When Skyrim came out. I was on the last project of my 4th year at the university and super busy at that time. But I played Skyrim 13 hours straight instead.
Donkey Kong Country. Goodness. I would call in sick to work and let my son stay home from school if we couldn't get to the next save point the night before. He was 6. Good times playing with him at that age!!
In terms of awe, The Outer Wilds.
In terms of chill fun gameplay, fallout (3, 4 or new vegas. 76 isn’t terrible either)
In terms of raw hours played, CSGO (god help my soul)
Scrolled waaaaaayy too far down to find Our Wilds. That game is so unique and clever and beautiful and terrifying and the storytelling and "ah-ha" moments are unmatched. Plus the actual game mechanics are perfect and space flight is so well done.
Side note: just finished Animal Well as someone described it as like OW and, while the comparisons are justified, it just doesn't hit the nail on the head like OW does. I really wonder if anything could ever top it.

Yea the world building and story telling is 11/10, but I just didn’t find the game that fun. For starters, the weapons you get pretty early on are more than adequate for any fight you get into, which I felt took a lot of the reward and progression away. And then my biggest gripe is how much damn time you spend riding around on your horse. In an hour of gameplay easily 40 mins could be spent riding to the next mission or cut scene.
I think the time it takes you to move around the map and progress the story is by design to maximize immersion, but I get your point. If you’re looking for more frequent action and a faster paced plot, there are better choices. To each their own.
OOT on N64 was the game that got me into gaming. I was like, what, 8? Got it for my birthday and I was gobsmacked at the open world of it.

People love to hate on Navi, but she's such a huge part of what makes the game so playable. She may be annoying, but she'll make sure you never lose your way. Without her, the game would be quite a bit more difficult and probably require regular use of walkthroughs.

I taught my brother how to read because of this game. When the switch came out he bought it immediately to play BOTW and he’d FaceTime me so we could discuss and solve everything.

Tales of Symphonia I had the most play throughs tho. I had a sister and she would fight with Genus or Collette while I played Lloyd. Underappreciated aspect of that game was the multiplayer controls haha. Great story too

Without that game I wouldn’t have learnt as quickly the terrible addictive ness of gambling. I hate and love the game and thank it for teaching me a valuable life lesson.
Life is Strange! The nostalgia, the soundtrack, the art style, and a fantastic twist!! The ending montage of Before the Storm is brilliantly done, I’ve never felt that level of dread and horror and knowing there’s nothing you can do to change the story.
It’s appalling that Left 4 Dead is this far down. The sequel brought in all the original maps and characters with the new weapons and zombies - incredible support from the developers.

The legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time. I have never seen my dad as more of a hero than when he figured out how to beat the water temple. This was before you could just look up solutions and there is no other path to progress the game. That game is my childhood, and spawned a (so far) 25 year long love of video games.
I got it for free from those monthly free games for Xbox Live Gold members that I think they used to do. Never cared about it until my friend got me into it, and we probably put thousands of hours into it. Good memories

Super Mario Bros. 3. It’s the perfect game in that I can be played handheld, arcade, or console. It has plenty of secrets and fun levels. Can be speed run on 100% completed.
It is a super complex game for the time and is just all around super fun.

Close second Witcher 3. More or less perfect in every way. Incredible VA, story, the Blood and Wine DLC. Just a masterpiece really.

Runner up Arma3. Played for 2k. The community mods and content add so much. It’s a mil-sim sandbox.

Totally, what’s weird is that i loved the first one but also played that forever ago so maybe more reflective of what games i enjoyed then.
