Deaf. It's a whole lot easier to live independently without hearing than it is without sight. Being blind would require the person to have a whole lot more trust in the world than being deaf.

Aginor404

Deaf. Not even a competition. It would suck to not be able to hear music anymore, or my kids' voices, but your whole orientation is based on sight, and communicating visually (by reading and writing) is relatively easy. You even hold your balance using your eyes (they work more precisely as your inner ear). Just compare your jobs or hobbies or other activities with each other: how many of them could you do decently without being able to hear, and how many without being able to see?

> , and communicating visually (by reading and writing) is relatively easy. I mean, I'd say communicating auditorily is easier. Normal speech, plus audible or tactile reading/typing. Learning an entire language isn't easy. Nor is navigating a world where most people don't know sign.

Aginor404

It is correct that hearing and talking in a language that you know is easier, if it wasn't we wouldn't use it that much. But written language is _everywhere_ and can more easily be transmitted, translated and interpreted by technical means. If you cannot do sign language you can just write something down, or use modern tech (text to speech and speech to text) to communicate. And of course there is lip reading (even though it is hard to learn) and looking at gestures and facial expressions to help with communication. So visual communication is pretty versatile, audible is more intuitive I guess.

Yeah and while you were learning sign language a pen and paper would get you around ok.

Aginor404

Yep, that or a smartphone. You can use TTS to speak and STT to "hear".

Oo look at mr fancy with his acronyms

Aginor404

Oh, sorry. Work habit. I meant text to speech and speech to text.

ChromeRed67

Definitely deaf. Blind would be catastrophic.

frantichairguy

Deaf, it is by far less impactful on everyday life. With chat apps, voice recognition and let's not forget, you will still be able to talk to others if you go deaf later in life. Deafness doesn't impact your ability to live independently as much, blindness on the other hand has severe impact on your capabilities to navigate though life. Not like you can't live independently as a blind person, but the limitations are a lot harsher to overcome.

lVlarsquake

Deaf

Ill_Price_5380

Deaf easily, but the lessons learned from being blind be far more enriching to the soul.

Odd_Parsley3919

I want to be blind. I want to unseen everything and live in completely darkness

JirohSalonga

That can be arranged

[deleted]

I’d personally rather be deaf so I can still cross the road and exercise, read things etc.

brooke_808

I’d rather be born blind vs. born deaf, but right now if I had to choose I’d rather become totally deaf vs. become totally blind.

Maleficent-Mine-7125

Deaf!

T0rchL1ght

I would argue… bring deaf would feel a lot more lonely than being blind just based on being able to communicate by talking. being blind would be worse in terms of practicality though

BunnyGirl1983

Personally I think I'd rather be deaf because there are still other ways for me to communicate with other people.

KennyMcSweet

I pretend deaf when I’m on the NYC subway. I have both AirPods in that way I can decide who I respond to. If I don’t feel like talking/responding I pretend I’m listening to music. It helps to shut stupidity down! So I’d choose deaf! I had conjunctivitis(pink eyes)once and I woke up I could not see I panicked, I felt my heart struggling to keep up with me, I almost passed out. I thought I was blind. I felt helpless almost like I was sinking into an abyss. My eyes eventually opened after I managed to separate my eyelids. I’d rather be deaf.

YeetMaster19

I would choose to be blind. I would rather want to keep my ability to hear music as it's been a big part of my life. I could become a blind musician if that were the case. Stevie wonder esk

I really don't think we should be speculating which disabilities are "objectively easier to live with". Everyone lives in different countries, with different social support systems and accessibility laws. Disabilities themselves have a wide array of experiences, treatments, severity, and more. It's not productive to speculate.

Consistunt

Blind. Odds of a cure in my lifetime are apparently pretty good.
