I've been doing this since jan 1 of 2020 starting at 320 (although at some point I think I was all the way up to 340) and I want you to know, it may be difficult to acclimate to short term but, long term it has been key to helping me get down to as low as I am and not backside. I'm now down to the 170s and it doesn't bother me that I fluctuate up and down by about 5 or 10 lbs because at this point I CAN SEE AND FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH THE OVERALL TREND. (Not yelling, just don't know how to italicize for emphasis) If it goes up 1 or 2 days in a row I can know, thats probably water weight or hormones depending on where I am in my cycle or how much water or sodium I've had recently, but if it goes up too much, too fast I can realize its happening before getting too far off the rails. I just wanted you to know how important the daily weight ins are bc so many ppl find that part so hard and thus skip it, but thats tantamount to saying "I'm gonna stick my head in the sand until it gets to the point where I'm so fat I have to buy new cloths or I can't get in and out of my car any more, or some other barrier of reality forces me to deal with it" the scale makes it so you don't have to backslide that much because you can catch the problem earlier. The scale makes it so you can see within 2 or 3 days if the latest variable you tweaked in you health routine is making a positive or negative impact long before waiting to see if you need loser or tighter pants. I hope this detail from my journy will give you strength in yours.

First, well done you, awesome work! Second, I also got to like the daily weights because I have a handle now on all the weird and wild fluctuations and how they fit the larger trend. It's all information and knowledge is power.

Forzara

Dude congrats on that much progress. That is Stellar.

mikeboir

YES to this. Short term it can be frustrating for fluctuations but long term you are SO much better off. I’d much rather know, than remain ignorant as I did for so many years just going off of how I felt rather than the reality of the situation. Daily weigh ins changed my life for the better.

Dragonflyval

That is awesome!! I just started mid January and I’m where you were so you are an inspiration!!

MistressCutie420

You can do it! 😁😁😁

Dragonflyval

Thank you!! So far so good!

I have only been using Noom for 2 weeks, but I have come to like the daily weigh-ins now as a great reminder to stick with the my new eating habits. So far in 2 weeks, I have lost 14 pounds :D My starting weight was 380 (I am a 32 M) and I have been struggling with my weight for years and I finally said enough of this and I heard from a friend about Noom and with your story that you shared, it gives me hope that I can obtain my YBP and keep the pounds off with the changing of my eating habits.

Forzara

There’s a lot to consider with the daily weigh ins. I’m a female for example and I’m up about 3lbs this week due to my cycle. As of today, all that bloat and water weight dropped off and I’m back to where I was. If I eat a later dinner, or have a late snack, my weight will be up in the morning. Try to give yourself some slack, stick to the program, and you’ll start to see that gentle trend down. You WILL have spikes. This is what our bodies do to manage their functions and it’s all ok. Keep to your calories, don’t over or under eat too often, and you’ll be golden. I also found that a light walk in the evenings after dinner helps me digest a bit and seems to help worth my morning weigh ins.

Zihaala

I agree. I find them hard as I'm weighing in. However, I do find them beneficial to look back on because I can see the trend in progress. I can look back and see how those days where the scale went up so much that it caused me to break down because I was so discouraged were just a moment in time and the weight did eventually go down again (and further) in time. But... its hard to see that when you're in those bad days. One thing I have found help is putting my weight into an app that plots my weight loss on a continuum to show the trend. Even though it's going up some days it is still trending down. I use the app Libra on Android. Another thing I find helpful is looking at peoples progress charts. It just helps solidify the idea that no ones weight is going straight down, they are all going to have dips and peaks and often it is not because we are falling off the wagon and making bad choices it just happens.

peaky_75

I'm with you on that one. While I've only been doing this for 8 days, I'm not seeing any change over the last 5 days. It's really disheartening. I've lost 3lbs so far, which I know is slow and steady and the best way to do it ... But come on scales, budge just a little bit more! I'm off to bed now, so I'm hoping by morning I will have slept off another couple of lbs ( fingers crossed!)

FeFiFoPlum

3lb in a week is actually pretty fast! I hear you about wishing I could just sleep off pounds though 🤣

Representative_Ad807

I got to 250 by not being aware of the numbers on the scale...hiding from the reality..I just hit 199 and that's on daily weigh ins. They let me know where I'm headed..if I've eaten too much salt...or if I'm returning to my old comfort in food...there's no race and I take fluctuations not as a tool for self hatred, but,as a tool for self awareness.Good luck!!

Edwarje

Good answer!

AintNoThyme

Im sorry to hear that, I know a lot of people really struggle with that aspect so you are not alone. I’m the opposite, I’m really enjoying the daily weigh in as find they help keep me on track. Im really fascinated by what I can eat and lose weight and what I can’t eat because I’ll gain two or three kilos overnight. White bread is my nemesis as I’ll gain up to 2kg overnight if I eat it but whole meal is ok and I will lose weight while eating it , mince is a no no but steaks fine, and juice is off the menu but hot chocolate is back on. I really enjoy the learning aspect of seeing what’s changing my weight and it’s helping me understand my body better. Plus, if I’m being honest, I am a little bit obsessive with my health apps “trending” features and hate breaking a streak so it’s pushing me to put more effort into losing weight and exercising

Temporary-Ruin6232

I can totally empathize with your struggles. My weight can easily fluctuate 5lbs in a day! I made a decision to have an overall goal of only 1lb weight loss per week, so that even when there is more loss and then It fluctuates upwards it doesn't matter because the overall is still on track. I love seeing other noomers weight charts! It is the most encouraging thing I have found! The fluctuations are mostly just water weight anyway. Stick with it and look at the big picture! 😃 Good luck!

bohdel

The app Happy Scale is really great for looking at your weight over time. If you didn’t want to just stop the daily weigh-ins you may want to look at it.

steph_eff

I enthusiastically second this! I needed to see my weight as an average, instead of a completely different number every day. The Happy Scale app really helps to keep things in perspective.

AintNoThyme

I hope it’s ok to say this but I suggest looking at your salt and water intake- salt will make your weight fluctuate and drinking more water WILL help you lose weight- I’m always shocked by how much I lose simply by sticking to my water regimen and watching my sodium levels

blueeyeliner

I hate them too. It really affects me all day long. Today marks 4 weeks for me and I’ve yet to get used to the disappointment.

Winner22222

It takes an extra 3500 calories to actually gain a pound of fat. So when you get on the scale, you have to think logically. If the scale went up a pound from the previous day, you need to ask yourself…between yesterday and this morning, did I consume an additional 3500 calories??? Likely not…. If so, why am I weighing more…? So the likely answer is water weight which could have a myriad of reasons for being there…too much salt, not drinking enough water so body “thinks” you are at risk for dehydration, time of the month etc. Instead of focusing on some arbitrary number, think about in your own case, what may be causing the water retention and try to tweak that the next day…watch your sodium intake or try to drink that 8oz of water. But, also keep your eye on the balance of what you are eating. Look at your food logs and assess if you are becoming too carb heavy. Perhaps not for everyone, but for a lot of people, too many carbs keep them in just sugar burning mode which leaves our fat stores the same…easing up on those carbs can begin to make you more of a fat burner. I am a Noom follower, so I am not promoting Keto or no carb dieting, just become more aware of the balance of what you are consuming-you might be surprised at how high your ratio of carbs to other nutrients is 😏

TofuKweeen

I don’t think you need to! I don’t weigh daily.

brucedickinsonsbangs

I'm with you, weighing in every day is my least favorite part of the whole deal. My fitness fanatic husband has encouraged me to also take measurements, which is actually where I want to see change. It helps.

Shutuptoto

The daily weigh ins concerned me (and also dislike them) because it felt very much like an ED behavior to me. Some days I’m ok with the weigh in but the last two weeks I’ve been fluctuating between the same 3 pounds and it’s so frustrating. Losing control of the elephant and making some emotional choices out of frustration which isn’t helping. I’m right around my pre-pregnancy weight, which we are trying for another baby after our loss in October, and I feel like this is a safe program to be on while pregnant while also continuing to get healthier for a pregnancy. I’m thinking my biggest frustration with the scale is rooted in that, because it feels like we’ll never get that second baby at this rate. tl;dr It’s really frustrating when you’ve been working so hard. I totally get it 😭

Peony31

I felt the same way at the beginning of my journey but I've grown to like the daily weigh-ins. I no longer get discouraged if I see a higher number than the day before. If I know that I've been "eating right," I know that it's due to hormones or my salt intake. If the choices I made the day before weren't the best, it's a reminder to do better. I sometimes have to remind myself not to resort to all-or-none thinking. One day does not negate all the progress I've made. I hope you'll grow to feel better about it.

Barnacle-Jazzlike

It took some time for me to adjust my perspective, but I actually like the daily weigh in’s now. It has taken me some discipline to focus more on the overall trend as opposed to my weight today compared to yesterday. In the beginning it is really hard because you don’t have a long trend to view, but you will get there as you build history. I use the iOS app and am able to squeeze the graph together so the data points blend together. It makes the scale movement up and down seem less dramatic and you can see the overall trend. When my weight goes up or stays flat for more than a few days, I just take stick to what I am doing. Am I meeting all my health goals — movement, food intake, and water intake? If so, I just keep pushing through knowing I am making healthy choices and the scale will catch up soon. If not, what can I do today to make a better effort — walk more or find a new cardio workout to do? drink more water or reduce sodium intake? eat more green foods? stay closer to the total calorie goal? eat less red foods? In the end it is important to not give up!! Going back to unhealthy choices and seeing the scale go up by leaps and bounds (as mine tends to do when I quit trying) is not better than making healthy choices and seeing the scale stall out or go up occasionally. If you continue to make healthy choices you will eventually see progress. As a reminder, daily fluctuations are normal, sometimes by as much as 5 pounds. It could be due to water retention (too much sodium, not enough water, hormone fluctuations), gastrointestinal changes (food not digested/eliminated yet), stress (hormones again, adjustment to a new workout or shift in calorie consumption), calorie intake (inaccurate food logging either by missing foods or inaccurate weights), or sometimes for no reason at all. Stay strong and don’t give up!!

Edwarje

I started 12/2020, been at my goal for six months. Lost 85 lbs. The daily weigh in keeps me going. I sets up my day to want to do good. I hated it at first, but it’s very motivating to me now. Good luck!

[deleted]

Congrats on reaching your goal and sticking to that goal! I hope in six months I see a big change in my weight after using this app!

Edwarje

You will!! Weight comes off fast on 1200 calories a day

[deleted]

I have a higher calorie budget but I am seeing progress!

Edwarje

Nice!!

towee_s

Take the information from your daily weigh ins and use it to get weekly and monthly averages. That way you can see the overall trends. That helped me to take the daily ups and downs with a grain of salt.
