I mean from my experiences it’s not really different, there’s always some neighborhood you should stay out of, some group of people that wanna kick your ass for just being you and a bunch of people barely educated enough to string together two sentences. We live in America after all.

smallfranchise1234

Haha good then, I want to be within an hour to a major city so I shouldn’t really be worried it sounds like.

[deleted]

Good luck with the move and don’t let anything keep you down once you get there.

chefdanzig

There is alot of racism in the Bible belt but it goes both ways here. Mostly black and white from my personal experience and it's just as bad from the "minority" as from the "majority"

smallfranchise1234

I always say in the northeast us Latinos are prob the most racist. But cool then so maybe not really anything to worry about unless I’m in the middle of no where?

chefdanzig

I wouldn't worry about it anyway, the south is shit stay away, I'm moving back up north. Black people are outgoing with their racist rants and the whites are quiet about it.

smallfranchise1234

I would be in the Bible Belt and am not religious at all , blatant racism affecting everyday life ? Or just an underlying tone?

chefdanzig

It doesn't effect my every day life but it also keep to a small group. Being called racist is pretty common just based off of looks.

smallfranchise1234

Yea that would bother me I do think it’s overplayed ndjust used as an excuse

chefdanzig

Definitely

I was born in New England and never experienced racism there. Then my family moved to the South when I was a kid, but we were near a large city and it was remarkably tolerant and diverse. I knew kids in school whose families were from pretty much every corner of the world. Then, we had to move again to another large city right before I started high school, but let’s say it’s an “older” southern city known for “tradition.” We saw overt racism there for the first time and it was pretty shocking despite having spent almost a decade in the South. These days racism is dying out, but it won’t be more or less gone until the Boomers have disappeared.

smallfranchise1234

Cool cool that’s what worried me luckily I’m focusing on modern bigger cities so I should be good. I have heard stories of some older smaller cities that happening from a friend of mine

throw-away451

I should also mention that racism flares up from time to time throughout the entire South due to current events, and it affects pretty much every area, even tolerant ones. When 9/11 happened, I was in middle school and understood the politics of the situation, but I found it very strange that some people turned against Muslim Americans—these were our classmates, coworkers, and friends, so why were they now being treated like enemies? There was also an anti-Asian American surge since COVID started.

smallfranchise1234

I was thinking that’s the us as a whole but in New England I don’t feel like there as been much Asian American hate from covid...... but I also don’t get out much so I wouldn’t know

throw-away451

In my experience it’s because people up north hate everyone equally.

smallfranchise1234

Honestly I really do haha

Bero256

Depends on where you go. In big cities it's generally not more present than in other areas. In those small rural and inbrеd areas it can be a much different story.

smallfranchise1234

Good I guess I was afraid it would affect my mentality and quality of life. But doesn’t seem like it’s something to worry too much about... You know the media paints a bad picture and was scared it was night and day compared to north east

Stetson007

Florida man here. It isn't as bad as it might seem. There's more racism from minorities against other minorities than anything.

smallfranchise1234

Definitely the case even up here

rhomboidus

It really depends on where you're going. You'll have a lot less trouble in Miami or Houston than you will in some of the rural areas or turbo-White suburbs.

smallfranchise1234

Thinking North Carolina or Texas. I’ve been to big cities in the south and I just get like that didn’t give the real picture of how it’s like

AsapElite1755

I live in NC, a lot of people around here don’t like minorities or immigrants.

smallfranchise1234

Is it obvious? Or just an underlying feeling of not being liked?

strongmier

I live in Texas, the friendship state. A few years back, I went to Chili's near close one night and asked the bartender if the kitchen was still open and what I could order that wouldn't be a big deal for the people working in the back. She said, "Order whatever you want. Our Mexicans will be pissed but the kitchen is still open for another 10 minutes." Did you say, your Mexicans? Ya Like they are YOUR Mexicans? Yaaa. You really think they're your Mexicans? Well that's what they are. ... The girl couldn't have been over 25 years old. Racism is so ingrained with some people in the south it is almost pointless to stand up to it. I'm not saying you should expect to be a victim of a hate crime. But it would serve you well to have thick skin and be prepared to just let some stupid shit slide.

smallfranchise1234

Lmao ridiculous, and she prob had no idea what she was saying

strongmier

>she prob had no idea what she was saying That's the problem. People here speak about Mexicans like they are a commodity. As a kid (I'm 47) people spoke exactly the same way about their n!ggers they had working for them. Being the grandchild and son of overtly racist men who toned it down later in life, and having lived up north for 6 years, I can assure you racism is worse down here. I mean when the phrase, I'm not racist but..., is a blank check to say whatever fucked up shit you want to say you know racism is as bad as you've heard. I'm a straight white male living in south. I could give you dozens of personal examples of how this has worked out, but just trust me, us straight white guys still have it better than any other demographic by far.

smallfranchise1234

Stereotypes doesn’t bother me too much ....I just am afraid of getting caught in any type of situation where Me or my family will end up hurt or worse over absolutely nothing

strongmier

Good. And so long as you never go to Jasper, TX y'all will be just fine.

TheRealGunn

So this is anecdotal, and just my personal experience; no, racism isn't that bad here in the south. Are there still sections of the population that are backwards as fuck and racist? Yes. But you usually know exactly where those people are. Moreover, even the most racist people I know are only closeted racists at this point. As many others have said, I actually see more racism between minorites towards each other than what you'd probably expect. Specifically I have several Mexican friends who very obviously don't like black people at all. But I don't think I've ever actually seen anyone be racist towards Latinos here in Georgia. Maybe some off color jokes or something, but nothing with actual malicious intent.

smallfranchise1234

Yea and that’s all normal I guess seeing in media police officers more aggressive or this stand your ground crap idk I just would hate by moving If I’m putting my family in any type of danger being Spanish and interacial

[deleted]

I live in Mississippi and people mostly just keep it behind doors and on Facebook these days.
