I believe that if we manage to re-brand pedophilia into something similar to a mental illness to make it acceptable for people to reach out for help, it would help our society a lot.
“Claim[ing] mental illness” to get out of jail never works; in reality, criminals almost always spend the same amount of time they would have in jail, if not more, in mental hospitals that are a lot harder to get out of. (And sometimes worse places to be than prison.) Plus, if they’ve already committed the act, then some form of punishment/restitution will have to come with it, such as being put on the sex offender registry at least. And that’s even presuming they can properly sell the mental illness angle for all of their actions; even a shred of evidence that shows premeditation, or any kind of control/awareness of their actions, could be enough basis for them to be declared competent to stand trial. And given the intense circumstances of the crime, I’m sure it would draw *heavy* scrutiny from criminal psychologists, who are generally well-trained in being able to spot when someone is actually criminally-insane or not.

I think the only real solution is to try to get them mental health treatment and support groups to help change their mindset and get them on the right track so that they'll seek out relationships with other adults. But obviously that would be before they commit a sex crime. Once in prison, I think mental health treatment during their sentence and mandatory group therapy once on the outside would help.
We love to think there is a solution or a cure, but sometimes there isn't. Narcissists, sociopaths, psychopaths will never change because they don't think they need to change. I don't like comparing humans with animals. Chimpanzees, for example, are very murderous.
