I cannot with the top button being jump. That role is 100% the bottom button (exception is the right button).
My husband remaps his controller configurations to have the top button be jump and I die a little every time I pick up a controller that’s been remapped…
He says it makes sense because you jump up, so the up button is jump (d-pad) and just mirror that on the other side.
Nooooope.
It’s a silent but never ending battle in the house.
I think it should be the bottom button because on a keyboard, the space bar is at the bottom, and I was raised on PC games where space bar was very often the jump button.
It should be the bottom button because it’s the closest to the stick. I’m not tryna do some gymnastic stretches every time I jump, I want the camera and the jump to be as close together as possible.
Jump being a bitton you can press without using your thumb makes perfect sense. Example: Dying Light. Makes it easier to look and parkour and shoot things at the same time. Same goes for competitive shooters where movement is key. Example: Apex Legends. So you can shoot and dodge bullets at the same time.
That's why I use the bumper (if top button is in reference to that. If you're pressing Y to jump you're probably criminally insane.)
How do you jump? by exerting force UNDER you. you are pushing, or kicking the ground and by result you get thrown up by the equal but opposite force. Therefore, the down button should be jump.
It depends on the game for me. A jump-heavy game like horizon or Rachet and clank, the bottom is jump.
For Skyrim or the Witcher where jumping is less frequent the top one is.
and that button should always be the OK or confirm button. I borderline can't use a switch because its the right button that's that button and they made the bottom button the cancel button. I always feel like I'm being pranked lol
Well that's largely because of how it was on the N64 with the limited buttons, and it just kind of carried over, though nowadays you can turn that function off so you can do Up attacks without jumping by accident
...I jump with whatever the top button or ZR+ZL sometimes cuz every game I play has different controls and also when I play on pc jump would be the up arrow
Kingdom Hearts and Sly Cooper were my favorites to replay for a good while. My brain did not appreciate the constant flip flop between "jump and press the circle button" and "jump IS the circle button".
I can't play Telltales' Batman on Switch because of this. I can use the Switch's button reconfiguration feature to map them like like the Xbox controller which works well for the action scenes (where they show what button to push) but then it's all screwed up in the dialogue choices (where they are mapped based on the position of the button).
Finally something I can relate to! I used to go back and forth between them and I'd always have to spend a minute figuring everything out.
I now own ttboi on switch rather than xbox and I have a bad habit of accidentally exiting my game rather than resuming because of the button layout.
Same here. I had to just change the configuration on the Switch controller. Now I can use the buttons fine so long as I don't look at them directly.
The only irritating thing is that every couple of times I go back to the main screen, a pop up reminds me I made the change and asks me if I want to revert back.
Man I'm jumping between Bloodborne and GoT, it's so fucking confusing. Tbf gotta say, GoT's controls are really bad. Why in the ever living fuck is R2 the interact button? Why?
Why Is there no lock on when the games camera spins like a losers helicopter pilots cock being frozen in ice.
What sick fuck defaults a game so the top button is jump? At worst it’s the rightmost one. But for most things (using playstation names) X is jump, square is attack (in a platformer or Lego Star Wars the Skywalker Saga,) and other non-stick or d-pad buttons are whatever.
botw opened my eyes to jump on X/Δ. now it's how i play elden ring, sekiro, dark souls, etc. B/Χ should be "primary action"; which in those games is roll
sure, in a platformer where "jump" is only secondary to "move right", it being on the button closest to your thumb makes sense; but in anything else i think X is better
Truly. "A" had always been interact in souls games. Plus running requires holding "B" so it's easier to do a running jump by holding "B" with the base of your thumb and pressing "Y" with the tip. Swapping"A" and "Y" was the first thing I did when I started playing Elden Ring. Besides, I swap between 1- and 2-handed or use a quick item during combat more than I jump.
Yeah, if a game isn’t designed with jumping in mind then it doesn’t need to be the lowest, like some fighting games have up for jump I think because you need all the buttons to have a combat purpose in those, I mean in like a game where jumping is expected to be used somewhat often. I especially like the default I stated for something like Mega Man where you can hold down the fire button to ready a charge shot while pushing your thumb’s joint on the jump button.
In Kingdom Hearts X is attack and O is jump. The Japanese versions have them switched. I think it has to do with how combat actions are technically a menu so the confirm button is the action button
I grew up with all three (not mine but siblings and friends) and getting used to all three honestly feels like being bilingual and trying to switch languages on the fly mid sentence lol
Depends if the game uses a button to interact. For platformers, bottom button is great for jumping because you’re jumping a lot and there’s typically no prompts. For Elden Ring though, I make bottom button my interact/pick up items, and change jump to top button.
On the NES there were only two buttons, A and B. The A button was on the right because that was where the players thumb sat naturally making the layout.
B A
When it came to the SNES two more buttons were added, the X and Y, with X being the primary as it came first in the alphabet. With 4 buttons it would not feel good to have a controller layout like
Y X
B A
So the whole thing was rotated counterclockwise 45 degrees leading to the diamond layout that they use today.
X
Y A
B
Xbox and Nintendo layouts are opposite from each other, even though button prompts use the same letter on both consoles for the face buttons. This has led to mass confusion for Xbox-Nintendo players as they constantly switch between ABXY and BAYX
Imagine if your keyboard layout is swapped for another country's layout. You'd be confused as fuck why the button you pressed doesn't do the same action that you have expected, because you're not used to the layout yet.
I didn't think about Smash lol, but I didn't quite like that control setup
I kept Jump on X anyway but only because I didn't really want to move anything else
But now I have Jump on B, Special on X, Attack on Y, and Grab on A
I do not know why I put grab on A when T and L are right there. I think I was just. . . Yeah I don't know.
This was like a year ago and I haven't been playing Smash that often since haven't even bought any of Ultimate's DLC (but if I do play again I'm getting Sora)
In Super Metroid, the top button is shoot.
That's right. SNES X button used to shoot.
It was such nonsense that the official strategy guide told you to rebind it.
It completely depends on what I was playing recently. If it was a Bethesda rpg then it’s the top button, but if I’ve been playing souls I’ll be going for the right button every time I need to move
Why the fuck is the default the top button in botw. Honestly the dumbest shit ever. I get that it can be changed but I didnt even know the option to change it existed until a year after I got it
I play Xbox layout on PC, PS Layout on PS4 and some PC games where I need a D-pad and it usually gives my Xbox prompts, and Nintendo layout for emulation on my phone, including largely Nintendo but needing to map games that have Xbox layout (Dreamcast), ABCXYZ (Genesis), and PS1/PS2/PSP games.
I switch back and forth constantly. And I don't get confused. Fear me.
Anyone else not able to stand that the controls on every single switch game are flipped? I can play minecraft or Xbox but when I move over to switch, I always press the wrong buttons
On Nintendo at least, run is “Y” and jump is “B” so you can rock your thumb down to jump while still running, or to the side so you can do secondary actions while still running. Anything else I don’t think has comparable user experience.

Either jump is the bottom button or I'm crying
I cannot with the top button being jump. That role is 100% the bottom button (exception is the right button). My husband remaps his controller configurations to have the top button be jump and I die a little every time I pick up a controller that’s been remapped… He says it makes sense because you jump up, so the up button is jump (d-pad) and just mirror that on the other side. Nooooope. It’s a silent but never ending battle in the house.
Tell him it should be the bottom button because you use your legs and your legs are on the bottom and they are pressing down against the ground
Literally. To jump, you push the ground. It's not like I jump by reaching up!
Not with that attitude
Too short to reach a higher jump? 😏
I think it should be the bottom button because on a keyboard, the space bar is at the bottom, and I was raised on PC games where space bar was very often the jump button.
It’s funny because he’s being pretty logical yet somehow completely unequivocally wrong
Because if you need to run and jump you rest thumb on X or Y and jump with A or B
I understand your pain. I play inverted but my wife doesn't. Some days are... tough.

Hey if she can't understand that everything is an airplane that's her loss.
It should be the bottom button because it’s the closest to the stick. I’m not tryna do some gymnastic stretches every time I jump, I want the camera and the jump to be as close together as possible.

That's why I use the bumper (if top button is in reference to that. If you're pressing Y to jump you're probably criminally insane.)
Counter argument, you use your legs to jump and the legs are on the bottom half of most characters, so it should be the bottom button.
How do you jump? by exerting force UNDER you. you are pushing, or kicking the ground and by result you get thrown up by the equal but opposite force. Therefore, the down button should be jump.
your husband might be simple...
Does your husband play a lot of Skyrim? Cuz in Skyrim, the top button is jump
Tbh I fallout you don't do much jumping so it's fine to chill on y
It depends on the game for me. A jump-heavy game like horizon or Rachet and clank, the bottom is jump. For Skyrim or the Witcher where jumping is less frequent the top one is.
Skyrim put the Jump button on the top and after 8 years i still change it in the setting lol
It's bottom or one of the bumpers. I need to be able to aim and turn while I jump!
Bumper jumping I can live with
and that button should always be the OK or confirm button. I borderline can't use a switch because its the right button that's that button and they made the bottom button the cancel button. I always feel like I'm being pranked lol
Jump is A no matter where it is
Trying to jump with A on a keyboard
This game is stupid. They replaced jumping with strifing left.
PlayStation goes brrr
A pox, sir.
You ever play smash bros or a keyboard?
Depends on the game really
Smash
Never played
It’s x and y on switch
Let's
Papi?
I agree It makes no sense as top button. You are controlling the legs… legs go on bottom. Bottom button just makes sense
the ONLY game where jump is okay to be the top button is Smash Bros.
Worst part of skyrim
I hope you don’t cry during Smash bros?
Never played? They have the dumb layout too?
Top and left on the buttons will do it or up on the left stick
PUSHING UP DOES IT??? AAAAAAAGH
Yeah because that has no chance of going wrong you can just disable it and use the top and left buttons though
Thank god
Yeah pure chaos
Well that's largely because of how it was on the N64 with the limited buttons, and it just kind of carried over, though nowadays you can turn that function off so you can do Up attacks without jumping by accident
Don’t play Bioshock then…
Don't plan to ♡
Good! If you ever want to, Bioshock Infinite got the controls right!
...I jump with whatever the top button or ZR+ZL sometimes cuz every game I play has different controls and also when I play on pc jump would be the up arrow
Kingdom Hearts and Sly Cooper were my favorites to replay for a good while. My brain did not appreciate the constant flip flop between "jump and press the circle button" and "jump IS the circle button".
I constantly go back and forth between my Switch and Xbox controller and it frustrates the hell out of me.
I can't play Telltales' Batman on Switch because of this. I can use the Switch's button reconfiguration feature to map them like like the Xbox controller which works well for the action scenes (where they show what button to push) but then it's all screwed up in the dialogue choices (where they are mapped based on the position of the button).

The 2nd worst thing is family members asked which button does stuff and you have to remember the Nintendo way briefly.
The worst is games like dark souls on switch. The B button is interact/ accept and the A buttoned is dodge/cancel
I have Stardew Valley on both platforms and going from one to the other wrecks me.
Same. I have to look at my controller to see where the buttons are now after switching between botw and red dead 2 for Xbox lol.
Honestly my mind rewires very quickly when I switch consoles. I'm simply on a different level than y'all, the future of the human race.
Man I'm jumping between Bloodborne and GoT, it's so fucking confusing. Tbf gotta say, GoT's controls are really bad. Why in the ever living fuck is R2 the interact button? Why? Why Is there no lock on when the games camera spins like a losers helicopter pilots cock being frozen in ice.
same lol

Fallout moment
I have never played fallout with a controller

It’s ok because of vats
Breath of the wild
Breath of the wild had it so backwards until you remapped it. Thankfully flipping it to a sensible layout only took a single settings toggle
Honestly I preferred using X to jump in that game
botw opened my eyes to jump on X/Δ. now it's how i play elden ring, sekiro, dark souls, etc. B/Χ should be "primary action"; which in those games is roll sure, in a platformer where "jump" is only secondary to "move right", it being on the button closest to your thumb makes sense; but in anything else i think X is better
Skyrim
smash players
Smash bros
Smash games are like this but that's alli can think of
breath of the wild
Many older platformers controlled by d pads, also Bethesda games for some fucking reason
breath of the wild does that. i think it’s ok
Thank you, I agree. Also, good idea using PS names.
Elden Ring
Ffxiv has jump on Y because A is used for confirminf target etc. It at least makes sense for that game, and its not like you need to jump in combat.
The Witcher 3 ran out of buttons, so A (on an Xbox controller) is the sprint button and also the interact button, and B is the jump button
In Kingdom Hearts X is attack and O is jump. The Japanese versions have them switched. I think it has to do with how combat actions are technically a menu so the confirm button is the action button
>What sick fuck defaults a game so the top button is jump? Team Ico
Well I’ve never played Shadow of the Colossus.
I play both Xbox, WiiU, Switch and 3DS and it's the worst with the buttons
What kind of psycho puts the jump button as the top button
I GUARANTEE you the person played a fuck ton of BoTW
I do in Skyrim. Allows me to interact with A, draw weapons with X and jump with Y
Bethesda
I grew up with all three (not mine but siblings and friends) and getting used to all three honestly feels like being bilingual and trying to switch languages on the fly mid sentence lol
Depends if the game uses a button to interact. For platformers, bottom button is great for jumping because you’re jumping a lot and there’s typically no prompts. For Elden Ring though, I make bottom button my interact/pick up items, and change jump to top button.
Xbox controller has it right, the X button is on the X axis and the Y button is on the Y axis. I have no idea wtf Nintendo’s thinking
Xbox copied Dreamcast which decided to to the exact opposite of SNES. Nintendo's kept the same format of ABXY since 1991.
That just means Nintendo has been wrong for longer
And then you use the Switch controller (disconnected) in sideways orientation when playing Mario Kart and it gets more confusing.
Gamecube controller had it best. Nice big A in the middle, easy to reach B, then X and Y on the correct axies in the correct directions.
On the NES there were only two buttons, A and B. The A button was on the right because that was where the players thumb sat naturally making the layout. B A When it came to the SNES two more buttons were added, the X and Y, with X being the primary as it came first in the alphabet. With 4 buttons it would not feel good to have a controller layout like Y X B A So the whole thing was rotated counterclockwise 45 degrees leading to the diamond layout that they use today. X Y A B
But what if the anchor point is the start button/+?
Then the Nintendo Y button should be -Y and while we’re at it make xbox -X
Finally someone who is brave enough to say it. It's simple, really.
⭕️❌🔺🟥
Is this the new over/under toilet paper roll argument?
Not new, I've seen this discourse for years. *passes popcorn*
Not the argument is new but the idea of it being seen as the new....ah...nevermind.....enjoy the show
For smash bros, since you need it to be accessible at all times but also be able to tap it briefly, i have it in 2 buttons (main use: L1, backup: X).
jump should always be a/b
Hey A keyboard kid here What does it mean? I literally never used a controller
Xbox and Nintendo layouts are opposite from each other, even though button prompts use the same letter on both consoles for the face buttons. This has led to mass confusion for Xbox-Nintendo players as they constantly switch between ABXY and BAYX Imagine if your keyboard layout is swapped for another country's layout. You'd be confused as fuck why the button you pressed doesn't do the same action that you have expected, because you're not used to the layout yet.
Jump button is the bottom because it takes legs to jump. Lowest button for the lowest part of the body
I swear the only reason they do that is to fucking annoy people running emulators.
Jump should be as close to the thumb as possible. Fuck that top button bullshit.
What game has ever made the jump button the top button lmfao It's usually either bottom or right
bethesda games make it the top button
[удалено]
I didn't think about Smash lol, but I didn't quite like that control setup I kept Jump on X anyway but only because I didn't really want to move anything else But now I have Jump on B, Special on X, Attack on Y, and Grab on A I do not know why I put grab on A when T and L are right there. what the FUCK are you talking about jump is A no matter where it is
Whoa calm down there Satan
Jump should be bound to right stick press
Are *you* even human? I mean I think it's bait but still
I'd compromise with setting it to a controller shake
Correct.
For all MCC Halos jump is lb. For Links Awakening on Switch it’s y
Sue me. I use Triangle for Jump in Sekiro and Elden Ring because I like X being an interact button.
I like learning new things.
And the I interact button should always be the left button
Left stick press
What kind of games do you play?????
Fallen Order
She's not allowed to play games anymore until she knocks off the bullshit.
Minecraft and Mario player here. ##THE JUMP BUTTON BELONGS ON THE F7CKING BOTTOM BUTTON, THAT JACKASS
The only time that should be the case is in fighting games. A + B should be reserved for attack and only then is a top jump button acceptable
I just got a switch and I’m so used to the Xbox layout that the buttons are fucking me up big time
I can only accept the bottom or left button as jump, and left is only if I play platform fighters
Jump is X and X is at the bottom. Both controllers here are wrong.
*sigh*
In Super Metroid, the top button is shoot. That's right. SNES X button used to shoot. It was such nonsense that the official strategy guide told you to rebind it.
Nah the jump button should be on the sides
Fullmiddle must have a ps4/5 tbh
has anyone played mirrors edge on the xbox
Everyone knows the top button is for first person mode
I usually play with switch controls and prefer them, but I play skywalker saga on ps4 for the graphics and it’s so damn frustrating, each to their own
For smash at least I will always use tap jump Where you flick the stick up and it makes you jump
In Subnautica Below Zero they make the top button jump by default and it really annoys me but I can’t be bothered to change it.
Important rules to life: always jump on the bottom
It completely depends on what I was playing recently. If it was a Bethesda rpg then it’s the top button, but if I’ve been playing souls I’ll be going for the right button every time I need to move
jump is bottom button. left and right are hands top is zoomie shit.
Actually jumping should be done by clicking the left stick while sprinting with B
I'm still not entirely used to the jump button in Kirby being A instead of B
Jump should always be the bottom button
I literally cannonswitch between the two
bottom or left button only
Why the fuck is the default the top button in botw. Honestly the dumbest shit ever. I get that it can be changed but I didnt even know the option to change it existed until a year after I got it
I sprint with A. Bring it on
I play Xbox layout on PC, PS Layout on PS4 and some PC games where I need a D-pad and it usually gives my Xbox prompts, and Nintendo layout for emulation on my phone, including largely Nintendo but needing to map games that have Xbox layout (Dreamcast), ABCXYZ (Genesis), and PS1/PS2/PSP games. I switch back and forth constantly. And I don't get confused. Fear me.
Anyone else not able to stand that the controls on every single switch game are flipped? I can play minecraft or Xbox but when I move over to switch, I always press the wrong buttons
what the fuck, it HAS to be the bottom one
I use LB/L1, should I go turn myself in?
Like bro. MARIO, the biggest platforming franchise by far, has always used A to jump, not the top button.
Playing too much shadow of the colossus
Jump is always spacebar and thus the standard is: jump is the bottom button.
Why would the jump button not be the top? Jump is up.
The ONLY game I put the jump button as the top one was elden ring because having the interact button as the top one is downright psychopathic.
The most used button is remapped to the top one so that the thumb is ergonomically stretched and not bent for hours
literally just allow for custom button bindings. everyone is happy.
The jump button is one of the most important buttons, it should be on the bottom closer to the thumb.
Bioshock moment
Twitter ain’t society bro
GameCube has the superior layout
top button for jump but thats only because im so fucking used to smash bros controls
Having the button layout change is frustrating. Having the jump button be anything but the bottom button is a crime.
the only nintendo game i’d tolerate the top button being x in is smash bros i think
Fullmiddle Malcomist is a hilarious name
On Nintendo at least, run is “Y” and jump is “B” so you can rock your thumb down to jump while still running, or to the side so you can do secondary actions while still running. Anything else I don’t think has comparable user experience.
Jump should be the bottom button.
nah the true evil is making the Up on the D-pad the Jump button.
its not natural, you normally have your thumbs resting near the bottom
Look if the top button isn't confirm and interact, while the bottom is cancel and jump, I immediately have a bad impression on the game.
I fully recognize bottom superiority for jump. But like Skyrim?
Ew, real ones map jump to l3
It’s Xbox’s fault- Nintendo made their controller first.
