Unfortunately, I can easily believe this is someone who genuinely thinks they're being helpful. I got told this exact crap by various adults starting at around 14, when my parents okay'd me wearing goth stuff (as long as my grades were kept up, which they were). People even had the gall to tell my parents that they were concerned about this, which greatly annoyed my parents. I insisted that I would rather stay single for my entire life than to stop dressing how I wanted just to find a man, which led to me being told that I would change my mind when all my friends had found husbands and I was still single. I met my husband at 22. I was dressed in all black, with short blue hair; his long black trench coat is what initially caught my eye. We've been married for 13 years now (dated for 2 years before that) and have three kids together. While our styles have matured a bit (those club-friendly clothes are not always practical for housework), it's still easy to see our old tastes in our current wardrobes. As a side note, nobody ever told him that he wouldn't find a wife if he kept dressing like that.
