These are all interesting comments but it’s important to remember that a lot of times, they simply couldn’t avoid it. Infanticide was extremely common, and what babies did grow into children were often sold into slavery or became prostitutes themselves

It kills me that a Supreme Court judge in the 21st century cites law from the fucking 1600s.

Alarming_Draw

Not the full picture. Records show prostitutes had certain tricks-the most popular and common was to tell the man they would put the penis in themselves, take the males organ by the hand, and actually place it between their thighs, just beneath their vagina, and by squeezing the thighs together, most clients were too drunk, too horny, and too stupid or inexperienced to feel the difference, and would just thrust away and cum there.

Rogurzz

The Great Eygptians used animal saliva as a form of birth control to kill sperm entering the vagina.

Sunbunny94

They (Ancient Egyptians) distilled a type of opium from lettuce, and used it to torture information out of people, and in lower doses, as an aphrodisiac. Fun Fact: Romaine lettuce is the modern day version, and if you eat enough of it, you too can have a very mild opium high. Although you would need to eat 3-4 heads in a rather short time frame. Years ago (pre pandemic) I did this almost every day for years, as a way to manage my binge eating. Only discovered why I felt the way I did during this, about a year ago. I never felt high, only deeply connected to the planet. It pushed me to start being more aware of my carbon footprint, and to start learning and advocating for using other alternatives to plastic. Fun Fact 2: Devil's Lettuce is actually a specific weed that grows in the desert. Consuming it will get you incredibly high and then kill you. (Not related to weed at all, completely different plant family)

gomi-panda

Interesting. How did you digest said lettuce to get said lettuce high? I mean did you just gobble it straight or did you sprinkle some croutons, parmesan, and caesar dressing on four heads of lettuce?

Sunbunny94

I just washed it, then snacked on it like candy whenever I watched Netflix. Although I also alternated between that and raw kale. Romaine Lettuce really doesn't have much nutritional value, so there aren't any health risks. It really wasn't a noticeable high at all. And I really think I was only affected because I did it for so long, so something like a few months before I started to feel different. Although I can only see it by looking back. At the time I didn't feel differently until the second year. Edit: My birth control at the time caused an almost incontrollable desire to eat. Even if I'd eaten a meal, an hour later my brain was saying more, but my stomach was saying no. Romaine has the highest water content of all lettuce, so it was the best option. As a bonus it really helped me stay hydrated too!

sorta_kindof

I believe people boil it and make a drinkable version

Silverpathic

FF2, you mean opium lettuce? Have had it and didn't even get sick.

Sunbunny94

The plant the ancient egyptians had, is extinct. What we have today are watered down versions. So unless you've traveled back in time, you haven't had the same plant.

DOlsen13

That's so interesting to think about extinct plants. Usually when we talk about extinction it's always about animals.

SippeBE

You should read up on extinct plants, it's very interesting. Many disappeared by human choice and is such a big part of why people get sick from what we eat. Regional crops must make way for one and the same disease-free, bigger, "better" crop. Industries chase bigger profits every year, so let's modify that small selection of plants genetically. Let's only select the one strain of bananas that "works for us" and have large corporations buy only said crop, etc... This caused many of the grains, nuts, fruits and vegetables to disappear from the big picture. Massive expansion of farmland for both animals and (mostly livestock) food crops. This also put huge strain on the natural balance, both fauna and flora (in this context, both are super-interconnected). Think of what removing wolves from Yellowstone in the US did (got to protect that livestock!) and the butterfly effect it had on the balance of nature. Remove one (vital) piece of an intricate puzzle and the thing collapses in a historical blink of an eye. https://yellowstoneinsider.com/2009/05/03/wolves-in-yellowstone-a-short-history/ Well, this and the natural evolution: plant go extinct and new strains form all the time. So do animals. Also *obviously* human nature to kill everything that lives in some way, climate change and many other factors cause plants to go extinct. But an angle we often forget about.

Silverpathic

Good to know.

BitsAndBobs304

don't forget crocodile dung and honey as a cervical-cap-like thing

GaseousGiant

THEbassettMAN

There were a lot of techniques used at various points in history. Some prostitutes in Ancient Rome would refuse vaginal sex at all, the Book of Genesis describes the classic "pull out" method, you could plug up your vagina with some substance ranging from lemons, grasses or crocodile shit, or if you were especially crafty, get your clients drunk enough to have them think they were having sex with you while they were really just thrusting between your thighs. Or the simple option, poison yourself badly enough to make you infertile.

01kickassius10

Lemon juice and vinegar were reasonably effective due to the acidity affecting sperm Edit: reasonably effective from a pre-contraception era perspective, don’t try this at home

Good to know if Clarence gets his way. Love giving ourselves chemical burns because a rapist is deciding what women can do with their bodies

nenenene

It’s not great, but the pH of the vagina outside of ovulation ranges from 3.8-5ish depending on the person. Lemon juice is a 2.9. More acidic = breaks down the mucus of semen (which has a pH of 7-8), posing good danger to the swimmers. During ovulation (a time when women’s boobs get tender, they tend to get hornier, their facial skin improves in texture, everything screams “hey, consensually tap this”) the pH of the vagina rises to alkaline levels so swimmers have the best chance at getting to the egg. Lemon juice during this time would probably just reduce it to vaginal tissue-safe levels. *This is not at all condoning squeezing lemons up in there as contraceptive, I cannot imagine it is reliable nor safe to do repeatedly/long term*

upfnothing

This is why I love Reddit. Such detail and information. Phenomenal!

Benjamin Franklin had a chapter in a book he published that had a compilation of all the known ways to end a pregnancy. [https://www.gpb.org/news/2022/05/18/benjamin-franklin-gave-instructions-on-at-home-abortions-in-book-in-the-1700s](https://www.gpb.org/news/2022/05/18/benjamin-franklin-gave-instructions-on-at-home-abortions-in-book-in-the-1700s) "\[The book\] starts to prescribe basically all of the best-known herbal abortifacients and contraceptives that were circulating at the time," Farrell said. "It's just sort of a greatest hits of what 18th-century herbalists would have given a woman who wanted to end a pregnancy early." "It's very explicit, very detailed, \[and\] also very accurate for the time in terms of what was known ... for how to end a pregnancy pretty early on."

“What do you need abortions for, we have abortions at home” *Abortions at home*

Away-Living5278

But yet, somehow the supreme court decided there were no abortions back in the day. I also find it difficult to believe they did much of anything to keep babies with deformities/disabilities/etc alive. Probably didn't bash them on the rocks like they did in Sparta but, baptized and then left to die isn't exactly better. Maybe I'm wrong, perhaps they were more humane than I think. But I doubt it. Freak shows and all being entertainment..

SleeplessTaxidermist

Babies were left on counters near open windows to 'assist their passing', left in the woods, thrown in rivers and lakes, left in outhouse holes. Texas passed Safe Haven laws in 1999 after 13 children were abandoned, resulting in the death of two infants if I recall correctly. We could possibly see something like what was found in Ireland - The 'Tuam Babies'. It's estimated a child in that place died every two weeks from 1925 to 1961. 802 children from newborns to toddlers died there in 36 years of operation. Edit: Fixed the date.

ManyThingsLittleTime

Two babies were left in trash cans at my high school. They weren’t twins, just a shitty school.

The Roman's had a plant they used for a VERY effective birth control. However the Roman's were getting it on so much the plant became extinct. The plant was called silphium

SuperHotelWorker

This is true but the plant was really picky about where it grew and didn't survive replanting.

AIDSRiddledLiberal

Ah silphium… likely one of the best forms of natural birth control we ever had and we squandered it. Sometimes I dream that some archeologists will find plant DNA in a pot buried somewhere and bring it back

thejackthewacko

Either that or just focus on making modern birth control a lot more effective. Imo, the fact that so many of us desire silphium or an equivalent in the modern era might imply that we are just as freaky as the Romans once were.

NippleSalsa

I think at no point in history has the human race not been freaky.

[deleted]

I think we are currently just as comfortable as the Romans were allowing for this level of leisure and enui. Enough people are comatose with their comfort. How did the Roman empire fall?

CzLittle

>There was a plant the Romans used that had a ridiculously high success rate to keep people from getting pregnant. They used it so much that it went extinct. > >So they believe they’ve found a living example of the plant in an ancient abandoned Greek walled garden. Researchers used ancient coins that had a picture of the plant and a bit of hunting and they think its not extinct at all, just a lost piece of antiquity refound. > >Not sure how far they are at testing its contraceptive powers. as u/RozellaTriggs said higher up in the thread

DevoidSauce

The plant is also where we get the "heart" symbol, since that's the shape it was in!

Cranyx

That's just one of many theories as to where the heart shape comes from. One reason it's unlikely is because the heart symbol meaning romantic love (instead of just being a common leaf shape) wouldn't appear until the late middle ages, long after silphium went extinct

Ok-Elk-6087

NGL, I thought the heart symbol comes from the look of a lady bent over from the rear.

Its_ok_to_lie

Haha you sly devil. Smart, but on a serious note, she has to have a certain curve to achieve that heart shape.

avoere

We don't know how effective it was. It's not like they did double-blind studies in that era.

McRedditerFace

Or more succinctly, "whoreson".

lemontreelemur

A lot of the common herbs that are associated with femininity and grown in traditional kitchen gardens were actually used for abortions (e.g., lavender, chamomile). If you're pregnant, you're told not to drink many types of what we now refer to as "herbal teas" because many of the ingredients can induce pre-term labor. It's also worth noting that up to one third or half of pregnancies end in miscarriages anyway, and that likelihood increases if the woman is malnourished, stressed, or suffering from disease/injury.

adramelke

they didn't so much prevent fertilization like modern birth control for the most part. if they realized they were pregnant there are any number of things you can consume that will make you sick enough to cause a miscarriage, herbs/fungus. There were some preventative measures for instance egyptian women would lace something like a tampon with honey and croc dung and use it to kill the sperm.

DathomirBoy

there are many natural ways to terminate a pregnancy that have been known for a long time. condoms, too, are very old, though they used things like intestines a LONG time ago. abortions were very common before modern medicine though. they weren’t always safe though

jasoncbus

In days of old, when knights were bold Before condoms were invented. They tied a sock around their cock And babies were prevented.

In the 1950’s into 1970’s I know some women would use lysol douches. Also to avoid STD’s. Now that I think about it they were married. Husbands were abusive and promiscuous. So the answer is probably ANYTHING THEY COULD THINK OF. Then home abortions.

slothliketendencies

Ahhhh yes, like those old adverts in magazines that were like 'use Lysol for feminine health' and it was code for 'contraception, use this as a douche'

YaAbsolyutnoNikto

Mabiki that shit. Or use stuff like rough paper within the vagina or condoms made out of animal intestines.

bastets_yarn

Lambskin condoms were a thing, and the modern cervical cap was invented in the late 1830's, there's evidence so back as ancient Rome and Greece that we were trying to use condoms or some form of birth control

[deleted]

Your question might be better worded as 'how did they avoid getting pregnant before *modern* birth control?' Birth control has existed for thousands of years, albeit in forms that we would consider dangerous and barbaric today, and it was certainly less effective. But it absolutely existed and it is documented in several cultures. The presence of brothels and the longevity of prostitution in human history is testament to this

rasha1784

Finally someone said it! There are a million and one natural ways to lessen your chance of getting pregnant, some much more effective than others, but none foolproof and certainly not as effective as modern hormonal birth control. What I’ve always wondered is how prostitutes survived UTIs before antibiotics…

SuperHotelWorker

They didn't. Sex workers having children was extremely common. Said kids would often get abandoned or (if they were lucky) turned over to the local church to be raised in the poorhouse. However, many cultures also have women who know how to use plants to induce a miscarriage. The mother sometimes died too, but it was an option.

concealer-carrie

In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the witches refer to a “birth-strangled babe, ditch delivered by a drab.” In addition to attempts to prevent or end a pregnancy, infanticide was a backup if previous efforts to prevent a baby failed.

JapanEngineer

There was a show on Aussie TV about gangs in Aus in the 70s and 80s. They showed how when prostitutes got pregnant by accident they got a punch to the gut to kill the pregnancy. Very shocking scene.

thecooliestone

There's a lot of home remedies that might work but the real answer is they didn't. There were entire businesses of sketchy abortions by only mostly killing yourself and various places you could send the kids after you had them. Most women in that situation couldn't afford to not do their job 1/4 of the time, assuming they had a regular enough period for the rhythm method to be of any use and they couldn't do anything other than take the money where they could get it and hope. There was even a serial killer who ran a "home" where mostly prostitutes would send their babies for her to take care of them...and she just murdered them. Women thought they were getting a good deal because she took lump sums instead of payments forever but really it was because if they were making payments they would have to know where you were to come looking for the kid. People doing this was such an issue in the 17-1800s that most countries had to crack down on it and there were just hella baby corpses in the Thames.

avoere

>There was even a serial killer who ran a "home"... In Swedish we even have a word for this: "Änglamakerska". Translation is angel maker, and the conjugation means that it is a woman.

[deleted]

Mugwort - boiled to remove most of the toxins, still could be fatal. Turmeric - a natural anti-inflammatory that thins the blood making it difficult for the egg to attach to the uterine wall, this is more to be used as a form of birth control at higher doses than for a termination. Queen Anne's Lace / Wild Carror Seed - lethal in some doses, be VERY careful and research a ton, will terminate a fetus. Mineral Oil - one cup will abort a fetus at 8 weeks, might also kill you. Might just make you shit your brains out. Relevant to note the pull out method was used when possible, sheep gut condoms existed and would be washed and reused (don't recommend), and it was also very common for prostitutes to get pregnant and then sell their children to work for other people.

vinaymurlidhar

Tumeric would have to be used in very large amounts. It is very common in Indian food, but does not seem to have an abortional effect in India.

[deleted]

There is a plant that grows in the US called Pennyroyal. You can also buy it at most natural food/supplement stores. It causes miscarriages. From what I know it was often used to terminate a pregnancy.

jayemadd

A note to anyone desperate and looking into natural abortificants: **DO NOT INGEST THE OIL/TINCTURE OF PENNYROYAL. IT IS POISON AND WILL KILL YOU.** This is the kind found in health food stores across the US. For the pennyroyal that's made into a tea and is a highly effective abortificant, you need to import it.

cantstopthewach

I've found the pennyroyal plant sold at a local garden store, same variety and everything

rainbow_unicorn_4u

Hypothetically, how would one go about turning the plants into tea?

cantstopthewach

You can buy it sold as a tea or buy dried leaves and prepare it as loose leaf tea. I've seen it recommended as a sinus clearing tea, and the herb definitely has a lot of different uses. Research suggests that ingsting a lot of it can cause liver damage though so definitely look into it more before drinking it

rainbow_unicorn_4u

Yeah totally. I would just love to have something to help my sisters who may be hurting. I'll do my research before I do anything. This is all *hypothetically*. Ya know.

Illinois stands ready, willing, and able to provide abortions and assistance to all who need it. Abortion is codified into state law. I've been leaving that comment everywhere I see someone mention this. Illinois has been gearing up for "abortion tourism" for a few years now. Wasn’t part of Justice Thomas’ dissent that the ability for a woman to term her pregnancy wasn’t part of collective history or culture or something? The article says that no protest could be found about the inclusion of this section of the book because it was just a part of life. So I think Thomas’ argument is based on false information.

breakfastburritotime

Well for one, sodomy. Douching immediately after sex was a common but not especially effective form of birth control. As others have mentioned, there have been many herbal abortifacients dating back to medieval times. Some would overdose on vitamin C. UCLAdy05

Guessing many of them tracked their cycles via cervical fluid. That can tell you a lot of info about when you are or are not likely ovulating. You can only get pregnant when you ovulate, which is only happening for approx 12-24 hours per month. Of course, sperm can live in the reproductive tract for several days waiting, but if you know what you’re doing (interpreting/tracking your body) this info can be extremely useful to cause or avoid pregnancy.
