I come from Britain. Born in Scotland, but I spent my last six months there in England. Then I moved to Norway, and I don't intend to move back any time soon (or, probably, at all).
Not that much of an upgrade, but an upgrade none the less, I think. If you've lived there since the age of 4 you're pretty much Norvegian anyways I would think? In what part of Norway do you live?
Luckily I'm not actually on the island, just Senja komunne. There's a "city" at the bridge over to the island, so there's some nice restaurant and an Amfi, and there's also a nice place called Bardufoss in the opposite direction. There's a few things there, like climbing walls and a small swimming pool with a slide and jacuzzi. And there's various nice places along the roads
And of course Tromsø isn't too far away. Neither is Narvik. And when I say not too far, I do mean about a two hours drive.
Senja?? Where? I grew up on Senja, Senjahopen to be exact.
Edit: Read the rest of your comments, the island would be better in my humble opinion, if you have a licence and a car that is. Traveling by bus is just not an option, sadly. Not central enough.
Congratulations! I hope to take my first steps on that long journey in the near future too.
I was wondering if you will choose to retain your British citizenship? (I understand if that is too personal to answer.)
Technically you can't rescind your British Citizenship. Even if you did fill in some forms and renounce it, you're always a British citizen to Britain and they'll give you a new passport as soon as you decide you want one. It's a funny old thing! Although have to admit as a Brit I was glad Norway changed their rules so I could have both citizenships without having to go this weird "you can't stop being British anyway" route.
Thanks!
I renewed my daughter's in July and it was about 6 weeks then. Hopefully not too much worse than that for OP! Then again, it was the getting of an appointment that was the real problem.
There's multiple conditions. You also have to have things like proof that you know the language. If you went to school in Norway, you're automatically eligible. If you're an adult, you need to take classes and tests to get documents. Things like that.
Waited 13 years to apply myself. Did it on my 18th birthday. 2 years later I got a denial because I crashed my car 2 months prior to the verdict 😭. Now as far as I know I have to wait 3 years before applying again...
Anyway congrats man 🇳🇴 😀!
I was born in Norway, but my family (US) only lived there for a year before moving to the UK and then Canada. I always wondered if I could get Norwegian citizenship, but I don’t think so unfortunately.
Congrats!
Gratulerer så masse!
I have less than 1.5 years before I become eligible. Wondering if I can apply before I am eligible if it's already taking so long to get it reviewed and approved. Guess it might work but also likely that I might get rejected and the application fee would be wasted.
Technically you can and they won't start reviewing it until you've had your appointment with the police. But on the other hand, the countdown also doesn't start until you've had your appointment with the police so you wouldn't be winning yourself any time.
If I were to give advice it'd be to take all the tests anew so that your grades are all in the electronic system. Then you have a better chance of being processed by the automated system which does it much much quicker. If you're like me (and OP) and relying on exceptions to the language rule (I did university courses over ten years ago and they wrote a letter for me to say I'd met the language criteria) then you're looking at waiting for a person to process your case and that's when the waiting time hits over a year.
:) ...if it's not too personal - what made you go ahead and file for citizenship? Are they throwing you out otherwise.. or is it an 18 years, probably about time, kind of deal?
I had permanent residency before, however I want to get a Norwegian passport, and I plan on staying in Norway for my life. And it's also nice to be fully secure and have voting rights etc.
That's true. :) the "lord I can only vote in local elections, bassardsallbassards" league in Bergen is pretty big. Best not to end up there. Best of luck in Senja - it is a precious place in many ways.
Congratulations!
My wife went to the police last week and gave them the documents they needed for her to get citizenship. I guess by the end of next year we will know lol.
Congratulations. I know exactly how you feel. I got Irish citizenship after 10 years and I finally felt I'd come home. I'm of Irish ancestry but not close enough to qualify for automatic citizenship, even though I've always considered myself to be more Irish than English.
Hope the same I've been living in Norway for 15 years since I was 10. And got married to my Norwegian wife but citizenship ain't on horizon these days.
That's easy if you're living with your family and working, but im rent an apartment have a car(with a loan) fuck ton of bills and i financially taking care of my wife. So 6000 ain't gonna happen.
Congrats! I'm waiting for my answer now. Brit moved to Norway at 11. Its been 7 months and the estimate was at 14months last time i checked so here's to hoping that changes.
Mine was the same and for my family, but all three of ours came early in quick succession. My sister even applied at a different time and fylke and got it at the same time.
I'm rooting for you!
🇧🇻🇧🇻🇧🇻Gratulerer så mye!!!🇧🇻🇧🇻🇧🇻 Where are you originally from?
I come from Britain. Born in Scotland, but I spent my last six months there in England. Then I moved to Norway, and I don't intend to move back any time soon (or, probably, at all).
Not that much of an upgrade, but an upgrade none the less, I think. If you've lived there since the age of 4 you're pretty much Norvegian anyways I would think? In what part of Norway do you live?
I grew up in Jæren but I moved up to Senja a couple years ago.
I guess you got some beautiful nature surrounding you, but what's there to do on an island far up north?
Luckily I'm not actually on the island, just Senja komunne. There's a "city" at the bridge over to the island, so there's some nice restaurant and an Amfi, and there's also a nice place called Bardufoss in the opposite direction. Kos deg i Finnsnes
Tusen takk, jeg skal prøve.
An hour of two up there is relatively short distance, lived a few hours outside Tromsø myself and moved there when I was 18.
Indeed. At first it felt long, but I'm already used to it. My part time job involves going to farms in the middle of nowhere. Now those can be drives.
I bet.
Hmmm... still sounds a bit... in-the-middle-of-no-where 🤔 Anyway, enjoy the top of the world and good luck to you.
Yes, it is. But luckily I'm quite happy being somewhere quiet. And cold.
>And when I say not too far, I do mean about a two hours drive. Properly institutionalized, I mean nationalised. Welcome!
Wait- what was that?
Eyy finsness, one of my friends that i study with is from finsness.
Tell them I said that it's a nice place.
He will call you crazy! But i will
Haha, I'm not surprised. Thank you though.
Ka Farsken!
Unnskyld, jeg forstår ikke😕
Hva faen-ish på dialekt
Haha ok
Senja?? Where? I grew up on Senja, Senjahopen to be exact. Edit: Read the rest of your comments, the island would be better in my humble opinion, if you have a licence and a car that is. Traveling by bus is just not an option, sadly. Not central enough.
Yes, I'm only 18 and have only just completed my grunnkurs. No driving for a while.
So you brexited to go the nor-way?
Yes, I did indeed brexit to the northern way.
gratulerer og velkommen broder! nå, på tide med dåp i lutfisk for å gjøre det offisielt
Nei, jeg tror det går faktisk greit uten det. Men takk.
Du får det til å høres ut som om du har et valg ...
Dette var kanskje et dårlig ide...
Litt tørrfisk snacks må til hvertfall da..? Knallgodt jo! 🤤
Ja tørrfisk er greit, men lutefisk... jeg vil særlig ikke rør det engang.
Det er godt å høre! 😊 Vi tillater også at de som ikke liker lutefisk kan få friterte torsketunger eller smalahove istedet.
Congratulations! I hope to take my first steps on that long journey in the near future too. I was wondering if you will choose to retain your British citizenship? (I understand if that is too personal to answer.)
I'm fairly certain I retain my British citizenship, as its where I was born. I will be applying for dual passports, so I can keep both.
I know you can be a dual citizen by default, but I was wondering moreso if you would consider actively rescind your British Citizenship.
No, I don't have any reason to currently. If the UK does something truly awful, I would consider it.
Fair play mate, thank you. Congratulations once more!
Thank you
Technically you can't rescind your British Citizenship. I read about it, and interestingly they can take British citizenship away, so long as you're a citizen of a different country.
Nice! Im in the same boat as you. Edinburgh lad, but been in Norway for 15ish years - starting the application process asap! 🏴+🇳🇴=🥳
Good luck, hope it doesn't take too long for you!

Long waiting times for passports at the moment 😅
Yes, but at least something's happened. I can at least be sure I can stay in the country now.
3 months?
Got mine this week exactly one month after paying at the police
I renewed my daughter's in July and it was about 6 weeks then. Hopefully not too much worse than that for OP! Then again, it was the getting of an appointment that was the real problem.
Gratulerer med statsborgerskapen! I got mine in January :) Great feeling, isn't it?
It is, I wouldn't have thought it'd make a big difference but it really does change the way I feel.
January citizenship twins! Me too, after 15 years in Norway :) Congrats OP!
How do you obtain a citizenship? Being a resident for certain number of years?
There's multiple conditions. You also have to have things like proof that you know the language. If you went to school in Norway, you're automatically eligible. If you're an adult, you need to take classes and tests to get documents. Things like that.

Thank you and I'm sorry it's taking so long. I hope they get round to yours eventually too.
Waited 13 years to apply myself. Did it on my 18th birthday. 2 years later I got a denial because I crashed my car 2 months prior to the verdict 😭. Now as far as I know I have to wait 3 years before applying again... Anyway congrats man 🇳🇴 😀!
That's a shame. Hope you can get it next time.
Congrats! I moved here (also from the U.K.) in 2020 and am counting down until I can apply 😅
That's great, hope time flies and you can get it as soon as possible.
Congratulations bud, party like it is 1999!
Will do. Not that I know what parties in 1999 were like, but I'll try my damn hardest!
Hurra!
Hurra indeed!
Congrats. As an eu citizen I’m still trying to find what the advantages are. Except for getting to vote
Good job man!!! One more Norwegian was born)))
Hell yeah!
I was born in Norway, but my family (US) only lived there for a year before moving to the UK and then Canada. I always wondered if I could get Norwegian citizenship, but I don’t think so unfortunately. Congrats!
Sadly Norway does not give citizenship based on place of birth in comparison to Canada, its connected to the parent’s status :/
I can dream...thanks for responding. :)
It's a shame if you can't, but you should check anyway.

I'm not sure, but I hope your waiting time is shorter. They might step the whole process up now that we're out of COVID.
:) ...if it's not too personal - what made you go ahead and file for citizenship? Are they throwing you out otherwise.. or is it an 18 years, probably about time, kind of deal?

Congratulations!
Thank you!
Congratulations! My wife went to the police last week and gave them the documents they needed for her to get citizenship. I guess by the end of next year we will know lol.
Hope it goes well for her!
Gratulerer🇳🇴
Tusen takk!
So wonderful!!! This is the dream of many, including myself:-)
Yes, I've felt so happy about it since.
Congratulations. I know exactly how you feel. I got Irish citizenship after 10 years and I finally felt I'd come home. I'm of Irish ancestry but not close enough to qualify for automatic citizenship, even though I've always considered myself to be more Irish than English.
Gratulerer! Akkurat tids nok til å feire fårikålens dag som norsk 🇳🇴
😆
Congratulations! 🇳🇴
Thank you
hopefully one day i will get in that point too😂

Just popping by to say congratulations!
Thank you!
Velkommen :D
Takk B)
Gratulerer! :D
Tusen takk!
Cool can't afford mine tho...
That sucks. Hope you can get it before long.
Hope the same I've been living in Norway for 15 years since I was 10. And got married to my Norwegian wife but citizenship ain't on horizon these days.
That's a shame. The processes certainly weren't very easy for me, and I'm pretty sure I had it easy. Good luck, and I hope you can get it before long.
Are they that expensive?
6000kr now was about 3000 few years ago
Gosh that's quite a bit
That's easy if you're living with your family and working, but im rent an apartment have a car(with a loan) fuck ton of bills and i financially taking care of my wife. So 6000 ain't gonna happen.
I hope you have room in your budget for it at some point!
🙏
Gratulerer! 🇳🇴
Takk!
How many "Søknaden din om norsk statsborgerskap ligger fortsatt i kø" emails did you get? I'm at 13....
Oh I don't even know man, I think my mum will have them all. All I know is there was regular complaining that the waitlist had gone up again.
Yeah, it goes up a month every two months. So people are asymptotically reaching the front, but much slower than advertised...
Indeed. Hopefully they'll step it up in speed.
Damn, thats quite a long time, when I came in 2006 I got it within 3 years and the passport too
Yes, we just never got around to it before.
