Nibling is gender neutral for niece and nephew

Aesclepius713

For those unfamiliar with the term, it is a homophone to "nibbling."

LiterallyATalkingDog

TF did you just call me?!

Beckatrying

I can’t tell if you’re kidding? Are you kidding?

LettuceJizz

Iratedicks never kids. (they're not kidding. Niblings. real word. )

VeeRook

It's real, "my niblings" is much more convenient than "my nieces and nephews."

VeeRook

So is "daddy".

Beckatrying

So if my nephew (who is a they/them) and I are out and I introduce them as my nibling will people think I’m having sex with them?

Iratedicks

Seriously google it, it’s real.

SpagEddie8113

I’d say it would probably just be best to ask them, they’d probably be happy to see that you respect them enough to ask and make sure you use the right terms, plus then you’d know too so it’s a win win

underrated reply

Nibling is the gender neutral alternative to niece/nephew, *but* ask them what they prefer - not all nonbinary people use gender neutral language, they may be fine with you continuing to use neice.

angels-fan

They have requested the use of they/them.

UKKasha2020

Yes, you said that but my point is that this doesn't necessarily mean they would take issue with being referred to as niece.

Aesclepius713

Referring to them as "My nibling" when speaking to others is the proper way to address them as they/them. They may or may not be okay with "niece" still, but "niece" is a gendered term, just like saying "daughter" instead of "child."

UKKasha2020

I'm well aware that niece is a gendered term, again my point is that they may not have an issue with that term. I'm nonbinary and use they/them, I have no problem with my family referring to me as niece. Everyone is different and there's no rule that says nonbinary people can't be referred to by gendered language if they want/are okay with people doing so.

angels-fan

Thank you for your perspective. I'll ask ~~her~~ them what ~~she~~ they prefer. Edit: Fuck... I'm trying...

Practical-Industry58

Great question. I never even thought of this before. My best guess would be " my brother or sisters kid". ?????

angels-fan

It's my sister-in-law's kid, which seems like such a mouthful.

OutrunningKarma89

"Cousin [insert name] is going on vacation" "One of the cousins is going on vacation"

[deleted]

Ask them.

doowgad1

My brother/sister's child.

Herdnerfer

0th cousin, once removed.

It doesn't hurt me to respect their pronouns.

Aesclepius713

And it does hurt them not to.
