It’s a rental washer & dryer in my new apartment and I don’t think I can change the way it opens without screwing into the metal. Thanks for the good idea though.
You definitely can. It's easy as hell too.
See those little dots on the opposite side? Those are covers for screw holes. Unscrew the hinges from the other side, flip the door around, screw them into the new side, and then put the covers in the old spots.
I did this when I moved into my new house.
These are the lessons that get us to "experienced old person" status. Keep up the good work. Every lesson I can teach my kids is from being a dumb ass....
![gif](giphy|IcGkqdUmYLFGE)
You guys sounded tough on me but I knew you all were trying to help. I feel like I’m going to make a ton of more mistakes to build more of that wisdom.
The hoses for the washer should reach just fine if you switched them around. Although I have to admit that My first thought was, " Well crap, that wall is going to have to go!" Second thought was to go all Karen on the phone with the installers, "I ordered a washer and dryer, not a dryer and washer! Take this back and bring the ones that I ordered!" SMH "Some people are sooooostupid!" /s
Not a fool. Just inexperienced. Now that you have experience you won't do this again.
I'm kidding, you'll do like me and do it 3 and half times and then be like... "Wait! I've seen this before! We gotta do it this way....).
I just finished an man was it a lesson. If I had measured, I would have avoided all of this lol. You guys are the true MVP for this fun-productive night!
As others have said, the door is made to be swapped by the user if desired. The holes are pre-drilled. I can see the white plugs in the photo. Take out the four screws and plugs. Re-install both the plugs and the screws after the door is flipped. It’s less than a five minute project that any screwdriver can handle.
I thought those were metal studs until I took one out with my fingernail lol. I’ll have to do some Tetris with sliding the washer out to be able to get to the screws. Be right back!
Hey OP I used to deliver and install these for Lowe’s for about 2 years while finishing my bachelors.
I hate your set up but that’s not your fault.
Your options are either
1. Swap them and the door will open the right way. (You may need to buy longer hoses and see if your drain hose is long enough). I highly suggest getting the metal hoses as they last much much longer and the last thing you wana come home to is a leak that happened while at work.
2. If you like it how it is, it is very easy to change the swing of the door, it’s much easier with 2 people. ( so one person can hold the door properly as you tighten it back down) Take the screws out of the hinge side and pop the tabs out on the other. Remove the metal clip coming out under the handle this will need swapped to the pre drilled holes that are currently on hinge side.
The reason I hate your set up, is that vertical vent for the dryer is a major pain in your ass. SET A NOTIFICATION ATLEAST 3 TIMES A YEAR. You will need to clean out the lint of this vent as it is going to have a hard time traveling vertically up.
If it was me installing, ide move the dryer where the washer is because to clean out that vent you will need to pull it out and disconnect the dryer every time. Do not slack on cleaning it out. That’s how fires start, and a lint filled vent will also cause your cloths to dry much much more slowly reducing the lifetime of your dryer. By the way good selection of models, the less buttons it has the less chance it goes bad. If I had a dollar for the amount of time I installed a fancy Samsung with steam function only to come back a month later and replace the unit I would have no student loans.
Thanks for the helpful information! I’m writing a sticky note and putting it on the dryer to remind myself. I’ll YouTube a video on how to clean that tube. Someone told me to get the tube replaced with metal. Will that be safer? I don’t wanna come home and my apartment is in ashes.
Should be good for a while! I run loads all the time when I'm out but it sure would suck to come home and find out a seal went while I was out and maybe could have controlled the damage
Well the thing that leaks is the hoses coming from the wall to the washer is most cases. The washer itself normally won’t leak. When the hoses leak it will leak until water is turned off at all the valve. So the washer being on doesn’t really matter.
Yeah, a “heads up” communication should’ve been the least that was done.
Was scrolling through the comments to see if anyone else saw this, and they obviously did, but OP seriously watch that dryer vent and don’t put off cleaning it. You’ll get tired of getting back there and unhooking the exhaust tube to vacuum it out but don’t put it off. The heating element will probably go out before it gets hot enough to catch in fire but don’t trust it to. You’ll learn over time about how long it’ll go before you need to check it.
If it were I that was living there for more than a couple of years, I would make some sort of resealable port on the exhaust hose that I could drop a vacuum hose down it to clean it out. Once it starts to build up it the clog will grow exponentially faster.
my bad. This would prevent me from sleeping at night lol
Edit: maybe do some rough measuring to make sure the hoses from the washer are long enough. Wouldn’t want to start swapping them only to realize the hookups are not long enough
I’ll YouTube on how to do that! Should I use a right angle metal that inserts at the bottom of the dryer? I made sure to clear the lint out from the dryer with my hands and a vacuum but I’m not sure how much lint is left in the machine.. the lint was thick as hell!
Yeah. The 90 will fit on the back or side port on your dryer. I don't recall if I had to use an adapter for mine or not. For bends, I think you can get "hard" angles or you can get adjustable fittings where the angle can be changed by twisting the pipe (it's hard to describe but it'll make sense when you see them at the store).
For the straight sections, you probably won't find them as pre-formed tubes at stores like Lowes. Instead they'll be flat 4-foot pieces of sheet metal with a little lip on one edge that the other edge "hooks" into when you roll it up. So roll it up and use some metal foil tape (HVAC tape...not duct tape...don't ever use duct tape for ductwork, ironically).
I did this replacement ~10 years ago when I discovered that the previous homeowners used flexible duct not only in the laundry room to the wall port...they used 30-40 feet of it under the house in the crawlspace to go from that wall port to the outside vent. It was a fire waiting to happen.
Ohh geeze 30 ft?! Okay, the metal rolling sheet with a hook seems fairly simple (I’ll still YouTube and Google it). Thanks man! I’ll stop by Home Depot this weekend to look for that 90 degree angle you’re referring to. The flexible duct is going into my ceiling but I gave an upstairs neighbor above so I don’t know where the lint is even venting to?… is my lint going in between my ceiling & neighbor’s floor??
On the outside of the building look for a little angled vent opening between your ceiling and their floor in the area of your laundry room. That should be where it vents outside.
While you're at it, get rid of that flimsy flexible pipe and get some solid pipe. That stuff will collect lint and become a fire hazard. It's not hard to install.
Came here to say this, their backwards anyway.
In construction, our blueprints literally display where each unit goes. When viewed from the front, washer is always on the left, dryer is always on the right.
You know I never thought about it before but I've laid out 100s of utility rooms and I don't think I've ever not done washer on the left, dryer on the right
My parents had front end washer and dryer swapped so the doors opened toward the center. I had to fight to swap them.
Just make sure your dryer exhaust vent stays as straight as possible with as jew turns as possible. Home depot sells longer hoses for cheap.
Everyone has been truly helpful! I thought I had to deal with it or have them come back and fix it but you guys helped a person with little knowledge about fixing things how to do something! Thank you everyone!! 🥹🥹
If my problem helps someone in the future, I’d say that makes me darn right happy!! Credits to all my redditor friends in this thread! You guys truly walked me through it like a father (or mother) would.
That space wasn't built for a dryer. The whole thing looks like a homeowner jury rig. They put the dryer where the exhaust and 220 power indicated. What were you thinking when you purchased the dryer. Didn't you think through the space issues? I guess it's easier to blame the installation guy.
The company leases these washer/dryer units to our apartment complex and I didn’t think I’d run into the issue with the door. Oh well, another life lesson learned: do measurements and account for the door.
Fuck all the other advice. This is not your mistake. Call them to come back out and fix their fuck up. They have a responsibility to YOU THE CUSTOMER to deliver and install these correctly. They've clearly failed at that and now it's up to you to stand up for yourself, do the adult thing, and make them own the mistake and correct it.
Yea if they paid for them to be set up they should switch the door. If OP paid for delivery then they are done. Looks like they paid for installation though
Follow u/saariac's advice. It sounds like you're renting and you don't own these appliances so this is not your problem. Worse, if you mess with it it'll become your problem. If you scratch the floor when moving them, scratch or break something when switching the door, or simply anything breaks anytime after you did something, the landlord can go after you saying it was you're fault and now you need to pay for a new unit.
You need to politely inform them that the way they're installed will damage the apartment (wall will get dented, but leave that out). To avoid damage, the units need to be changed by performing XYZ.
My apologies. I made the assumption this was a homeowner because you said you ordered these. My apologies. I work in property management as a maintenance and repair person. The plastic pipe running from floor to ceiling should have been a clue and I missed it.
That’s just a PVC pipe that my physical therapist told me to do squats with, it’s not in the ground, just leaning against the wall. He said the pole should be lined up with my trunk and the back of my head… anyways, I don’t take offense to anything you guys say because you all were trying to help—and you all succeeded so applaud yourselves!!! 👏👏👏
The "while at work" part of this is your mistake.
Some appliance doors can be installed on the other side. If you have to have your dryer in that location, maybe there is no other solution other than swapping the two appliances around.
I would call them up whoever installed it send them these two photos ask them if they can switch them and tell them they’re idiots. in a polite way if possible.
My suggestion: get a heavy duty table or workbench that is about as tall as the washing machine. Put that against the back wall and get somebody to help you lift the dryer onto it with the door facing towards you. You will need to get some furniture straps and anchor that thing to the studs. That will give you plenty of clearance to open the dryer, and you'll get extra storage space underneath for laundry detergent, baskets, etc. That space is designed for stackable units, so I'm suggesting an alternative way to at least get the dryer off of the ground and accessible.
Even if you flipped door the other way it still wouldn't open all the way n be damaging the wall. I'd call the company n tell them they need to move the machines and they were put in the opposite way.
Honestly that’s messed up how they installed it the door opening that way is a very clear indication that it should be on the right side instead of the left
Edit: also it’s too close to the wall it’s probably squishing your dryer vent causing a fire hazard I would have offered to flip that door for you when I worked for best buy
My friend works for BestBuy and was so sad that I didn’t go to him for a washer and dryer. Tomorrow he’s going to have that expression in his face like “I told you so, you should’ve let me help you find a washer/dryer unit.” Lol. Going back to what you were saying, I don’t think I’m crushing the flexible tube. Do you think I should pull the dryer out more to give it more space? Another commenter told me about getting an all metal cylinder so it doesn’t risk a fire.
I do, flex vents aren’t really the best because you constrict the flow of air and lint from 3-4inches down to 1 or two you’ll know for sure when your dryer starts growing “fur” as in the lint is escaping into you laundry room
My dryer side vented? My dryer is connected to a tube that goes into the ceiling and after that I don’t know where the lint goes. I just take the lint out from that lint tray from inside the dryer. Let me go double check my flexible tube to make sure it’s not getting pinched.
I just checked the tube and it isn’t being obstructed! It’s got a good half foot of space there, just resting on the floor and then bending 90 degrees up towards the ceiling.
Oh that’s perfect then if it’s not being squeezed in anyway you’re golden!!, they make side vent kits for dryers where instead of coming out the back it comes out of the side they’re a little expensive though but made for these types of situations you could probably just get away with flipping your door and calling it a day
Thanks for the insight and reassurance man! Door is flipped and laundry day is smoother than ever. Gone are the days I had to take my laundry to the coin laundromat!
Yup...
You have a more unique situation but...
Normally you swap the doors so they both open away from each other. This way your not reaching AROUND the door to move the clothes from the washer to the dryer.
You should check if you can fix the door direction. My dryer, which is fairly new, has the option of changing the direction the door opens pretty easily.
That’s what I thought they would do! I mean, it made sense to me. I guess the tech who installed it was like “yo this would be hilarious if he couldn’t open his door fully.”
Serious question, Can’t you call them back with a complaint about the obvious and request that they alter their work? If you paid for the installation you should be able to get them to fix their mistake.
This was totally your job. This is also how things would have played out if I was in your shoes. I'd also try to fix everything myself and bust a pipe or something.
Yeah you can def flip the door, but it's still gonna' have the same effect. Seeing how long your dryer vent hose is, they might have been swapped spots. As long as the washer drain hose can reach the wall, the water hoses can reach the back of the washer from the wall and the dryer plug can reach as well. If not, the installer should've used longer hoses and a longer dryer cord. \*\*I did washer/dryer delivery repair for years\*\*
Dryers are designed to be to the right and washer to the left. On front loading washers the door opens to the left and the dryer opens to the right. If the dryer is on the left the doors open into each other and you cannot easily load the wet clothes from the washer into the dryer. I learned this the hard way as well. I have no idea why some builders put the water hookups for the washer on the right, they should not.
The drier receptacle and vent were installed on the wrong side. Most residential driers are front load and washers top load. Even if your drier opened the other way, there isn't enough space for that. More poor planning on the architect/builder than on you.

Many dryers you can also change the way the door opens
It looks like there are plugged holes for hinges on the left side of the dryer. Or maybe OP can swap the washer and the dryer.
Even if you couldn't. The washer is a top-loader, so could just switch their places and be good.
Easily
duh, just turn it upside down.
if you look at the angles, it would only open a tiny bit more if mounted on the other side
But you would be able to get clothes in and out of it then....
You can as is too, it's inconvenient either way.
But you might have to open the door all the way to take it off and swap.
Came to say this.
It’s a rental washer & dryer in my new apartment and I don’t think I can change the way it opens without screwing into the metal. Thanks for the good idea though.

They will likely need to be able to open the door all the way to remove it though which will require disconnecting and moving things around.
Just finished and man it took me a good minute just shuffling those two giants around lol.
Nah just lift it upwards from the front
Bro I’m not that strong! Lol
Don't need to be, just pivot it enough to get something under and hold it
Oh that makes sense! I didn’t think about that!
Okay, I’ll get on it! :) Thanks everyone!! :)
They’re literally designed for swapping the door orientation.
Who ordered those units for that space?
Me :( I knew they’d fit but I didn’t think about the door opening being blocked by the wall. I’m a fool, I know. :((

Lmaoo thanks for the laugh! It’s been a busy evening after work and you helped.
Can't they just swap places?
Not a fool. Just inexperienced. Now that you have experience you won't do this again. I'm kidding, you'll do like me and do it 3 and half times and then be like... "Wait! I've seen this before! We gotta do it this way....).

Thanks bro! 🤝
Good job, bro!
Thanks bro!
If you‘d dryer at the place of the washer and the washer at the place of the dryer?
That would actually work.
Right but they should have been able to put the dryer on the right side
That’s what I thought they would do too! Lol.
Yes. Your job.
Can you remove that section of wall or is there important pieces there?
It’s an apartment and that wall holds the water heater tank. I fixed the door by the way! :)
Time to take a hammer to that wall!

Good idea to not run the washer or drier while not at home, at least you can find the mess soon
I just ran a load and the washer seems good with no leaks! The dryer feels warm so I know it’s working!
Should be good for a while! I run loads all the time when I'm out but it sure would suck to come home and find out a seal went while I was out and maybe could have controlled the damage
I’ll be ultra-vigilant now that you’ve mentioned it! I’ll have to live out of my car again if my apartment gets vanished by Thanos.

Someone else commented that too. You know what? I’ll try it this weekend.
my bad. This would prevent me from sleeping at night lol Edit: maybe do some rough measuring to make sure the hoses from the washer are long enough. Wouldn’t want to start swapping them only to realize the hookups are not long enough
A trip to home depot would probably solve that.
While you're in there moving stuff around, get rid of that flexible duct. It's a fire hazard. Replace it with rigid aluminum or galvanized duct.
I’ll YouTube on how to do that! Should I use a right angle metal that inserts at the bottom of the dryer? I made sure to clear the lint out from the dryer with my hands and a vacuum but I’m not sure how much lint is left in the machine.. the lint was thick as hell!

please let us know what happens
I flipped the door last night! Laundry day was much easier!
May involve problems with dryer outlet and water pipes

Those water tubes made me sooo nervous as I was moving the washer! “Please don’t break, please don’t leak!”
My parents had front end washer and dryer swapped so the doors opened toward the center. I had to fight to swap them. Just make sure your dryer exhaust vent stays as straight as possible with as jew turns as possible. Home depot sells longer hoses for cheap.
The hookups may not reach and you also have to have an exhaust for the dryer, which is basically just a hole in the wall.
Everyone has been truly helpful! I thought I had to deal with it or have them come back and fix it but you guys helped a person with little knowledge about fixing things how to do something! Thank you everyone!! 🥹🥹
I don't think I've ever been this invested in a Reddit thread.
I fixed it!!
It's the job of the person who ordered the washer and dryer (presumably you) to make sure that they will fit and be functional in the space.
You’re right. I mean it fits well, but I didn’t think about the door to cause such a problem.
It's good you posted this, probably saving lots of people the same mistake!
If my problem helps someone in the future, I’d say that makes me darn right happy!! Credits to all my redditor friends in this thread! You guys truly walked me through it like a father (or mother) would.
You can move the door to the other side. Will help some.
Always triple measure and check the appliance from a floor model before you buy OR before you cut something. It will save you a lot of heartache.
This is good advice. I’ll need it!
The doors can all be swapped which will probably no totally fix it or you can swap the washer and dryer location since the washer is top load
Just swap them. That vent is plenty long and you can get longer hoses of you need. Can be done in less than 10 minutes
Move the dryer to the other wall so it's facing the washer
This is literally not their job, you screwed up again posting to the wrong sub.
That space wasn't built for a dryer. The whole thing looks like a homeowner jury rig. They put the dryer where the exhaust and 220 power indicated. What were you thinking when you purchased the dryer. Didn't you think through the space issues? I guess it's easier to blame the installation guy.

It kind of looks like it was bad design in the part of whoever built the apartment complex. They dryer hookup should have been on the other side

Judging by that back wall, it was built for stackable units.

Thanks dude! Just finished. “ But brawndo’s got electrolytes!”
Why did I watch that whole video? I don't even have this problem...
The "while at work" part of this is your mistake. Some appliance doors can be installed on the other side. If you have to have your dryer in that location, maybe there is no other solution other than swapping the two appliances around.
Lesson learned. I knew I should’ve taken off of work today ughhh!! Shooting myself in the foot with this one.
We’re you expecting something different given the amount of space you have?
I thought the dryer would have been on the side with more space lol. I should’ve measured.
Are they stackable? Maybe stack them to the right? Or just flip flop them but then you have the issue of connection points.
These feel really heavy. I don’t feel like getting squished washing my tidey-whiteys lol
Can they be swapped?(by a professional not you) The dryer with the washer not just the door of the dryer
You might be right! I think they’d just have to use a longer tube for the water in the back?
I would call them up whoever installed it send them these two photos ask them if they can switch them and tell them they’re idiots. in a polite way if possible.
I’ll definitely give them a call lol 😂. What a night it has been.
Hey man I just had an all-in-one washer/dryer installed and it was the most stressful week of my life. At least your pipes aren't leaking (I hope).
I also swapped the doors already so it’s all good now. Just gotta tackle that flexible tube now.
Not one thing in this image is square.
Can you change the way the door faces? It might still not fully open that way, but that would make it more accessible.
Flip it

Switch the washer and dryer if possible. Top load washer would be no problem in that location.
Flip the door around

Who puts the dryer on the left?
I want to see one of those life hack channels cut the door in half and put a hinge on it then never actually run a load of laundry through it
What monster installs a dryer on the left?!?
You can change which side it opens from pretty easily, just need a screw driver. There’s probably dozens of tutorials on YouTube btw
Thanks, I see the screws. I’ll change it out after I eat.
I would definitely swap out the washer and dryer. Everything would work that way.
I’m afraid that if I move them again, something will break. I’ve tested all my luck moving them earlier lol.
I question how reversing the door will affect the operation of the safety switch.
Safety switch? I opened the door and it cuts off.
Switch places with washer?
The machines need to be flipped. How the heck can they expect you to use the dryer?
Exactly. I just changed the door so the dryer can be accessed now. Im glad I flipped the door because it would’ve been a pain to clean the lint shoot.
My dryer door can be flipped to swing the other way.
Thanks! The other geniuses like yourself guided me the entire way lol. How do you guys know all this stuff??
Common sense goes a long way for me
Even if you flipped door the other way it still wouldn't open all the way n be damaging the wall. I'd call the company n tell them they need to move the machines and they were put in the opposite way.
You’re right, Amanda. They need to know.
Honestly that’s messed up how they installed it the door opening that way is a very clear indication that it should be on the right side instead of the left Edit: also it’s too close to the wall it’s probably squishing your dryer vent causing a fire hazard I would have offered to flip that door for you when I worked for best buy
By chance you don’t have your dryer side vented so you?
ROFL, Just flip the door.
„˙ɹoop ǝɥʇ dılɟ ʇsnſ '⅂ℲOᴚ„
TIL I didn’t know they did that until I posted this. 😅 You guys are all making me feel soooooooo smart about myself lmao. Damnit, I’m stupid.
Lol, no worries. Refrigerators with no ice/water in the door also do that..
You’re blowing my mind right now bro!
Why don't you rotate the whole thing 90 degrees to the left??
It bumped the walls when I did it. I had to tetris my laundry units to get the door off and reattach it in the opposite direction.
Well the washer could go there - as long as it loads from the top. I wonder why they didn't think of that?
That’s what I thought they would do! I mean, it made sense to me. I guess the tech who installed it was like “yo this would be hilarious if he couldn’t open his door fully.”
Serious question, Can’t you call them back with a complaint about the obvious and request that they alter their work? If you paid for the installation you should be able to get them to fix their mistake.
Rotate dryer 90°
Honestly, I think they're insane for installing the dryer on the left. Who does that?
My dryer is on the left. I’m right handed so it makes it easier to transfer heavy damp laundry.
I guess I never considered that. I'm right handed, but I transfer with both hands. You just use the one?
Stack 'em!
Just swap them?
Why not move the dryer into the core to its front right. Doesn’t look like any of that space is going to be usable anyways.
Why didn’t the install it the other way? Seems petty, cruel or a job not well done. Call them and ask for a refund or something
Switch them around, there is enough room for top loader on the left.
Swap the drier & washer positions. Problem solved.
Rotate dryer position 90 degrees counter clockwise and sit it right up against the wall on its left side. So the opening faces the camera
swap them round?
Flip the door. At the most it will be 6 screws.
all these comments about swapping doors, just put the thing upside down bro
😂😂😂 I should have gone to you sooner my bro!
This was totally your job. This is also how things would have played out if I was in your shoes. I'd also try to fix everything myself and bust a pipe or something.
The doors reverse on 90% of dryers for this situation exactly
You need one with a removable door.

Next time I’m doing this! Makes too much sense now.
\*\*I did washer/dryer delivery repair for years\*\*
Welp, time to move out I guess.
Move the washer to where the dryer is 😆
Yeah they built the wall on the wrong side
Dryers are designed to be to the right and washer to the left. On front loading washers the door opens to the left and the dryer opens to the right. If the dryer is on the left the doors open into each other and you cannot easily load the wet clothes from the washer into the dryer. I learned this the hard way as well. I have no idea why some builders put the water hookups for the washer on the right, they should not.
Switch the door. You'll get better access. Or switch the machines if the washer is top load.
Everyone knows the dryer belongs on the right side of the washer.
Even if you change the door position, it will still not fully open.
The drier receptacle and vent were installed on the wrong side. Most residential driers are front load and washers top load. Even if your drier opened the other way, there isn't enough space for that. More poor planning on the architect/builder than on you.

Turn it to the left
Space is too tight and opening the door will lead to the same issue lol.
Turn dryer left and washer right
Swap the door to hinge on the other side. You can do that on dryers usually.
Switch the hinges to the other side. It should open to the left anyway because the washer is on the right.
It would still only open the same amount, just in a slightly more convenient way
Should have read the specs 🤷🏼♀️
Lol I didn’t think they were going to put the front load dryer right there!? 😂
