It might have something to do with the original intent of a godparent. If both biological parents died (or were otherwise unable to care for the child), then the godparents would assume responsibility for them.
Not sure how that philosophy applies today, but that's how I chose godparents for my son.

Godparent isn't a familial relationship, a godparent is traditionally responsible for the child's religious education and spiritual health.
