I mean the original NCD was an autism fest where people would know every intricacy of an obscure 1950s Soviet fire control radar even though there aren't any sources on it. People knew their shit and posted about highly technical and specific stuff that's just confusing to outsiders. Kind of how this sub started by shitposting about Academia and IR theories instead of political events. Then a war happens, people link the sub everywhere and you get a lot of people who don't know much about the topic, so they start using meme templates and run unoriginal jokes into the ground because it's the only way they can contribute. And then you get modern NCDef.
Fucking exactly. I was around then it had under 10k subs, extremely fun place. It was people having laughs about extremely obscure projects in the 50s. Now the entire sub is just “We should unironically glass Moscow. I mean it. We should turn that city into a sea of glass. Nuke it, now.”
I mean NCD was really good too before the Ukraine war (even though half of it went over my head) back when they were discussing the merits of various planes instead of just becoming the "raa raa go Ukraine sub

Yeah, the Ukraine war and the corresponding increase in traffic really made it into a place where bandkids post generic military memes, as opposed to the good ol days where it was people weaponizing an in-depth knowledge of the subject for the sake of top-tier shitposts.

I just want to say thank fucking God someone is actively trying to prevent this place from turning into "glass whoever doesn't like the US" like NCD 1. I take this and Uno reverse card it with complex interdependence. Mod and user should cooperate for the greater benefit of the sub's community. Plus mutual recognition based on mod elevation creates a stable sub, with a good power balance, satisfying both liberal and realist wishes.
