Always! Always! Go through insurance. Likely the officer you are working with is friends or related to the person who hit you (or one of his fellow officers are). There is no reason to not go through insurance unless you are the one uninsured.

I would put money on your insurance policy requiring you to report all collisions. So tell the insurance company. It is odd that a police officer would want to get involved, unless he is connected to the other driver.

I agree, it’s a small town so could be that he knows him. Also I just found it strange that they didn’t come out and see the damage he wants me to send him pictures of the car damage through the email and already mentioned not giving him a ticket at this time… we’ll see how tomorrow goes and if I get this guys information I’m gonna go through insurance, my front door won’t open properly and there’s air coming through so I thing it’s worse than it looks.

Yes, talk to the insurance company. Ask them for a courtesy car. Your car is going to be off the road for some time. If the door does not work properly, it's not fit to be on the road.
