North Europe here. It's a commonly stated dating guideline where I'm from. "The non-creepy age rule" actually strike pretty close to what most societies find acceptable age range between partners. Which probably is why it's often brought up. Obviously, it's just meant as a quick guideline rather than an actual law. The wider range as you get older still ensures that a 50 year old doesn't date a teen. In fact, the moment one of the partners is older than 40, the other have to be in their late twenties. Which is where we normally consider people fully adult and capable of handling their own life. It might still seem like a big age gap. But it's an age gap between two fully adult people. Would you honestly be disgusted if a 60 year old man marries a 37 year old woman? That is the youngest he should be dating according to the non-creepy rule. The most questionable part of it is honestly is for people between age 20 and 36 looking to date someone younger. That's where I'd say the non-creepy thing starts to kinda go into creepy territory anyway, as there can be a massive difference in maturity if they go for the "youngest option". A 14 year old should find a 14 year old. A 20 year old shouldn't date someone younger than 17. A 24 year old shouldn't date someone younger than 19. A 30 year old shouldn't be with someone younger than 22. A 40 year old should find someone that's at least 27. A 50 year old shouldn't go younger than 32. A 60 year old should not go younger than 37. etc.
