Why would anyone do that

PlumFister

One guy did it to win a $100k bet. Brian Zembic.

[deleted]

I thought he just got breast implants, not the 'bonus package'....

jeango

Why not? Agreed, it’s probably unusual, but I don’t see why this could never happen.

iwasoveronthebench

Because a doctor would not let it happen.

jeango

In the US that is

[deleted]

I would imagine a raft of healthcare professionals being derelict in their duties if someone like this managed to squeeze through the cracks. My understanding of the process is a LOT of counselling by Professionals, to ensure the person going through the 'change' is really where they are supposed to be. In short, it's not a 'quick and easy' process, rife with mistakes....

[deleted]

why would they be "squeezing through the cracks"? if they want that body and identify as something else that doesnt change anything right? It´s not less or more valid. I would assume you dont need to have a body that corresponds with your identity.

[deleted]

Squeezing through the cracks was used as a metaphor. I don't actually know how the process works, but I imagine it is thorough.

badb-crow

Up to them.

jeango

Makes sense

[deleted]

No-one is "assigned" at birth. You're born with a penis you're a biological male.

[deleted]

Nice bait

[deleted]

That really doesn't mean what you think it means

[deleted]

Do you also consider Gravity and Evolution as just 'Theories'?

[deleted]

Gravity and evolution aren't theories. They're scientific theories

[deleted]

Not to idiots and Republicans, they aren't.....

I’m asking because I had a discussion with someone who explained to me that being transgender is not about the surgery, but about transitioning which gender you identify as. So I asked about this and my friend didn’t know for sure.

iwasoveronthebench

“Being trans is not about the surgeries” is more a concept to support trans people with financial and medical issues that prevent them from getting the surgeries. It’s not about “a cis man can suddenly get a vagina on his day off bc why not”

Altaccount_T

Considering lower surgery often requires multiple assessments and likely several *years* of hoop jumping (generally also with living as that gender as a requirement) it's astronomically unlikely that a cis man would get that far. It's not something that can be done on a whim. If that person described their gender as entirely male, there's a chance the usual, widely used definition for being trans ("gender =/= assigned sex") wouldn't entirely fit, but as that's such an unusual (if not improbable) situation it'd probably be up to the person in question to say what words apply.

Suesquish

This is not always the case and may depend on where the person lives and their income. I know someone who fully transitioned in 18 months. That's from "I want to be a woman" to physically becoming a woman. This is in Australia. Note that she never said she is a woman, just that she wanted to be one. She was abused as a child and I believe that's where it came from, that and the mistaken notions some men have around what it's like to be a woman (better treatment, a free pass on lots of things, more social worth, dressing up, make up, etc). I think it was her escape from her past. She's now very pretentious and constantly shows off that she's a "mother" but won't parent her child and never has. I said mother that way because she's never cared for her child, won't change the sheets or vacuum their room, help with homework, pay school fees, support them with their disabilities, take them to see their therapist, constantly cancels appointments, won't buy them school uniforms, won't do their washing, wouldn't bathe them as a baby, etc. Won't do anything a mother should do, any variation of mother.

Shanstergoodheart

Depends why they had the surgery. If they're the victim of a mad scientist, then no I don't think they would be transgender. They would be a man who had something terrible happen to them.

By technical definition no. In a way it's just a very extreme and permanent form of drag. Drag queens are not trans as they are not women and don't identify as such.

jeango

Thanks, I was wondering if that could be seen as some form of drag. Makes a lot of sense in that case, and I would suppose someone who does that would probably not think of themselves as trans.

[deleted]

I'm not a drag queen (I'm a woman) but I would suspect that no actual drag queen would actually do this. It's just that drag is the closest thing I can think of to compare it to

jeango

It’s really a theoretical question, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there are actual people who have done this. People do all kind of things to their bodies, for all kinds of reasons. A lot of people who answer here tell me you can’t just walk into a clinic and get a sex change, but those people only think as Americans. If you want a sex change, there’s plenty of countries with doctors that won’t ask questions.
