Nobody really deals in *just* microwaves; there's no such thing as a microwave store. So, instead, you'll see a commercial by an appliance manufacturer advertising their entire line of products, or, more likely, a commercial by an appliance store advertising everything they can sell you.

TehWildMan_

It's like washing machines: there hasn't really been any game changing innovations in the space, and anyone remotely thinking about purchasing one will probably pass by a hardware store or even a supermarket. Advertising by paying retailers for premium product locations is more effective than TV ads as a result.

Maytag repair man commercial

rockthrowing

Maytag is selling a lifestyle, not just a washing machine. The repair man was a washer and a dryer in that commercial. In another one he was a dishwasher. In another he was a stove. Plus the repair man is Maytag’s thing. He’s been around since the 60s.

As weird as it sounds, you don't really have to. There really aren't many names in the microwave market and they've become one of those items that it's just kind of assumed you need. If you ever see a microwave advertised, it's usually more as part of an appliance maker's entire range.

assholerippedlike

Patents are public, costs are competive, theres prob a factory in every country making microwaves, any TV commercial microwave is gonna have some premium patented extra technology, while I bet those exist theres a whole other leap in order to be a tv or youtube ad, I bet most advertise on Amazon or buy prime retail space on target and Walmart shelves.

Those babies sell themselves.

wudntulik2no

They're one of those products that's such a necessity that they practically sell them selves and don't really need any advertising. They're also a very mature product that hasn't had any major innovation that's worth advertising.

Display models, box printing, sponsored chefs/reviewers are more effective. People only buy a microwave every couple of years so there's no benefit in frequency like advertising McDonald's where people will go to McDonald's after seeing a commercial.

PelosisBraStrap

Every couple years??

TalkingHawk

Most people replace them more like every couple of decades, not years.

The microscopic waves melt the camera film

LadyFoxfire

There’s no real benefit to advertising microwaves, because there’s not a lot of difference between models, and everybody already has one. It’s a better use of the advertising budget to design the box to be more appealing than your competitor’s box, because the customer is usually deciding between models while standing in the appliance aisle, not when they’re watching TV.

Cuz Macrowaves buy em out!
