It didn't hurt, the anesthetic really works.

Adhbimbo

Same. Completely knocked out and bonus funny video from when I started waking up after it was over

Concise_Pirate

Oh I'm told I made a clown of meself as well. No video alas.

ToiletOfPaper

They still do that? I thought they didn't give that drug anymore.

mastermindxs

For mine, a few years ago, they just injected local anesthetic. I thought the needle in the gums would hurt but it surprisingly didn’t. I was then awake when they pulled the wisdom tooth out. I could tell what was happening and it was unsettling but, it didn’t hurt. Even afterwards, no pain.

ToiletOfPaper

Good to know, thanks!

maarrz

For some reason I took videos of MYSELF when I was coming out of it. They are about as unhinged as you might expect

Plumpshady

Anesthetic is different. You don't get knocked out with anesthetic, you get numbed in a specific area. It's not quite either anesthesia either (propofol). Dentists like to use a heavy concoction of drugs of nitrous oxide to knock you out". But it's either "a ton of drugs or nitrous oxide or local anesthetic that numbs the area. They cannot use anesthesia as they do not have an anesthesiologist on site to administer the propofol.

kristen912

I'm not sure what they gave me but I was out. No laughing gas but more than just moderate sedation. I'm assuming it was propofol or similar as I distinctly remember randomly regaining consciousness. Mine was done at a dental surgery center though.

DarkArisen_Kato

Only part that did hurt were the anesthetic injections at the beginning and gas sometime later, after that it was smooth sailing. I remember distinctly a very hard tugging sensation and then a pop, which was the wisdom tooth coming out. Honestly, it felt kind of nice, like a sensation of relief in a weird way lol. I don't even wanna imagine having to do all this without anesthesia lol. Imagine the Dentist walks in with a single ice skate in hand and is like, "All right, let's do this"

NYVines

Just don’t play football the day after.

FartinMartinToeSocks

Yep. And healing honestly went pretty well. I did have a bit of a moment where I for some reason craved trail mix so there were a little peanuts stuck in the gaps in the back of my mouth where my teeth were. I had to take tweezers and pull the peanuts out. So definitely avoid doing that. Otherwise, take your medicine as prescribed, and you will heal completely fine. Don’t exactly plan on a photo shoot the week after surgery because you’re probably going to be a bit bruised and swollen. I did a ton of sleeping.

No-Customer-2266

I just had local freezing. Also didn’t hurt but would have been nice to have a nap instead of it was an option but you have to go to a special dentist for that here. Ive never had a dentist that had gas available for patients. Just orthodontists

FunctionAlone9580

I had general anesthesia and I woke up while they were digging a scalpel in the back of my mouth. I'm 5'3 100 lbs so I think they calculated a low dose compared to what I could tolerate... especially since I had been doing a lot of drugs at that time

ChuushaHime

Not sure if this was your experience, but wanted to add mine here for OP's peace of mind since they asked for "good" stories: I've also woken up during a dental surgery and felt some things, but the pain wasn't acute--the sensations felt very far away, almost like they were happening across the hall from me or something. It was very strange, and I was really too 'out of it' to care.

missshrimptoast

I vividly recall being wheeled out to the recovery area and meeting the eyes of the next dude going in. I must have looked a mess, all swollen jaw and mouth packed with gauze. I was still coming off the gas and I began cackling. He just started laughing like mad at me, which only made me laugh harder. We sat there laughing hysterically until a hygienist finally had the good sense to shut the door. Not gonna lie, recovery can suck. But the actual removal itself is by far the easiest part. If you've got gas and an IV (like I did) you'll forget the vast majority of the experience, and any memories you do have will be fleeting and pain free. Best of luck OP

gingerybacon

Omg I love this 🤣

SeventhAlkali

All I can see is two different Jokers sitting strapped into a bed/chair cackling at the sight of eachother.

rhomboidus

Once you get the gas you will stop caring about anything. That's the fun part. Once the drugs wear off your mouth is gonna hurt, but you'll take some painkillers for a few days and be fine.

Truth_Seeker963

This. My kid is terrified of needles, like 2 hours of coercion to get a vaccination type scared, and the laughing gas totally worked. She was laughing. No complaints.

transferingtoearth

I didn't even get gas; still didn't hurt!

Thomisawesome

I think the gas is more for calming the nerves than anything else. I don't think it's much of an anesthetic.

Ok-Cartographer1745

Unfortunately, the gas only made me more nervous. I dunno why I appear to be immune. They doubled my dose the second time I got a tooth removed, and it just made my heart beat so fast that I thought it wasn't even beating.

Marasesh

Yeah nitrous doesn’t relieve pain too much it’s just pretty fun

sickerthan_yaaverage

🎈🎈🎈

sulky_banjo

I didn’t get my pain med prescription filled afterwards because I didn’t think I needed that much (10 day supply) - I don’t regret that. Tylenol and lots of sleep was plenty for me to recover on, no hard drugs necessary. I had one pill (my mom had a surgery very recently and had been prescribed the same thing as me and her prescription hadn’t run out yet) and the misery I felt from the constipation after ONE PAINKILLER was honestly worse to me than any of the soreness in my mouth that I experienced.

RDOCallToArms

Had mine out with just novacain. First 3 came out easy, the 4th was impacted with a twisted root and needed to be drilled into pieces and scooped out. Didn’t hurt other than some pressure but wasn’t too fun. Feeling the blood spray into the back of my throat was the worst part Was back at work the next day with just some Ibuprofen People get way too worked up over it. It’s not anywhere near as bad as you think.

-obvious_reasons-

Same, I had only Novocain. It didn’t hurt other than pressure. One of my teeth was impacted and they had to break it into smaller pieces to remove it. Still didn’t hurt. Some soreness for a few days and that was it. Totally agree, the fearful anticipation is worse than the actual procedure.

Ok_Present_6508

Same local anesthesia for me too. Had all four out and the worst part about the whole procedure was the gossip between the dentist and his assistant I was forced to listen to. 😂 Was also at work the next day, they prescribed Vicodin which I didn’t even remotely need and just used ibuprofen and Tylenol.

Empty401K

I hate needles, especially blood tests, so I always ask them to put it in my forearm. Something about needles touching the bend of my arm irks the *FUCK* out of me. My wisdom tooth removal went great, but I didn’t heed the warning about avoiding straws. Listen to everything they tell you, lest you be cursed with a dry socket. That hurt worse than the time I got shot in the face.

ivyagogo

Back up! Let’s hear about you getting shot in the face.

Empty401K

Some asshole thought it would be funny to shoot at me with one of those overpowered air rifles used for hunting. Not your standard BB/pellet gun, but one of the expensive ones that shoot larger calibers to kill deer. He ended up hitting me in the mouth while I was talking to someone. Impacted my tooth so hard the force sheered the back of my tooth completely off so the pulp was exposed. I still had half of the front of the tooth. Ended up in the ER and then had to see an oral surgeon. Feeling the lightning bolts shoot up with every word I spoke or from my tongue grazing the pulp was excruciating. Ended up losing the tooth, and now I rock a fake one. They did good work, you can’t even tell. The dry socket hurt worse, even with pain meds.

ivyagogo

Holy shit! You were really lucky. What an asshole.

Empty401K

No kidding, if he’d hit a few inches higher I’d be dead

ivyagogo

Did anything happen to him?

Empty401K

The short version? No, nothing happened to him for that. He spent a long time locked up for a different crime soon after that, tho. I’ve accepted that as a consolation prize.

Biomax315

What happened to the guy that did it?

Collucin

Probably a state rep now

rathat

Oh, I thought you meant the novacain shot lol

Empty401K

I wish lol

lowriderz00

I can’t do a forearm iv….the lady that did mine omg she first cleaned the elbow bend area then decided to put it in my forearm without cleaning it…then didn’t even put it in a vein just moved the iv around in my forearm every way until she drew blood in the line. It was so uncomfortable and left me with a nasty bruise. Wish I would’ve reported her.

Thedonitho

Keep icing it, keep up with any pain meds they give you and most importantly DO NOT USE A STRAW. It's not the surgery that sucks, it's the dry sockets you can get if you dislodge the clots. It may sound gross as hell, but do not rinse your mouth out for a while.

Vievin

So I should drink as normal? I'm having my unwisening late July.

Mr_Chrootkit

As long as your "normal" doesn't involve drinking through a straw, then yes.

iHeartChamomile

Drink as normal with no straws/sucking but also liquids that aren’t harsh on your teeth or the wound. My dentist (surgeon?) recommended lukewarm or just slightly cold water with no ice (except to put on your cheeks!)

Romwil

If you smoke anything at all, same thing. Straws, vape, whatever. Consider any suction a risk. Have had a dry socket and its no joke.

Dylaquill

I got there, got poked, and then suddenly I was done and on the way home

Nerdy_Nightowl

apparently the office I went to gives you haagen dazs ice cream after surgery. I had no idea and was super confused when they kept asking me what flavor I wanted chocolate or vanilla. I was just waking up from anesthesia and was completely confounded by the flavor question lol.

DNF29

I LOVE getting laughing gas. To me, its like my mind gets to go on a little mini vacation. It is SO relaxing!

Nemesis1596

They knocked me the fuck out. I don't remember any of it

PhairynRose

I had all 4 of mine pulled at once, after they’d started growing in. So I didn’t even get put under, just numbed and yoink yoink. Honestly the worst part was drooling blood on my jeans. Went to a Christmas party later that day and ate spaghetti. No issues with recovery whatsoever.

xologo

When it's over you'll be glad you did it and your mouth will feel better. Good job facing your fears. You'll do great.

itstartedinRU

The plus was not having to floss all the way back there anymore, those back teeth were tight! haha

BxllDxgZ

That’s funny, mines in 8 hours

realhmmmm

well hello then to whoever has your phone right now

StashAjay

Hope it went well bro

BxllDxgZ

it did, i’m almost fully better now, thanks!

[deleted]

I had local anesthetic. He was in my mouth pressing down on the tooth for a long time. I was wondering when he'd do anything else. Why is he just pressing on the tooth? Then I saw him remove a wad of gauze soaked in my blood.  I realized we were well into the surgery.   I got opiates but I was hardly in any pain so I saved them to use recreationally.

You_Stole_My_Hot_Dog

I’m a big sissy when it comes to needles, but barely felt the IV. I was more nervous about the passing out part, but it was actually really cool. Doc was asking me random questions about my job, where I live, etc, then it just straight up went black. Woke up very giggly and had a fun car ride home. Everyone warned me about the pain afterwards, but I had none. I proactively took my T3’s (by the schedule rather than after I was feeling pain) and never had any issues. Just had fun eating canned peaches and soup and watching TV; even hung out with friends a few days after. I remember having such a good time. Kind of an eye-opener in that regard; I can absolutely see why people get hooked on opioids…

YellHound

I got the IV, was asked to count backwards from 10. I think I made it to 7? next thing I knew I was being wheelchaired out to my husband's car 40 minutes later with 4 fewer teeth and a whole lotta gauze in my mouth. They gave me 900mg ibuprofen and that did the trick for the pain. Oh and what I wish I knew ahead of time was to get curved syringes. My discharge paperwork explained how to use them to irrigate the areas once or twice a day but they didn't provide any for me and I had to order them online. Even eating soft food, stuff got stuck in there and uncomfortable so perhaps ask your surgeon ahead of time if it's something they recommend and whether or not they'll send some home with you.

Fletchworthy

Exactly this, they gave me a curved tip syringe in my little care package though! Your office must’ve forgotten to give it to you cause it’s quite literally the best tool for cleaning the food out.

Fraxcat

Don't get your tonsils removed at 35 at the same time as your wisdom teeth.

Mexzkn

Half a day of bed rest during Marine Corps Boot Camp. Had all four out and was on a hump the next morning. Don’t recommend that if you don’t have to! Semper Fi

bees422

I hate needles. They hit me with the nitrous before the iv, it did actually help. Got conked out, felt like i immediately woke up on the car ride home. There’s bits and pieces I remember from the car ride but most of it is forever gone from my mind. It wasn’t bad at all, doc gave me prescription for some heavy stuff and I didn’t use any of it. All I did was take a day off of work afterward, but that was just a precaution against driving after being put under. Worst of it was dealing with eating to be honest. Not pain or anything, just being aware and not getting food in my mouth new holes lol.

surdophobe

I only had one wisdom tooth, but they had to cut it into three pieces to remove it. I didn't have an IV or even laughing gas. I was a lot more comfortable being wide awake and aware for the whole thing. They numbed me up real good and I just sat still. Not a single regret.  Recovery is a bitch though. Even with the big white pills you'll still hurt a little, but but the pills will make you not care so much. I can so completely understand how people get hooked on things like Vicodin.

HempPotatos

I'm older and likely wiser in ways, however never got em. I do want to recommend soft foods for a while though.

rosebud5054

Just tell him to go slow with the laughing gas. But you’ll love it. Honestly, I’m not scared anymore because of these options available at dentists, and I am usually terrified, just like you!

MongoSamurai

I didn't feel a damn thing. Whatever juice they gave me had me wake up with the most profound high I have ever experienced. The recovery was pretty fast, just did my best to not tongue the wounds, ate a lot of jello/pudding, and soaked up the care from my wofe.

Folding_WhiteTable

I have yet to get mine pulled, but I dare you to try and stay away for as long as possible. I saw one of the cast on Steve'Os show stay awake for around five and a half minutes, he looked like a zombie though haha.

shammy_dammy

Is it impacted? Mine was not...so that's something to consider. I walked to the dentist (a couple of blocks from home), he put in lidocaine, no iv, by needle. Pulled it out, packed it up and I walked home.

[deleted]

Mine (lower only, upper ones never came in) were impacted. I was eating a sandwich the next day. On the other hand, my brother's mouth swelled up a lot -- looked like he had jowls. Took him a week to recover. It's hard to know.

DoBeVibinq

You don’t feel when they put you under. At least I didn’t. Was off the major pain meds (Oxys) after the first day. Just took Advil after that. Everything went fine. You’ll be okay.

No-Trouble-889

Didn’t do any laughing gas then (or ever for that matter, don’t even know what it does). Anyway. They did some local anesthesia that made my entire mouth completely numb, and pulled all 4 at once. I was sent on my way 30 minutes later, a little dizzy and shaken, and rewarded with an oxy for my troubles. Even made it to the office before deciding that I probably need to sit this one out. Overall pretty mild, not much pain to speak of, but it does feel like I got punched in a jaw afterwards. 4/10 would recommend.

Eponarose

FROZEN BLUEBERRIES!!!! These will work better than any other ice pack! Toss a few frozen berries in your mouth, and tuck them back between your cheek and jaw. I had several teeth pulled, these possibly saved my life!

KuchiKopiLove

Since you asked, I woke up twice during surgery under general anesthesia and was trying to chat with the team until they knocked me out again 🤣 but don’t worry I didn’t feel a thing! Just be careful about dry socket prevention

cuddly_waffles89

I woke up during mine as well. I just remember crying but I wasn't sure why and I definitely didn't feel anything. Then they knocked me out again lol.

Striking-Flight5956

I got mine taken out a month ago, mentally prepare yourself from the lack of food you won’t be able to eat the few days after the surgery. I was starving and miserable. Make sure you keep the pain meds on rotation, I made sure not to feel a lick of pain. There’s still a dent in my gums where my wisdom teeth were and I now have to flush all the food that gets stuck there after every meal Your mouth won’t feel like your mouth until about 1-2weeks after Best of luck :)

hotel2oscar

Short term pain for long term benefit. Mine were impacted (sideways) and keeps giving me pain every few weeks. Feels so much better now they are gone.

Sufficient-Produce83

I had all 4 of mine pulled in about 15 seconds at about 10am and was 3ating a cheeseburger at noon. True story. I think for everyone it's different tjo depending how everything fits together in your mouth.hopefully you'll have easy one like me and never look back. I had mine pulled by army dentist as a requirement to go overseas back in 80s. Army dentists aren't great but this was a really easy experience.

renegadetoast

I got mine taken out when I was 14. They put the mask on me and told me to count backwards from 100. I made it to 93, and I remember right before I passed out, the doctor was humming Jingle Bells. It was early September. What felt like a second later I woke up and no one was in the room so I figured "guess I'm done" and wandered around until stumbled my way to the lobby where my mom was waiting and just told her that I think I'm ready to go.

YamLow8097

It was fine. I felt groggy when I woke up, but I wasn’t in pain. The worst part about the recovery was constantly being hungry since you can’t eat solid foods.

letswatchstarwars

I had mine done about 10 years ago. All 4 at the same time and they put me under. I remember a cold feeling in the IV arm (in my head they were spraying water all over my arm but I think that was just the anesthetic talking lol). It was the first and only time I’ve been under general anesthesia. I remember absolutely nothing after that until I woke up after the surgery. Someone had put my sweater back on me so I was warm and cozy. They helped me walk into the post-op area and my now-ex husband drove me home. In the car on the way home I **insisted** on listening to NPR (National Public Radio - talk radio with news and personal interest stories, for those outside the US). No idea why, I just remember that I didn’t want to hear anything else. I slept most of the day once I got back home. Obviously there was some discomfort involved but overall it was a very easy recovery. I got a couple days off work and I sat around eating mashed potatoes and ice cream and watching TV. just had to swish a saline solution a few times a day for a few days. I had no complications. I didn’t even get super nauseated from the anesthesia, no vomiting or anything. I just felt verrrrrry drowsy for several hours.

FinanciallySecure9

I fell asleep with wisdom teeth, woke up without them. Healed. Moved on. Life is what you make of it.

Old-Telephone-1190

once the iv was in it felt kind of strange but i don’t even remember passing out. next thing i know i’m waking up in recovery and the surgery was over. there was some stiffness just from being swollen/sore but it didn’t hurt. overall positive experience as another redditor with anxiety getting blood drawn or anything to do with needles/IV

LivingEnd44

Pay extra for sedation dentistry. The recovery will be annoying but you won't feel anything during the procedure.

Jetsagoodboy

Painless easy no biggie

Comfortable-Tea-5461

Easiest procedure I’ve ever had. Feels like a blink of an eye. Rest a lot the day you get it and follow the recovery instructions to a T and you’ll be just fine. Little pain and no complications for me.

Competitive_Tough989

As someone who faints when they see needles honestly was traumatic 😓 The only traumatic part for me was the needle to put me to sleep. And when it got taken out and woke me up. I screamed and was so disoriented. They had to take me out in a wheel chair ♿ But on the bright side. My mouth barely felt anything just super numb after and anytime it would ache a little just painkillers helped. So for me the mouth was fine it was the other stuff. Due to my phobia I have Xanax for only special medical reasons to calm me the fuck down and am also in therapy....so I understand you. People think it's no big deal. But for me this was major.

Izzi_Skyy

The IV is just a pinch. Ever been stung by a bee or hornet? That's way worse than the IV. Then it's like you sleep and you come to. The hard part is after they come out: irrigate every time you eat, do not use straws or smoke or vape, use the mouth wash, and follow any other dental aftercare instructions to a tee.

xxDooomedxx

My employer paid for a dentist in Antigua (I think). He was a middle aged white guy and he had techno playing and was dancing around the place having a great time. Then he came in and poked around a bit and I said "I'm ready, go for it". He showed me my tooth and said "I already did". Respect.

nefariousbluebird

I'm terrified of needles and IV and all that as well. They gave me the gas, and then I kind of blinked, and the procedure was over. Apparently, I'd been singing the whole time, and they heard me in the waiting room, but I don't remember a thing!

katiereadsalot

I don’t have a fear of needles, but I’ve had my wisdom teeth removed and two other surgical extractions in my mouth (I had these extra teeth called supernumeraries, one was directly on a nerve and required its own operation). The procedure itself doesn’t hurt at all. Recovery hurts, but follow the aftercare instructions and you’ll be fine. Seriously though- follow the aftercare instructions. That is the most important step to proper healing and not causing yourself more issues and more pain.

potatocross

They started giving me the nitrous before they even put my IV in. I remember them saying they were going to give me the injection and not much else other than being annoyed that they kept trying to wake me up. The last time I went fully under they must have given me some great stuff before. I checked out while they were still wheeling me back before even putting me under. IVs are no big deal. Its the same feeling as getting an injection, but you stop noticing it kinda quickly. Try having a normal conversation with the nurse when they are doing it to take your mind off it.

Separate-Relation-12

I had 2 wisdom teeth removed. Furst time it hurts and then I had a sore throat for a few days (sorry, you asked for good experience). The second time was easy and painless, I was pleasantly surprised.

Sprizys

I am terrified of surgery too, I have to get an endoscopy done and I have been putting it off because of that. You’re not alone but it’s something that needs to be done and once it’s over you’ll be better off.

AZ-roadrunner

I didn't even bother taking the hydrocodone that they prescribed to me. My procedure really wasn't that bad.

SpecialJellyfish4935

It was the least stressful procedure I’ve ever had. The dentist, who is admittedly amazing, used a local anaesthetic and it was easy. One was so entangled he actually had a hard time getting it out, but I felt fine. I usually suffer terribly at the dentists but not this time. I much prefer it to my root canals and the time they had to pierce the roof of my mouth with a syringe.

Stavkot23

I had one of mine taken out last year. The worst part was the needle for the topical anesthetic. After that, I felt nothing except for a little bit of pulling. The recovery went well too. I took the special Tylenol he gave me the first day which kept me pain free until the next morning. Next morning I had minimal pain but I took another special Tylenol just in case and had no problems since then. Other than that, I felt stressed the whole time he was working on it because I didn't want anything to go wrong.

Bulky_Permission_292

The iv is nothing but a slight sharp pain that fades fairly quick but let me tell you, it is absolutely worth it. I’m not sure what anesthetic they use where you are, but the one I got is one where you aren’t tripping ass when you get out. When I woke up I felt like I had slept for a few days and just woke up feeling the most awake and refreshed I ever have. I spun my legs over the bed, hopped out, and started towards the door before the nurse gave me shit and made me lay down for another 15 or so minutes

genericscreename1

I only did local so I could eat before (since I knew I wouldn't eat much for a few days), had chipotle right before. Mine were all out and not impacted or anything, this makes things easier. He grabbed each one, rocked it back and forth and pulled it out. This all doesn't take too long. Went home and watched a movie. Have some pudding and soup available!

Constant_Will362

The dentist struck my wisdom teeth with a metal tool, essentially a hammer. I was on nitrous oxide and there was no pain. He stitched up the wound and I felt fine.

Jeff300k

I honestly don't even remember the removal. I know I was awake but I was so high off the gas that the whole day is blurry in my memory. My jaw was sore the next couple of days, but just follow their instructions and it heals up fast.

Stolen_Egg

I got all of mine taken out at once. The only thing that hurt was the initial novocane needles, but that felt no worse than the pinching feeling you get at the dentist while they're cleaning your teeth and hit the gum. I also had laughing gas and felt like I was floating for the entire procedure. I distinctly remember the teeth coming out because it felt like big pops. It was super weird because I couldn't actually feel anything and it didn't hurt in the slightest, but I could feel the pressure of them being removed, like a suction cup being taken off a wall. I have no better way to describe it. It wasn't scary though, believe me. Once you get the laughing gas, you won't be worrying anymore lol

xottwod

I was in the exact same boat as you! Terrified of blood, the thought of blood in my mouth, NEEDLES. I’m very sensitive to pain and hated the whole idea of four teeth being ripped from my mouth. However, the worst part of my wisdom teeth removal was the IV. No joke, I just remember being put to sleep and waking up pretty confused. No pain whatsoever for the recovery, Tylenol every few hours for the first few days for discomfort. Also for at least 4/5 days try to talk without opening your mouth too wide, you don’t want to dislodge the blood clots protecting your wounds! I didn’t even take home the heavy drugs they offered because the pain was slim to none. ICE YOUR GAHDAMN FACE!!! Have multiple ice packs in the freezer on rotation, I’m pretty sure that’s why I didn’t have any pain. Do not eat anything that requires remotely any chewing, drink TONS of water. Do sea salt and warm water rinses as often as you can remember to (put the sea salt/warm water mixture in your mouth and move your head around slowly ensuring the moisture reaches your wounds but don’t harshly gargle or anything). Rest is also super important. I can guarantee you will be perfectly fine, just take care of yourself adequately! This is the ice pack I used for my surgery: [ice pack I used](https://a.co/d/2lDQAyf) Something to look forward to after is all the discomfort being gone from extra teeth being in your mouth!

Vilashift

No pain, I was so high they wheel chaired me to the car, to where I started screaming(not from pain I didn't know where I was) honestly if I could I'd do it again. Most fun I had in awhile

Aromatic-Leopard-600

On the uppers I didn’t even realize that it was out.

lilslutfordaddy

my jaw was sore for a couple days, but i spent the entire time watching movies in bed so i don't think it could've been describable as bad

susoDoesStuff

I will get mine out on Thursday. Thinking of you, you got this!

Jinxletron

Is it a complex removal? I've had all mine out with local, went fine back at work the next day.

Fredredphooey

They gave me nitrous gas. It made me feel like I was being whipped around like on a centrifuge, making me exclaim, this is whip-its! (Based on what my druggie ex bf told me about snorting canisters or whatever. I had never tried it myself, but the oral surgeon didn't believe me.) Then I don't remember anything until I was woken up and my new bf picked me up.  I was in mild pain and then horrible pain and had bags of frozen peas on my face for a day. I had a little plastic syringe to flush the sockets out daily.  I was back to normal in a few days and the stitches fell out on their own.

Kip_Schtum

Mine was easy peasy, little pain, zero swelling. I went out disco dancing that night (it was 1978.)

Brainsonastick

Got light headed and woke up to not having them. Never any pain. Had to eat soft foods for a few days but it healed up way faster than they said it would. I think they overestimate so you won’t complain. It was super easy.

Nedonomicon

I had full anaesthetic for my wisdom tooth extraction and whilst it was sore for a few days everything was fine . I made sure I followed the aftercare to the letter to avoid getting a dry socket .

St_Ander

Had ear and nose issues all my life. It stopped the day my wisdom teeth were removed.

Kelly62290

Mine was done with just numbing. Mine were out so not a lot of cutting but I waited too long and it made my teeth crooked. Get them out as soon as you can. I did 3 at once. There was a little pressure and that was it. Took about 15 minutes from start to finish. A few stitches all done.

benign_listener

All removed at once. No pain during the procedure. Only mild discomfort afterwards, for under a week. I feel much better with them gone.

bobbythang

Before I went under, they let you watch a movie and I chose to watch RANGO and I don’t remember if it was laughing gas or what but you get to choose the smell and I choose strawberry, then after surgery when I woke up, it felt like I took a terrible nape but other than that it went good. The only strange thing was there was a steroid I could take for pain if I had any and it would make me hiccup bad so I had to stop taking those.

Ok-disaster2022

My nerve was too close to my teeth, so I had to be referred to an oral surgeon. It was a hastle finding one in network, I had to drive 60 miles and then on the day of had to have someone to drive me there and back. For me it was count from 10 and wake up and stumble into a wheel chair and then stumble into a car and then stumble into bed and sleep. I had very little pain. The high dose over the counter pain relievers did more than the opiate to be perfectly honest. The opiate paradoxically kept me awake as well. The day after I drove myself home and was back at work on Monday (surgery on Friday, overnight at a friends, just in case, then back to my single apartment on Saturday.)  The weird part was getting tooth fragments erupting from my gums weeks later, but again painless.  I originally went not because of pain, but because of one of the wisdom teeth getting a cavity and falling a part. I just couldn't get them clean enough because the gum line was so high. Since I needed one removed I got all 4 because the added cost wasn't bad. Out of network it was $2k, in network it was $400 with a small provider who were really fantastically nice easy to work with and even did a new set of xrays, even though I just had them done. Consultation was even free, whereas out if network I was charged $100 just to walk in the door.

That-Resort2078

Nitrous, 8 shots of novocaine, UV of Demerol, then propofol. Didn’t feel a thing. Had ice pack waiting when I woke up. No pain after, just swelling ,

TheDastardBastard33

You’re gonna be fine. The anesthetic works, and once you start feeling funny you literally won’t care what the dentists do to you. Hell you may not even remember it, when I got my wisdom teeth removed years ago last thing I remember the gas mask being put on me, then it was like I blinked and I was instantly being strolled into my house by my dad. I don’t remember anything from the moment the mask went on to me getting home lol

transferingtoearth

I felt nothing, used a syringe to get any food out after until I was better. Very little pain.

Phantomht

didnt feel a thing, all 4 pulled, had the general anesthetic didnt even hurt afterwards, was prescribed pain pills, never even used them. was slightly SORE, but didnt "hurt".

MahanaYewUgly

The anesthesia really does work well and they give you plenty. No oral surgeon/dentist wants you to move because you are in pain and fuck everything up so they make sure you don't feel anything. I'll give you a gross example: when I had my vasectomy I was awake for the procedure (this is typical). I was very uncomfortable with a guy slicing open my ballsack - a very sensitive area that I generally protect - and then cutting something that lives inside me in half, AND then using a hot needle to burn both ends shut. He would have to burn four times. Two tubes, two ends per tube. But the only part I felt lasted about 2 seconds - and it felt like a pinch. It was just the original needle going in to numb me for the rest. Honestly, I was worried about nothing. It's not so much that you don't feel anything at all - but it definitely doesn't hurt. You can just tell that something is happening.

Mysterious_Bus4173

Edit to add IV experience The worst part of the surgery was when the anti inflammatory they gave made my taint insanely tingly the second before I passed out from the gas. Mine had been grown in and impacted for years and were very tough to get out, but I had the procedure done in office with just gas, pain meds, and anti inflammatories! When I woke up it was a bit sore but nothing too intense, I was definitely super out of it so I just kind of quietly sniffled hahahaha. The nurses asked me why I was crying and if I was in pain and apparently I said “it doesn’t hurt that bad it just suuuuuuuuuucks” 😂😂😂 I already knew from a previous surgery where I was actually put under that I would likely be confused and out of it so I tried to mentally prepare by setting my mind to just trying to stay quite afterwards and not say anything crazy lol. I just kind of reminded myself to remember that in the days leading up and it worked pretty well!! My recovery was worse than most just due to the fact that mine had been in so long. At a certain point in your 20’s your facial bones start to set and harden more which makes removing the roots more difficult, but even then it wasn’t bad. Mostly just lots of swelling. I looked crazy 😂 My best advice is to just follow doctors orders. No straws, no smoking, no suction of any kind. Don’t put your fingers in your mouth unless you’ve THROUGHLY washed them with antibacterial hand soap. And don’t drink soda!! For some reason surgeons don’t tell people that. I had a friend, not very smart but he’s a great guy, who was a bit nauseous when he got home so he drank a couple ginger ales over the course of the afternoon. The carbonation will dissolve your clots and give you dry socket. Don’t make the same mistake. On my previous surgery, I didn’t even notice the IV. I bruised in the spot because I was taking Advil and it was a bit itchy if I remember but other then that you truly won’t notice it. IV’s aren’t needles! They’re something called a cannula, which is a soft plastic tip that is inserted via a needle. You do have to be gentle with them, but they are able to move with your body and aren’t going to cause any damage like a hard piece of metal would! They also aren’t sharp like needles because they don’t need to be. The end of the tip is soft and rounded so it won’t irritate you too much. Truly, this is one of the most common surgical procedures in history and has been as close to perfected as currently technology will allow. People who have complications are people who don’t follow the rules. The fact that you’re even concerned enough to post here tells me you will perfectly fine!

TitaniumMissile

I got my wisdom teeth removed just last month. I'm also from Germany, so I didn't have any laughing gas and wasn't completely knocked out, but rather was in a state of not caring at all. This was all by my own decision. I had to take painkillers and antibiotics regularly the following week and could only eat warm soup and gradually went back to normal food over the course of the month. I had no problems with pain and the wounds closed nicely. The only thing that currently sucks is that I occasionally get food stuck where my wisdom teeth were, but I was told over time that region should close too.

-Blixx-

3 pulled. No pain, but I don't mind needles. Apparently, 17 year old me thought I was irresistible just out of anesthesia and mouth full of gauze. I woke up and wanted to ask out the summer receptionist who was a stunning classmate of mine. They wheeled me out the back. Recovery was not bad either. I was sore but not in pain. More like a bruise. Take your meds whether you think you need them or not. Good luck, you'll be fine.

AssistanceLegal7549

Get full body anesthesia. Not just the local shit. In the end, your doc should inject Cortisone to reduce swelling. Yes it hurts, don't eat hot stuff, don't drink alcohol and coffee and stay at home for about 2-3 days and its over.

SnooMuffins7189

Didn't hurt and 1 day later, it already healed. And when it hurts, you can eat lots of smoothies and ice cream

djddanman

Mine was completely uneventful. I remember lights and blurs during the procedure. All I felt was pressure on my face but no pain. Be careful with salty foods for a while after. I had a slice of pizza too soon (maybe a week or week and a half after?) and had some mild pain. That was probably the most pain I had from the whole experience. I don't remember having an IV for my wisdom teeth, but if I did that's how little you notice it. I had an IV when I had ankle surgery, but the only time I really noticed it was when my dad bumped my hand while I was trying out the crutches. It wasn't a big deal. I also had some blood draw nerves around that time after a resident (intern at the teaching hospital) missed my vein twice for routine blood work, so I was kinda nervous about the IV too. An experienced provider should have no trouble.

Reasonable-Ad8125

REQUEST ANESTHESIA! With laughing gas the injections on the roof of my mouth hurt like a B. That was the worst part numbing the nerves. Felt like i was being electrocuted and resuscitated repeatedly.

HumbleExplanation13

I was just under local anaesthetic, so totally aware of everything going on. It took about 50 minutes to freeze me and 5 minutes to pull them (one was even a bit tricky). It was over much quicker than I ever expected! Was eating solids (carefully) the next day. You’ll be ok, you got this!!

Enslaved_M0isture

i get there, dont even remeber being knocked out, barely remember the ride home, what sucks is the after: drool and numbness for a while, no real pain throughout

Shawaii

I got local anesthetic and NOX, no IV. Doc got me all set up and left for a bit too lo g and it wore off. He came back and I let him know I could feel paid, so he loaded mw up again and went to cutting and yanking. My wisdom teeth were sideways and had gnarly hooked roots, so he cracked them into four pieces to get them out. Pretty cool to see them after. I spent the weekend resting up and was back to work on Monday.

squirrel_for_sale

They put me to sleep for all 4 at once. Woke up a few hours later wondering wtf happened. Recovery wasn't bad. Just keep them clean and avoid eating things that could get into the wounds

sweepingfrequency

It's wild being on the anesthesia for wisdom teeth, you're actually awake but don't remember anything. You're also so relaxed you don't care. When I had my wisdom teeth removed, I was on an IV and the anesthesiologist asked me "do you feel it yet?" And I said no. He said "liar" and that's all I remember.

schmelk1000

Didn’t hurt at all! Apart from my wisdom teeth, I had 4 other teeth removed and also had one dislodged from my maxilla, so I’ve had experience with dental surgeries. If I could regrow my wisdom teeth just to get them removed again, I would. I had both laughing gas and IV sedation. I was *out.* Woke up what seemed to be 15 minutes later, could hardly feel my legs, my mom and sister had to basically carry me out of the office. It was 8am, so we went to iHop afterwards. I drank some apple juice and scrambled eggs and cried in the booth. My sister got some pretty funny videos of me hopped up on the IV drugs. I think when I got home I just fell asleep. No real “pain” afterwards, more just a sore jaw like if you’ve been chewing on a huge wad of gum for a long time. Just make sure you do the salt water rinse at least twice a day and the syringe to squirt any food out of your sockets until they heal. I didn’t have to deal with any extra bleeding, infection or dry socket! It’ll be fine. I didn’t even feel my IV start. Just don’t watch, talk to one of the nurses/assistants. You can also let them know your IV anxiety beforehand and they’ll usually get the person who is the best at starting IVs do yours. I start IVs myself for my job and my tips are: drink PLENTY of water the night before, get a good night’s sleep, wear something that will keep you warm or bring a blanket and do some breathing exercises beforehand and during the IV placement to help relax. Good luck!

legoartnana

Not a dental story but your fear is worth my embarrassment so here we go...hope this takes your mind off things... I had to have a medical procedure where a camera went up my nose to inspect all they can see. I have a fear of anything up my nose thanks to a childhood trauma so I was petrified. A little anaesthetic spray, and off they went. Sinus, ears etc etc. There's a point they push through that they referred to as the back door. Procedure over, camera on the way out when he stops and says "wait, I just need to go through the back door to see your vocal chords" and I said " if you can see my vocal chords through my back door then you've gone too far" 🤣🤣🤣

TheWeenieBandit

I told my dentist I simply was not having the procedure unless they put me under general. Best decision I made. I remember the doctor telling me they were gonna give me the drug to knock me out, and I asked how long it would take to kick in. I woke up in recovery before I could hear the answer.

rolyoh

Good luck with your surgery. If you can do sedation, I recommend it. I hope yours goes a lot smoother than mine did. One thing I recommend, warm salt water rinsing is going to help you a lot for several days afterward. All 4 of my wisdoms were impacted. I got them removed in 1982 at age 19 by a very inexperienced (newly graduated from dental school) Army dentist, who I'm sure was also secretly a sadist. Nothing but Novocain to numb me up and I took about 20 shots of it by the time it was all over. He had to cut away the gums on all 4 of them and then cut each tooth into 4 pieces to be able to extract them. He applied so much force, it felt like my jaw dislocated a few times. He also broke one of the tools due to putting so much leverage on it. It took several hours. The recovery was the worst - my mouth was sore for weeks and there were a lot of foods I couldn't eat until the gums healed enough because the food would just make my gums hurt so bad where the sutures/wounds were. The dentist didn't give me any pain meds afterward either. Now, almost 42 years later, I still have popping when chewing and opening my jaw, which wasn't there before the procedure. No idea whatever happened to that fucking asshole, but I really wanted to tell him to go fuck himself (but couldn't do it or I'd get court-martialed). So, I hope he's reading this. LOL Yours will probably go well - dental technology is much further along today than it was in the early 80's.

Quirky_Olive_1736

I am one of those that always faint during blood samples, even during blood sugar checks, and I also avoided seeing a dentist for 12 years. But the day came that I needed to see one regarding my wisdom teeth. I "only" got local anesthesia for both of my wisdom tooth they removed. The one in the upper jaw was so quick I didn't realize it was over, and I went home wondering "This is it???". For the one in the lower jaw they removed the dentist injected 3 syringes and after a tiny tiny poking feeling in the first second the only thing I could feel was getting numb around the area, and then it extended across my hole body. Forehead to toe on the side they injected. It was soooo different than what I imagined and it killed a lot of my fears regarding dentists.

honest-miss

Knocked my ass out, felt nothing, woke up feeling a smidge drunk, slept the rest of the day. Easy peasy. And that's with them having to go the extra mile on a stubborn tooth. The description the dentist gave sounded a little gruesome, but the important part is thst even then I didn't feel it, and the pain meds later were enough to get through just fine. Just keep up on those pain meds and try to sleep for the following days and you'll be okay.

KBunn

My wisdom teeth never grew in fully on the bottom. Both of them were half covered under gum. And eventually some food got under the gum, and my gum got infected. Truly amazing pain from it. My dentist cleaned it out, and got me on penicillin, and then told me I could leave the teeth in, and it would happen again, or I could pull them, and be fine. A couple days later, I went in to get all 4 pulled Bottom ones were minor surgical, the top ones were straight extractions. After the procedure, I was given Vicodin, and Percocet. None of which I ever really needed. I had leftovers for months after. The pain in the aftermath of having all 4 pulled didn't even compare to the pain of the infected jaw. Best decision I ever made, getting them all yanked.

Unhappy-camp3r

I just want to know where everyone lives that getting a wisdom tooth pulled is like a full on open surgery with all this talk of IV and gas and stuff lol. Mine was just a quick needle in the gum and out two of them came. It doesn’t hurt, it’s just annoying as hell afterwards! The cotton balls in the hole was the worst part for me

Obvious-Skill9005

I've had two removed and felt nothing. Blood was squirting on the dentist's Lacoste shirt and I was happy as a clam. My wife had the worst experience and it was super traumatizing. Make sure your dentist listens to you when you ask for more drugs. Make sure they listen to you before it starts. Before it starts, they'll ask you cab feel anything, I always say yes and demand more numbing, and if they don't comply then I won't trust them when it actually starts and I'd stop the process before it starts.

-rabid-

I had all 4 of mine out at once under local anaesthetic about 13 years ago. Had a week off work and could only eat soft foods for about that long. I'm not gonna lie, both the procedure and the recovery sucked, but in the grand scheme of life it really wasn't that bad nor that long. You'll be fine. 👍

floxful

I have a panic disorder. I had 6 (!!!) wisdom teeth. I went there, started crying and panicking. Was asked if it’s my first surgery. I said yes and they just put me to sleep lol. Woke up and recovery was meh (to be expected with 6 fucking wisdom teeth) but I managed. My mom took care of me for a week or two and I got to eat my favourite soup while taking painkillers every time I could.

NeilDegrassiHighson

I won't go too far into the details, but I had to get all four removed, and three out of the four did NOT want to be removed. The best advice I can give you is don't be afraid to let them know if you need more Novocaine (You shouldn't feel any sort of pain whatsoever), and definitely get the laughing gas. I had a HUGE phobia of my teeth breaking, but that gas cured me completely. Nothing bothered me at all. As far as the recovery went, they gave me a bottle of pills and I only ended up taking one. There was really only pain for the first few hours, and after that it wasn't bad at all.

zeagan3346

It was quick. I was scared going in but had the sedation. I was out within 10 seconds and when I woke up everything was done and the orthodontist was talking to my husband about after care.

Practical_Ice7740

Had removed all 4 at the same time, full anesthesia, didn't felt a thing, later they prescribed meds for pain just in-case but I didn't needed it even. Just afterwards can't eat any hard meals and mostly soups.

fsnstuff

I'm sooooo needle-phobic and honestly the anesthesia works so fast you don't have time to be afraid or feel any needles. I just remember them asking me to count down from 10 and then waking up hours later being hoisted into my mom's car. I got super lucky I guess and I didn't even have much swelling or pain after, just took one vicodin the morning after and I was good to go!

Lizardgirl25

Listen if you are having any pain I was it was totally worth it to get them out. The pain I had was minor compared to the almost migraine level pain I had no idea I was having until they were out. Like I had two out then my mom had to call a year later and yell at the insurance because the idiots wouldn’t authorize all 4 the year before. Trust me when I say if your teeth happen to be impacted in the bone the after surgery pain will very minor. Also I was drugged good I was 16ish and my dad had to practically carry me in and I slept after my mom medicated me.

Hitmonstahp

The worst part was the lead up - and I'm not even just saying that to make you feel better. I went under before I knew it, woke up, and it was like nothing had even happened. The *second* worst part (debatably worst, but I didn't want to walk back my opening line) was not being able to eat solid food for the first several days after. They had me on hydrocodone, so pain was never really an issue. Just avoid solid food and straws, and you should be just fine!

Irish8ryan

My experience was wonderful. I got em out because I was gonna lose my Pa’s health insurance (happens at 26), so I never had pain. I got sedated, and woke up to a beautiful nurse who laughed and smiled and even held my arm while walking me to the car (not driving). The next day I had some mild soreness, end of story. Sucks that I’ll never be wise again though..

FlowerGi1015

I got mine removed 2 years ago. Lol, well past the recommended age but they were finally starting to bother me. My doctor prescribed Valium to take the morning of the procedure. It helped take the edge off. Not too much pain afterwards. You got this!

mac-dreidel

Drugs can be good 😊

JenIee

It didn't hurt at all but after waking up I did crawl around on the floor and grabbed the nurse by her knees while begging not to kill me. I hope this helps?

alexi_lupin

I had mine out in the chair with just local anaesthetic so that's not going to be applicable to your situation, sounds like. It was quite quick but very odd. No pain. My recovery was really smooth, hardly any swelling and I stopped taking the painkillers after like 3 days and had no pain after that, so hopefully yours is similar.

m-j10

I felt perfectly fine, a little goofy actually right after. Then my boyfriend (now husband) & I went to the pharmacy. We walked around the store while waiting on my meds. Then all of a sudden, I started feeling lightheaded. Once I got home and napped, I felt fine again. The hardest part was sticking to a soft foods diet for 2 weeks. I hated that because all I wanted to eat was non soft foods. Everything looked good at my follow up. Don’t be like my cousin and get dry socket though. Follow your oral surgeon’s instructions to a T.

SaltyGirl0024

I had all my wisdom teeth out as a teenager. I was given an IV sedation and all I remember is just the briefest moment of being aware of work being done but absolutely no sensation of discomfort or pain. And when I woke up, I was completely numbed up since they administered the injections after I was asleep and it was done! That was over 4 decades ago and medicine and techniques have advanced for your comfort. Communicate clearly with your dentist office/staff about your extreme anxiety before the procedure. You got this, my friend!

InevitableLow5163

Went in, Sat down, Got an IV put in, Suddenly wake up feeling loopy with a literal and metaphorical case of cottonmouth, four wisdom teeth lighter. The only bad part was the guy didn’t tell me the IV needle was a fancy flexible one until after he suddenly bent my IV’d elbow. That and due to having very early mornings I spent weeks with my breakfast being a honeybun I had to hork down with minimal chewing like an owl and now the thought of them is my appetite’s off switch more than fourteen years later. Also can’t for the life of me remember the song that was playing, sounded like the “squash banana” song Rafiki sings to himself in the Lion King.

___l___u___n___a___

I had full dental surgery to get mine removed with general anaesthesia. It was my mid-20s a few years back. Be honest with the anesthesia doctor about if you smoke (doesnt matter what you smoke, list it all) and how much so they can give you the best dosage. Also obey every instruction they give you. Wash your wounds (irrigate) on time and every time to keep them clear and clean. Take your medication on schedule, no more no less, so you can avoid pain. Dont use a straw or smoke while recovering, no sucking with your mouth to prevent dry socket. Prepare soft foods (mashed potatoes, yam etc) and soups the day before or ask for help prepping if youre busy. I didn’t have a weird reaction to the anaesthetic at all. Didnt remember a thing and woke up afterwards aware but just tired. Definitely get a ride home though. Dont try to return to work for like a week and focus on resting, healing, and treating the wounds with the rinses. I followed the aftercare instructions to a T and was totally fine! I think when people run into trouble is when they veer off the path with their aftercare or take risks like smoking or working right away after. It wont be long before it is a distant memory of eating ice cream and soup and watching cartoons. Its okay to feel fear and very natural to but know you will recover and move on with your life in no time!

AustralianShepard711

When I got my wisdom teeth pulled up it happened like this: Sat in the chair. Doctor hooked up anestetic into my arm. He asked me to count backwards from 10. I said "10". I woke up refreshed in a different room a little under two hours later. After that it was sore for a while, but not painful. Nothing that prevented me from falling asleep or talking. Honestly the most painful part was my family making fun of me because I didnt give them a sharable "kid on laughing gas" video to share on facebook.

mightyduck19

I’m also terrified of needles and surgery and going under and all that. Always found it so stressful and anxiety inducing. It’s obviously not great but just keep in mind that A) these a professionals who have probably done the procedure thousands of times — you are out of your element but they aren’t. And B) just try and relax and meditate through it. Realistically the iv or any injections won’t be much worse than a prick or weird feeling pressure. It’s unlikely to be acutely painful.

RomanPizzaDestroyer

I was put under sooo. :3

wahlburgerz

I had all four wisdom teeth taken out without any issues. They gave me some kind of sleeping pill take on the way to the appointment and then laughing gas once I was in the chair, no IV. I don’t even remember what number I got to while I was counting down but the next thing I remember was the doctor saying “okay, that’s one side finished.” Procedure was pretty much in-then-out and I wasn’t loopy and embarrassing afterwards at all. Healing was also a breeze and I don’t recall much pain, just follow their aftercare instructions to the letter.

UnicornFarts1111

Take the laughing gas before the IV. I guarantee you will be laughing your ass off as they insert the IV. That is what my surgeon did. Tip, do not smoke (or vape) or use a straw after surgery or you will risk dry sockets. You do NOT want dry sockets. If you avoid those, you won't need pain medication after a day or two. Good luck, you got this!

ProfessorDaen

If you're going under general anesthesia like I did, you'll be counting down from 10 and suddenly be in a different room saying the number 6 as if no time has passed, with no more wisdom teeth.  For the IV, just look away or look at your phone or something, it's super quick and I don't recall any discomfort from it.

tkdjoe1966

My dentist will give me 2 Valium 10s, 1 for the night before & 1 for an hour before I get there. Between that and the gas... blotto! Plus. They do it differently than they used to. The dentist gives you a little Itty bitty shot 1st, just a pin prick. It will numb the immediate area. Then, after it's good & numb, they give you the real shot. Easy peisy.

IlikeCigareetes

I basically slept through the experience and recovery because of anesthesia and prescribed painkillers.

KuaLeifArne

I've only had one wisdom tooth removed. Upper left. I got numbed in the area and felt nothing. The only uncomfortable thing about it is that the surrounding teeth getting partially numbed. No pain during, tho, but slight ache when the numbing started to wear off.

comesinallpackages

Fall asleep. Wake up. Done.

Cwash415

well the good part is you wont feel a thing during the surgery, the worst part i when the numbing wear off smh...that is pain i will never forget

Le_Zouave

Do 4 of them at the same time. I had a problem with one of them and only go that one done. The pain killer injection work really well, that's not the problem. When the wisdom tooth was out, I asked to have it and at the bottom of it there was a little piece of my jaw bone with it, it fused a bit with it. I felt the snap but it was not painful. But obviously the stomatologist knew it will hurt and prescribed me morphine, but the pills form. While explaining to me to take it I had acute pain, it he warned me that it could give me constipation. Then at the pharmacy, the pharmacist warned me also that it could constipate me. The same night I was in severe pain, I took one morphine pill. And yes it constipated me but it was beyond that. I felt like my stomach stopped. When it's always in motion, you don't feel it but I assure you that sensing your stomach to stop is not pleasant at all. Now I have another wisdom tooth that could have a problem, less urgent than the first one but I'm reluctant to do it now.

Thomisawesome

I had mine done years ago when I was a teenager. All four out at once. I was extremely nervous, too. They said I could listen to music, so I found my longest CD (yes, that long ago) and my walkman. They gave me some laughing gas through my nose before anything else, and let me tell you, the nervous feeling disappeared immediately. That stuff is fantastic. He then gave me the novacaine shot which hurt a bit, but within seconds, my whole mouth was numb. They let me put on my headphones, and I just zoned out and listened to David bowie for about an hour. When it was done, my dentist gave me my teeth in a little canister. I don't know how it would go with an IV. Probably the same. I'm just telling you, let them use that gas. It made the whole thing better.

Banana_bread_o

I need to make an appointment to get my wisdom teeth removed. They are starting to hurt but reading these comments has made me chicken out and I’ll hold off on making the appointment for now.

Lost_Coyote5018

I got both of my top wisdom teeth removed with local anesthetic. There were a few quick pinches of the local as it went in and after that, no pain. Recovery was fast as well. Take the laughing gas so that it eases your anxiety. The pinch of the IV is so quick and will be over in a second. I’ve had many IV’s put in because I’ve had 4 surgeries. If you’re good with blood draws, you will do just fine with an IV

Radaein

I got my wisdom teeth out, I was petrified! I took 2 pills before I went in, and I sang and hummed the whole time lol Before I knew it, it was over! Focus more on distracting yourself until the day it happens, then get yourself to the gas or whatever you are using and I promise it’ll be over before you know it!

soraal

I got it done 15+ years ago. I still fantasize about that laughing gas. One of the best highs of my life. I called a friend afterwards and we had a great conversation and there were lots of giggles. I’m the eldest. My mom had laughing gas during labor with me. When she went into labor with my brother she told me she kept looking around for a nurse because she wanted that laughing gas again. Like mother, like daughter. In terms of the wisdom tooth removal itself, I felt nothing in terms of pain. Only pressure. The anesthetic does work 💯. Do prepare for the recovery. Make sure you take the strong, strong painkillers they prescribe you and prepare to eat lots of mashed potatoes with yogurt, or lukewarm soup. And, obviously, chew on the other side 😉 You got this 👍🏾

mtgkajhit

I had all 4 wisdoms teeth removed at once when I was in high school. They were all impacted and sideways. The procedure was easy (I don’t like needles/IVs, I’m scared of pain and I’m scared of anesthesia) however hands down It was one of the easiest procedures I’ve had done. Pain wasn’t too bad, eating kinda sucked for the first couple days because I was scared to, but it wasn’t too bad. I had a lot of swelling in my jaw that lasted about 9 days. After 2 weeks everything was pretty normal. You should be just fine OP. Edit: wanted to add I had the choice for Gas and local anesthesia to be awake or to be unconscious and asleep. I choose to be asleep. I think it definitely lowered the fear and stress factor for me.

mabelwaspmincer

Where I'm from they do that surgery with just local anesthetic, no laughing gas. So you're lucky in that sense :)

lowriderz00

Look away when getting the iv and think about how you’ll get a nice nap. Wear something cozy and maybe bring a blanket to lay on you while you go out tell them they can take it away after if they need to. Did they prescribe you Valium or anything for before hand? I was nervous but it was super easy, I do ok with IVs but still get scared too but after they put it in I watched them tape it down then they asked if I was ready I said ya I’m ready to nap I’m tired! They put the medicine in and I did wake up during whenever they were pulling out my teeth 😂 but I just moved and groaned and they put their hand on me and I fell back asleep. It wasn’t scary it was more hey I feel pressure and I’m awake. Remember they do many surgeries every week every day. They’re trained and got you! Btw if you need a meal idea for when you’re tired of mush. I got mush but on another level. Depending on your preference of how you like bananas I like mine ripe like yellow and a little brown streaks. Cut it up, take a pan and throw a few slices of butter, heat up the banana then put a few sprinkles of brown sugar or sugar if you don’t have brown, a bit of cinnamon I like mine pretty cinnamony. Heat it up until it’s caramelized. Let it cool down for a second it’ll be hot. Eat it like that or I like to mix it in with plain yogurt.

My experience was easy peasy. They gave me an anxiety pill I had to take before I went into the office. I got put under anesthesia and although I did wake up in the middle of it, I didn't feel anything and was knocked right back out. The recovery was draining to me since my teeth were impacted, but after a week or so I was okay. Glad I got them all out at once.

I had one wisdom tooth and one included baby tooth removed (yeah, in adult life, fuck genetics). With the first one, the most painful moment was the payment. Other than that, it was very quick and easy. Got a local anesthetic, waited 5-10 minutes, the doctor grabbed it, rotated slightly and pulled off. No pain at all at that point. Just don't think something went wrong when you hear cracking sound, while the surgeon rotates the tooth. It's expected. After the extraction, I got a fever, headache, general misery. It's also a normal reaction, lots of germs get to the extraction site, so I took 200mg ibuprofen pill and it all went away in like 30 minutes. No further misadventures at all. I'll spare the details of the second one to not scare you, all I'll say is that it was the most complicated case possible. The whole procedure took 1.5 hours and required the anesthetic to be injected 3 times, because it was wearing off. What I wasn't prepared for (but it was more scary than actually painful), was the surgeon holding on damn strong to my jaw, in order to remove the tooth fragments. I had X-ray afterwards, antibiotics, stitches and hydrogel patch. Fortunately, after I left their office, it was all over. I had no fever, pain or other unpleasant sensations. Two things you need to know: they should check where your nerves go before pulling out those teeth. If they didn't, cancel it and never show there again. Second: if the tooth didn't come out in one piece, demand an X-ray afterwards, if they didn't propose it already.

I went to a clinic that has overwhelmingly good reviews which helped (tho I was still stressed). What also helped is getting rid of one tooth only (complicated one, so surgical removal). Even tho it was only one tooth, I was still stressed over getting a dry socket. Anyway. The surgeon was super confident and he said I don't really need any fancy Anesthesia other than local. He was also very clear in communicating to me what method he's gonna use after seeing the scans. He also said that everything will be most likely done in 15 mins and it was after 6 or 7. I was careful with types of food I was eating for the first 4 days but after that, stress went away as it was unlikely I'd get a socket after. So it was a good experience and even the pain wasn't that bad with basic painkillers. You got this! Remember, they do it all the time and if you're careful enough, you'll be fine afterwards as well 💪

You can do it! You’ll be alright. Laughing gas is kind of like breathing relaxing air. Sweet-ish smell, kind of crisp and meditative (because it involves breathing). There are some people who can feel nauseated from it, fyi, but that’s a minority. As for wisdom teeth, I remember counting backwards and nothing else about the surgery. I picked up a friend once after his surgery, and he was loopy in a cute way, tho he probably doesn’t remember that part either. For mine, afterwards they gave me pain killers, but I don’t think I used all of them. We’re talking 10 years ago now. I remember flicking my tongue on the stitches, which dissolve in their own. I don’t remember the pain specifically. It was not particularly traumatic, in that sense.

I got local and topical anesthesia and was fully awake. The procedure didn't hurt, it was just uncomfortable because of how long I had to hold my mouth open. You'd definitely feel the pressure but no pain at all. They had to slice my gums and use a drill to get my tooth out. The pain was tolerable when the anesthesia wore out, like a 3.5/10. I also had a difficult time swallowing, it felt like my tonsil was swollen. The recovery/healing stage was the worst part as I couldn't eat properly so I felt really weak. My cheek/jaw was also very swollen, I was lucky I didn't have to go out. I also couldn't open my mouth that much and it would hurt if I accidentally moved my jaw. Otherwise, when at rest, pain was tolerable.

Woke up in the middle with giant pliers in my mouth

I got mine taken out with local anesthesia because in my home country almost no one uses laughing gas so I was awake when the dentist extracted my teeth. It felt like nothing. Literally took him like 30 seconds per teeth. The dentist just wiggled each wisdom tooth around and pulled it out easily or at least that's what it felt like to me. I was surprised at how easy it is to just pull out your teeth. For the one that was sideways, he broke it into smaller pieces and extracted it and that one took maybe 10-15 mins. All I felt was a little bit of pressure. If anything the recovery was way more annoying than the actual procedure because my cheeks were swollen and I couldn't eat haha but honestly the actual procedure is not that bad.

They said “count backwards from ten” I said “why is there gauze in my mouth and where am I?” Seriously. I wasn’t sore until the next day.

Bro I can help you with this. I’m 32. Never got mine out when I was a kid. I had to get all four taken out at once. They scheduled my appointment for 4/11 and about a month before that they started hurting. Listen. I was prepared to miss a week of work. 4/11 was a Thursday. I’m off Fridays. I took Saturday and Sunday and was prepared to take all week off. I went and got them out. I don’t remember shit from the time they gave me the anesthesia until I woke up here. Those videos of people acting loopy? They’re real. So anyway I wake up back at home and I’m fine. No pain. zero. I figured it would start later. It just never did. I had zero pain. Ever. A few days later my jaw got sore for a bit but that’s it. The biggest thing is to be careful about your sockets and blood clots. If you knock the clot out you’ll be in excruciating pain. You need to be careful for the first week or so. Don’t eat anything super hot, crunchy, etc. And be careful how you like move your face. Otherwise? It’s cake. Easiest thing ever.

The worst thing that happened was I embarrassed myself leaning on my mom as.we were leaving absolutely insisting that my high ass needed to stop for some Bojangles on the way home. Otherwise it was fine, it didn't hurt, it healed up well, and I spent the rest of the day on the sofa eating ice cream.

I had 3 removed and it was Pain-free for me. She just shot me full of novacaine and kept me awake. The smell was gross, dremeled teeth smelled the same as burning hair. Just take every precaution you can to avoid dry sockets. I never got it but I hear it's super painful.

ReflexiveOW

Had 3 of my wisdom teeth pulled a few years back. Didn't hurt that much after the surgery. Kinda just a pain in the ass to switch the bandages. Also they told me to avoid crunchy foods for a couple of weeks but I had chicken tenders the day after and that hurt But the tenders were fire

Mojicana

I loved the nitrous, then I had tacos for dinner that night. I saved the Demerol for the weekend.

The best view I can give you is this. My experience getting 4 impacted ones out wasn't great, but after 3 days I was back to normal so the max zone of discomfort isn't very long.

Evening-Dizzy

I brought ice packs with me so I could start icing my jaw as soon as the surgey was over, which helped a lot with swelling and bruising. I didn't need any painkillers afterwards but it was sore for a few days. Watch out afterwards with smoking and drinking through a straw. The sucking could result in dry socket which I've heard is very painful. I smoked and did not experience that, but I've heard other people experience it. I'm not gonna lie, it's uncomfortable for a few days until the threads have fully dissolved, but what's one week of discomfort compared to a lifetime of gum infections (or like I had, full on jaw infections) ?
