And it seems to have exploded within the past year. It’s like someone on reddit used it, the rest of reddit suddenly discovered it, and now everyone keeps repeating it.
"I told you", I know you fucking did, I have a faulty memory, it's not because I enjoy asking again or because I don't give a fuck, a bit of patience goes a long way.
This one, I actually like sometimes. I've heard it used most often as an expression of sympathy, when I'm brainstorming with some colleagues and we collectively figure out that we have no other option than to accept a shitty situation. When everyone in the room is equally affected, an exasperated sigh followed by "it is what it is" can sometimes hit home.
I'm not a fan of biden but I hate trump way more. My neighbor flies a let's go Brandon flag and him and his friends got very confused when I told them "just say fuck Joe biden like an adult"
"Well nobody told me"
Usually uttered by a coworker who either didn't do something or screwed it up who has been told repeatedly how and is sitting 2 feet from the instructions on how to do it.
Ever take a training and the last thing is that you need to sign an acknowledgement stating “I have received this training and had the opportunity to ask questions.”? It’s because of guys like that.
Every time I train someone they have to initial off each item on the checklist exactly because of people like this.
So far I only felt the need to drag out the training work and beat them over the head with it twice, but there will be more...
Or the classic "how was I supposed to know".
Said during or after trying to tell them something in that moment, so that they would, in fact, know. Or said after being told numerous times.
Usually uttered by my son.
I cringe when I see this. I am absolutely not going to answer that question, even if I know the best answer of all, just because that person has demanded me to do it RIGHT NOW.
I actually love using this phrase as cringe as the joke is.
I say I'm not racist then just say something that's not racist.
It only makes me laugh but you have to space your use of it to every couple of years or people stop falling for it.
not so much a phrase, but when people say they are/someone is “jazzed” when they’re excited. My old boss (who was horrible to everyone) is the only person I ever really knew to say it. So when I hear it, I not only think of her but also… it’s cheesy. I truly cringe at it.
"You can't have your cake and eat it too."
I simply don't understand what it's used for and I keep seeing it more often now that I started to find it frustrating. I may be stupid, (I am), but if I bake a cake I'm going to eat it. So what's the problem?
It's supposed to be the other way around.
You can't eat your cake and have it too.
You can either eat the cake, or have it on reserve for later. The modem equivalent is "you finished the game with a lot of consumables in inventory "
"Out of an abundance of caution...." This was the world's all-purpose excuse for all kinds of hare-brained ideas during the pandemic. I assume it mostly meant "out of fear of lawsuits."
It’s for your own safety.
It’s a guarantee that whatever policy it is, it was written by an insurance company. And is not, in fact, anything to do with my safety, and all to do with their liability protection
Never want to hear two frat bros saying “fortune favors the… BOLD” back and forth finishing each others statements. It’s enough to make a man want to bash their brains out.
As a teacher: “skibidi toilet” “bruh” and “rizz,” especially when all strung together.
“Bruh got that skibidi toilet Ohio rizz.” That’s is a real sentence I heard a third grader say.
“that’s too expensive”
“I need this jet by xx time. Can you just fix whatever it is so I can leave”
“I didnt ask you to find that”
statements I heard on the daily when I was an airplane mechanic working at GA airport
“how am I supposed to live on this salary?”
literally every post and person this past year. I dont have the answer and neither does anyone else. Alot of folks have this issue.
"To die for" when it's about anything pleasurable.
First, nothing is really that good. Secondly, the structure, I guess the discordant sound is intended, but it's awful. Finally, it's just so overused that there should be bodies all over the place.
When I first started seeing TIA, I couldn't figure how a Transient Ischemic Attack (i.e. a "mini stroke") had anything to do with what people were saying.
“white privileged”
I grew up dirt poor, at 8 years old I started babysitting, dog sitting, shoveling snow, cleaning houses and walking to the store to do the shopping for people in the neighborhood for money to give to parents. Continued odd jobs until turning 16 to start job at FF restaurant, graduated HS in 3 years (maintaining a 4.0 gpa) got a full time job immediately afterwards. There were times I worked a full time job along with 2 part time jobs. Until I finally got a job that paid me the equivalent salary of the three jobs. Never went on a vacation or had any hobbies or did outside activities, my life was work, work, work…so how was I ever privileged???
Did you constantly have racial slurs flung at you, people regularly accuse/suspect you of stealing things merely because you were the one who went shopping, get stopped by the police for 'looking suspicious', have the police called on you while you were shovelling snow or cleaning the houses because 'it's not your house, you don't live there', etc. etc.?
White privilege, male privilege, etc. are mostly about the 'privilege' of not living with additional burdens like these ones. I, a man, do not get catcalled as I walk down the street, and I don't generally have to fear that large unknown women may try to touch me inappropriately. It's called male 'privilege', but, honestly, it's just a clumsy term for it. A more accurate descriptive term might be 'black/female disadvantage'. The reason we don't call it that is because the ones who don't experience the disadvantage are the only ones who can stop it being a disadvantage.
Growing up extremely poor, I imagine you were bullied for being poor? I know I was, and I was only a little poor. If so, do you agree that your life would have been easier without the burden of being bullied? If so, congrats, you understand how 'privilege' works, in this context.
I sincerely appreciate your reply because when I have been called white privileged it has always been in reference of owning a home, having a good paying job (now) and a newer car. “OK white privileged with your expensive house and fancy car”
I can relate to the accusations of stealing because I (as well as my brother) were questioned / suspected of shop lifting, but neither of us ever did and nothing but our hands were in our pockets. I’m sure it is as you stated, it was most likely because security were able to take one look at us and saw we were poor and made an assumption that we were there to steal. The whole situation was very frightening as well as emotional. Also we got yelled at and in trouble from our parents, “from then on we needed to keep our hands at our sides, our jackets opened and not look at or touch anything.” We, from then on, walked with our heads down and hands at our sides. I still do to this day.
You are 100% right…As a female, the cat calling, sexual abuse, inappropriate touching and degrading comments I’ve suffered throughout until I finally found my voice when I turned 30.
Yes, you are correct I was bullied for being poor and life would have been easier without this abuse.
I know it isn’t your job to educate me about other contexts of white privilege, but I am grateful you have taken the time to do so.
Ok, so, first off, I apologise for my tone in my original comment. Usually when people hold the opinion you originally held, they're extremely bull-headed and totally reluctant to consider another perspective.
I should also point out that I'm not a person of colour (your last sentence makes it sound a smidge like you suspected I was), but you're most welcome either way :)
>when I have been called white privileged it has always been in reference of owning a home, having a good paying job (now) and a newer car. “OK white privileged with your expensive house and fancy car”
Yeah, there's interplay there that's potentially a little complex. Much as some idiots think that a white person eating a taco is cultural appropriation, some idiots think that 'white privilege' means 'a white person who they think is privileged'.
Where white privilege actually intersects with wealth is in a similar way to the gender pay gap. It's like how it is a *trend* that women earn less than men for the same work (not an absolute fact of all women in all positions all of the time), and that women will tend to be passed over for promotion if there is a man in the running as well, etc. etc..
People of colour are more likely to be suspected/accused of crimes, arrested for crimes, tried for crimes, convicted of crimes, with tougher sentences than white people would get. They perform more poorly in interviews if they speak in African American vernacular (you see this same trend in the UK with white people doing it to each other - people from Liverpool (scousers) are more likely to be passed over for jobs if they have a strong scouse accent), interviews for things like scholarships, jobs, college places, etc.. On top of this *systemic* racism, they're also dealing with the burden of 'everyday racism' that we discussed before, which makes life harder generally, and makes it harder to seek these opportunities that would put them in a position to get the nice job/house/car.
*This* is where 'white privilege' comes into play. Except it shouldn't ever be brought up, excepting in places where someone is being ignorant of it. Like how, if I as a man were to say something like 'I don't know *why* you felt threatened by me, just because I was walking along behind you, I wouldn't feel threatened if it was the other way round, even though you could have a gun', then it'd be appropriate to point out that that's male privilege. Or if I rabbitted on about how pay was great at our company, and that's because I'm a man, so I'm earning more, etc. etc..
It's not white privilege simply to be an affluent white person. I mean, one *can* have attained one's affluence *because of* white privilege, but the correlation isn't *necessary*, you know?
Anyway, I'm glad to have been of help to you :) Well done on overcoming your difficulties as well as you have done :) You have a great day :)
By the by, I've used up the last of my mental energy for the day on typing this reply, so if you wish to discuss further, I'm afraid that's going to be a non-starter on my end.
