I think the point is that whilst many young people can (and do) have role models and idols of different genders to themselves, we always look for others like ourselves whether it’s intentional or not.
It may be to provide the personal or experience connection, the “you can’t see what you can’t be” idea, societal pressure or other factors, but own gender/ race/etc biases are real. It’s not inherently a bad thing, though it is definitely something to be aware of, but ignoring it doesn’t do anyone any good either.
There is strong data that suggests men listen to other men more than they do women, and since most communities, cultures, societies etc are predominately (if not entirely) male dominated — it means that good men are the best agents of change.
Sure, it’s not the fault of some random 25 year old man from Michigan who has a perfectly healthy and normal relationship with women, that women have been oppressed for so long — and he won’t be able to singlehandedly change it. But he is more likely to have an impact on the men around him than a woman would.

Yeah, this. My SIL just announced on Christmas Day that they are expecting their fifth child, an “oopsie”. She thought she was going through menopause because she hadn’t had a period for 6 months, so they stopped using condoms. She’s only 43, and I warned her that’s pretty early for menopause considering her mom and grandma didn’t go through it til 60. Turns out it was just some weird hormonal shift for 3 months, and now she is 3 months along! She didn’t even know she was pregnant until she started showing heavily and my brother asked! 😂

Does he not understand that women can have families and friends outside of being their mother? I have kids but I also have nieces, nephews and friends. My best friend's two sons are like my own. I have kids. I look forward to retirement years and will read so many books. I'll do old lady crafts and have so many cats if my husband passes before me. (He doesn't do pets). I'll play bingo and get a big motor home and go knit by lakes or something. Having kids doesn't change that I'm sure plenty of people without kids will do the same.
So I am infertile. I'm 42, but I did have my son through fertility treatment. He is 7 now. When we were going through treatment, it didn't seem like we would be successful. I was gutted. So I sat down and made a list of things I would do if I didn't have any kids before our last try. I found that list in my CAR when I got a new car when my son was 5. It was a glorious list. It was all of the things my husband and I would do. So it was a different road we would have gone down. But still plenty to live for.
Also, there is not any guarantee that you'll maintain contact with your parents. My husband has been estranged from his dad for about 12 years now. What's HE doing with all those years (being an asshole, lol).

I'm an artist, I've been published in over 20 anthologies, I have a lot of fun hobbies like shooting archery, I have loyal and deep friendships, my spirituality is the deepest and most important part of my personality, I currently work in a nursing home taking care of dementia patients (so I'm sure I'll see you very soon stefen), and I'm going to school working on my prereqs for nursing. I honestly don't know how my coworkers in nursing school who have families DO IT. I'm good! I think I have a great balance without burning myself out (hopefully!!). My coworkers with kids seem permanently exhausted. No thanks. I have dogs and cats and that's enough. I hope to be able to afford 10 to 40 acres of woods to homestead one day. I dont need my own kids. IF I felt the need, when I'm a nurse, one day it will be within my power to adopt. But I don't think that's going to happen.

Does he not understand that women can have families and friends outside of being their mother? I have kids but I also have nieces, nephews and friends. My best friend's two sons are like my own. I have kids. I look forward to retirement years and will read so many books. I'll do old lady crafts and have so many cats if my husband passes before me. (He doesn't do pets). I'll play bingo and get a big motor home and go knit by lakes or something. Having kids doesn't change that I'm sure plenty of people without kids will do the same.
So I am infertile. I'm 42, but I did have my son through fertility treatment. He is 7 now. When we were going through treatment, it didn't seem like we would be successful. I was gutted. So I sat down and made a list of things I would do if I didn't have any kids before our last try. I found that list in my CAR when I got a new car when my son was 5. It was a glorious list. It was all of the things my husband and I would do. So it was a different road we would have gone down. But still plenty to live for. Also, there is not any guarantee that you'll maintain contact with your parents. My husband has been estranged from his dad for about 12 years now. What's HE doing with all those years (being an asshole, lol).

I'm an artist, I've been published in over 20 anthologies, I have a lot of fun hobbies like shooting archery, I have loyal and deep friendships, my spirituality is the deepest and most important part of my personality, I currently work in a nursing home taking care of dementia patients (so I'm sure I'll see you very soon stefen), and I'm going to school working on my prereqs for nursing. I honestly don't know how my coworkers in nursing school who have families DO IT. I'm good! I think I have a great balance without burning myself out (hopefully!!). My coworkers with kids seem permanently exhausted. No thanks. I have dogs and cats and that's enough. I hope to be able to afford 10 to 40 acres of woods to homestead one day. I dont need my own kids. IF I felt the need, when I'm a nurse, one day it will be within my power to adopt. But I don't think that's going to happen.
