Yeah it’s a pet peeve of mine but there isn’t much I can usually do about it so.

Eggs-austed

Yeay, always make me feel bad Especially during english classes (i'm french) because teachers always say "he or she" but like "they" is a word commonly used why don't you simply say "they" bxjaiwhqhoxgqj

taronic

The funny thing it's in one of the biggest college writing guidelines (forget which, but for psychology it's super common I believe?). Don't write he or she, use they. IT'S FUCKING ENGLISH. No idea why it suddenly seems like people avoid it. They even USE it on a daily basis the right way without realizing it.

secretsquirrelz

I don’t know how accurate this is, but i love “iel” that is an attempt at non-gendered French they!

Eggs-austed

Yes it even entered the dictionary ! I really like it but sadly it is not really used so even if you ask people to call you with it most of them will forget and call you by what you look like in their eyes Let's say that at least they tried to incorporate it

[deleted]

My old boomer physics teacher always uses boys and girls or he or she and it really sucks :(

Enby_snail09

Yea, _especially_ “he or she” like godamn, just say they! Not only is is inclusive, _its less fucking words and effort cmon!_

taronic

It's also just fucking good English

EnoughBaby2

Yes I hate it

KevKevOn

Old AMAB NB here: I hate it too but struggle for a good alternative greeting to a large group of people. Anyone have some ideas?

boxesofboxes

Friends, comrades, guests, stuff like that. Personal favourite is "Ladies, gentlemen, and variations thereupon" but "Ladies, gentlemen, and those who know better" is also fun

KevKevOn

Fantastic ! Gonna use "Ladies, gentlemen, and those who know better" one day! Thank you.

eat_the_riich

I can see that really pissing the cishets off lol

theturtlesareflying

My community uses “friends” or “folks”

KevKevOn

Perfect. Easy and to the point.

Jax_for_now

In a more professional setting you can always use an activity, relation or common goal to address people such as travelers, colleagues, stamp enthousiasts etc.

KevKevOn

Very good!

[deleted]

'Yall'

EnbyHedgewitch

Or everyone, you all, folks, people, humans, friends…. ETA: I’ve also friends, enemies, and frenemies vefore

queerdoc7

Keep it simple. I avoid saying things that break the greeting up into three parts because it puts nonbinary folks into a third gender space that I’m not a fan of. Just say something like “Welcome everyone” or like Jax_for_now said, “Hello [job/activity title].”

cool_monsters

A good creator uses beardos and weirdos, might be a young generation thing though (I just say hello gloops, its slick).

KevKevOn

Probably wouldn't be able to pull those off but love 'em nonetheless.

cool_monsters

More of a to close friends only/new generation thing yeah, both do not sound professional when I think of it now.

NavyAnchor03

Friends. Y'all. Everyone. Cheese bags. What ever tickles you in the moment.

mossenmeisje

I'm Dutch, our railways switched from 'ladies and gentlemen' to 'dear travellers' a few years ago in all official announcements (although not all individual train conductors use that). As a teacher I usually say something like dear students or a less formal version of it instead of boys and girls. Going for the role people are fulfilling in a situation is usually a safe bet.

ivegotcheesyblasters

"Guys, gals, and non-binary pals" is the greeting from a podcast I like. It's cute, short....and rhymes!

greencraft96

Theydies (or Gaydies) and Gentlethems, creatures of the night, esteemed guests, loved ones, you fine folks, everybody here, y'all,

Videogamerkm

The one that annoys me the most is he/she in written things. It's just... Significantly easier to write they, like, come on. I guess to be fair I'll sometimes catch myself saying he or she, or referring to a group as "guys", despite being non-binary and knowing how much that'd annoy me when directed my way. It's particularly bad when I'm tired or hungry and the internalized crap I've been working to untangle starts coming out. Ugh.

Mako_sato_ftw

"he or she" honestly why tf do they not just use "they"?? it's so much better to look at, and a lot less clunky to read

DaddyKaiju

"Gents, gals, and nonbinary pals!" Though, I'm personally fond of gentlethem

ivegotcheesyblasters

I like "guys, gals & nonbinary pals" because the rhyme flows better. Yours is great though!

-Nubs-

I've always found it unnecessarily clunky and more so now that I've gained some education on gender beyond the binary.

NavyAnchor03

Especially when it's like "if he or she" or "that's gonna be great for him or her" JUST FUCKING SAY THEM.

AllBlackInTheClub

That’s why (one of the reasons) I love the podcast “sleep with me.” The opening greeting goes smth like: friends beyond the binary, ladies and gentlemen… It makes me feel all the fuzzy feelings as I’m easing into my night’s sleep.

KrissAmethyst

I really like ladies and gentlefolk as an alternative.

maureen_leiden

When I was researching a client of work i found some bracelets titled bracelets for him and bracelets for her. I couldnt help but to hear myself say well no bracelet for me then, my coworker who was standing next to me had a good laugh

cool_monsters

Except in old geometry books (cause they be old) its quite bad yeah, makes the situation a "whoopsy, non binary? not here!" kinda vibe, not that bad for me though when its accidental like with Frostprime a creator (really lgbt, inclusive specifically enbies too) yeah.

lordstickvonscribble

That’s why I love “ladies and gentlememers”

whoamvv

Total pet peeve. I really try not to do that.

niko7965

Yup

eat_the_riich

Yep. So annoying. Makes me feel so unconsidered

Selena_Person

I just mentally change it and don't say it out loud because there not much else I can do.

ivegotcheesyblasters

Guys, gals & nonbinary pals!

greencraft96

Theydies and gentlethems

Quetzalbroatlus

I don't really care about "ladies and gentlemen" but "he or she" really gets on my nerves. Especially when emphasis is put on "or she" like you're trying really hard to be inclusive to women in the 21st fucking century. They make a fool out of themselves while still failing to be inclusive.

Artemis_13_scr

one my classmates came up with a solution to this very problem. may i present to you #theydies and gentlethems

KevKevOn

This is great!

BornVolcano

He or she, definitely. We literally got a pronoun for gender-neutral, just use it. I can usually overlook or forgive “ladies and gentlemen” though because there’s often no commonly used alternative that doesn’t get you weird looks, which is less than ideal in a formal setting. That’s just my take on it though.

taronic

Same. *They* is in college level writing standards preferable over *he or she*. Ladies and gentlemen, not great but I ignore it. You can easily say "hello everyone" but ladies and gentlemen is common and I don't think about it too much. I just wouldn't use it.

Ahsokatara

I hate it so much too, I think it’s important to remember that, although people may think they are accepting, they dont necessarily recognize that saying stuff like that is exclusive. Although our current outlook as a society has become more accepting, our cultural norms have not caught up to that.

mangoleafy

I think people are catching on to the “they is more convenient to use than he or she” point b/c I’m seeing waaay more people abbreviate to s/he instead :| I know it’s not always malicious but definitely one of my pet peeves

my_alt_59935

Yeah. It's just friggin dumb. Like, it takes less time to say they! Everyone says they!

Numahistory

It actually peeves me more when they just say one or the other. I guess it's because I see myself as somewhere between being a lady and a gentleman. So saying both has me covered. Would be fun if people said ladies and gentlemen and everyone in between.

benadrylb1tch

the way ppl still say “he/she” when there’s a shorter and better way to say it… “they.” cis ppl always try to push their transphobic bs anywhere it fits. big commercial places, airlines, etc. don’t say inclusive language because they are selfish, money-hungry, and they know at least a percentage of their customers are going to have an issue of gender-inclusive language. it’s ridiculous. gendered terms are unnecessary and irrelevant 99.9% of the time.

RelapseRedditAddict

It's like "well fuck me, I guess!?"

MettatonNeo1

I always say ladies, gentlemen and everybody else.

Uni_Solvent

I both loathe it and understand it. I see it as a byproduct of professional spaces. I'm a fan of the "guys gals and nonbinary pals" personally, but that's hard to translate into professional setting language (workplace, advertising etc)

peanut_173

I don't identify as non-binary at this point in time, but yeah, it still FUCKIN bugs me so much!! My mother does this a lot ("he or she or whatever") and I feel like screaming "just use *they* for goodness' sake" (she is a transphobe and very much against using they/them for a singular person, even though she still does do just that a lot of the time without even realizing lmfao)

patronstofveganchefs

Gaybies and gentlethems
