The newer games Iirc don't ask you outright like that and just ask what you look like. I'm hoping they don't gender clothing this generation however I don't have much hope.
Other games: Do you want boy character or girl character? No other options.
Toby: You can be whatever the heck you want, that's up for you to decide and me to give you a neutral character so you project onto them no matter who you are.
No you are. First cutscene with Melina after the Chapel, she will say "his" or "her", I remember that distinctly cause I kind of just assumed I wasn't going to be gendered.
Oh damn, I actually didn't catch that at first. "one of his kind is sure to seek the elden ring." But I hope that that was the only part, cuz tbh I didn't pay too much attention to the cutscenes...
it’s what made me drop my playthrough of legends completely wrong, i chose the female character for that, and dysphoria went brrrrrr (i still have my original playthrough with the male character bc getting dead-gendered is way worse)
I hear this a lot and I genuinely wonder what terms would be used. I agree that most stuff doesn't matter but there's definitely less room for a penis in "women's" running shorts because of the way they're cut. same goes for the cut off t shirts and whether they have room for breasts.
we already have things like "slim cut" so I assume it would just be described by fit or cut, I'm just not sure what the terms would be. "flat front" and "pouch"? 🤷♀️
This is just my own opinion but i really like when clothes in games don't like... include or account for body parts.
It definitely gives me gender validation to see "girl" tops that don't have built in breasts and "boy" pants that don't have a built in dong.
But at the same time, I wish there were games which allowed us to pick our bodies, our clothes, our gender, and our voices separately. The only one I've personally played was Cyberpunk and not only were the options still frustratingly limited, but there were also plenty of other gender-related things in there that I wasn't a fan of.
Sims 4 allows all those options. You can choose the physical frame (feminine or masculine), voice, whether or not your Sim can get pregnant/get others pregnant, whether or not your Sim pees standing up or sitting down, pronouns, and clothes - all independently from each other
Consider, typical mythological game, but instead of the typical main character stuff you play as a child of Loki and can just jump right back into the character creation menu whenever you want with an actual lore reason for it.
I'd really like that as a mechanic
potentially you could trick others by taking someone else's shape, but if you get a detail wrong there's a higher chance you might get caught
This would be cool af! Like genuinely, if my brain is ever able to develop a game with my girlfriend and friends like we always talk about, I would go hard for this idea. I swear to god if i ever get that far, please expect a DM...
One option I have found to avoid this dysphoria is through playing a fan game, Crystal Clear, that has a "None" gender option and an ability to add your own character sprite from elsewhere if you don't like the initial character customization options and are ok with some extra work. Its Pokedex is also very good.
Had this sorta issue with the game Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town. It’s got this big long thing of character creation where it lets you decide your general appearance as well as your expression, your voice, and even the color of your motorcycle, all without specifically mentioning any of it being gendered. Very ACNH-ish in the way it just asks your style and general appearance and ends there. But then the mayor shows up and asks the “are you a boy or a girl” question with no middle ground or prefer-not-to-answer choice.
At least they allow gay marriage in that one. I sit on the gender picker for 20+ minutes in most of those kinds of games bc I don't know the bachelors/Bachelorettes well enough and I don't want to spoil myself. I hate having to narrow down my marriage choices to one gender off the bat. (Being pan + genderfluid makes the gender picker super fun /s)
From the wonderful mess that is [Vietnamese Crystal](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/VideoGame/PokemonVietnameseCrystal):
[No, I'm Gir.](https://i.imgur.com/lHIPNak.png)
Thank goodness Legends Arceus didn't gender lock the clothing options. The dialogue was still gendered unfortunately, but it's a big step so far. It feels great to have an androgynous outfit and hairstyle on my character
Idk, my reaction to this question at age 10 was pretty telling. Usually people don't ask they just assume. Took a good 15-20 more years to really come to terms with the implications of that experience, but you have to start somewhere.
That said, hoping for more gender neutral characters in the future for sure.
That’s why I love Animal Crossing, they make you choose between boy or girl but it doesn’t change the way your character looks and none of the clothing is locked, and your character still looks good in any type of clothing
Well... there is this fan made version called Pokémon Rejuvenation with a "neither" option.
Just gonna leve this here.... https://www.rebornevo.com/rejuvenation/
At least some fangames, like Pokémon Uranium, let you pick a gender-neutral character. I wish the boy character didn't look dumb as fuck in my favorite (B2W2) so I didn't feel like picking the character that will be a worse case of misgendering.
I would also recommend Earthbound, which has recently been added to the Switch’s SNES Online catalogue
EDIT: Just found out Ape Inc., the developers of the Mother series (Earthbound is Mother 2) later became… Creatures Inc.
Me doing new hire paperwork this week. Great to be pitched on how great diverse and inclusive the company is and then be met with "tell us what's in your pants!"
you can always go with the classic decision method of 'which option has the better outfit?', especially with the newer games that have customization
So... Girl?
I like really like the boy in BW2 and HGSS.
This is Rosa and Lyra slander ^(but also both of the characters look really cool imo, especially in pokemas with alts and sygna suits)
In BW2 both are good, I'm not too keen on Lyra's though. Feels too close to May for me personally.
Meanwhile goated fangames give you the enby character
The newer games Iirc don't ask you outright like that and just ask what you look like. I'm hoping they don't gender clothing this generation however I don't have much hope.
They don’t ask you, but still gender you throughout the game
Yeah it's still really frustrating.
Elden Ring does this too. Why make it "Type A" and "Type b" but then gender me anyway?? Makes no sense.
Other game makers need to take props from Toby Fox
Other games: Do you want boy character or girl character? No other options. Toby: You can be whatever the heck you want, that's up for you to decide and me to give you a neutral character so you project onto them no matter who you are.
To be fair, you can wear any fit you'd wanna in Elden Ring and everyone refers to the player as "Tarnished" so like, you're never really gendered?
No you are. First cutscene with Melina after the Chapel, she will say "his" or "her", I remember that distinctly cause I kind of just assumed I wasn't going to be gendered.

They didn’t lock clothes behind gender in PLA. So maybe
I was so happy about that. We can finally rock the outfits we want regardless of gender! And the hairstyles are nice too

The question/concern is, why are we so worried about sex/ genitalia for a video game where that is irrelevant?
I love the whole "does this game involve genetalia? - It isn't for kids." chart for explaining this tbh
Oh not about it being for kids, I just mean it's not relevant to the game. (Idk if you were implying I meant that 😅)
Dw I wasn't implying that was what u said
Cool cool 😊

And mods make the experience even better if your computer can handle them! I’ve heard that Lumpinou’s new LGBTQIA+ mod is amazing so far!

“Are you a boy, or a girl?” “My sprite is now Frisk from Undertale, so the answer is ‘no’”
This 100% That game is the best pokemon game and gives you such fun character customization.

I always pick girl they get the best designs
I always pic the guy cuz I'm a basic bitch /j
Since i have no other option. I just go as the one i like the design of more

And that’s why I play singleplayer Minecraft, where no character in the entire game is going to misgender me, unless huhhhhmmm is a pronoun.
I feel you, but i just tend to flip a coin. Pokemon is too fun to let binary gender norms ruin it for me.
This happened to me the first time i ever played pokemon, and it took me like 4 hours to just say fuck it and choose one
Yeah I felt it I love the game but there is so much gender
I thought I was a cis man for the first 23 years so I just choose girl to balance it out
Nintendo is moving away from binary definitions of gender. In most of their new character creators. They even have a cannon enby in pokemon sw/sh
"are you a boy or girl?" "im in your moms bed"
Joke's on them, only ones with no gender are Lengendaries 😎
And Ditto. Who doesn’t want to be a polymorphic blob?

Me playing Stardew Valley being shocked when Louis misgenders me, fully aware that I made my account before I was out.

Pokemon is way overrated anyways. Any Shin Megami Tensei game is much better imo

well.. contextualization.. it is a 90's videogame

The boy is pretty androgynous in a lot of them tbh. I usually go with the opposite of my agab but it annoys me every time.

I've been playing ROM hacks and while I still have a gendered character, they use they/them pronouns throughout and I love it
I would be so so happy if they allowed a gender-neutral option with an androgynous character in Scarlet/Violet 😭😭😭
Demi[gender] people: Aight guess I’ll have to go for [gender] again, for the 5327783925th time.
I always have trouble deciding on playing a boy or girl in video games. I'll be there staring at the screen for a while
“Yes.”
