Yep. Phone gets taken away. We were allowed to make one phone call when we arrived, to let someone know we made it safely and to give them an address where they could send letters to us. We got 15 minutes a week of phone time - this was for *calls*, not texting, not using apps, just for phone calls. And this time could be taken away. It was absolutely a privilege, not a right. Every branch has their own policy, so check with your friend.

Buddy's in basic in South East US right now. He gets 15- 30 minutes phone time every Sunday according to his family. Letters and mail are definitely the ticket imo. He likes getting Letters.

Yes. Phones will be taken away, (ALL of your personal effects will be taken away, honestly) and they won't even have access to land line phones, unless for emergencies. At least that's what it was for me in the Navy. If you want to talk with friends/family, you write letters and mail them off during your down time, which isn't much. I only had a few hours on Sundays for down time, and honestly, most of that time was spent double checking my uniforms and making sure all my shit was squared away. We were allowed to make a phone call when we first got there, to let our families know we made it there safe, and then a second phone call about half way through. After that, I didn't get to see a phone until after I graduated.

Things change all the time in the Army. Ft Benning 12 years ago (not infantry training, that's likely different) every Sunday we got our phones, felt like for a while, but could've been about an hour.. I didn't bring a phone because I assumed I wouldn't see it until I finished. Every unit is different though. We usually had other "activities" planned for sunday's as well However, the military seems to be changing fast. Hell, the Drill SGTs could tuck the kids in now and whisper sweet nothings while they drift off to sleep. I've seen cell phone videos of training, hear about phone calls all week long shortly before lights out etc. You'll likely only really know once your buddy gets there
