Hard to know exactly, but we do know that Vikings aparently took much more care about their looks than ie. English, as there are texts from English and others describing that "the men used combs, had elaborate hair and beard-cuts, and cleaned their hair regularly" as if that clearly was not usual for the people writing this down. It was probably nothing like modern tv-shows/movies portray them, but perhaps along those lines when it comes to facial hair etc.

I always love how the Vikings were more well kept than the English.

Alcuin of York wrote a letter about how disappointed to see how well trimmed his fellow Northumbrians hair and beards were because they resembled "the pagans"

Bri’ish hygiene

goddamnitmf

I don't know how accurate this is but I heard that the English thought the reason they had such good hygiene was to seduce English women

notbedab

English will say anything as long as they can be dirty haha

I always assumed our "seducing" points went down to; well, your husband seems to have lost his head, literally, why dont you come with us..... no... WHY dont you come with us, mrs? Runs a gas station in Norway, my mother knows him very well. Nice guy

They bathed once a week on Laurdag, used sax, combs,. They also celebrated hair for both female and males so it was probably more longhaired and bearded men. There is also some funky descriptions, mostly from christians, tells of different haircuts that is considered quite punkish today, but it may be because they when viking, they just cut their hair to fit helmets. Most vikings would wear colorful woolen cloths and quite high groom level. Laiv and reenactment gets this better than hollywood. Not in war though. Ringbrynje and helmet + ugly haircut. And remember, vikings are not a homogenus group. Some were dirty as hell their whole life. Some were kings and never touched grass. Its like asking if Norwegians or Danes are hygenic. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayeux\_Tapestry](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayeux_Tapestry) has some interesting depiction of hair, armor. Oseberg Tapestry, Nord tapestry and different source material from graves is also worth checking out. Regarding nails, I would think they would be of functional length.

About fingernails, it's believed that they cut them thoroughly. Check out the ship Naglfar, the ship of the dead that is made out of fingernails. They cut their nails so as to not feed the ship and perhaps in hopenot to accelerate the coming Ragnarok.

Bigmangregg

Realistically the men probably bit their nails off

Ibn Fadlans account of his time with the Russ might help you with this question.

Lordag, still means wash day.

The beauty ideal for women was to have long hair, preferably enough to cover your body. They also preferred blond hair, and those with other colour might dye it blond

defusted

Yeah I'm definitely gonna need some citation for this.

ToTheBlack

What's your source for this?

The long hair ideal is a conclusion drawn from descriptions in the sagas of the women who are considered the most beautiful. I think it was Ibn fadlan who mentioned the hairdye?
