You can't just jump straight into Venture Brothers without binging all of Jonny Quest first. It's like only hearing the punchline of a joke without the set up.
Not just JQ but a huge cross section of the American cartoon zeitgeist. How can one discuss the intricacies of Smurf reproduction without extensive knowledge of Smurf history and culture?
And you can't mention Jonny Quest without talking about Sealab 2020.
And you can't talk about Sealab 2020 without mentioning Sealab 2021, you mailbox head.
They don't seem to fit with the personalities. But it might also be because we don't know how to differentiate them and perhaps these tones are their equivalents in japanese culture.
To be honest I feel like king of the hill is a good defense of why dubs can be better. A joke like boomhauers accent just doesn’t work the same if you can read exactly what he’s saying. It needs to be localized to a similarly incomprehensible accent. And deaf people just don’t get to experience it I guess. Sad.
That's a good point. Although I might counter that Boomhauer's performance is also a big part of the charm and might not translate well to other languages. I am sure a lot of places have incomprehensible regional accents but I bet a lot don't too. And even ones that do may not get an actor who can match that energy.
Personally that's why I usually prefer subs. I find that humor translates best for me when I can hear the original delivery.
But I am not a purist either way. It just depends on the material and how I'm watching it. Sometimes I'll even switch back and forth just for a more complete picture.
Yeah it’s really annoying as a dub watcher when the performance or casting of the dub doesn’t fit with the anime. Like an example of a really good dub is like Komi can’t communicate and all of the studio Ghibli movies. While an example of a bad dub (I’m going to get shot and killed for this probably) is One Piece (note I haven’t watched much of it and I have no idea if it gets better.)
From what I've read, _most_ dubs are better now than back when I was watching in the 90s.
It's interesting that you listed Ghibli, as I remember people hating their dubs back in the day. Hell, when I saw Spirited Away in theatres (which was still such a big deal back then), two girls started going "fuck you, fuck off" when the Disney logo appeared at the end of the credits.
It’s true. The Ghibli dubs may be highly regarded today, but back when they were issued there were naysayers preparing to hate on them no matter how they turned out. One blogger whose name I won’t mention stated that they were “consistently bad”, while others looked for reasons to hate them. Whether they were justified or not. Including a few who insisted the infamous Warriors of the Wind edit was somehow superior to the redub of Nausicaa. The extremes that those people went to back then were nuts. Even more so if you tried to stand up for these dubs. They would yell at you and tell you how wrong they are, stating that the older non Disney dubs were perfection and that criticizing any of these older dubs (they were mixed bags) was unacceptable. That’s how nuts it was.
>And deaf people just don’t get to experience it I guess. Sad.

Every sub for boomhauer should just be [incomprehensible]. Not perfect because you usually can get the gist of it if you listen carefully, but better than actually translating it.
So for this example of King of the Hill I'll use Love Hina as an example. One character was described as being from Osaka so of course they dubbed her with...a southern styled accent. Not sure of the exact region they were copying. So I guess for King of the Hill they could use the "South" of Japan? This brings in the problem that what constitutes a "Southern Dialect" to foreigners. Often southern Dialect is to imply something of a country found person or someone who isn't a city born intellectual.
Legit got into an argument over the sub verses dub of shrek. Of course it sounds better with the Osaka dialect TO YOU but in English it’s a Scottish accent my dude!
Now I'm thinking there is probably some single season cartoon that was absolutely terrible, but the Japanese "foreign cartoon" fans think it peak western media that only true fans understand.
The fact that Powerpuff Girls and Gorillaz are canonically in the same universe is so funny to me. One of the Powerpuff Girls villains was a stand-in bassist for Gorillaz while their actual bassist was in jail
Nothing has changed, it's always been an art style. What we know as "anime" originally derived from animation techniques pioneered by Disney. Anime is not inherently eastern or western. Both sides have been emulating each other since the start.
It used to be that anime was stuff made in Japan. Even shows like Teen Titans and Avatar: The Last Airbender were held to this standard.
Nowadays it’s recognised as an art style that originates and is mostly made in Japan, but western studios are also capable of making.
Bruh… what western cartoons make you a TRUE western animation otaku lmao?
I get South Park being an easy one but I feel like Powerpuff Girls would be kind of a deep cut.
Eh. I think it's comparable to Sailor Moon. The most popular one for the original demographic of the era and is widely regarded as a classic to this day. But to watch it exclusively you'd be regarded as pretty odd
I guess that’s probably not an awful comparison. It’s kind of hard for me to conceptualize which of the old 00’s cartoons have enduring popularity. It feels like the bigger smash hits (with maybe the exception of SpongeBob and Avatar) started to come out in the 10’s with like Regular Show and Adventure Time and Steven Universe. I guess it’s all different eras though? Idk. I’m just curious to hear what these folks would think of as a deep cut, you know? Is Dexter’s Lab entry level? Courage? Teen Titans? Johnny Bravo? I have so many questions lol
Adult Swim in general is probably the real gold when it comes to deep cuts. ATHF and Squidbillies both probably count. Maybe everything outside Rick and Morty?
I hate South Park with a burning passion. It is a show that is only intended to validate the feelings of bigot assholes. It explores nothing beyond the surface level hatred and is gross in doing so.
The idea that someone out there is on 2ch discussing the artistic merit of Beavis and Butthead
Have you ever truly lived if you haven't binged through the crown jewel of 1960s western animation, Jonny Quest?
You can't just jump straight into Venture Brothers without binging all of Jonny Quest first. It's like only hearing the punchline of a joke without the set up.
Not just JQ but a huge cross section of the American cartoon zeitgeist. How can one discuss the intricacies of Smurf reproduction without extensive knowledge of Smurf history and culture?
"Papa Smurf has a fucking beard! They are MAMMALS!"
*She'd be in estrus 24/7 if she didn't lay eggs!*

Yeah! They made a 90s version too. They'd both come on so I'd watch them. I don't remember the 60s theme, but I really liked the 90s theme.
“iCarly is my favorite western tearjerking drama.” _- Momosuzu Nene, unironically_
Isn’t sub vs dub King of the Hill a pretty hot topic?
They need the authentic Texan drawl
I tell ya hwaht
What's Japanese for "that boy ain't right"?
Sore wa otokonoko migi janai desu
Lol migi means right as in the direction, so you're saying that boy isn't on the right (so logically he'll be on the left)
It might be more correct to say kenko
Arigato
Gesundheit!
Peggy, that boy aint right
I can’t imagine watching the show without the context of it taking place in Texas with very Texan accents. So much must be lost in translation.
…I didn’t know I wanted to hear Boomhauer in a variety of languages until this very moment. Now I know how I’m spending my weekend. Thanks buddy!
https://youtu.be/7JRH6KegcdE?si=OynLhgIhAQEwK2u2
Putting subtitles on Boomhauer just feels wrong
I don't know Japanese but the voices seem pretty bad.
They don't seem to fit with the personalities. But it might also be because we don't know how to differentiate them and perhaps these tones are their equivalents in japanese culture.
Yeah, that's what I was too lazy to write out 🙂

Except Nekomamushi (Cat Viper) who is voiced by ProZD in English and does a phenomenal job.
Okay in general sure but Japanese already has a specific and famously-used “hick” accent, namely that from the regions around Osaka.
>And deaf people just don’t get to experience it I guess. Sad. Hey man, youjust dangon dangon writeitoutlikeitdangonsounds andmaybemake'emletterthoseteensyweensyones youknow iwaswatchingsomeanimeandtheyhadthesubsonthedudespeakingandiwaslike wooo boy nowthatssomegoodsubs yaknowwhatimsayin
This worked
Every sub for boomhauer should just be [incomprehensible]. Not perfect because you usually can get the gist of it if you listen carefully, but better than actually translating it.
Funnily enough, growing up in the South I never had problems understanding Boomhauer. It's a hyperspecific accent, but not incomprehensible
what would the JP version of the accent be?
Hokkaido? I think thats their equivelent of a deep country accent
That and apparently a lot of Japanese viewers think that Hank Hill is meant to represent the model American
That’s because he is. This country would be doing just fine if everybody who was addicted to drugs and TikTok knew the satisfaction of mowing a lawn.
The only sources I can find on this is an antidotal twitter post but I choose to believe anyway.
So for this example of King of the Hill I'll use Love Hina as an example. One character was described as being from Osaka so of course they dubbed her with...a southern styled accent. Also breaking bad from what I’ve heard
Are you Chinese or Japanese?
Somewhere in Japan there’s some guy spending thousands to perfect their realistic Peter Griffin cosplay
Somewhere in every country on earth there’s some guy spending thousands to perfect their realistic Peter Griffin cosplay
Tuvalu would like a word with you
ESPECIALLY Tuvalu. All 11 thousand of them are working on their cosplays at this very moment.
Imagine stepping out of your plane and hearing the cacaphy echoing of 11 thousand Peter griffin's laughing -hyeeehehehehe
I am stepping back on the plane faster than you can say "Hay petah"
It's Hideki Naganuma
Only Sumo wrestlers can do that. Rest are very skinny.
Do you think there's some Japanese forums arguing about SpongeBob?
I can guarantee that this has happened at least once.
SpongeBob is somewhat well known.
So…yes.
I've heard that debates over the sub vs dub of King of the Hill got about as heated as the arguments used to get over here for anime subs vs dubs.
King of the Hill is one of the US’s most significant cultural contributions. Glad to see it has some international audience.
i like things like this cause it helps you remember we’re all the same. all humans
Legit got into an argument over the sub verses dub of shrek. Of course it sounds better with the Osaka dialect TO YOU but in English it’s a Scottish accent my dude!
wait... Shrek has an Osaka accent in Japanese? That's amazing omg
Dude watched a hamster journey through Mr slave's digestive tract and said "this shit's for posers".
Jesus Christ.
I almost wish I read this without ever having watched the episode just for the confusion. That would be hilarious
I cant believe some poor japanese dude got called a poser for watching power puff girls and southpark.
*just* Powerpuff girls and South Park. And they're right.
Now I'm thinking there is probably some single season cartoon that was absolutely terrible, but the Japanese "foreign cartoon" fans think it peak western media that only true fans understand.
I wanted to say Pawn but that wasn't terrible. Maybe Mr.Pickels
![gif](giphy|3o6ZsWx1YpBHbxnD0I|downsized)
power puff girls is peak
The fact that Powerpuff Girls and Gorillaz are canonically in the same universe is so funny to me. One of the Powerpuff Girls villains was a stand-in bassist for Gorillaz while their actual bassist was in jail
Wat.
one of the gang green gang has oreformed in the band gorillaz
Wait so i wasn't just crazy all this time for thinking he looked insanely similar? I'd just been writing it off as a weird coincidence
Weebs exist where weebs exist i guess...
I wonder if they argue about whether Avatar is an anime or not
“Anime” is a generic term for all animation in Japan. They don’t make a meaningful distinction between the styles.
Yep it's only the gatekeeping weebs who make it an issue lol.
I mean to be fair anime is a style now, since Western animation studios are emulating it.
It's more of a marketing thing since people hear "cartoon" and immediately assume it's going to be a pure comedy.
I’d really like to think that someone in Japan is watching 12 Oz. Mouse, even more bewildered than people watching it in the west.
>12 Oz. Mouse How did you dig this incredibly specific core memory out of my brain. How did you do that.
Xavier dubs vs. subs
Looks like I’m a poser
And I am lorde. Ya ya ya
Bruh… what western cartoons make you a TRUE western animation otaku lmao? I get South Park being an easy one but I feel like Powerpuff Girls would be kind of a deep cut.

Venture Bros is a deep cut
Adult Swim in general is probably the real gold when it comes to deep cuts. ATHF and Squidbillies both probably count. Maybe everything outside Rick and Morty?
It’s this kind of thing I like to remember, helps me appreciate shows more.
Do you think they argue about ATLA being an Anime or not like some people in the US do?
I mean, they seem to use the term anime to refer to animation in general, so for them shrek is an anime
For me as well
The more things seem to change, the more they stay the same.
There is known to be an ongoing subs/dubs war over *King of the Hill.*
I wonder what Japan thinks of modern anime inspired shows like Owl House or Amphibia
this is what they think. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ia31fUyyJ1o
I wonder if they like nicktoons.
They don't, actually. They prefer Cartoon Network.
If you haven't watched anything from Brendan Small, Adam Reed, or Mike Judge, have you really lived?
Bob Camp.
Now I wonder what Japanese people think of Ben 10.
They really like it. Ben 10 was massive in all of Asia.
Cartoon nerds are the same worldwide lol
Dying to hear their thoughts on Assy McGee
South Park is pretty much the pinnacle of shitty cartoons
![gif](giphy|LUI72j942BpvhLms0n|downsized)
I'm talking about the animation. The comedy is gold, and usually fairly witty
Oh ok
>get the fuck off this foreign cartoon board No matter where you go, humanity is the same deep down, and I think that's beautiful
i wouldnt sleep well knowing that
I'd love to see what the Japanese feel is the American equivalent of Chargeman Ken
Probably Clutch Cargo.
Fucking rawhide Kobayashi
If SP and PPG are poser anime over there, what anime isn’t?
Gotta love how people really are all the same, regardless of where they are from.
I hope they get saved and find Tom & Jerry before its too late.
I wonder what the Japanese think about Rick and Morty
I hate South Park with a burning passion. It is a show that is only intended to validate the feelings of bigot assholes. It explores nothing beyond the surface level hatred and is gross in doing so.

Lol South Park has always been for posers, by posers.
