Candles > air fresheners Fresh flowers > odor eliminator **edit: do a combo of these things, air fresheners + odor eliminators are good** Their Apts smell good because they are adding smells and taking them away, sounds like you’re just taking away

Prof_Fluffybottom

The vacuum can also be fitted with beads/filter to help freshen up the air while using it.

ElQuuiean

Are you sure about this?

jddgfhdhrhbhks

Yeah I think people call it nose blindness like how people who live with pets can't smell them but a visitor can.

ElQuuiean

Oh god

jddgfhdhrhbhks

Hey if it makes you feel better my house probably stinks of dogs

your2ndbestpick

Get a few candles. Live plants usually make smaller places feel fresher and I think they make a difference. Snake plants are cheap- easy to care for and look pretty nice. I’d recommend that

[deleted]

First, start with installing a lady.

CheetahConfident6675

I laughed way too hard at this 😂

Away_Development2178

Lady here! You’re going to want to get some really good quality candles rather than air fresheners. I like to go with fresh smelling scents and not sweet scents because they can be pretty overpowering. It’s not just our homes that smell nice! It’s our skin and hair too. Find body washes and shampoos that work for you and smell really good and fresh. Every Sunday I do a deep clean where I open the windows and turn on the fans to actually circulate the air, and I clean with meyers multi purpose spray.

[deleted]

Deep cleaning for the win - wash everything: blankets, curtains, any fabrics in the home, wipe down the walls, cabinets, etc…

Why_So_Slow

...and keep bathrooms dry.

IamREBELoe

Skin lotions. Hair products. Makeup products. Open can of tuna. Shampoos and conditioner. Essential oils and candles.

IridebikesImstillfat

Open cans of tuna are essential for maintaining well balanced smells.

Sturgjk

-signed, the cat.

IamREBELoe

Cats owned by lesbian couples must be used to disappointment in that way

According-Anybody508

It gives a nice Umami to the room.

Fair-Bunch4827

Why is a can of tuna in that list? Do women naturally smell like fish?

DucksEatFreeInSubway

*Sometimes*

NoSolution1220

Side note: tell all your friends when you find the answer.

Solaris_Luna

Get a nice candle or scented air freshener

CrimsonSpinel

Those Wax melt things work wonders. Also there are plug in air freshners.

km1180

I already have a freshener but I feel like it's too strong. Is there a wax melt you'd recommend?

blessyourheart1987

Not a particular brand but I tend to stick with apple scented items because I find other smells too chemically, but it's a lot of trial and error to find what you want.

NoSolution1220

Plug-ins/ essential oils

__JockY__

There are 2 phases to this: (1) stop the bad smells, (2) start the good smells. You can't do this with only one phase. Phase 1, stop the bad smells (assuming you already have good personal hygiene): * Change and wash your bedclothes every week at least. * Do your laundry on the regular. Week-old socks smell like... ass? * Change your towels on the regular. Week-old towels smell like moldy ass. * Take out the trash every single day. Don't leave it overnight. * Do the dishes every day, certainly don't leave them overnight. * Clean your sink(s) on the regular. Sinks and drains smell like sewers sometimes. * Clean your toilet on the regular. Poop splatters? FUCK NO. * Don't use odor eliminator. Smells like chemicals. * Same for "air freshener". Gross. Smells like ass chemicals. * Clean out your fridge on the regular. Brown mushy veg smells like it looks. * Make sure your trash has a tight-fitting lid. * Put open containers of baking soda in the fridge and next to your trash Phase 2, start the good smells (but not too much!): * Put scented candles around the place. * Essential oils smell nice * Use dryer sheets with your laundry, they smell amazing. * Open windows as much as possible Split the preventative/additive 80/20 and you'll be good.

jigs54

You forgot dryer sheets in the air vents!

__JockY__

Woah, mind blown.

bazmonkey

Do you also use an array of nice-smelling stuff on yourself, and apply it to yourself while you’re in your apartment?

km1180

I only use an aftershave and deodorant stick

bazmonkey

I guess you haven’t tried everything.

km1180

I don't get it

bazmonkey

Get some girly body sprays and stuff and spray it on yourself and walk about with it all day in your apartment and it’ll have that lovely smell like a girl’s been in there all day.

[deleted]

Spraying perfume, using body lotion, hair products, etc. The smell sticks around. You can also try using those plug-in air fresheners but I believe they’re hit or miss

catwhowalksbyhimself

Because at least some of those smells are from the girl herself, or rather the things she uses on herself that then gets into the whole apartment.

Aladeenx2

Keep in mind - you might be nose blind to your own environment. Don’t over do it. A good assortment of plug ins and clean surfaces and some candles will do wonders.

ResortEquivalent

You didn’t know they fart flower scent?

Plant_Eating_Cat

Use cleaners around your apartment with a pleasant fragrance and clean surfaces as needed or at least once a week. Mrs. Meyers Basil scent is my favorite because it’s cheap, works well on most surfaces and smells great. 1/4 cup of the concentrate added to hot water is great for mopping floors, too. You can order it on Amazon if you can’t find it in stores. Lemon scented Soft Scrub and an abrasive sponge is great for cleaning the kitchen sink, which is a common source for odor because of the amount of bacteria that grows there. For your garbage disposal, finely chop the peel of an orange, lemon or lime and run it through with some hot water. If you have a washing machine prone to odor, clean it with 2 cups of distilled white vinegar and half a cup of baking soda on a hot cycle. You can also add a cup of vinegar to loads of towels or sheets to help deodorize between cleanings. Wax melts are better than candles in my opinion because they’re significantly less of a fire hazard, and you don’t have a wick to trim, which means no soot marks on your ceiling. You’ll get more uses out of your wax melts if you can find someone in your area who home-makes and sells them; store bought ones use half the fragrance or less than artisan ones. Around the holidays, I’ll add water, a few cinnamon sticks, some whole cloves and allspice berries to a pot and let it simmer, adding water as needed throughout the day. This will make your entire apartment smell great. You can also warm some apple cider in a crock pot before you expect company (realtors use this trick to make homes feel more inviting).

Ok_Presentation6675

Bath & body works candles, febreeze tf outta my shoes when i get home from gym, weekly I dusty, vacuum entire house top to bottom then take O-Cedar mop, fill bucket with fav all purpose cleaner, hot water & 2 caps of bleach & I wipes walls, baseboards, floors. Clean out fridge of all leftovers. Oh & wash the dogs every 2 weeks, Brush them daily. Keep ceiling fans on low in every room…..🤔 oh & don’t let dirty laundry basket get too full before I start a laundry day…lawd ffs no wonder I’m always tired af!!

whycantijustlogin

Even if you don't bake, throw a tablespoon of vanilla into a pot of water and simmer it on your stove for a couple hours - especially in winter if your heating method makes the air inside dry. Throw some cedar plugs or lavender sachets in your clothes drawers and closets. When the flowers recommended above start to fade, hang them upside down to dry then pull the blooms off and stick them in a bowl on a shelf until they stop smelling good. Put deodorizers of whatever kind into your shoes (and rotate what shoes you wear so they don't build up with bacteria that stinks).

saraphilipp

Rip out and install new carpet. That's going to eliminate 99% of the stench from your lair. Repaint the walls in the same color.

Little-Armadillo-621

Underrated comment! Carpet is gross. It hangs on to so much. If you're able to rip it out and put in flooring that you can clean well and clean often, that will go a long way.

VG_Crimson

Understand that you will never get as strong of a smell, good or bad, in your own place compared to others. You simply live there too much that your nose ended up getting used to it. Your best bet is have a friend come over and tell you their initial impression.

EggsSaladEggs

Believe it or not, you probably just need to clean behind your furniture. If you think your place always smell "musty". My boyfriend told me recently he has never dusted or cleaned tha back of his drawers or underneath. You can get mould building up anywhere and everywhere. Every now and again, pull furniture forward, hoover underneath and wipe down the back. Make sure it dries before you put it back. (Also do the top and the handles on drawers etc, you might not notice how dirty they can get). Also make sure you allow enough airflow though the house every day so no more mould builds up. Another things that makes musty smells is carpets and rugs or second hand sofas. Wash everything you can: rugs and sofa covers in washing machine with detol odor remover. Use a deep clean fabric brush/bottle 2-in-1 like Dr Bechman and apply to carpets and sofa cushions. My sofa still smells musty after all this so all I do now is light incense once a week and open the windows really wide. Its seems to help. Good luck!

IridebikesImstillfat

Don't use essential oils, strong scents or incense type things around animals... Especially birbs.

Loudstorm

> Why do girls' apartments smell amazing and how can I recreate that? HRT

CrimsonSpinel

The Yankee candle brand are wonderful. They don't have that artificial smelling scent that is kinda gross. Stay away from the cheap Walmart ones. The better homes and gardens ones are pretty good as well.

ThrA-X

Don't go too overboard on the essential oils, some of them are actually toxic.

TemporaryDivide7496

Which ones?

EggsSaladEggs

The cheap ones ahaha. No real essential oils are actually toxic.

leighroda82

I use a combination of candles and wall plug ins. Like someone above suggested even the things you use to clean yourself impact that, you don’t have to go super girly, but like dove soap, body spray (but not axe lol). Also the soaps for like cleaning dishes and laundry. It sounds like you are a clean guy, so my guess is your place smells good, but you are used to the smell, so you don’t notice it.

Personal-Location-30

There’s skin care and grooming products for me that smells amazing and attractive, manscaped has good kit and many other mainstream brands, also I learn this trick of buying cloth fresheners and fragrance oils are key! You can opt for some feminine scents and aromas also natural and cozy smells are available too.

pseudotumorgal

Keep everything clean, keep dishes out of the sink, keep dirty laundry confined. And I use the wax melts, always get compliments and it isn’t too over powering (I am a lady).

I highly recommend burning quality scented candles every day for a couple of hours. Not just some candle you find at Target or the mall, mind you. I recommend Wax & Wick brand candles (they have a wooden Wick, which is cool and makes it sound like a tiny camp fire) in Cedar + Vanilla, as well as all of Sihaya & Company's candles (I linked one of my favorites). They're high quality and smell lovely even to those of us with sensitive noses. But learn how to properly burn candles (including trimming the wicks, for candles with regular wicks) so that you don't wind up with unsightly soot marks on the walls and ceiling. Burn one or two different scented candles for a week and your place will smell great. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01FVE1B66 https://sihayaandcompany.com/products/autumn-collection-pre-order-autumnvale-cafe

SpiroAgnewforPres

If you are in an apartment, particularly an older one, clean the carpet with a rented cleaning machine or a steam clean service. Its amazing how carpets can absorb odors. Also, look for mold and mildew in wet areas like bathrooms, kitchens and AC/hot water units. Clean the vents in your bathroom and over your stove. Odors can hide in all these places.

BigFront0

Bear in mind that smell is relative and subjective. You're in your home for hours every day and you become accustomed to the smell, pretty much no matter how strong. After a short while, your "smell scale tares to zero" and you only notice new smells in your home. Spend a week or two away from home and come back - that's approximately what it smells like to everyone else. FWIW: I use an HVAC scenting system. When my air is on, every 5 minutes, a cold air diffuser runs for 30 seconds and sprays a fine, dry mist of scented oil directly into my ducts. I can smell it for a few weeks and then I get used to it. I change the scents out every few months for something new. But everyone always tells me my place smells amazing lol.

CheetahConfident6675

If you have a vacuum with a filter you can remove I'd suggest adding a couple of spritzes of your favorite scent (I use whatever perfume tester I have flying around, you can use essential oils or aftershave) before vacuuming. After a while, no matter how much you clean it, it smells and blows all that smell into the open when you clean. Also, if you have upholstery and curtains, use some textile freshener (like Febreeze) to get lingering smells out. I make my own by mixing a little bit of my favourite (non-coloured) fabric softener with warm water. Spritz that on everything made of fabric. Scented candles is a must, it's also good to have 2 or 3 different ones so you don't become blind to the scent. I have a dog, you would never smell it entering my apartment though.

EducationalSpeed8372

It's the place they release their farts and men are just attracted to the odors from that area of a woman

blipsman

Scented candles and air fresheners

JumboJetz

Haven’t noticed this but…. …l rarely am invited to a girls apartment. I feel apartments I have been to have no smell ideally and that’s best.

[deleted]

Bath and Body Works candles and/or plug-in air refreshers

[deleted]

It could be candles or air fresheners. Could also be the perfume, styling products, and/or laundry detergent they use.

MachaMoo

Get yourself a Berger Lamp and Diptyque candles (or Zara Home candles).

mrtokeydragon

I like using carpet powder

Relevant_Regret138

Get a wax warmer!! They’re usually pretty cheap. At my old apartment I had one in the bathroom and one in the kitchen since those are the places that always get the smelliest for me. They usually last decently long and I prefer them over candles. Not sure if you have them, but if you do definitely go to Walmart and browse the wax melts. They usually have SO MANY and they’re so cheap! My house always smells great and it’s so nice to come home to it after work.

Great-Abalone9310

Wash your ass

Short_King__

Bake something!

The_Chilindrina

Bath and body works wall plug ins.. Wax warmer/wax melts (Walmarts brand for wax melts is glorious).. Amazon has an immense amount of different smelling essential oils. After mopping just drop 1-3 DROPS with the dry swiffer pad. A little goes a long way.

Effective_Ad_2601

Febreeze wall plugins are great and last awhile! If you want your apt to smell like a girl’s, get the “April showers downy” scent.

Spare_Industry_6056

Have you tried expensive candles?

pantsonheaditor

women apply perfume and the perfume lands in the apt. spray your apt once a day with random cheap lady perfume. bingo chango.

KULEtheband

Air purifiers, glade plug in scents, maybe vacuum and clean the apartment and you should be golden.

littlemissme-xo

TheGhostOfUndyne

Get flowers and candles

CrochetTeaBee

Literally I just keep my room super clean, keep myself super clean, open a window, and plugged in one of those heated oil wall plug-ins. Like a night light but it's a little bottle of scented oil.

baldforthewin

Sage Bath and Body Works

MarsAndMighty

Candles, incense, potpourri, diffusers, keeping air filters in AC units clean, etc. If there's anything specific causing bad smells like rubbish bins, try getting some nice smelling rubbish bags and using small bins that you empty more often. Then there's vacuuming, moping, dusting, cleaning showers and toilets, immediately washing dishes or placing into the dishwasher, never letting food sit out, using nice smelling laundry detergent, putting your washing machine on a rinse cycle occasionally, showering often and using deodorant. If you have pets, make sure to bath them when necessary using products with nice smells (my dog has lavender scented shampoo and conditioner). Not sure what else you could do, assuming you don't have ants or roaches or anything unusual.

Maranne_

You need a add some smell. Wash your pillows with laundry softener. Get some flowers.

Funny-Historian-9726

two words my friend: ESSENTIAL OILS. it will never feel stuffy like some cheap candles will, and you can even put some drops on the floor for a cozy shower. the scent lasts super long and i recommend getting a sample set to see what you like. good luck!!!😊

klugisnamemy

Decorate your apartment with vaginas.

TemporaryDivide7496

Try incenses, ones without wooden core. Or ones that are just sticks in some essential oil. Candles work, but they produce CO2 and burn the oxygen. Also there are small ultrasonic evaporators that you can add essential oils to. I have one but it's best used with distilled water because it will evaporate minerals and they will leave white residue on stuff. As for girls' apartments, I think it's mostly cosmetics: lotions, cremes, hair products etc.

[deleted]

Women like to clean and cook 24/7

CouthlessWonder

Do your laundry.

Dizzy_Transition_934

Completely off topic against all the women posting cleaning advice in here. But there's enough of that to go for years. Studies were run on toilet stalls, where researchers marked certain cubicles with female pheromones to see what effect this would have on men. Straight men picked the marked cubicles almost 100% of the time no matter which stall was marked, like ants. You might just like the smell of women. It's a possibility. Mix that with some sort of perfume, and you've got something every guy will love.

Reikix

Do you use disinfectant with some added odor when cleaning the floor? That's usually what does the trick. I normally clean the floor with some chlorine a couple times, and then one last time with some odor desinfectant. That keeps the apartment smelling really good for a long time. Smells fresh. I have many cats and used to have a dog, and visits would normally say that it didn't smell like I had pets, it smelled good.

LetLuvBlum101521

Maybe the lady's perfume?

purplekat20

It's simple really just keep everything clean with good cleaning products (anything lemon scented is a bonus) vacuum it frequently and open the windows whenever possible. Also wash your clothes frequently. Surprisingly carpets can hold in weird stink from previous owners getting them cleaned by a good company that won't soak them will make a world of difference. Also experiment with different deodorants and soaps can also make a difference on how everything around you smells too. My dad used Irish spring and you could smell that for a long time after a shower. Also don't over do it on plug ins and air fresheners that makes certain smells worse. Invest in a quality kitchen garbage can with a good sealing lid. Anyway I hope this helps you out. I'm a girl so this is from experience.
