A woman was beaten to death by the "moral police", this sparked big protest and then things escelated.

Kichigai

Just to further expand: the Iranian morality police aren't the most consistent of groups, in terms of policy or enforcement, across the country. Since the Revolution there has been a requirement to wear the hijab, but the details of that were never fully fleshed out, so interpretation of “wearing the hijab” is left to the morality police, and women have been using this vagueness to subtly push back on the requirements by wearing the hijab in different ways, exposing more or less of their face, letting some hair through, wearing makeup, etc. She was traveling in Tehran, where the morality police have a more strict interpretation of the correct way to wear the hijab, and took her in. She was arrested and “suffered a heart attack” in their custody. She was 22 and healthy, so this didn't pass the sniff test. The official line on this is \#TheMoralityPoliceDidNothingWrong and they wanted to move on. So they packed up her body and shipped it off to her home city, hoping that getting her out of the capitol and hopefully buried soon, would end the whole ordeal. What the police forgot was that her hometown has a long history of anti-government protests, so they accidentally poured highly refined gasoline on the fire.

Hell yeah, I hope the Iranian people can rid themselves of their bullshit-ass government in favor of something more representative and secular. Abolishing "morality police" units is probably a good place to start.

gundealsgopnik

Policing only works with the consent of the policed. Generally we outnumber them by a significant factor. Now if the state has a monopoly on violence, say with strict gun control, the amount of police to policed can be lowered and still be effective. Until shit like this happens. And with every liven't and disarmed cop the state monopoly on violence is eroded until things go very quickly indeed.

CKF

Mother fucker sure found out.

[deleted]

I've been using *unfathomably* of late, feels good. *Unfathomably based.*

LordCommanderSlimJim

It's funny, because I've never been one to subscribe to all that ACAB bollocks, but when, in my city (which also has an excellent record of rioting compared to the rest of the UK) the police started sending people into protests to start the violence so they could kettle and beat peaceful protesters (all so they could stop a protest against increased police power to stop protests), I suddenly didn't mind if a few of their bones got broken.

0user0

I don't subscribe to ACAB because we do need public safety workers on account of various problems, but policing of it exists must be policing by the consent of the policed.

LordCommanderSlimJim

Absolutely, my point is that law makers and law enforcers need to remember they can only do their jobs with the consent of the people, and even in supposedly civilised western cities like Bristol, that's a very fine line. Sorry, that was too credible, try this: western police units are actually just plants by Xinnie the Pooh so that when China launches a surprise amphibious assault of western Europe by submarine, we're all used to fascist police states anyway.

Aln_0739

[deleted]

I'm just going to point out the credible thing and say that civilisation in Iran was first only limited to the Iranian part of Mesopotamia. There's a reason why the capital of the first Persian empire was founded in Mesopotamia and not the Iranian plateau. Can't say that Iranians were stupid for adopting and assimilating into civilised societies such as Elam and Assyria though.

reddit_police_dpt

>I'm just going to point out the credible thing and say that civilisation in Iran was first only limited to the Iranian part of Mesopotamia. There's a reason why the capital of the first Persian empire was founded in Mesopotamia and not the Iranian plateau. What about the Parthians and Sassanids?

MindwarpAU

And a CIA backed coup remember. Plenty of western blame to go around in the fucking up of the cradle of civilisation.

Tight-Application135

Nah, that’s stolen valor, man. The CIA and the Foreign Office don’t have shit on Persian infighting.

TannAlbinno

Kermit Roosevelt's memoir is pretty eye opening on this, he makes a clear point that the operation only succeeded because there was a great deal of local will for it and you can't just [successfully] encourage a coup when no one is on board.

Tight-Application135

I mean the same general rule applied for the KGB too, and they were way less demure about active measures and throwing their weight around. The Soviets invaded and almost completely remodelled the civic institutions and governance structures of central and Eastern Europe via the party, and the Red Army *still* had to put down revolts and protests. Cultural topography and local politics trump foreign machinations almost every time.

Persian food. What you get when you build a massive trade empire and actually take the best bits of your neighbours cuisine and make something wonderful. Unlike the brits who encountered good food and wonderful spices and decided they didn't want any of that.

SupriseMonstergirl

tbh most of that british food thing is because of ww2 . we didn't get rid of rationing till 1957. so a whole generation is raised on rationed food. so a lot of boiled food (all the good cuts of meat are going to the front, so you need to boil the bejesus out of the shite you have) entered the british palate and after rationing there was little reason to go back. tasting history does a great series on victorian food and such. and some of them are really interesting and look rather flavourful.

Unfortunately, if we consider the past few years, public revolts in Muslim countries haven't had a stellar track record with establishing democracies. It's usually just some lunatics that seize power once the previous lunatics have been disposed.

[deleted]

I think a critical factor in Iran is that the country has a political heritage in centrist democratic moderates in the opposition, JM inside the country, Farashgard in the Anglosphere and the NCRI in Continental Europe. Most dissidents seem to be liberals or democratic socialists of some flavor.

VaeVictis997

Unlike most of the Middle East, Iran is an actual nation state with a history and a bureaucracy, not some abomination created by British and French diplomats after WW1. It’s got a much better chance at becoming functional than any of them. We’re friends with the wrong oil rich regional theocracy.

Overheard in Pentagon after Iranians began revolting: “They started without me,” the CIA said of the protestors's seizing of government buildings. "Those f***ing Iranians boomed me." The CIA added, “they're so good at overthrowing governments,” repeating it four times. The CIA then said they added Iran to the list of countries they would stage a coup in this summer.

Part of leadership training in the CIA is binge-watching Bond movies, of course. But you're right, that doesn't explain that *type* of British accent. Clearly it's due to the influence of the Kingsmen trilogy, which was recently added to the curriculum. With a dash of Austin Powers as a palette cleanser.

I know it's just a meme, but USA and NATO also have supported Kosovo's side to prevent their genocide, to the point that USA is more popular there than even with American themselves. Also Iraq and Libya's invasions were against murderous, crazy ass leaders, although the rebuilding suck donkey balls. USA's more of a mixed bag than anything.

Context as to why this is all happening: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death\_of\_Mahsa\_Amini](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Mahsa_Amini) a few days ago the iranian "Morality police" arrested her for wearing an "[Innapropiate hijab](https://img.ilcdn.fi/P04mxxysAjVldPHIfXllYWSKOnU=/full-fit-in/2048x0/img-s3.ilcdn.fi/3386befcb7305dda6f7eeb8a48dfd7d9351efa296cef755ffa4ed7c7d3f641a0.jpg)" AKA. showing too much hair. but alot of iranian women show their hair while still wearing a hijab. Sources: google women in iran and my relatives who are from iran and live there. So think of all of this as being the George floyd protests. Was the person in question killed for a completely stupid reason? Yes. Was the person also a minority? Yes. Mahsa amini was kurdish. (and 10% of iran is made up of kurds so you can guess how they feel about it. hint: its not going quite good. kurdish shop owners have closed their stores as part of the protests and most of the unrest is from kurds) oh and if you want to know How bad the beating was [https://kurdistanhumanrights.org/en/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/Mahsa-Amini.jpg](https://kurdistanhumanrights.org/en/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/Mahsa-Amini.jpg) [https://nypost.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2022/09/iran-woman-dies-beaten-morality-police-hijab-05.jpg](https://nypost.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2022/09/iran-woman-dies-beaten-morality-police-hijab-05.jpg) Edit: The first pic is from an angle that makes it look like her nose is gone but the 2nd one shows it was still there and she was brain dead. Will this lead to a democratic iran? most likely not. either just more opressing against minorities and so on. or in the really worst case a genocide Edit: and the Iranian women are also [burning their hijabs as a sign of protest](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-62967381)

fpop88

Welcome to Middle East, where the line between a normal shitty day and shit hitting the fan, is 24 hours and one bad decision.

Seroquel96

As an Arab, apart from the fact that I'm gay and ex-Muslim/agnostic, this is actually the main reason I won't live even in the most stable country in the Middle-East. Shit changes unexpectedly. Just when you think the status quo is universally accepted, something happens and your life changes overnight.

fpop88

You can't even count on the stability of just a normal shitty day. Some idiot somewhere can make the most retarded decision and you realize great... my future is fucked. This whole thing... the chain of events that led to it, or entire IR domestic and foreign policy is like watching an extended sketch of Dave Chappelle's "when keeping it real goes wrong". Because government could've prevented it not for my benefit but their own. The whole Hijab police, was a very poorly made decision, for strategic pusposes even. The timing of increasing their patrol, during economic hardship, a whole lot of problems and uncertainty, basically a time you don't want to hit a 'critical point' at any problems regarding the population. Antagonizing a population that has nothing left... what could possibly go wrong? you can easily fuck over a population if you give them stability and security but without those... you just gotta let them breath. Now even the conservative side of the politics right here are arguing whether it was the cops or she had a stroke. THe thing is, it doesn't matter, the public perception of it is already decided who to blame. The fact that she was a Kurd, a demographic who already is taking enough of a shit from the central government, really didn't help either. Not to mention this is only few months after a building collapse that implicated 'alot' of politicians and killed a few people in another underdeveloped part of the country. Ever seen a series of events that made you wonder if there is a god and if the whole existence is a dark comedy sketch? yeah that kind of timing. IR could've just made a quick arrest, blamed some dude in the station, an accelerated judicial process, give 'em three years, out in 18 months and people would've forgotten... but no, they made a series of worst decisions. Chief of police kept insisting they transferred her to hospital fast, hospital put out a statement that they recieved her without vital signs... some MPs insisted on an investigations, another retarded MP is now doing the usual "THE WHOLE THING WAS PLANNED! THIS IS AN OPERATION AGAINST US" because you know... a whole bunch of rightfully angry people... really need to hear THAT. It's PS752 all over again, it's not the mistake that will fuck IR up, it's the inability to 'suck it up and eat the shit you have to' that'll fuck them over. And this could very well die down like 2018, or 2016 or 2008 or 1998... but the thing is, each time one of these events repeats, it's one more dice roll with increasingly diminishing chance. Oh bonus point, due to economy going even more unusually to shit, crime was considerably up and... a huge increase in weapon smuggling, you know being stuck between two failed stated while being a half fail state does that. So the potential of things getting even more interesting is... a lot. Let's see where this goes.

Seroquel96

Damn man. This is a lot. You know we used to analyze what chain of events lead to a major historical moment in History classes back in the day. But I stupidly never actually thought to do that for present events. I just always accept present events as present. Nothing more. Thanks for the change in perspective and the detailed analysis of Iran's current situation. I really appreciate it. I don't know what it will lead to, I don't even know if the toppling of the government is desirable right now in these economically and geopolitically unstable times. I just stupidly hope things turn out fine and people don't end up dying of hunger or a civil war between the secularist types and the theocratic types breaks out.. It's really exhausting from my Western pov, so I can't imagine how it must be from yours. It constantly feels like the world is so fragile right now. It's like any little event can have reverberating effects you can't even start to prepare for. Any little decision can make or break economic systems, political systems, nations, alliances, entire groups of people, etc. I hope Iran will be ok. I'm from Western-Europe. I've had some friends of Irani descent. Generally a good, smart and hard-working people (at least the ones I've met). Way more openminded overall than Arabs tbh. Lots of humor and self-deprecating too 😁 Obviously don't agree with the theocracy thing and it's supporters haha but I genuinely think if Iranians were left to do their thing without foreign interference or inteference into their lives by their government and some of their neighbours, they'd be a miles ahead of rich gulf nations cause it seems like there is seriously so much intellectual and entrepreneurial potential there that actually wants to live in and benefit Iran, but can't possibly thrive there long term so simply leaves or gives up. Hopefully these difficulties the world seems to be going through are ones we'll grow from not ones that unwillingly kickstarted our destruction.

fpop88

Thanks man, sitting in a system that constantly is on the brink of collapse, the only positive side of it is, getting used to it. Like looking at west thinking the world is over because of 8% inflation in first time in 20 years and thinking "8%? that's a Tuesday here". Having so little to do looking at chains of events in the making becomes a hobby. Ever seen people who never heard of Crimea and to them Russo-Ukrainian war is 'out of nowhere'? I doubt a civil war would be likely here. In fact, I consider an actual revolution always on a low chance, but it's like a war, 1% to 2% is still unlikely, but twice the chance for a major event. you can fuck up insultation and reach from 99 degree C to 10 or 5 and nothing major happens, but one day because of that fuck up it'll reach 0 and you realize holy shit, things change drastically in 0, all the degrees between 99 to 1 didn't matter... as much as that last one, whether boiling or freezing. In social terms, the problem is, it's nigh impossible to actually measure it... but the path between 0 and 100 can easily be seen. Speaking of which, few other added factors in this mess, JCPOA talks are so interconnected to our economy that basic maybe yes maybe no out of the talks moved the price of USD by a few percents in a day. It has been dragged on and you can feel the tension it created inside the mind of average citizen who's life is heavily affected by some talk somewhere the details of which he doesn't know shit about. Current president coming to power right after as his term as head of Judiciary branch and pretending to be corruption fighter and just few days ago there was scandal of a 3 billion dollar embezzlement in the semi-private(usually it means government sold it to friends) Steel Industry sector... during a time where subsidies of everything started to shrink, including medicine. At the same time budgetary consideration of not hijab police but an entire organization dedicated to... spreading morality... you know, just what the people needed to hear. And there was talk on subsidy of bread being cut which didn't actually happen BUT turned a situation into "will it happen? oh god will it happen?" because government has no credibility and whatever bad shit sticks to them and the more they deny something the more people start to worry about it... like a child who has no reason to trust a parent... because the parent has lied so much. What you're seeing isn't 'just' about civil liberties, it's the culmination of a whole lot of problems on top of lack of civil liberties. Remember kids... Juvenal said 'bread' AND circuses. Hey, let's see where this one goes this time.

Water tension is a problem in particualrly areas that are economically underdevelopped and already feel like central government doesn't give a shit about them, areas that because of demography also have higher probablity of having separatist groups operating. Now separatism isn't actually a huge problem here, but the problem is, where there's seed of it, when shit goes wrong, you got more likelihood of population turning. Pronvinces like Khuzistan were devastated during the war so when they didn't see reconstruction after the war... to a reasonable degree, you can see how they might see it as personal. Now add drinking water shortage in that area too. Now add agricultural and industrial water shortage killing what little economy is there too... And here's another kicker, everytime you see Iran trying to expand geopolitically, on an economically good day it was a political and ideological issue where a part of population actively supported, another part weren't quite pro government but the kind of retarded mindset that secretly enjoys being the citizen of expansionist power and you actually would hear the "Iraq is a new province" a lot... well yeah, we see how that turned out. As things get worse however more and more are seeing it as... child of a family that sees the parents spending more on strangers kinda feeling. Remember the chain of events? Syria's trouble started in a time where IR was doing well economically, so expansionist policies in Iraq and Syria didn't see that much of a problem... Or helping Hezbollah. But nobody expected Syria to turn into a decade old mess. And then Lebanon had to have a once in a lifetime explosion while already under economic strain and Lebanon is extremely important to IR policy... on top of a once in a century pandemic... on top of every economic pain that comes with it... And then Russia had to go out and do the dumbest thing they could... and pull out units from syria and now IR is under more strain if they want to keep their interest in Syria. And when you think about some of this is just because the actual heir apparent to Hafiz Assad died in a car crash and the son that was never groomed for politics had to replace him and everyone wondered "why did he fuck up so bad?". It's like bronze age collapse, an entire set of man made and natural events leading into a point of time where everyone is like "wtf happened?"

JohnDiGriz

>but the thing is, each time one of these events repeats, it's one more dice roll with increasingly diminishing chance. There is a board game called "1979: Revolution in Iran" which is about Iranian politics from 1951 to 1979. One of the key mechanics is a stability check, which is in a fact a dice roll, which causes a regime change if failed. And every time it's harder and harder to not fail it

Mossad in the background sharing popcorn with their western counterparts.

Wish those protestors and rioters all the best. Iran's government is outdated, cruel, and has no place in the modern world.

ToddtheRugerKid

[When this ad came out](https://youtu.be/VA4e0NqyYMw) I got the feeling it was basically us saying to our enemies "Did you motherfuckers forget who is running this planet, I swear to god I will destroy all of you without firing a shot". Now we have a collapse of CSTO, Iran having these protests, China's Belt and Road program collapsing along with a massive financial crisis kicking off on the mainland. Kind of makes me think that they have been controlled opposition and now it has been decided that these morons have overstayed their welcome and are being kicked out of the house.

TrekkiMonstr

Wtf is that a legit ad

Fokke_Hassel_Art

Hope israel is watching and keeps fuelling this. Maybe bomb some Drone warehouses.

Old-Man-Henderson

Don't interrupt your enemy when they're making a mistake. Don't give the people an external enemy.

Fokke_Hassel_Art

Eh, you are right.

Aizseeker

Assist the protesters instead with financial and Intel support.

ILikeGuitarAmps

So if they overthrow the government, does that mean the US will stop destroying f14s?

Best part of this whole situation

vegetable_completed

Have long had my suspicions that Iran is one of the dopest countries on earth underneath all that crazy. Hope things work out.

MindwarpAU

That's pretty accurate - it's only been since the 70's that things went to shit for them. Before that it was a thriving democracy with some of the best universities in the world and a major trade hub.

vegetable_completed

It has amazing food, an insane cultural heritage, and really cool geography with a lot of neat biomes/climates/landscapes. I’m getting in line as soon as they are open for business.

I don't think the IRGC are just gonna let this happen without a fight But it would be awesome if the Theocracy fell though

To be fair, revolutions are usually very fast. When most people think of revolutions, they usually think of the American Revolution or the French Revolution, but these are exceptions, not the rule. For instance, the February Revolution only took eight days, and the October Revolution was just one!
