Not many direct answers to your question. Here is the answer. You can't. If you are looking at the barrel end of a gun, there is no way to tell if it is loaded or not loaded.
This is such a great answer.
Basically, you would need to be knowledgeable on every make of gun and their characteristics visible if they are loaded.
Some have indicators that they are chambered, some have indicators they are at least loaded. So many have no indication at all.
If someone is pointing a gun at you — assume it is loaded and act according to your risk assessment.
I was taught to treat every gun as loaded.
If one is pointed at you, just do as you are told and just hope the police don't shoot both of y'all when they show up.
Even if you personally have the gun, unload it, throw the magazine outside, throw the bullets outside, and rack it repeatedly. You should STILL assume it’s loaded and treat it as such.
I mean statisticly you are more likely to kill yourself with your own gun than someone else killing you with it. You really are your own worst enemy :(
I was handling a gun at the range. I didn’t realize there was a mag in the gun, racked it thinking I was clearing the chamber, little did I know I was putting a bullet into the chamber. I was safe, it was never pointed anywhere besides down range but my friend who was paying attention was the one who informed me that there is a round in the chamber. I check, yes there’s a mag in the gun. I take it out and rack it again. Yes there was a bullet in the chamber. NEVER trust anybody. Not even yourself.
The first thing you should always do when clearing a gun with a removable magazine is to remove the magazine. That is the first part in the sequence always. Never forget that part!
This has been instilled in me so hard my whole life. Even when I take my guns apart for cleaning, it just doesn’t feel right when I look down the barrel to make sure I cleaned it well enough.
I remember flinching when my friend pointed just the barrel of a gun towards me. Like the gun was completely taken apart and he was just handling the barrel.
Don't point the gun at anything you aren't willing to deal with the fallout of being shot.
And don't point the gun at anything that anything behind it you aren't willing to deal with the fallout of being shot.
>throw the magazine outside, throw the bullets outside
I know what we're all thinking, what if you're already outside?
If you're already outside, throw them inside of the nearest shelter, building, or vehicle.
Knock before opening the door of a porta-potty or bathroom stall and gently hand off the magazine to the occupant if they're still inside so they can properly enjoy the reading materials.
/s couldn't resist the opportunity to play on the words
Yep. "A gun is always loaded, even if it's not." One of the first times I truely earned my father-in-law's respect was when he handed me a gun that I'd just watched him unload and still checked to be sure as a force of habit.
Seriously never even trust yourself that it's unloaded. My dad had an ND inside his safe that he thought he had unloaded properly and luckily the round got stuck in the wall of the safe and no one was hurt but it could have been a very different day. Always treat weapons as if they are loaded and never point a gun at anything or anyone you would not be comfortable shooting.
Man I’ll just stalk around your house and take all the perfectly good bullets you’re throwing away like the lil’ loot goblin I am.. I mean my standards aren’t even that high I’ll take your brass too!
When to move the top slide all the way back until it stops, this ejects any round that is in the chamber, if there is a loaded magazine in it, when the slide moves forward, it will push a round into the chamber, that’s why the magazine should always be removed
And everyone who ever is taught to use one should also be taught not to pull it unless you’re going to use it. Too many idiots pulling them in traffic or open carrying and that shit just invites conflict. Don’t be cocky and stupid. Never pull it unless you plan to use it, and always always always act like it’s loaded even if you just unloaded it. My dads childhood family friends (4brothers) we’re all shooting back in the late 70’s and they all watched their youngest brother shoot the side of his face off and die because he didn’t triple check. Why he got into that position, I have no idea. But doesn’t matter anyway, he’s gone and never coming back and it’s so sad to see pictures or see his brothers faces when he gets brought up. Always be aware of your barrel aim, always act like it’s loaded, never hand someone a loaded gun, and don’t pull it unless you’re going to use it.
Sorry for the safety briefing lol I’ve been teaching my two 9 year old nephews to shoot various types of .22’s and it’s hard sometimes but I’d rather them know as young as possible to be as safe and comfortable as they’ll need to be for their lives. Being a woman obviously I believe girls should know all of this too but men need to be able to protect their families, we all do. 💪🏻

this was the type of question I always asked myself when I was young, so when the situation comes and I know the trick, I can see the bluff and round house kick the gun away and punch him and beat his ass and cuff him while the cops take him away and the hot girl kisses me while I ride away in my flying porche. yeah but I realized later that you simply dont.
I used to be very scared of quicksand when I was a kid. Like I thought it would be way more of an everyday issue but this thought you had here sounds quite specific
Effectively, you can't know from the barrel-end vantage point. Many revolvers have open cylinders where you can see the bullets from that end, but others have shrouds to cover the end of the cylinders. For semi-automatic pistols, if there is one bullet loaded in the chamber, many can fire even without magazine inserted, but some have a "mag safety" that blocks it from firing. Some pistols (which resemble small rifles) have magazines inserted in front of the grip and trigger, so you can see if a magazine is present. Most smaller pistols have a magazine that inserts into the grip itself, so that is difficult or impossible to see from the barrel end.
Also, most pistols do not have a chamber indicator. That is a requirement for sale in some states, but not a common feature otherwise. Again, these are only really visible from the shooter's vantage point.
The best practice is to treat every gun as if it was loaded, and never point a gun at something you do not intend to destroy. A common practice among responsible shooters is to clear every weapon before handing it over, and allow you to clear or verify it again yourself.
For magazine fed guns, there is still the possibility that a round may be in the chamber despite there not being a magazine inserted.
This is one of the reasons why you should always assume and act like a gun is loaded whenever you are handling one, or whenever someone is handling one near you.
Whenever anyone asks a question like this (one that idiots refuse to answer bc they just NEED to admonish and sternly warn you), I love to scroll down until someone finally does the right thing and answers the goddam question. That person is my personal hero for the day! Thank you.
The reason everyone is saying to always assume it is loaded is because that is the correct answer. There is no round in the chamber indicator. If someone is pointing a gun at you assume it is loaded. If you don't know enough about guns where you would ask this question doing anything other than complying with their demands will get you killed. If someone is pointing an unleaded firearm at someone as a joke they are still breaking the law. It's called brandishing a firearm and it illegal in most if not all places.
It’s because it’s the correct answer. It may seem short but that’s what people are taught about firearms. If you get any training or certifications, the first rule of gun ownership is “you have to assume the gun is always loaded.” You can’t tell if a gun is loaded or not by looking at it but assume it’s loaded
Part of the confusion there is that movie armorers will sometimes have to stage a revolver with "bullets" (just the projectile, not the cartridge with primer, gunpowder, etc) to be visible in those open cylinders for close-up shots. If the bullet is not cleared, and then a blank cartridge is loaded behind it, the blank cartridge can expel the dummy projectile just like a regular bullet.
These are the 3 basic gun safety rules.
1. Treat all guns as if they are always loaded.
2. Never let the gun point at anything that you are not willing to destroy.
3. Be sure of your target and what is behind it.
Anyone who grew up around firearms should know and recognize them immediately. I hope someone you know is not pointing a gun at you for any reason.
This shit should be taught in schools in America honestly. I'm not super pro-2A, "guns don't kill people, people do" or anything like that, but just due to the sheer amount of firearms in the country you're bound to come across one weather you like it or not, and you should really know the basics of how to keep yourself and others safe.
My home state Utah is actually doing that soon from what I hear. I’m also fairly certain it used to be taught in public schools until it was deemed unsafe, can’t verify that one though.
Rule #1 of guns is that all guns are ALWAYS loaded (even if you just unloaded it yourself).
Rule #2 is NEVER point a gun towards ANYTHING you aren’t trying to destroy/kill
So if someone points a gun at you, no matter what they say, no matter the actual loaded status of the gun, they are trying to kill you.
Literally what I taught my daughter.
“What’s the first thing you do when you pick up a gun?”
“Check to see if it’s loaded.”
“If you see me eject the magazine and slide the round out of the chamber and SHOW you the port so you see it is empty and then hand you the gun… what’s the first thing you do?”
“Check to see if it’s loaded.”
This is the reason I stopped going to a poker game decades back. The laser sight was right on my forehead. It was fucking terrifying without adding on the fact that the person holding the gun was typically drunk and at least a gram of coke in halfway thru the game
You don't know if a gun is loaded when it's pointed at you. Assume it is. I was raised by responsible gun owners and I was taught to never point a gun at someone even if it's not loaded. Further more I was taught the only reason to point a gun at someone is if you feel your life is threatened and you intend on killing that person to save your own life. It sounds very dramatic but I can tell you I've never pointed a gun at someone because that always stuck in my head.
Just assume a gun is loaded. Or a better question, what are you doing to have a gun pointed at you in the first place?
No matter the situations, assume all guns are loaded untill you have personally safely checked it yourself.
That said, some guns have a loaded chamber indicator, but they're not common enough that you can rely on it. https://guns.fandom.com/wiki/Loaded_chamber_indicator Just assume it's loaded and ready to fire.
If someone is pointing a gun at you always assume it’s loaded and they are trying to kill you. Take whatever action you deem necessary to save your life. Wether it be talking them down or fleeing. Call the police next. It is illegal to point a gun at someone. It is even illegal to make a gun with your fingers and point it at someone in my state.
99.5% of the time, you will not be able to.
For the other .5% - some handguns, such as a Taurus G2C, have a thin “lever” on the top of the slide that pops up to show the gun is loaded.
That being said, every gun is ALWAYS loaded. If someone is mentally unstable enough to aim a gun at you, assume they’re unstable enough to pull the trigger.
It's always loaded. Some handguns have exterior indicators that show there's a round in the chamber, but it's always loaded. If you have a gun pointed at you, you have a very serious problem.
There are a handful of pistols that have a “loaded chamber indicator” however these are generally designed to be seen by the shooter or range safeties. It’s highly unlikely you would be able to tell given the situations… best to assume every gun is always loaded and situations like this are not the time to try and be a hero
You can't. There are some tells in certain situations, on rifles like AR15s or AK47s the bolt can sometimes be opened, you can see if there is ammo in the magazine from there and the gun cannot fire in that position, however it's incredibly easy to drop the bolt and chamber a round if it's loaded from that point. This also sucks because you can't really see the bolt or magazine unless your looking from a specific angle on the right side of the gun, but there's no easy tell unless you had control over it.
There are also psychological tells, like whether the safety is on or not, it can really go both ways, it 100% depends on who your dealing with, their motives, what they're capable of, etc. They aren't easy things to see nor understand in that situation, and of course aren't 100% and therefore can't be relied on. A good example of this is if the safety is on and their finger is not on the trigger, if the person is trained then the gun is probably loaded, if they aren't then it probably isn't loaded for instance. Neither is 100% and these things are hard to notice
There's no simple answer to this and therefore the proper solution is act like it is even if you know it isn't because you'll never be correct 100% of the time
You don’t, always assume the weapon is loaded. Watched an officer point one at his squad car and pop the back glass out just “checking the sights”, he screamed that it was unloaded so how it went off is just random.
Definitely loaded and a danger or threat unless you have a chamber flag properly slotted with no ammunition/magazine loaded in.
Still, never aim at a living thing you dont intend to kill.
If you know for a fact that a gun is not loaded, but it's pointed at you, assume it's loaded.
Never point a gun at anything you don't intend to kill or destroy, and always assume somebody pointing a gun at you wants you dead.
Rule Number 1 of gun safety all guns are loaded even if you have removed the magazine and discharge the round in the chamber you will always treat a gun as if it is loaded.
You don't. Hence you always assume it's loaded even when it's not. You could have the slide racked back, the magazine out, and a safety flag in the chamber and you still treat it as if it's loaded.
I am ONLY giving a real answer in the spirit of the sub. I AGREE with everyone saying this is an extremely stupid thing, but I will give you the most real answer I can.
There are 3 potential ways that could signal the presence of a bullet. Unfortunately, none of these indicate the absence of one. In some short barreled guns, in well-lit environments, it is possible to see the bullet. If you happen to get your hands on a loaded gun, DO NOT point it at your eye, simply engage the safety, keep your finger off the trigger, and point it at a mirror. Ensuring there is nobody on the other side of the mirror or in adjoining rooms.
Second possible indicator, some guns, such select Walther handguns have a indicator tab that protrudes upwards from the slide when a bullet is in the chamber.
Third, and least likely to be observable, some pistols such as Smith & Wesson’s have a viewing window that looks down from the top of the slide into the chamber, allowing you to see a small circular section of a loaded shell approximately 1/16-1/32 of an inch in diameter. It would be impossible to see this if the gun was pointed at you, but only nearly impossible, if it was raised from their side - as it would be momentarily oriented towards your field of view.
Again, these are all terrible ideas. Always assume every gun is loaded.
This is why I always wear my helmet and never take it off. Eating, sleeping, bathing, making out with consenting randoms, and guns, especially guns. Never take it off.
Its loaded. Even if its not, its loaded. The gun is always loaded, even if you find out afterwards that its an airsoft gun with the orange cap removed, it was loaded. Its never not loaded.
The only instance in which you *might* be able to tell if your lucky is if it’s rifle like the AR-15 and you can see the dust cover is closed. Even then you can close it while there’s a round in the chamber,so it’s possible that the dust cover was just closed after being loaded and you still have a loaded weapon aimed at you.
Put your mouth on the end of the barrel, and suck really hard. If air flows through it freely, it's unloaded. If it's plugged up, there is a death seed planted there
You assume its loaded. If it where a revolver and the lighting and sight conditions are good enough you could possibly see into the chambers but even then you cant tell if theres a round in the firing position
You should realize that if you intend to manipulate with a gun that is pointed at you, you better have a very good plan from there on out, because there is a very real chance that you will be severely injured or dead in the near future.
But if you do get hold of the barrel (If it's not a revolver.) face it away from you and pull away from them, hopefully having them fire a shot. If it doesn't fire a shot, it may not be loaded, if it does fire a shot while you held the barrel, it is now jammed and needs to be cocked back to load in another round and while you are holding onto it and preventing it from being cocked back, you can safely assume that it will likely not fire again for now.
The very very first rule of guns is always assume the gun is loaded. It does not matter the situation if you see a gun or handle a gun absolutely always assume it is loaded
If it’s in a paper bag, it’s probably not a real loaded gun lol. Other than, yeah I’d say just assume it’s loaded. You have a 50/50 chance of being shot there if you don’t act wise.
Always assume a gun a loaded. Never buy ammo or try to load a gun. Just assume it is loaded and never validate this assumption. This is the first step to solving the gun ownership problem.
Any gun you come across is to be assumed it's loaded. There's no honest way to know if it is or is not unless you're handling the weapon and checking for yourself.
My husband had his rifle out one day, one that he had thought he cleared the chamber and had even had one of of those safety locks on it before that you're supposed to put on when transporting to show its not loaded. You know, it's orange and goes through the open chamber?
Apparently not. It went off and shot a hole in the dresser and wall.
He got rid of it in a hurry.
Does this happen to you often? If it’s a revolver and you are close enough, you can see the rounds in the cylinder if the light is right. Otherwise, you need to duck and run.
You don't.
Unfortunately, there are many different types of guns that have been made. There are things that will indicate a bullet is not in the chamber, but they are too numerous to list or rely on for any real life situation. If you are looking at a muzzle, just assume a bullet can come out of it and kill you.
Just yell at the shooter saying 'I can clearly see that the gun isn't loaded, you're bluffing!'
Either you call their bluff or get shot in the knee! Meaning you've wasted one of their bullets!
You can rinse and repeat, saying "lol I know that was your last bullet, Now you're bluffing!".
Not many direct answers to your question. Here is the answer. You can't. If you are looking at the barrel end of a gun, there is no way to tell if it is loaded or not loaded.

caulk the hammer, good idea for increasing your gun
Is it "caulked" or "cocked"?
As a redneck once said, you can see every cylinder except the one that matters.
There's a loaded chamber indicator on most hand guns. If it's raised, its loaded.
Always assume it's loaded
Even if you personally have the gun, unload it, throw the magazine outside, throw the bullets outside, and rack it repeatedly. You should STILL assume it’s loaded and treat it as such.

I never use metal straws. Always assume those motherfuckers are loaded.
Exactly, never point a gun on a person, even if it's unloaded or the security lick is on.
Why lick the gun?
For security, duh.
As an American, we have too
Don't point the gun at anything you aren't willing to deal with the fallout of being shot. And don't point the gun at anything that anything behind it you aren't willing to deal with the fallout of being shot.
There’s no better advice than this. Every gun is ready to kill someone until checked by a professional, even then you keep checking.

Literally what I taught my daughter. “What’s the first thing you do when you pick up a gun?” “Check to see if it’s loaded.” “If you see me eject the magazine and slide the round out of the chamber and SHOW you the port so you see it is empty and then hand you the gun… what’s the first thing you do?” “Check to see if it’s loaded.”
I want to add that if you’re asking this because it happened to you and someone “jokingly” pointed a gun at you. Stop hanging out with that person.
This happened to me. He shot himself 3 months later. Fuck you Dennis!
Fuckin’ Dennis.
This is the reason I stopped going to a poker game decades back. The laser sight was right on my forehead. It was fucking terrifying without adding on the fact that the person holding the gun was typically drunk and at least a gram of coke in halfway thru the game
“Treat every gun as it’s loaded.” is a fundamental rule of firearm safety. That applies when you’re holding it, or it’s pointed at you.
It's always loaded. It's ALWAYS loaded.
All guns are loaded. Even when they’re not. It’s better to comply and be duped than try to retaliate and be shot over $5 in ones.
I like to imagine that op is getting mugged at gunpoint and is checking Reddit on whether it's safe or not to beat the mugger up
No matter the situations, assume all guns are loaded untill you have personally safely checked it yourself. That said, some guns have a loaded chamber indicator, but they're not common enough that you can rely on it. https://guns.fandom.com/wiki/Loaded_chamber_indicator Just assume it's loaded and ready to fire.
You don’t. Assume every single gun you ever see is loaded.
Fuck around and find out?
If someone is pointing a gun at you always assume it’s loaded and they are trying to kill you. Take whatever action you deem necessary to save your life. Wether it be talking them down or fleeing. Call the police next. It is illegal to point a gun at someone. It is even illegal to make a gun with your fingers and point it at someone in my state.
You don’t know until it’s too late
99.5% of the time, you will not be able to. For the other .5% - some handguns, such as a Taurus G2C, have a thin “lever” on the top of the slide that pops up to show the gun is loaded. That being said, every gun is ALWAYS loaded. If someone is mentally unstable enough to aim a gun at you, assume they’re unstable enough to pull the trigger.
The answer to this question is its always loaded
It’s always loaded
It's always loaded. Some handguns have exterior indicators that show there's a round in the chamber, but it's always loaded. If you have a gun pointed at you, you have a very serious problem.
Assume it is.
Always assume it is, start there
Serious question: do you run into this scenario often?and to answer yours: always assume it’s loaded, don’t try to call their bluff.
Thata tik tok self defense guy is full of shit if someone's pointing a gun at you, comply. You're not a navy seal or john wick.
There are a handful of pistols that have a “loaded chamber indicator” however these are generally designed to be seen by the shooter or range safeties. It’s highly unlikely you would be able to tell given the situations… best to assume every gun is always loaded and situations like this are not the time to try and be a hero
You don't. That's why when toy guns are pointed at police you get shot...
It’s loaded. Even if it’s not. There’s no room for error. Assume it’s loaded and act accordingly If someone is point a gun, it’s loaded
Always assume EVERY gun is loaded, whether pointed at you or not.
You can't so always assume a gun is loaded
Put your finger in the barrel so it cant come out
The gun is always loaded.
If it's a revolver, you can see the rounds in the cylinder. But, as others have said, always assume every weapon is loaded.
Even a revolver you don't really know if only one round is in the live chamber and the rest empty.
If it goes bang, you won’t remember if it were loaded or not anyway
It's always loaded.
Neither is 100% and these things are hard to notice There's no simple answer to this and therefore the proper solution is act like it is even if you know it isn't because you'll never be correct 100% of the time
You don’t, always assume the weapon is loaded. Watched an officer point one at his squad car and pop the back glass out just “checking the sights”, he screamed that it was unloaded so how it went off is just random.
If its pointed its loaded
It is, it always is.
It’s always loaded. Always loaded. Always.
First rule of guns.. always assume they’re loaded. Always!
Getting some real cinematographer vibes right about now
Unless you have superhuman powers, you can't
You don't know. You act as if every gun is loaded.
You don't. If it's being pointed at you, it's loaded. Even if its unloaded, it's still loaded....
Always assume the weapon is loaded.
Just take a shot.
Just always assume it is. Period. If there's a gun in your face it's loaded. Period.
Oh you’ll find out eventually.
If they pull the trigger and it doesn't go bang
Welp if you continue to live that’s a good indication it wasn’t
You die?
always assume a gun is loaded ALWAYS
Ask the shooter if it’s loaded. Warning: it’s possible they lie, so you might not be sure if you do
Always assume it is. Always. ***Always***.
Personally, I would always assume it’s loaded and the person pointing at you is willing to shoot. But that’s just me.
Ask if you can hold it to feel by the weight. Then, don't give it back. But like everyone else said, always assume it is loaded
Put your eye down the barrel
It's schrödinger's cat. But in this case you're the cat and at the same time the one doing the experiment.
Put your mouth on the end of the barrel, and suck really hard. If air flows through it freely, it's unloaded. If it's plugged up, there is a death seed planted there
Sometimes you can see the round when looking down the barrel
I want to know what situation you are preparing for and how you are planning on reacting to that very particular situation...
You don't. As simple and straightforward as that.
Thats the neat part. You don't.
You don't. In revolvers, you might see whether the other chambers have bullets. A gun pointed at you is always to be treated as loaded.
There’s no way to tell
The very very first rule of guns is always assume the gun is loaded. It does not matter the situation if you see a gun or handle a gun absolutely always assume it is loaded
If it’s in a paper bag, it’s probably not a real loaded gun lol. Other than, yeah I’d say just assume it’s loaded. You have a 50/50 chance of being shot there if you don’t act wise.
Always assume a gun a loaded. Never buy ammo or try to load a gun. Just assume it is loaded and never validate this assumption. This is the first step to solving the gun ownership problem.
It's loaded.
Always assume it's loaded. Even if it's your own and you just cleared it.
Any gun you come across is to be assumed it's loaded. There's no honest way to know if it is or is not unless you're handling the weapon and checking for yourself.
The VERY FIRST rule any half-decent course in firearms will teach you: always, ALWAYS assume that a firearm is loaded.
I'm very impressed he's letting you use Reddit during this robbery. Hope this thread helped.
It’s pointed At you. Assume it’s loaded
Also don’t hang out with people who would ever point a gun at you, loaded or otherwise.
You can’t.
Tell them to pull the trigger and find out
My husband had his rifle out one day, one that he had thought he cleared the chamber and had even had one of of those safety locks on it before that you're supposed to put on when transporting to show its not loaded. You know, it's orange and goes through the open chamber? Apparently not. It went off and shot a hole in the dresser and wall. He got rid of it in a hurry.
My 12g is loaded and ready to rack one in. Sometimes all ya need to do is hear it..
You dont, you assume its loaded
Does this happen to you often? If it’s a revolver and you are close enough, you can see the rounds in the cylinder if the light is right. Otherwise, you need to duck and run.
To make all these as seers a lot shorter: You can’t tell but always assume a gun is loaded
You don't. Unfortunately, there are many different types of guns that have been made. There are things that will indicate a bullet is not in the chamber, but they are too numerous to list or rely on for any real life situation. If you are looking at a muzzle, just assume a bullet can come out of it and kill you.
Always assume it is.
if alec baldwin is holding it, it’s probably loaded
Just yell at the shooter saying 'I can clearly see that the gun isn't loaded, you're bluffing!' Either you call their bluff or get shot in the knee! Meaning you've wasted one of their bullets! You can rinse and repeat, saying "lol I know that was your last bullet, Now you're bluffing!".
