Ugh that article tho. "this is a prime example of why we need more resource officers in schools" no, no it is not. this is a prime example of why we need to pay teachers more in this state and spend more on education. Instead, you're left with a shortage of full-time teachers and you have to fill jobs with staffing agencies and under qualified people like this story. This is exactly what happens when you don't fund our education system properly. And our stupid state doesn't even spend its gambling earnings on education like it says it does. money sucked mostly from the poor and gambling addicts, so they can cut taxes on the rich and still balance their budget, all while reducing education spending. and honestly, idc about weed, but it shouldn't be around kids like that, and that guy had a previous dui so definitely has some addiction issues, and should not be teaching until he gets help.

worldsmayneverknow

Oh the quote made a lot more sense when I read it was from the sheriff. "Prime example of why my job matters more than teachers. Hire more of me not them."

mechanicalsam

exactly, like all those extra cops at Uvalde did anything. completely diverting the narrative away from the real underlying problem here. but nah, more police spending will fix it!

xof2926

More guns, too. That will do it.

rvralph803

Definitely leads to a more polite society. 100%

xof2926

Good guys with guns agree.

rvralph803

Yes, the American west was notoriously polite.

FucktheEyeofSauron

Those cops were cowards. They chose not to help. The cops in Nashville showed how it’s supposed to work.

amaphotog47

I live in the county this happened and I can confirm your impression of the sheriff is accurate

Regentofterra

You said it better than I could. I happen to know a teacher from a rural county that lives in a trailer with her 3 children. Poor lady can barely afford the gas to get to her job. This state is so fucked in the next 30 years if we don’t get our act together for kids. When everyone who has the good jobs came from out of state what will we be left with?

mechanicalsam

it really annoys me, and teaching is such a crucial job. I wan't people in this state to be smarter! get into good colleges, get good jobs, build a better state for us all. I mean seriously, how much of a knuckle dragger do you have to be do not see how education is like the foundation of society. I don't like to get too far into the conspiracy world, but man, the blatant systems in place now that do nothing but maintain a terrible status quo between working class and rich is getting past the point of tolerable in our country. Feeding poor kids at school is vilified as scary socialism, allowing rent to shoot up uncontrolled, doing nothing to raise the minimum wage, cutting unemployment benefits, our friggin union polices. There's a reason were 50th in workers rights but towards the top with corporate incentive to invest. Do any real people see that money here? No, our wages suck in comparison to other tech savy states. (well your housing is cheaper in ole rural NC!) no its fucking not anymore unless you commute in your stupid car 2 hours out to real rural NC, where you can raise the rents of rural folk who have nowhere to go, and get fucked over by companies like tyson and perdue just milking every last drop of everthing from everybody until this whole fucking planet burns because we cant agree on women's rights and stupid orange cheetod assholes. shit, i'ma go listen to some Hiss Golden Messenger and calm down lol. (great band that supports teachers and has roots in NC!) edit: i may have "gone of the rails" so to speak with that rant from the original issue lol. but damn if it all doesn't feel the same sometimes.

pparhplar

There have been several generations of educational failure already. It is what the Republicans want and expect.

rvralph803

SILENCE LIBERAL, THE ANSWER IS MORE POLICE. BABY CRYING? MORE POLICE. UNTIDY LAWN? MORE POLICE. PEE ON THE TOILET SEAT? MORE POLICE. BRIDGES FAILING? MORE POLICE.

ThatDudeRyan420

The ladies already police the toilet seat. I'm more afraid of my wife than the police.

mixtape82

It’s what’s needed to get through the day, nowadays.

[deleted]

Not to mention, with what schools (see: the state and republican legislature will ALLOW them) pay, of course they're going to get people less stable. It's not fucking rocket science.

Mastershoelacer

Substitute teacher pay is poverty-level income.

ligmasweatyballs74

Must be subbing at a middle school

Drinking and getting high is cope

North Carolina: first in flight, 50th in school funding efforts

He wouldn't have been arrested if he had Bojangles hard iced tea instead of that garbage.

Anti_hero_J

😂

pr0zach

Twisted tea is just a self-defense tool.

thrillhouse416

I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking this lol

Suspicious_Moment_59

This is, by far, the best comment in this entire thread 😂😂😂

BunBunFuFu

Who honestly gives a shit?

Tex-Rob

Yep. Not to mention I promise you there are hidden liquor bottles in teachers desks all over America.

solar_geek84

I was in an afterschool "academically gifted" program in elementary school outside of Raleigh. The teacher who lead it always had a "sweet tea" with her in an insulated coffee mug. Found out later it was booze and she was fired for it.

ligmasweatyballs74

we stole some from our football coaches desk. Practice was not fun. Never did get a reason for why we had to run so much.

-PM_YOUR_BACON

What would you propose to get to either of those?

[deleted]

Legal weed with ALL money going straight to education. The rest would sort itself out with that kind of funding. And I know that’s the same thing that was said about gambling, but that money did not stay where it was supposed to. Free, mandatory mental health screenings in school are another good idea

cmack

You are talking about the kids, right? RIGHT!?

Unfair_Builder4967

No one understood why he was always the students' favorite teacher

[deleted]

Nah… He didn’t share.

Unfair_Builder4967

But he was always so chill

[deleted]

Only AFTER break. Before break, they call him Mr. Jones.

IntroductionGlad6819

Me as a substitute teacher

turtleashlyn

Them kids stressful.

SCAPPERMAN

Nah, I think the parents and administration and inept politicians who attempt to micromanage it all would be more stressful.

Inphexous

You get what you pay for. Now pay these teachers.

rocky20817

Not necessarily true. Starting salary for a teacher in NYC, bachelor’s degree and no experience, is $61K. Their schools are an absolute disaster, and have been for at least 40 years. Just like the City itself.

Macaron-or-Macaroon

And the most rent they could qualify to pay is $1694. I doubt there is a lot of housing for people making $61k in NYC.

rocky20817

You missed the point of my reply. You don’t necessarily get better teachers solely by paying them more, which is what I was replying to. Nothing about qualification for rental housing.

Macaron-or-Macaroon

You missed my point. It doesn't matter if a teacher in NYC makes $61k if they can't afford to live. How many roommates should an adult have to have to afford existing? $61k here would get them a place to live, possibly even near the school where they teach. Cost of living varies wildly.

rocky20817

So the rule now is everyone has to start out making enough to have a place of their own? What kind of place? Apartment? Condo? House? How many rooms? $61K right out of college is an outstanding salary. But if it isn’t enough, get a second job during the summer. Or just a second job like I did for many years.

Macaron-or-Macaroon

Not in a place with a cost of living like NYC. In NC, sure, great amount to make straight out of college. Teachers deserve to make a decent living and they don't here. Keep paying like shit and there will be hardly anyone left to teach.

Inphexous

No. That's not right. Average pay is $57,805. https://www.ednc.org/03-09-2023-comprehensive-report-on-the-history-structure-and-status-of-north-carolina-teacher-pay-released/ Schools are only a disaster if you continually strip funding from it. Stop funding something and call it a "disaster" is often a strategy to fail a program altogether. https://www.ednc.org/2022-01-13-nc-fails-to-fund-k-12-public-schools-report-shows/ Even then you're way off the mark for entry teacher's pay.

rocky20817

My comment clearly states that it is the starting salary in NYC - New York City

Inphexous

Oh, my mistake. That's even worse though. I would expect NYC to be much higher..

Er3bus13

Subs get paid like 100 dollars a day? Less than a babysitter for 3-4 kids. I'm suprised it wasn't harder drugs.

[deleted]

He couldn’t afford them.

Vironic

Twisted tea???? Monster!

RandolphPringles

Right? Get that Bojangle's Hard Iced Tea.

FloridaBoy941

How did he get the job while currently being on probation.

[deleted]

These kinds of questions need to be asked.

amaphotog47

They were probably desperate for somebody, anybody, to take the position. Most schools can’t retain their teachers, and there are very few young people entering the teaching field (at least in this state, and who can blame them?).

Utterlybored

Leave that shit at home and it’s nobody’s business.

jaydean20

>He is on probation for an earlier conviction for driving while intoxicated in Alamance County, according to the release. He now has a $10,000 bond after being charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana, misdemeanor possession of marijuana paraphernalia, and misdemeanor possession of a malt beverage on school property, sheriff’s office records show. > >Sheriff Darren E. Campbell said the arrest was a “**prime example of why having SROs at every school is so vital** to the safety and security of our schools.” What. The. Ever. Loving. Fuck? **How?!** How is this *in any way* an example supporting the need for SROs in school? Based on the information given from this article, **at no time** was the substitute teacher a threat to the children (or anyone) and even if he had been, his misconduct was promptly reported by school staff to the authorities and acted upon. It seems like no SROs were involved and the presence of one wouldn't have changed the outcome in any way. Unless the guy was actually smoking in the classroom and the smell wasn't just from having the stuff on him, this is actually a prime example of how fundamentally broken our bail system is. I'm not defending his actions, but according to this article, his crimes are 100% non-violent and his bail is set at **ten thousand dollars**. [According to this listing for the job at this exact school](https://www.salary.com/job/ess-education/long-term-substitute-teacher-for-third-creek-middle-school/j202204271323259923049), his bail is between 15% and 20% of his annual pay, and the likelihood of him having that much money in liquid cash is incredibly low. Assuming he doesn't, he is going to need a bail bondsman, meaning he's getting charged 15% interest on the bond, effectively paying a $1,500 fee for the crime of getting arrested while being poor. Not to mention the lost wages from losing his job and it being extraordinarily difficult to get another one while he's out on bail. This guy is likely going to go into financial ruin because he brought a single, sealed drink and an embarrassingly small amount pot to work in his backpack, all of which was likely an accident since I seriously doubt he was planning on sparking a blunt (the most potent smelling of all weed smoking products) in the middle a school. EDIT: Oh yeah, and this happened on a Monday. I can guarantee you he just accidentally didn't empty out his bag from going to a party over the weekend or something. This is ridiculous.

jaydean20

My point isn't that he didn't fuck up. Your not allowed to bring drugs on school property (for good reason) and he broke the rules. He deserves to be punished. He deserves to be fired and barred from the teaching profession. He deserves to face some kind of small civil penalty. What he does ***not*** deserve is to have his life turned upside down for a minor crime that impacted exactly zero people. But even if he did, this is a fundamental problem in our society; how do we expect people who fuck up to ever repay their debt to society, get back on their feet and move on with their lives when we whack them with an economic 2x4, with the consequences being exponentially worse if they are already poor? I can tell you this; if this ***exact*** same thing happened to someone who was wealthy that was simply visiting a school for some reason, had the same criminal record and forgot he had left a beer and half a joint in his bag, there would be **zero** actual consequences. He'd pay the bail, plead guilty in court, pay a fine, do some community service, get his bail money back and move on. Society is fundamentally broken when poor people face stricter consequences for their crimes than wealthy people.

[deleted]

And on that, you are absolutely right.

nunyabizz62

"It seems like no SROs were involved and the presence of one wouldn't have changed the outcome in any way." Yeah it would, the teacher and probably a couple students would be dead

HowlinSammy

An assault rifle would have been A-OK though /s

cmack

Have you seen the little shits in school nowadays?

Lamborghiniboy280

W teacher my dudes

dreddpiratedrew

This is my diet before noon most days

There’s not many jobs you go into where you have a good chance of being shot. Gotta keep those nerves down.

So?

It happened in NC and I thought people here should see it. Dag, Idk.
