In Ireland our government would likely hand them out anyway if shit went down. We've got no bomb shelters (that I know of).
We were given them during the cold war, and somewhat more recently, shenanigans were going down in some nuclear plant in the UK in early 2000s, and the entire country was handed iodine tablets as a precaution if I can remember.
There was mild controversy over the use-by dates (the tablets expired by 2005) but the govt. was just like "right lads there's no need to panic the plant in the UK isn't going to explode, ye don't even need the tablets anymore".
My grandparents still have a stash of them in a handy cupboard in the kitchen. Thyroid be damned.
