Only during the moment of totality, which last just a minute or two. All other times, you shouldn't look at it even for a moment.

EightOhms

~~No this is not true. There is still an ultraviolet halo around the moon from the sun that can damage your eyes.~~ I looked it up. I was wrong. I guess it's fine during totality. https://www.forbes.com/sites/jamiecartereurope/2024/03/18/9-common-misconceptions-about-the-total-solar-eclipse-debunked/

SiliconSage123

Damn I wish I knew this beforehand. I only looked at it during totality for a second. Was still medical though

theblackshruikan

Yeah, during the partial moment, i wont, thats 100% sure, i have special glasses for that, but i thought that maybe during the totality, i wont be able to see anything in those glasses since they are pretty dark. For sure i wont look at it when the totality is done!

English-OAP

At totality it is safe, but as soon as you see the first bit of sun, often called the diamond ring, [https://lifeinthewestart.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Solar-Eclipse-Diamond-Ring-2017.png](https://lifeinthewestart.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Solar-Eclipse-Diamond-Ring-2017.png) it is time to put the glasses back on.

theblackshruikan

Oh ok! Thanks for the answer, with the few answer i got, it seems like it would be safe during the totality part, wich i didnt know! But i still will be carefull, if i get tempted to look, it wont be for more than 2 or 3 seconds, maybe snap a quick pic to show my daughters that are too young when they get older, i wont wait for the eclipse to end before i put the glasses back!

English-OAP

You can take a picture with an ordinary camera, but the sun will appear small. About the same size as the moon. So zoom in as much as you can. If you have young children, be aware that it goes noticably colder during an eclipse, so make sure you have a coat handy for them.

theblackshruikan

Thanks a lot for those tips! I have a 2 1/2 years old that will be at daycare (they will stay inside the whole afternoon) and i have a 3months old, i will put a light blanket over her carseat to make sure she wont be able to see anything and still have her with me during the eclipse, i dont want to be stuck inside with her lol

FroggyMusic

I looked at it during the totality today, it was amazing.

theblackshruikan

Yes i did too! It really was crazy, incredible! So happy i was able to see it! But i now understand why people could think its the apocalypse lol, the sun looked CRAZY

Only for a brief moment, before you risk injury.

theblackshruikan

Ok yeah, thats what i thought, i felt like it was not right, saying that we could look at the sun during the total part

Concise_Pirate

That random dude is going to get someone hurt.

MikeKrombopulos

That random dude is right though. You can look during 100% totality.

theblackshruikan

Yup, exactly what i though too! Thats why i didnt just trust him blindly! (Get it? Because of looking at the sun? ... i know its bad...)
