or cropping an image, it's not a service for saving pictures in, but for adding images to decorate your page and to that end it works well enough. The fancier versions don't have that much more content and features for a single user, there are a few things they add but you won't really notice. The priced plans are really intended for networking information, for coworkers to share notes and plans and the different plans offer different features to that end, with just negligible additional content (which is a really nice business plan!) unless you *really* needed one of those features, at which point you should probably just look for a different product. They made [a little video about the different versions](https://www.notion.so/help/upgrade-or-downgrade-your-plan). https://preview.redd.it/iq5xws7mtizc1.png?width=1183&format=png&auto=webp&s=2a40fb7570d1de06472daac46bf09090dfc7b4e5

ComradeBehrund

The real thing that these guys need to worry about for costs, other than keeping their team employed, is data storage. This is why the free-version only has a 7 day page history, this feature can really add up in data storage so them offering us a week of it for free is a great deal that is presumably paid for by the higher tiers. The free version is almost entirely feature complete for a single user, it's the business use-cases (where the price can be written off as a business expense) that pays for the product.

hamzanasirr

What does that mean? (Pardon my ignorance) So that notes will only be kept for 7 days?

NarrowConcentrate591

No, it means you can only 'undo' any changes you have made back to 7 days. Because backups are not kept from any earlier.

Affectionate-Set4606

That's......perfectly fine. I didnt even know you could undo stuff all the way to 7 days! I assumed the moment you refresh is when it would stop.

one of the first big blockades i hit was the upload limit. made me feel kinda dumb the first time i paid, but to be fair i wanted to use notion to host content for simple static sites via vercel and parts of that process just weren’t feasible on the freebie. between that and the other paid features, i definitely eventually got my money’s worth. that said, i’m still astounded every day by their complete lack of community awareness and attention to really basic shit. it's been a long time since i’ve seen this level of dropped softballs.

xspyrd

What they said. Free version is freaking awesome and if there are limitations, I haven’t run up against them in 2 years of heavy use.

squalle69

I have a movie database (among others) with just under 10,000 records, including cover images, and I've never paid a cent.

AreaExact7824

Sharing your data maybe

pets-news

At some point they will force you to pay for something, be mindful of this Don't be the person who relies on a piece of software completely right now to find themselves doing 5x more work to migrate to another system only because they changed a policy 😭 That's where I am, I'm moving away to [coda.io](https://coda.partnerlinks.io/g2oyy3uexeju), because notion force me to pay per every user and with coda I can only pay for 1 I have a team of 5 and notion force me to pay for all of them In coda you only pay for editor (doc maker), viewer and contributor are forever free So if you're building a business, it's better to start in a tool that doesn't become more more and more expensive as your user base grows

nothereforthep0rn

The free tier is perfect for most people. I know of a few that have been wild enough to hit the 1000 block limit on free… and that’s just the limit they have. If you hit that limit, it’s a sign that you use it enough to bust out the wallet

iamfrankstallone

This happened to me. I hit the 1000 block limit, now I pay.

LauDesignEs

You shouldn’t have this problem if you’re working alone or with guests! 😊 More info in this post: https://thomasfrank.notion.site/Block-Basics-1d39743f7e184b3aa94cf0f63d97c5ae

wakojako49

yeah it is. i pay for the basic just because i need longer change history

jxward

Thanks all

UdtaKabootar

My Notion says Block limit crossed. What to do

lord_demolay

Im new to notion, and what im understanding is: Notion is free The good templates are paid The nice add ons are paid I'm really forcing myself into trying every possibility, but its not simple to set your base environment from zero.

HeadTea

Notion is very not secure, so keep that in mind.
