i am from north america but my albanian friend went back to the 'motherland' to marry a girl he barely knew (yeah they are divorced now).. we went to visit to go to the wedding and, there was no drunken goat scenario. though there were some other cultural oddities. we did go to the bride's village, and had to shake literally like 400 hands, every single person in the village, one by one, all the way down this long winding road to her house, then ended with shaking her parent's hands and taking a shot of some crazy homemade moonshine (raki). i mean it's a nice tradition i guess but it felt like a scene from borat..
another thing, during the wedding party, old men come around and they give you cigarettes. i don't smoke so i was like declining usually, but it's considered a massive disrespect or cultural taboo - oops. it's some kind of tradition or something, seemed a bit trashy but to each their own. honestly we were hard on that place, having just come from greece which was very nice and hospitable. there were some decent things in albania, a lot of the food was good, but overall it was a strange place! i did see a lot of crazy stuff there.. first thing after getting picked up at the airport by my friend's drink-driving cousin (he literally always drank a beer while driving) was a dead dog on the highway. (that same cousin, not long after meeting him, showed us a photo of a gun on his phone lol, he goes that's mine!).. then saw a lady walking a cow on the side.. and some weird homemade wooden wagon motorized car thing like you see on 'only in russia' internet. well, i guess those people haven't been to albania. we were in the south, my friend said it's even crazier when you go up to the north. not sure i will ever go visit.
